STEVEN HANSON STRONG

ST. ALBANS - Steven Hanson Strong, 58, of Upper Welden Street, St. Albans, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, in Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington after a long illness.

Steve was born in Montpelier on Jan. 11, 1945, the son of Willard R. and Shirley (Gear) Strong. He attended school in Montpelier and graduated from Montpelier High School in 1962 and Johnson State College.

Steve was a teacher at Missisquoi Valley Union High School for more than 30 years, retiring in 1999.

Steve was an enthusiastic New York Giants and Boston Red Sox fan. He was a member of the Champlain Country Club where he played golf. Steve was a kind and loyal friend and will be missed by all who knew him.

He was a member of Bethany United Church of Christ in Montpelier.

Steve is survived by his parents, his twin sister, Tina Corasaniti, and her husband, Joe, of Jericho, Vt., a niece and nephew, uncles, aunts and cousins.

There will be no calling hours

A private memorial service at the request of the family will be held at a later date.

Barber & Lanier Funeral and Cremation Service is in charge of the arrangements.

REBEKAH LEE BATCHELDER SIMS

CLEARWATER, KANSAS /ALBURG SPRINGS, Vt. -- Rebekah Lee Batchelder Sims, 28, completed her journey on earth Dec. 17, 2003. She was then born into the kingdom of heaven to be with her Lord.

Rebekah was born in Alburg Springs, Vt. on May 19, 1975, the daughter of Mark and Susan (Bohannon) Batchelder. She graduated from Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans, where she was member of the National Honor Society. She then went on to earn her degree in Early Education from Bryan College in Dayton, Tenn. Between her Junior and Senior years, she worked in Big Bend National Park with a music mission program where she met he future husband, Josh Sims. After completing college she taught two years in McCamey, Texas. Bekhy blessed many people during her brief stay on earth. She will be greatly missed and always in the hearts of her husband, Josh, parents Mark and Susan Batchelder, twin sister, Rachel and husband Phil, in-laws Ken and Patt Sims, and Grandmothers, Corinne Bohannon and Priscilla Batchelder. Bekhy will also be missed by her beloved cats, Snoball, Patches and Axle.

She was predeceased her grandfathers, Wyman Bohannon and Morton Batchelder.

A Celebration of her Life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2003, at 2 p.m. from the Union Bible Church in Alburg. The Reverend Dr. John C. Kehoe, pastor of Union Bible Church will officiate. Entombment will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery receiving Vault in Swanton to await spring interment in the Bush Cemetery, Alburg.

WILLIAM B. FARLEY

RURAL HALL, N.C. / SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -- William B. Farley, 63, passed away unexpectedly, Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003, in St. Albans, Vt. He was born in Lexington, Kentucky on Oct. 27, 1940, the son of Louise (Cole) Farley and the late William B. Farley, Sr. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

Bill was a long time resident of South Burlington. He was employed at IBM Essex Junction for 25 years following which he moved to North Carolina in 1993, where he was employed by Computer Task Group. More recently he had been employed as a system analyst at Wachovia Bank in Winston-Salem.

Bill was a 1966 graduate of Villanova University, Villanova, Pa. and was a former member of the South Burlington Fire Department. He was also an avid golfer, loved the computer in all aspects, and traveling, especially when he took trips to visit his family in New England.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Mary (Meighan) Farley of Rural Hall, N.C.; his mother, Louise C. Farley of West Columbia, S.C.; two daughters, Kathy Devlin and her husband, Joe, of Billerica, Mass. and Shawn Brier and her husband, Chris, of St. Albans, Vt.; two grandchildren, Tricia and Matthew Devlin; a sister, Sue Anderson and her husband, Walt, of West Columbia, S.C.; a brother, Vick Farley of Victoria, British Columbia; his father-in-law, William Meighan of Billerica, Mass.; two "grand puppies" Sadie and Madison Brier; and many close friends. He was predeceased by his father, William B. Farley, Sr. in 1991; and by his mother-in-law, Kathryn "Tooty" Meighan in 2002.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in South Burlington, Vt. on Saturday, June 5, 2004, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Resurrection Park Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Bill may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 31160, Hartford, Conn. 06150-1160. Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.

