RALPH E. SHAW

EAST ALBURG - Mr. Ralph E. Shaw, 86, of the East Alburg Road passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, after a long illness.

Ralph was born on Nov. 17, 1917, in Monson, Mass. and spent his early years in Connecticut. He married Madeline Hilliker Thomas in 1965.

Ralph worked for the University of Connecticut for many years before retiring in East Alburg in 1974.

Ralph is survived by his stepson, Bob Thomas of Naples. Fla. His grandchildren, Allison and Eric Thomas of Naples, Fla. His dear friends and neighbors, Bob and Charlene Williams of East Alburg and several nieces, nephews and many friends.

He was predeceased by his wife, Madeline. He will be missed by all.

A Memorial Service for Ralph will be held Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at 2 p.m. from the West Swanton United Methodist Church, Church Road, West Swanton. Interment will be private in Riverside Cemetery.

Arrangements have been under the direction of the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton.

ALAN L. PETRIE

GEORGIA -- Mr. Alan L. Petrie, age 60, died unexpectedly while watching his New England Patriots, Sunday, Nov. 17, 2003. He was born the son of the late Clyde S. and Gladys (Jaquet) Petrie April 9, 1943, in Salem, N.J.

He owned and operated the Great Northern Digital Satellite Company of which he was proud. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the beginning of the Vietnam Conflict. He married Danielle Costick Dec. 23, 1967. Alan was a member of the Boy Scouts of America and the Eagle Scouts of America. He received his God and Country and Order of the Arrow honors. He enjoyed boxing, and the New England Patriots football, but he had a special passion for cooking. He will be remembered for his strong love of his family, and especially his granddaughters.

Alan is survived by his wife Danielle of Georgia, Vt.; his sons Christian Petrie and his wife Chico of Okanawa, Japan, and Matthew Petrie and his wife Jennifer of Georgia, Vt.; his special granddaughters Meghan Petrie, Kristiana Petrie and Olivia Petrie; his brother David Petrie of Honeoye Falls, N.Y., and his nephew Dylan N. Petrie. He is also survived by his canine companion, Sylvie.

The family will receive friends at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., St. Albans, from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 77 Hegeman Ave, Colchester, Vt. 05446. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

MELANIE SUE "JO" L'ESPERANCE

ST. ALBANS -- Melanie Sue "Jo" L'Esperance, 58, a lifelong resident of this area, passed away Friday morning, Nov. 21, 2003, at Fletcher Allen Health Care. She was born in St. Albans Sept. 8, 1945, the daughter of Harriet (Soule) Armstrong and the late Emmett L. Armstrong. On Dec. 1, 1962, she married Raymond A. L'Esperance in St. Albans.

Jo graduated from Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans in 1963. She was a member of Green Mountain Post 1 American Legion Auxiliary. She was an avid card player and enjoyed reading and traveling to visit her children. Her greatest joy, however, was her grandchildren.

Survivors include Melanie's husband of over 40 years, Raymond; her mother, Harriet "Susie" Armstrong of St. Albans; a son, Carl, his wife, Heidi and their children, Brandon, Andrew and Hayli, all of Denver Colo.; two daughters and their families, Kim Gray, her husband, Brian and their son, Riley of Sanford, N.C. and Kathy Sparrow, her husband, Michael and their daughters, Sydney and Danielle of Naples, Fla. She also leaves two sisters, Patricia Gray and her husband, Quentin of St. Albans, and Pamela Posada and her special friend, Jerry Miles of Selah, Wash.; as well as numerous friends, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her father in 1997.

A funeral service will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Luke's Episcopal Church with the Reverend Dennis Hayward officiating. Interment will be in the new family lot in St. Albans Bay Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Scleroderma Foundation, New England Chapter, 462 Boston St., Suite 1-1, Topsfield, Mass. 01983.

Visitation will be on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans.

INA MAY ROOT

MILTON -- Ina May Root, 83, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, at the Star Farm Nursing Center in Burlington following a long illness.
Ina was born in Jericho on Feb. 19, 1920, the daughter of William and Lena (Pecor) Russin.

Through the years, Ina has held several jobs, including being employed at a sewing factory, working for General Electric, for Vermont Furniture, and in her own home cleaning business.

