CHARLES S. UNWIN

SWANTON -- Charles S. Unwin, 69, a native and longtime resident of Swanton died late Tuesday evening, March 13, 2001, in the Verdelle Village Extended Care Facility in St. Albans Town.

He was born in Swanton, Dec. 24, 1931, the son of the late Dennis and Ella (Barrette) Unwin. In his earlier years he lived in several communities in the state of New Hampshire, working in a tannery and clock factory. He will be especially remembered as a talented woodworker and for his love of fishing.

Charles leaves a son, Ronald D. Unwin, and a daughter, Kelly Bettif; three brothers, Vernal, Leonard and David Unwin; three sisters, Elizabeth Young, Shirley Hibbard and Ruth Dumont and her husband Robert all of Swanton, as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Keith Unwin; three brothers, Eugene, Oscar and Caroll Unwin, and a sister, Pauline Unwin.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 16, 2001, at 3 p.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton. Father Maurice U. Boucher, SSE, the director of St. Anne's Shrine in Isle La Motte will officiate. Interment will follow in the Unwin family lot in Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call at Kidder Memorial Home on Friday from 2 p.m. until the hour of the funeral.

NELSON YOUNG, III

PELZER, S.C. -- Nelson Roland Young, III, 68 of 385-B Holland Ford Road, husband of Nancy Lee Ahrent Young, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at his home. Born in Burlington, Vt. he was a son of the late Nelson Roland, Jr. and Yvonne Marie Dennis Young. He was a retired plumber, a Catholic, a member of American Legion Williamston Post 121, and an Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Surviving are his wife of the home; daughters, Phyllis Knowlton of Chatham, N.Y., Muriel Denue of Grafton, N.Y., Elaine Phillips of Brunswick, N.Y. and Yvonne Collins and Nannette Troville, both of Pelzer; sons, David Young of Johnsonville, N.Y., Nelson P. Young and Bobby Joe Young, both of Stillwater, N.Y., and Gerald Young of Milton, Vt.; Teddy Young of Burlington, Vt., and Freddy Young of Fairfax, Vt.; sisters, Felina Bergeron of Las Cruces, N.M., and Gerry Martell of Milton, Vt.; 30 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Greenville by Father Anthony Droze. Burial will follow in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

The family is at the home and will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Gray Mortuary, 52 Main St., Pelzer, SC 29669.

RACHEL MARGARET GAGNE

HIGHGATE CENTER ­ Mrs. Rachel Margaret Gagne, 73, a longtime resident of this community died in her home on Saint Armand Road late Monday evening, March 12, 2001, surrounded by her loving family.

Rachel was born in Franklin April 26, 1927, the daughter of the late Victor and Yvonne (Gagne) Bilodeau. She attended schools in Highgate and St. Albans Bay and on Sept. 15, 1945, married Rosaire Gagne who survives her.

She was an active member of St. Louis Parish where she belonged to the Ladies of St. Anne and taught for many years in the parish Religious Education Program. For thirty years Rachel and her husband Rosaire were very active in the Franklin County Maple Festival and last year were honored as the Maple Festival Parade Grand Marshalls. She will always be remembered as a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother, great grandmother and for the many crafts that she made each year.

In addition to her husband Rosaire of Highgate Center, Rachel leaves six sons and their wives, Paul and Linda Gagne, Richard and Pam Gagne, Ernest and Arlene Gagne, David Gagne and Tina Gabree, all of Highgate Center, and Gerald and Bonnie Gagne of Highgate Springs, and Rene and Suzette Gagne of Swanton; two daughters and their husbands, Arlene and John Durkee of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Pauline and Paul Klassen of Chubbuck, Idaho; six brothers, Germain and Pat Bilodeau of St. Albans, Lionel Bilodeau of Milton, Andre Bilodeau of Florida, Reginald and Susan Bilodeau of St. Albans, Norman Bilodeau of Highgate, and Don Bilodeau of Milton; seven sisters, Doris Nadeau of Highgate Center, Anita and Paul Therrien of Swanton, Theresa and Octave Blouin of St. Albans, Pauline Greenia of Sheldon, Louise and Alton Smith of Johnson, Alise and Roger Estell of Somers, Conn., and Gisele Smith of Burlington; 21 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a grandson, Steven Gagne on Dec. 9, 1978, and a brother, John Bilodeau Jan. 5, 1977.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, March 16, 2001, at 11 a.m. from St. Louis Roman Catholic Church, Lamkin Street, Highgate Center with interment following in the Gagne family lot in St. Louis Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton on Thursday, March 15, 2001, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Gifts in Rachel's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, Vermont Division, 150 Kennedy Drive, So. Burlington, VT 05403.

ELVA J. WELLS

ST. ALBANS-Elva J. Wells, 81, a lifelong resident of this area, passed away Sunday evening, March 11, 2001 at Holiday House Nursing Facility where she had been a resident since last June. She was born in St. Albans Town June 6, 1919 the daughter of the late Harold and Helen (Vaughn) Conger. She was the widow of Charles E. Wells who died March 2, 1966. They were married January 7, 1937.