PAUL E. AUSTIN

BENNINGTON -- Paul Elliot Austin died peacefully in his sleep on Dec. 24, 2003, at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington, VT at the age of 82. He was born in Burlington, VT on July 23, 1921, to Ralph and Emma (Scott) Austin.

Paul graduated from Burlington High School in 1939, where he enjoyed his studies and athletics. He worked in the Burlington area at various jobs. Paul served in the US Army in 1942. Following his honorable discharge, he enjoyed working on the Skiff family farm in Cambridge, Vermont.

He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews, as well as grand nieces and nephews. Both his parents and his sister, Marjorie (Austin) Skiff, predeceased him.

Paul will be remembered by those who knew him as a kind, caring young man who loved his family and who met the struggles of daily life as best he could.

There will no visiting hours. Paul will rest with his sister, Marjorie (Austin) Skiff in the Jeffersonville Village Cemetery in Jeffersonville, Vt. A family graveside service will be held in the spring.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at the Waterbury Community Care Home and to the staff on C wing at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington for their kind care and support extended to Paul during his time with them.

Arrangements are by Hayes-Rich Funeral Home, 1176 Main St., Fairfax, Vt. 05454.

DOROTHY C. LAVERY

RICHFORD / BARRE -- Dorothy C. Lavery, age 95, passed away Sunday morning, Dec. 28, 2003, at the Berlin Health & Rehab Nursing Home where she had lived for the past six years.

She was born Jan. 12, 1908, in Dedham, Mass., the daughter of the late James and Lena (Donlon) Cull.

She was a resident of Richford most of her life and was a member of All Saints Catholic Church and the Ladies of St. Anne Society. She was also a former member of the Richford Senior Citizens Group.

She is survived by a son and his wife, Raymond and Patricia Lavery of Shelburne; four daughters, Margaret "Peggy" Spicer of Richford, Mary Laffey and her husband John of Cranston, R.I., Patricia Carroll and her companion David Rice of Corinth, N.Y., and Monica "Micki" Woodruff and her husband Stephen of Barre; 15 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond G. Lavery on Aug. 29, 1981. Mr. and Mrs. Lavery were married on Aug. 20, 1928. She was also predeceased by two grandsons, John Laffey Jr., and Timothy Spicer.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at 12 noon at St. Monica's Catholic Church in Barre, with Father Peter Routhier celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be next spring in All Saints Cemetery in Richford.

Visiting hours will be held today (Monday) from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 140 Main St., Richford.

MARION EDITH (LEAHY) DUSO

ENOSBURG FALLS -- Marion Edith (Leahy) Duso, age 96, passed away Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at the Haven Health Care Nursing Home in St. Albans, where she spent her last year and a half. Prior to living in St. Albans, she made her home at the Brownway Residence in Enosburg Falls for two and a half years.

She was born July 23, 1907 in East Berkshire, the daughter of the late Henry and Carrie (Lawrence) Leahy.

She attended school in East Berkshire and married Walter Duso on June 2, 1934, and they made their home in East Berkshire until they moved to Enosburg Falls in 1959.

Marion was a devoted homemaker and mother to her children. She was a member of the East Berkshire First Congregational Church and the Order of the Eastern Star Martha Washington Chapter of Enosburg Falls. She enjoyed playing cards with her family and friends.

