LOIS H. RAMSDELL

RICHFORD / ENOSBURG -- Lois H. Ramsdell, age 98, passed away Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at her daughter's home, with her loving family at her side.

She was born Nov. 19, 1904, in East Charleston, Vt., the daughter of the late Wilson and Adeline (Hudson) Hinton.

She made her home with her daughter for the past 12 years. Prior to living in Richford she was a resident of West Enosburg and East Charleston. She was a member of the West Enosburg Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star in Island Pond, Tyler Branch Grange in West Enosburg and the Vermont Retired Teachers Association. She was employed as a school teacher in the towns of Charleston, Norton, Bakersfield and Enosburg for 42 years, retiring in 1971.

She is survived by her daughter, Adeline Couture and her husband Francis of Richford; her son, David Ramsdell of Kingston, N.Y.; her sister, Marjorie Davis of Derby; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Ramsdell; and her son, Wilson Ramsdell.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 10 at the West Enosburg Methodist Church with Pastor Cheryl Heater officiating. Graveside services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 in the East Charleston Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be held Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.

MARY T. HUGHES

ST. ALBANS -- Mrs. Mary T. Hughes, age 75, died unexpectedly on arrival at Northwestern Medical Center, Friday evening, Oct. 10, 2003.

She was born Sept. 9, 1928, in Grand Isle, Vt., daughter of the late Frank and Fern Sophronia (Desautel) Terry. She married Reginald W. Hughes I on Oct. 4, 1947. Mary spent most of her life as a home maker and caring for her family. She was a member of the Abenaki Indian Tribe.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Reginald W. Hughes, I; her eight children, Wayne Hughes of Winooski, Danny Hughes and his wife, Marie, of Swanton, Linda Hallock and her husband, Donald, of Leesburg, Fla., Christina Hughes of Bennington, Mary Theresa Hughes of Rutland, Michael Hughes of Chittenden, Reginald Hughes, II of St. Albans, and Wuanita Clogston and her husband, Jacob, of Swanton; 21 grandchildren; her brother, Frank Terry and his wife, Pauline, of Fall River, Mass.; her half-sisters, Derina Meunier and her husband, Jerry, of Schenectady, N.Y., and Edith Boyce and her husband, Edward, of Rockland, Conn.; several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her son, Reginald Lee Hughes; and her brother, Rudy Terry.

A graveside service will be held at a later date in the Hughes family lot in the Egypt Cemetery. At her request, there will be no public calling hours.

Memorials may be made to the family in care of the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main Street, St. Albans, Vt. 05478. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

EDITH RACINE

ST. ALBANS -- Edith Racine, 90, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at Haven Health Care in St. Albans following a long illness. Edith was born in Newport, N.H. on Feb. 4, 1913, the daughter of Albert and Edith (Knapp) Martin.

She had worked at Woolworth's in the 1950s and was the proprietor of the Winooski News Stand in the '60s.

Mrs. Racine is survived by her children and spouses Albert and Evette Buinicky of Zephyrhills, Fla., Conrad and Arlitha Racine of Westford, and Alice Buinicky of Milton; by her grandchildren, Melodie Pierce of Grand Isle, Shawn Buinicky of California, Velvet Bechard of Tennessee; her great-grandchildren, Kristopher Pierce and Jami Parrow; by her great-great-grandchildren Kaleb and Shanasy Pierce, Collin and Carter Parrow; by a brother Edward Martin; and by several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Dennis Racine; and his daughter Denise; and a sister Mildred Fowler.

Edith's family would like to thank the exceptional staff at Haven Health Center for the excellent care they gave Edith during her three plus years there.

Contributions in Edith's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Vermont, P.O. Box 1139, Montpelier, Vt. 05601, or to the Haven Health Center of St. Albans, East Wing Activities, 596 Sheldon Rd., St. Albans, Vt. 05478.

Visiting hours will be held Friday, Oct. 17, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton, with a Memorial Service held at 8:30 p.m. in the Funeral Home. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

THELMA RUTH DEROUCHIE

MILTON -- Thelma Ruth Derouchie, 73, died unexpectedly at her home on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003. Thelma was born on Aug. 9, 1930, in Georgia, the daughter of James and Dorothy (Wood) Hayes.

She had worked as a mail clerk for the State of Vermont Dept. of Health, retiring in 1998, following 28 years of service.