Elva was employed as a Laboratory Technician for H. P. Hoods for 15 years, retiring in 1981. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and a former member of Green Mountain Post #1, American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed house cleaning, country music, dominos, puzzles and reading. She took care of her mother for many years.

Of fourteen children, survivors include three sisters; Gladys Minckler and Myrtle Duprey and Normand Ploof of St. Albans, Gloria and Marvin Sweeney of Plainville, CT, a brother, Carl Martell of Swanton. She also leaves two sisters-in-law, Margaret Cusson and Nettie Cusson of St. Albans, a brother-in-law, Morton Wells of New York, a special friend, Honora "Bud" Bechard of St. Albans and many nieces, nephews and cousins including a special niece, Linda Stell who provided much of Elva's care. She was predeceased by her husband and parents and a son, Charles E. Wells, Jr., July 28, 1959, brothers, Lee R. Conger, Floyd Martell, William Conger, Charles Conger, Herbert Martell and sisters, Celia Geraw and Leona Aldrich.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 A.M. in the Heald Funeral Chapel. The Reverend Elizabeth Griffin will officiate. Interment will be this spring in the family lot in Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Holiday House Lyceum Program, 642 Sheldon Road, St. Albans, VT 05478. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 3:30-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans.

RUBY KATHERINE BROE

ORLEANS ­ Mrs. Ruby Katherine Broe, 83, of Orleans, died peacefully March 11, 2001, in Newport. She was born Oct. 29, 1917 in Fairfield, Vt., the daughter of Arthur and Myrtle Ladieu Hughes. In 1933 she married Bert Broe who predeceased her. Mrs. Broe farmed most of her life in the area. Her greatest joy was to live with and care for her two daughters, Charlene and Gloria. Her hobbies included reading, church visits and she had a great love for farming and animals. She is survived by the following children:

Wayne Broe of Orleans, Norman Broe and his wife Jane of Brownington, Charlene Kuchinskas of Brownington, Gloria Broe of Brownington, Larry Broe and his wife Claire of Newport, Bruce Broe of Chicago, Ill., Diane Champagne and her husband Rodney of Florida, Myron Broe and his wife Debbie of St. Johnsbury. She is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Pauline Darby of Brownington, many grandchildren, great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She is survived by the following brothers and sisters, Pearl Moll, Ruth LeBelle, Shirley Turner, Phyllis Hall, Elizabeth Day, Mitchell Hughes, Reginald Hughes, Lawrence Hughes, Arthur Hughes, Jr.

She is also survived by a special friend, Phyllis Kennison.

She was predeceased by a son, David Broe and by two daughters, Annette and Veronica Broe, and by a sister, Freda Chaplin. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at the Church of God, Crawford Road, Derby with the Rev. Laurence Wall officiating. Friends may call at the church from 10 a.m. until the hour of the funeral on Wednesday. Spring interment in West Charleston Cemetery. Should friends desire, contributions in his memory may be made to the Orleans-Essex VNA and Hospice, Inc., 46 Lakemont Road, Newport, VT 05855. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Curtis-Britch Funeral Homes, Inc. locally family owned and operated.

RICHARD P. PRIOR

APALACHIN, N.Y. ­ Richard P. Prior, 71, of Apalachin, N.Y. died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000. He is predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Pauline and a brother, Thomas. He is survived by his wife Jean Prior, Apalachin; one daughter, Catherine and Richard Goodwin, Tully, N.Y.; one son, Richard P. Prior, Jr., Apalachin; two grandchildren, Andrew and Sean Goodwin; two brothers, Dr. John and Elizabeth Prior, Syracuse, and Dr. Paul and Margaret Prior, Saddle River, N.J.; one sister-in-law, Nancy Prior, Encino, Calif.; several nieces and nephews. He was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church, an avid golfer, a member of the Tioga Country Club, a Korean War veteran; and was awarded two Bronze Service Stars with the U.S. Army.

A funeral mass was held Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, from Our Lady of Sorrows Church. Burial at the convenience of the family.

KENNETH SAMUEL TOZER

CASPER, WY. ­ A memorial service for Kenneth Samuel Tozer, 75, was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, at Bustards Funeral Home and Crematory with the Rev. DeToni-Hill of First United Methodist officiating. Military rites will be accorded by the United Veterans Council of Natrona Council. He died Feb. 22, 2001, in Casper.

He was born April 22, 1925, in Staten Island, N.Y., the son of Samuel and Mae (Carroll) Tozer. On Nov. 29, 1952 he married Lillian Hall of St. Albans, Vt. in Paris, Ky. Mr. Tozer was the son-in-law of Effie C. Hall and the late Ernest A. Hall. He served in the Navy during WWII and in the U.S. Merchant Marines. He worked for the Enterprise in Paris, Ky., and the St. Albans Messenger in St. Albans, Vt. He began his career at the Casper-Star Tribune in 1956 and worked at the paper for 33 years before retiring as composing room supervisor.

