FRANCES LUCILLE HARVEY REYNOLDS

ALBURG, Vt. / RIDGELAND, S.C. -- Frances Harvey Reynolds, 71, a longtime resident of the Alburg community, passed away early Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, at the House Holiday Nursing & Rehab. Center in St. Albans, (Town) Vt.

Frances was born Dec. 1, 1931, in Ridgeland, S.C. She was the daughter of the James Leslie Harvey, Sr. and Verna Wall Harvey Adams of Ridgeland, S.C. Frances traveled around the world with her husband Earl and their two children, during Earl's military career, which spanned 36 years. The two of them came to Alburg to live after Earl's retirement in 1982.

Frances was a dedicated committed member, pianist, soloist, a trustee of 15 years and Honorary Life Trustee of the Union Bible Church in Alburg. She was saved at age 12 at the little Baptist Church in Coosawhatchie, S.C. and was baptized by immersion. Since the age of 12, she loved and enjoyed voluntarily playing piano for church and singing for the glory of the Lord. She did that, until her death. Her voice and musical abilities touched many lives for many years.

Frances was a member of the Alburg, Vt. Town Library and past president (two terms) of the Library Association. She was instrumental in the reopening of the Town Library in 1987. She wrote feature articles for The Islander from 1985 until her death and was Alburg News Columnist from 1985 to 1995. She was a published author of national magazine articles. Frances and Earl owned E & F Auto Service (Mobil Station), Main St. in Alburg from 1982 to 1989. After selling the Mobil Station in 1989, they operated a small engine repair shop on the West Shore, until Earl's death.

While Earl was in the Air Force, Frances was employed at several large newspapers as they moved around the country to other Air Force bases. Frances, Earl and their children moved 23 times in 36 years. She was Advertising Supervisor for the Savannah Newspapers, Savannah, Ga. While they were stationed at Westover AFB in Massachusetts, she was employed at Springfield (Mass.) Newspapers. The Mayor of Chicopee, Mass. honored Frances with a badge and lifetime appointment as a Conversation Officer, for her work on behalf of clean water and other issues. She was secretary of the Chicopee Conversation Association and also secretary of the Civic Association and wrote and published their newsletter. She was an active Red Cross volunteer for 18 years in military hospitals around the country.

She leaves a daughter, Linda Reynolds Sawicki and her special friend Howard Hutton of Germantown, Md.; two special grandchildren, Jessica Sawicki of Maryland and Sgt Christopher Sawicki, US Army, Ft. Bragg, N.C., along with a wonderful addition to the family, Grace Sawicki, Michael and Damien; a son, David Earl Reynolds, and dear friend Cynthia Clauson of Pa.; her mother, Verna Harvey Adams; a brother and sister-in-law, James L. (Jim) Harvey, Jr. and Charlotte Harvey of Columbia, S.C.; a niece, Ann Margaret Harvey McGraw and her husband Charles of Columbia, S.C.; a nephew James L. (Jay) Harvey III and his wife Melody, their daughter Tabitha and son Jacob of Princeton, N.J.; first cousins, Joyce King and Susan Campbell of South Carolina; and Sally Floyd of Virginia; several second cousins, nieces and nephews and her church family in Alburg. She was predeceased by her husband Earl P. Reynolds, who died January 2000; her father, James L. Harvey, Sr. who died in 1970; and a son-in-law, Stephen Sawicki who died in 1998.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Nov. 17, 2003, at 11 a.m. from the Union Bible Church, Main St., Alburg. Dr. John J. Kehoe, pastor of the Union Bible Church will officiate. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003, at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Ridgeland, S.C.

"Nana Mama" Fran cherished and loved her family, strived to be a good Mama and Grandma and loved and appreciated her church family and friends. She enjoyed animals and her pets gave her pleasure. She has now crossed the river to be with the Lord Jesus Christ, her Savior.

BETTY JEAN POULIN

STAFFORD, Va./SWANTON, Vt. -- Betty Jean Poulin, 42, of Stafford, Va., passed away on Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003, at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, Va. after a brief illness with cancer.

She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Menard; her grandparents, Edith and Arthur Menard and Evelyn Lampman, also Theresa Menard's companion Roger Unwin; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

She is survived by three daughters, Kristen, Katelynn and Allison Poulin all of Stafford, Va., and their father, Allan Poulin; her mother and step-father, Pauline and Harold Porter, Sr. of Swanton; two brothers, Harold Porter and his companion Brenda Nolan of Swanton, Vt., and Jimmy Porter and his wife, Gisele of Sheldon, Vt.; two sisters, Bonnie Freeman and her husband Jack of St. Albans, Vt., and Theresa Menard of Swanton; nieces and nephews Jack Freeman, Jr. and companion Jennifer Campbell, Jason Freeman and his companion Kristy Duhamel, Nicole, Harry and Zachary Porter, and Matthew and Amanda Porter, Duncan Harvey, Carrie McAdoo, Jon and Justin Stimets, Matthew and Michael Laroche, Nicolette and Bethany Poulin; father and mother-in-law, Jean and Madeline Poulin; sisters-in-law, Suzanne Safford and husband Steve, Claire Stimets and husband Warren; Louise Laroche and husband Guy; brothers-in-law, Robert Poulin and companion Don Raum, John Poulin and companion Tammy Brown; two great-nieces, Alanna and Hailey Freeman; three godchildren, Alanna Freeman, Jason Freeman and Brady Dulude; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; and a special friend, Alan Chiet.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003, at 2 p.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue Swanton. Father Maurice U. Boucher, SSE, director of St. Anne's Shrine in Isle La Motte will officiate. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 12 noon until the hour of the service.