She is survived by four children, Robert "Bobby" Duso of Enosburg Falls, John Duso and his wife Perri of South Burlington, Carolena "Carol" Jaquith and her husband Myrl of Port St. Joe, Fla., and Sandra "Sandy" Duso and her friend, Robert McLaughlin of Dedham, Mass.; 10 grandchildren, David Duso of Milton, Lori Shuren and her husband Mark of Enosburg Falls, Mark Duso and his wife Christa of Enosburg Falls, Dawn Limmer and her husband Joel of Bloomington, MN, Carol Kane and her husband Greg of Enosburg Falls, Shannon Burk and her husband Michael of Essex Jct., Dorothy Gilbar and her husband Robert of Enosburg Falls, Sheila Cavanaugh and her husband Shannon of Winooski, Julie Jaquith and her husband Joe Hayes of Milton, Eric Jaquith and his wife, Heather of Roswell, Ga.; 15 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; two brothers-in-law, Carmi Duso and his wife Phyllis of East Montpelier, and Jack Duso and his wife, Kay of Lakeport, N.H.; one sister-in-law, Helen Rainault of Colchester; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter "Bonhomme" Duso on Aug. 1, 1993. She was also predeceased by a grandson, Michael Duso; and a daughter-in-law, Beverly Duso; and six brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held today, Dec. 29, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls. Interment will be held next spring in the East Berkshire Congregational Cemetery. Relatives and friends called on the family at the funeral home Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of the funeral.

MERRILL J. "JEFF" LADD

ST. ALBANS -- Merrill J. "Jeff" Ladd, 45, a resident of this area since 1987, passed away at his home on Friday, Dec. 26, 2003. He was born in Lyndonville, Vt. on Dec. 1, 1958, the son of Merrill and Anna-Mae (Keffer) Ladd. He was married to Tina Minor on Feb. 14, 1993, at the Church of the Nazarene in St. Albans.

Jeff was a 1976 graduate of Lyndon Institute and attended LeTourneau College. He was self-employed as a heavy equipment mechanic at Ladd Mechanical and was a tech-rep for Snap-on Tools. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene and the Bellows Free Academy Advisory Board, and enjoyed cars and building.

Survivors include his wife, Tina; his parents, Merrill and Anna-Mae Ladd, all of St. Albans; a daughter, Stephanie M. Ladd of Georgia; two sons, Stephen J. Ladd of St. Albans, and Trevor A. Sargent and his girlfriend Lori Beaulieu of Brewster, N.Y.; a brother, Joel Ladd of Virginia Beach, VA; and cousins, Raye Mudgett and Lorin Ladd of St. Albans, Patricia Brank of Sylvania, Ohio, Gwendolyn Welker of Akron, Ohio, Stephanie Leupp of Bartlesville, Okla., Barbara Williams of Mt. Blanchard, Ohio, and Laurel Kerr of Centerville, Ohio.

Funeral services were held today, Monday, at 11 a.m. in the Church of the Nazarene on Upper Welden Street with Pastor Walter Mahaney officiating. Visitation was on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Vermont Center for Cancer Medicine & Blood Disorders, 792 College Parkway, Suite 207, Colchester, Vt. 05446.

GERALD VAILLANCOURT

NORTH HERO -- Gerald Vaillancourt of North Hero died on Dec. 25, 2003, in his home. He was born in Fall River, Mass. on Nov. 21, 1929, the son of Earl and Emma Vaillancourt, and settled in Vermont in 1948. He served four years in the United States Air Force followed by eight years in the reserve.

He is survived by his wife Patricia; three sons, James Vaillancourt of Albany, N.Y., and Ronald and Mark Papineau of Colchester, Vt.; two daughters Kathryn Blodgett of Bristol, Vt. and Marian Papineau of Richmond, Vt.; his stepmother, Amanda Vaillancourt of Burlington; a sister, Dorothy Martell of Fall River, Mass.; a brother, Richard of West Springfield, Mass.; and his grandchildren, Tonya Poutry, Heidi and Wayne Blodgett and Mark Joseph Papineau/Robins.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Jason Blodgett; and a sister-in-law, Rita Vaillancourt.

Gerry worked in the construction business for over 50 years, most recently at Wright & Morrissey, Inc. and Middlebury College until his retirement in 1995. Gerry was very involved in his community and the North Hero United Methodist Church where he was a trustee and choir member. His golden voice will be missed. He was an avid outdoorsman and hunter and enjoyed spending his retirement with his family and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at 2 p.m. from the North Hero United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the Vaillancourt family lot in Jerusalem Cemetery. There will be no public visitation, however the family will receive friends following the interment at a reception in the church fellowship hall.

Gifts in Gerry's memory may be made to the North Hero United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, in care of Ann Page, P.O. Box 206, North Hero, Vt. 05474.