Mrs. Derouchie is survived by her children, Sandy Smith and her husband Joseph of Newbern, N.C., Michael Derouchie and his wife, Anita, of Milton, Sharon Derouchie and her fiance, Jeff Taylor, of St. Albans, Stephen Derouchie of Bradford, Pa., Ralph Derouchie of Essex Center, Randy Derouchie of Milton, Karen Derouchie and her husband, William Gaudette, of Milton, and Dean Derouchie and his wife, Ellen, of Newport; by her grandchildren, Troy, Cristy, Sean, Ticey, Joseph, Candida, Michael, Ralph, Jenny, Joshua, Melissa, Jamie, Carrie, Stephen, and Christopher; by 15 great-grandchildren; by her brothers, Royal and Edward Hayes; her stepbrother, Wayne Rockwell; and her stepsister, Mary Prim. She is also survived by her children's father, Ralph Derouchie; and several nieces and nephews. Thelma found great joy in her special companions, Bandit, Moose and Pebbles.

She was predeceased by her husband, Michael Spicer; and her sister, Doris Harrington.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, at 11 a.m. in St. Ann's Cemetery located on the corner of Railroad St. and Middle Rd. in Milton. There will be no visiting hours. Contributions in Thelma's memory may be made to the Humane Society of Chittenden County, 142 Kindness Court, South Burlington, Vt. 05403.

Arrangements are by the Minor Funeral Home in Milton.

FRANCIS ALLEN RIOPEL

ST. ALBANS BAY -- Mr. Francis Allen "Slugger" Riopel, age 49, of St. Albans Bay, died unexpectedly at his home on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003. He was born on Feb. 27, 1954, in Holyoke Mass., the eldest son of the late Rheal and Jeanne (Goddu) Riopel.

He graduated from Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans in 1973. After graduating he served in the United States Army and had been stationed in Guam. He was an active member of the Vermont National Guard for 28 years. He worked as a correctional officer at the Northwest State Correctional Facility in St. Albans for 19 years retiring in 2001.

Frank loved to live life to the fullest, never slowing down even after losing a leg to diabetes. His love for life will be missed by all who loved him. A man of many talents, he loved working on his 1968 Chevelle, his home and woodworking. He collected Coca Cola and Betty Boop memorabilia.

Frank is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Sally (Duprey); his pride and joy daughters, Michelle and Heather, all of St. Albans Bay; his brothers Gary and his wife, Angie, of Brooksville, Fla., Ronald and his companion, Helen, George and his companion, Cindy, all of Springfield, Mass., James and his wife, Debra, of Highgate; his sisters Susan Riopel of Highgate Springs and Patricia Riopel of West Warren, Mass. He is also survived by his mother and father-in-law Myrtle Duprey and Norman Ploof both of St. Albans; sisters-in-law and their spouses Diane and Ted Lafar, Deb and Ken Bohannon all of Highgate, Sandra and Fred Snide, Bonnie and Richard Garrett all of St. Albans, Penny and Richard Poupart of Waterbury Center, Lisa and Mike McLaughlin of Georgia, and Robin and Kevin Gover of Swanton; two brothers-in-law, Francis Duprey and his wife Susan of Swanton, and Norman Duprey of his companion Amy of St. Albans; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Frank also leaves his very special friends, Robert "Tiny" and Anne Williams, Michael and Gail Perras of St. Albans, Rodney Cameron of Georgia, and Porter and Donna Hodgdon of Swanton.

In honoring Frank's wishes, there will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held on Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Riopel family lot in the St. Albans Bay Cemetery.

Memorials may be made the American Diabetes Association, 77 Hegeman Ave., Colchester, Vt. 05446.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

RUTH ANN SMITH

MILTON -- Ruth Ann Smith, 56, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. Ruth was born in Colchester on Nov. 21, 1946, the daughter of Maurice and Evelyn (Cross) LaBell.

On April 24, 1965 she married Norman Smith at St. Ann's in Milton. Together they settled in Essex and then moved to Milton to raise their family.

In addition to her husband, Norm, Ruth is survived by her children Denise Francis and her husband, Mark, Darceline Smith, her grandchildren Jessica and Andrew Francis, and Ashley Smith all of Milton; by her mother Evelyn LaBell of Milton; her brothers and sisters William LaBelle and his wife, Elsie, of Alburg, Robert LaBelle of Georgia, Elaine Cota and her husband, Joseph, of Milton, Jane Germaine and her husband, Ronald, of Milton; her brother and sister-in-laws Roland and Katrina Smith of Essex Junction, Harlan Smith of Essex Center, Reginald and Terry Smith of Milton, Linda and Brian Lander of Milton, Donna and Larry Holmes of Essex Center, and Diane and Robert Brady of Burlington; and by many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Ruth loved camping with all her friends at the Cherokee Campers Club. She enjoyed bird watching and cooking. She will be dearly missed by all.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at 11 a.m. in St. Ann's Catholic Church in Milton. Burial will follow in St. Ann's Cemetery.