BERNADINE ELIZABETH RICE

POMFRET, Vt. -- Bernadine Rice died early Tuesday morning, Nov. 12, 2003, at DMHC after living with ovarian cancer for five years.

She was employed for 45 years as a registered nurse graduating from nursing school in 1944. She earned a Bachelors degree in nursing in 1974. Her nursing career was spent between obstetrics, emergency rooms and the operating room. After retiring from nursing she volunteered for the Pomfret Fast Squad, and more recently was a volunteer at the Pomfret School.

Bernadine married Rafael Monroy in 1949 in San Francisco, Calif. and had three children, Debra, Gregory and Bruce. After their divorce in 1970, Bernadine opened her home to several single parents and their children. In 1982, Bernadine moved to Vermont to be closer to her grandchildren and daughter, Debra. In 1983, she met and married Walter Rice of South Pomfret. After 20 years of sharing their lives together and caring for each other during their illnesses, he predeceased her on Aug. 21, 2003.

Bernadine is survived by her children, Karen and Fred Harvey of Austin, Texas, Debra and Duncan Hastings of Fairfield, Greg Monroy of Kent, Wash., Bruce Monroy of Vallejo, Calif., Kevin Rice of South Pomfret, and Gordon and Beth Rice of Hartland. She leaves her brother, Bill Rogers of Kona, HI; and her loving grandchildren, Leslie, Jay, Kipling, Maria, Holden, Chelsea, Dylan and Lyndsie; and three great-grandchildren, Katie, Patrick and Josephine; as well as several wonderful nieces and nephews.

Many, many thanks to the attentive and caring friends and neighbors of South Pomfret and heart felt gratitude goes to the nursing and medical staff at DMHC with special thanks to Dr. Leslie Demars.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, Nov. 14, at 1 p.m. in the North Pomfret Congregational Church. Reverend Sami McRae, pastor of the church, will officiate. There will be no calling hours.

Friends wishing may make memorial donations to the Pomfret School Trust, P.O. Box 130, South Pomfret, Vt. 05067.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock, Vt.

PAULINE SURPRISE TUBBS

RIPON, Wis. / ALBURG, Vt. -- Pauline Surprise Tubbs, age 94, of Hall Street in Ripon, Wis., passed away Friday, Nov. 7, 2003, at her home.

Pauline was born July 13, 1909, in New York, a daughter of Joseph M. and Mary Olivina (Millette) Surprise. She was educated in Alburg, Vt. and married Clarence Raymond Tubbs on Oct. 6, 1941. She resided in Alburg and Ripon, Wis. and was self-employed as a chef. Pauline was a citizen of Alburg, a member of St. Amadeus Catholic Church in Vermont where she was a member of the choir and was an organist. She also was a Town, County and State Historian. She presently attended St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Ripon, Wis.

Survivors include one daughter, Winifred Grant of Ripon, Wis.; grandchildren, Lara Grant and Theodore (Sara) Grant, both of Ripon, Sara (Kris) Gould of Elkhorn, Wis., and Samantha (Manuel) Henriques of Hawaii; one great-granddaughter, Caledonia Rae Grant of Ripon, Wis.; sisters, Fredericka Patterson of New York, Catherine Valentine of Connecticut, and Theresa (Joe) Dragon of North Carolina. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, Harold; four sisters, Esther, Helen, Natalie, and Bertha; one son-in-law, Alexander Grant; and one step-daughter, Betty Jean Gay.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Ripon, Wis. with Father Robert A. Fictum officiating. Visitation was held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Inurnment will take place in Alburg, Vt. at a later date.

Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society, or St. Agnes Hospice Hope.

JANE G. (KETCHAM) CORSE

CAMBRIDGE -- Jane Gertrude (Ketcham) Corse, 83, passed away on Monday, Nov. 10, 2003, at Genesis Elder Care in Morrisville. She was born in Rutland on Jan. 10, 1920, daughter of the late Stephen and Anne (Riney) Ketcham and was raised by her parents in Wallingford. Jane graduated from Mt. St. Joseph Academy in Rutland, class of 1936. She graduated "cum laude" from Trinity College in Burlington in 1940 and worked in the Actuarial Department of Connecticut General Life Insurance Co. for two years. In 1943 Jane attended R.P.I. in Troy, N.Y. to study a special program in Aeronautical Engineering. She then worked for Curtis-Wright until 1949 when she decided to return to Vermont. Jane taught school in Cambridge High School where she met her husband, Jack Corse. They were married on Aug. 19, 1950, in Wallingford. She gave up teaching to have a family and to assist Jack in his fuel business. Jane was an active member of St. Mary's of the Assumption Church. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and will be dearly missed.