Ina is survived by her children, Robert Root of Melbourne, Fla., Frank Root of Milton, Dorothy Elliott and her husband Paul of North Troy, Sandra MacArthur and her husband Thomas of Essex Center, Paul Root of St. Albans, and William Root of South Burlington; by her grandchildren, Tammy, Brian, Lana and Bobby; by her great-grandchildren David, Elizabeth, Nicole, Cassie and Robbie, and her great-granddaughter Shelby, her best friend, and her inspiration that kept her going. Ina is also survived by her brother, Lyman Russin and his wife Thelma of St. Albans Bay; her sisters Gladys Legrande of Underhill Center and Mary Lowell of Williston; and by many nieces and nephews; and her adopted black lab Max.

She was predeceased by her former husband Earl Root in 1988; her sisters Leora Russin and Sadie Kook; and her brothers Donald, Ralph and Richard Russin; and by a brother-in-law Les Lowell.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, Nov. 24, 2003, at 10 a.m. in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton. Burial will follow in the Underhill Flats Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, Ohio 44720.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton.

LESLIE G. PALMER

FAIRFAX -- Leslie G. Palmer, 82, died early Thursday morning, Nov. 20, 2003, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington surrounded by his loving family. Leslie was born on Oct. 16, 1921, in Fairfax, the son of Elijah and Ada (Cross) Palmer.

He was married to Wanda Chappel on Nov. 8, 1946, in St. Ann's Catholic Church in Milton. Leslie had a great love for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He took great pride in his farm on Cherrierville Road, and in the fact that he and his sons were running it. He also loved to hunt and fish.

In addition to his loving wife Wanda, of over 57 years, Leslie is survived by his children and grandchildren, Sandra Lucia and Dwight Dimond of Bristol and her children Skip and Wendy Lucia; Mike Palmer and his wife Kathy of Georgia, and their children Derek and Stacey Palmer; Nancy Coon and her husband Gary Sr. of Williston and their children Heather Dunsmore, Gary Coon Jr., and Brandi Cota; daughter-in-law Denise Palmer of Fairfax, and children Dylan and Ben Palmer and Crystal Rozwood; Elijah Palmer of Fairfax; Mary Meigs and her husband Bill of St. Albans, and their children Justin and Jody Meigs; and by 14 great-grandchildren; his sisters Shirley Shores and her husband Richard of Fairfax, and Barbara Bordeau of Conn.; and by several nieces and nephews.

Leslie will now be together with his beloved son Dennis, who died on May 4th of this year, whom he and Elijah worked with for many years running the family farm, and by his loyal companion Rocky. He was also predeceased by his brother Glendon; his sisters and spouses Marion and Robert Newton, and Harriet and Paul Dussualt; and a brother-in-law Lucien Bordeau.

Following Leslie's request, visiting hours and funeral services will be private. Burial will be in St. Luke's Cemetery in Fairfax. Memorials in Leslie's name may be made to the Fairfax Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 428, Fairfax, Vt. 05454, or to the American Cancer Society, 150 Kennedy Drive, Suite 4, So. Burlington, Vt. 05403-6745. Arrangements are by the Minor Funeral Home in Milton.

MARGUERITE L. KIESELMANN

GEORGIA -- Marguerite L. Kieselmann, 93, a longtime Georgia resident, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care. She was born on July 31, 1910, in Massena, N.Y., the daughter of the late Clarence H. and Camilla (McCormick) Locke.

On Aug. 18, 1934, in Dunkirk, N.Y., she married John N. Kieselmann, Jr. who predeceased her on Oct. 8, 1988.

Marguerite graduated from the Fradonia Normal College in 1931 with a Degree in Education. She then taught school in Long Island from 1931 to 1947. Marguerite and John moved to Georgia in 1947 and together they operated Kieselmann's Store on Route 7 until 1969. From 1958 until her retirement in 1973, she was also employed by the State of Vermont with the Department of Social Services during which time she helped establish the first school for mentally challenged children. She was a member of the Georgia United Methodist Church, Georgia United Methodist Women and was Superintendent of Sunday School, The Georgia Fire Department Women's Auxiliary, the Altrusa International Club, Vermont State Employees Association, Vermont Alzheimer's Association, and was instrumental in establishing Club Respite in St. Albans.