Contributions in Ruth's memory may be made to the Milton Rescue, P.O. Box 15, Milton, Vt. 05468, or to the VNA, 1110 Prim Rd., Colchester, Vt. 05446.

Visiting hours will be held on today, Oct. 9, 2003, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton.

ELEANOR MARY LARROW

VERGENNES/CHARLOTTE -- A Memorial Mass will be held for Eleanor Mary Larrow, daughter of Edward and Eva (Messier) Jordan, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Vergennes on Oct. 11, 2003, at 1 p.m.

Immediately following the Mass, there will be a reception in the St. Peter's Parish Hall.

Committal services will be held at the Congregational Church, Grand View Cemetery in Charlotte, Vt. The service will be around 4 p.m., following the reception.

Eleanor died on Aug. 24, 2003, in Zephyrhills, Fla.

Donations may be made in Eleanor's memory to Hernando-Pasco Hospice Inc., 12107 Majestic Blvd., Hudson, Fla. 34667.

ARLENE L. STAFFORD

GEORGIA -- Arlene (Lewis) Stafford of Georgia, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Monday evening, Oct. 6, 2003, at Fletcher Allen Health Care following a brief illness.

Born in Duxbury, Vt., Dec. 12, 1928, the daughter of Ila(Russell) and Harold Lewis, Arlene was married to the love of her life and best friend, Keith W. Stafford, on Feb. 1, 1948, in Waterbury, Vermont. For over 50 years, they worked and traveled the roads of life together. Arlene was the consummate mother and grandmother, and her life revolved around her family. Her delicious baked goods provided comfort to all who knew her, and her skills with the needle and thread will continue to warm her family and friends for years to come. The sight of her in her bee hat and boots, working in her beautiful and bountiful garden, will long be remembered. Her humor and candor were ever-present and delighted her family.

Arlene now joins her beloved husband, Keith, who passed away on Dec. 14, 1999. She is survived by her children, daughter Joan Nye and husband Ric of Georgia, son Scott Stafford and wife Karin of South Burlington, and daughter Karla Kane of Georgia; her grandchildren, Erin Gilmore and husband John of Rutland and their child expected in March, and Meghan Nye and companion Sean Sweeney of Johnson. She is also survived by several brothers and sisters and their spouses, children, and grandchildren. She will be loved and remembered forever.

Arlene's family will receive friends on Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans. Funeral services will private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Georgia Fire and Rescue Association c/o Stephen Bechard, 3082 Georgia Shore Road, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.

MARJORIE RITA HARVEY

ST. ALBANS -- Marjorie Rita Harvey, 86, a lifelong resident of this area, passed away Monday afternoon, Oct. 6, 2003, at Holiday House Nursing Facility. She was born in St. Albans, Jan. 5, 1917, the daughter of the late Silas and Mabel (Willet) Pelkey. She was the widow of Kenneth A. Harvey who died May 20, 1986.

Marge worked with her husband, Ken, at the Owl Club from 1946 to 1963 serving many meals to faithful members. She was also one of the well known clerks at Ben Franklin in Swanton for many years. Though never belonging to any organization, Marge performed volunteer services for many of her elderly friends and neighbors.

Survivors include her son Jeffrey Harvey and his wife, Janet, of Vienna, Va.; her daughter, Jinene Harvey of Clearwater, Fla.; four grandchildren and their spouses, Heather and Mike Lee of St. Johnsbury, Vt., Gretchen and Doug Hillman of Whitefield, N.H., Rachel and Chuck Lamb of Palmer, Alaska, and Nathan and Shannon Harvey of Annapolis, Md. She also leaves five great-grandchildren, Ian and Zeb Galipean of Lancaster, N.H., Ayla Knapton of Whitefield, N.H., and Sarah and Natalie Harvey of Annapolis, Md.; and two nieces, Judy Rafferty of St. Albans and Patricia Rainville of Alburg. She will be missed by her loyal and loving cat and companion, "Hey You."

In addition to her husband, Ken, she was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers, Phyllis Paquette, Carmelita Kendall, Kenneth and Silas Pelkey.

A graveside funeral service will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. at the family lot in Holy Cross Cemetery on Fairfax Street in St. Albans. Visitation will be on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel with prayers and remarks at 7:45 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Franklin County Humane Society, 30 Sunset Meadows, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.
Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans.