She is survived by her husband, Jack Corse of Cambridge; one son, Jack Corse, Jr. and his wife Cary of Cambridge; two grandchildren, Griffin Corse, and Mallory Corse. She was also predeceased by two sons, John Corse, and Jerry Corse; one brother,

Charles Ketcham; and one sister, Stacey Sheldon.

Visiting hours will be held at the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home on Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Nov. 14, 2003, at 11 a.m. in St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Cambridge with Reverend John McDermott. Interment will follow in the family lot in Mountain View Cemetery, Cambridge.

Memorial contributions may be made in Jane's memory to Varnum Memorial Library, Building Fund, P.O. Box 198, Jeffersonville, Vt. 05464.

Arrangements are by Hayes-Rich Funeral Home, 1176 Main St., Fairfax.

JOSEPH W. GARDNER JR.

SWANTON/ST. ALBANS -- Mr. Joseph W. Gardner, Jr., age 71, died unexpectedly Sunday evening, Nov. 9, 2003, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Richard Boutah, in Swanton. He and his wife, Mabel, have made their home with Donna and Richard for the past couple of years.

Joe was born in St. Albans, Feb. 23, 1932, son of the late Joseph W. and Lillian M. (Peters) Gardner. He spent his younger years and school time in Fitchburg, Mass. He was a member of the Vermont National Guard for many years and was employed by George Hilliker Moving Co. Later, he operated his own potato and apple delivery service.

Sept. 25, 1950, he married Mabel Robtoy. Besides his wife of 53 years, Joe is survived by his daughter Donna and her husband Richard Boutah of Swanton, son Gary and his wife Susan Gardner of St. Albans; two grandchildren, Richard Boutah Jr., Becky Jo and her husband Ian Zier; two great-grandchildren, Mickayla Boutah and Karley Zier; two brothers, Howard and his wife Anita Gardner of Georgia, and Gordon Sr. and his wife Marie Gardner of Georgia; a sister, Betty and her husband Charles Shortsleve of Fitchburg, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church. There will be no public calling hours. Interment will be in the Gardner family lot in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

PATRICK C. GILMAN

ENOSBURG FALLS -- Patrick C. Gilman, age 64, passed away Monday evening, Nov. 10, 2003, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. He was born Sept. 24, 1939, in St. Albans, the son of the late Leonard and Ila (Lumbra) Gilman.

Pat was raised on the family farm in Sheldon and was a 1957 graduate of Enosburg Falls High School. He made his home in Johnson where he was employed at Vermont Electric Co-Op and then moved to Hyde Park where he owned his own construction company. In 1972 he moved to Enosburg where he purchased and operated a farm until 1980 when he became employed at the Enosburg Falls Light Plant retiring in the early 1990's. He was a member of the IBEW local 500 and was a former member of the snowmobile club in Johnson. Pat enjoyed hunting, gardening, dancing and playing cards. Most of all he loved his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is survived by three sons and their wives, Tim and Chris Gilman of Sheldon, Terry and Sheila Gilman of Dallas, Texas, and Ted and Melinda Gilman of Highgate; two daughters, Tina Menard and her husband Mario of Sheldon, and Tammy Gilman and her friend Donald Chapple of Sheldon; a sister, and her husband, Sandra and Larry Benoit of Enosburg Falls; his grandchildren, April, Dusty, Nathan, Amanda, Ashely, Natashia, Caleb, Seth, Douglas and Samantha; two great-grandchildren, Austin and Gabriel; his god son, Josh Ramsdell; two special friends, Shirley Sweeney and Charlotte Ramsdell; three nieces; and many friends and extended family.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning, Nov. 14, 2003, at 11 at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls. Interment will be held at a later date at St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Enosburg Falls.

Friends and relatives may call on the family at the funeral home Friday morning from 10 until the hour of the funeral.

LAWRENCE "JACK" BOURGEOIS

ST. ALBANS -- Lawrence "Jack" Bourgeois, age 91, died Monday evening, Nov. 10, 2003, at the Haven Health Center, following an extended illness. Jack was born in Swanton, Feb. 19, 1912, son of the late Frederick and Sarah (Cusson) Bourgeois.

Jack was manager of the Swanton Grand Union from 1932 until 1937. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and returned to work for the A & P Stores until his retirement in 1974. Jack was a member of the American Legion Post 1, V.F.W. Post 758, and a life member of the D.A.V. Chapter 17 in Burlington.

Jack is survived by his special nieces, Dale Pouliot and Donna Rocheleau; his sisters-in-law, Avis Maynard and Viola Bourgeois; several other nieces and nephews. Jack was predeceased by his wife, Madalyn (Maynard) Bourgeois on Nov. 1, 1993; a son, Lawrence Bourgeois Jr. on Dec. 23, 1962; by two sisters, Adilda Bedard and Rosalma Bennett; and two brothers, William and Theodore Bourgeois.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Friday in St. Mary's Church. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., St. Albans, from 7 to 9 Thursday evening. Interment will be in the Bourgeois family lot in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Church, 45 Fairfield St., St. Albans, Vt. 05478.