Survivors include her daughter, Linda K. Montgomery and her husband, Bruce of Georgia; two grandchildren, John Stuart Montgomery of St. Albans and Christine Ann Couture and her husband, Bruce of San Jose, Calif.; three great-grandchildren, Kyle W. Couture, Danielle Marie Couture and her twin sister, Megan Nicole Couture; a brother, William G. Locke and his wife, Helen of Wittier, Calif.; several nieces and nephews; and her care givers, Susan Howrigan and Mindy Fuller and the Franklin County Home Health Nurses and Staff. In addition to her parents and husband, John, she was predeceased by a sister, Catherine Locke; and a brother, Robert Locke.

Funeral services will be held on Friday at 1:00 p.m. in the Georgia United Methodist Church with Pastor Sam Newton officiating. Marguerite's family will receive friends on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St. Albans. Interment will be in the family lot in Georgia Plain Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin County Home Health Agency, Hospice Program, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans Vt. 05478, or the Alzheimer's Association, Vermont and New Hampshire Chapter, 10 Ferry Street, Suite 427 B, Concord, N.H. 03301-5004.

RONALD A. LAWRENCE

MILTON -- Ronald A. Lawrence, 68, of Arrowhead Avenue died Tuesday morning, Nov. 18, 2003, at Fletcher Allen Health Care following a long illness. Ron was born March 12, 1935 in Vergennes, the son of the late Arthur and Gladys Angier Lawrence.

He attended school in Vergennes and graduated from Vergennes High School in 1954. He graduated from Albany Business College and found employment at Kerbs Memorial Hospital which later became the Northwest Medical Center in St. Albans. This was where he met his wife, the former Mary Bushey of St. Albans, to whom he was married on Feb. 16, 1974, at Holy Angels Church in St. Albans. They will spiritually celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary on Feb. 16th of next year.

Ron worked also for Dairyman's League and Jackman Fuel in Vergennes. He most recently was employed by Burgess Electric of Burlington.

Ron played side-kick and loved to tease his mother-in-law, Tessie Bushey of St. Albans.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mary of Milton, and their daughter, Amy Lawrence Conant and her husband Chad of Vergennes; his mother in law, Tessie Bushey of St. Albans; his brother-in-law, Michael Bushey of St. Albans; his sister-in-law, Susan Jordan of Swanton; and his aunt, of whom he thought fondly, Dorothy Angier Fisher of New Haven; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his mother and father, Arthur and Gladys Lawrence; his father-in-law, Omry (Bubby) Bushey; and his aunts, Irene Angier King, Bernice Angier Daignault, and Joy Angier Sullivan.

A special thanks goes to Fletcher Allen Health Care and its staff, including Doctors and Nurses, and in particular his dear friend of many years, Doctor Allan Ramsey for being there for him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, at 11 a.m. in St. Ann Catholic Church in Milton with burial to follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery in St. Albans.

Donations in Ron's memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association for Research, New England Region, 77 Hegeman Drive, Colchester, Vt. 05446, or to United Cerebral Palsy, attn: Development Department, 1660 L Street NW, Suite 700, Washington, DC 20036.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday morning from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in the Minor Funeral Home, Rt. 7 in Milton.

FLORENCE A. MEARS

ST. ALBANS -- Mrs. Florence A. Mears, age 96, died Sunday evening, Nov. 16, 2003, at Redstone Villa. She was born in Enosburgh July 5, 1907, daughter of the late Carm and Bessie Armstrong, who later became known as Dr. Bessie Sherman, D.C.

Florence was the window of Dr. Donald B. Mears, D.C., who died in 1984. She was an accomplished amateur artist, having received many awards and recognition for her art works.

Her survivors include her daughter-in-law, Marguerite W. Mears of Enfield, Conn.; three grandsons and their wives, Carm and Patricia Mears of Manchester, Conn., Mark and Pam Mears of East Granby, Conn. and Dean and Wendy Mears of Somers, Conn.; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, Dr. Donald B. Mears Sr., she was predeceased by her son, Dr. Donald B. Mears Jr. D.C., in 2001; and her only brother, Robert Armstrong.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, at 7 p.m. in the Brady & Levesque Funeral Chapel, 86 South Main St., St. Albans, with visitation hours following until 9 p.m. Interment will follow in the Mears family lot in the St. Albans Bay Cemetery on Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, at 10 a.m.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.