Survivors include a son, Samuel Tozer of Casper, two daughters, Rosemary Tozer-DeGhionno of Encinitis, Calif., and Gail Lawson of Casper, Wy. He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials to the Natrona County Public Library, 307 E. Second Street, Casper, WY 82601 or they may be left at Bustards Funeral Home and Crematory, which is in charge of arrangements.

MARIE JEANNE GAGNE

HIGHGATE SPRINGS ­ Marie Jeanne Gagne, 87, a longtime resident of Highgate Springs died late Friday evening, March 9, 2001, in the Holiday House Nursing Facility in St. Albans Town.

She was born in Roxton Falls, Quebec, Canada, March 19, 1913, the daughter of the late Henri and Melina (Brouillard) Gagne. She lived in Massachusetts for several years working as a seamstress in several sewing shops in the Springfield and Greenfield areas. She also lived fifteen years in the Burlington area working in the Winooski Woolen Mill and in later years in Swanton and Highgate worked with Lillian DeCelle, Alice Patterson and Jeanne Dandurand. Marie Jeanne will always be remembered as an expert quilt maker having made quilts for many people throughout New England and New York. She was a longtime parishioner of The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Swanton.

Marie Jeanne leaves two sisters, Mrs. Alberta Gagne of St. Albans Town and Mrs. Lucienne L'Ecuyer of Natick, Mass., as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her first husband Oscar Nadeau and her second husband, Henry Waryez; brothers, Leo, Eliodore, Elphege, Elzear, Pierre, Henry and Simeon Gagne, and her sisters, Alice Laroche, Andrenna Young and Yvonne Bilodeau.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at 10 a.m. from St. Louis Church, Lamkin Street in Highgate Center. Interment will follow in the Gagne family lot in St. Louis Cemetery in Highgate Center. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton on Tuesday evening, March 13, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m.

SUSAN T. BOYLES

FRANKLIN, VT./BOGALUSA, LA. - Susan T. Boyles, 75, passed away Saturday, March 10, 2001 in the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans. She was born in Franklinton, La. April 9, 1925, the daughter of the late Samuel and Pearly (Jenkins) Taylor. She was the widow of William Boyles who died in September of 1999.

Mrs. Boyles moved from Bogalusa, Louisiana after the death of her husband and made her home with her son and daughter-in-law, Ben and Robin Boyles in Franklin, Vermont. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Bogalusa.

In addition to her son, Ben and his wife, Robin, she leaves a brother, William Taylor of Wisconsin, two granddaughters, Wendy Marie Blatman and Teletha Suzanne Dunnam, two great granddaughters, Brooke and Becky Blatman, and a great grandson, Stanley Dean Dunnam.

Funeral services will be held from the Brown-McGehee Funeral Home, 610 Avenue F, Bogalusa, La. Local arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans.

KENNETH ALTON GILLILAN

ST. ALBANS/BARRE -- Kenneth A. Gillilan, 76, passed away Friday morning at the Rowan Court Health and Rehabilitation Center in Barre. He was born in Fletcher, VT. May 4, 1924 the son of the late Archie and Mildred (Crozier) Gillilan.

Kenneth raised chickens and enjoyed the country life. He was an avid checker player.

Kenneth leaves a brother, Harry E. Gillilan of St. Albans, a sister, Corrine M. Camley of Burlington and a close friend, Cheryn LaRocque of Brookfield, VT with whom he made his home for many years. He was predeceased by a brother, Harold Gillilan on March 27, 1988.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel. Pastor Mary Beth Hutchinson will officiate. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon until the time of the funeral. Interment will be this spring in Binghamville Cemetery in Fletcher. Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans.

LEON PAUL LANGEVIN

HIGHGATE CENTER ­ Leon Paul Langevin, 48, a resident of this community for 25 years died suddenly early Friday morning, March 9, 2001, in the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

Leon was born in St. Albans Aug. 30, 1952, the son of Paul and Betty (Arnoldy) Langevin. He attended St. Anne's Academy until its closing and graduated from Swanton High School with the Class of 1970. On Oct. 25, 1975, he married the former Barbara Radzyminski who survives him.

He was associated for 28 years with Fonda Container of St. Albans and was a member of the PACE International Paper Workers Union Local 1-0345. He was also a member of St. Louis Parish in Highgate Center and a Third Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Albans Council.

Leon leaves his wife Barbara of Highgate Center and his children, John Langevin of Highgate Center and Sarah Chevalier and her husband Eric of Swanton; his parents, Paul and Betty Langevin of Swanton; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Rose Radzyminski of St. Albans; four brothers, Steve Langevin and his wife Jill of Morrisonville, N.Y., Stan Langevin and his wife Kathy of St. Peters, Mo., Marvin Langevin and his wife Marie of Highgate Springs, and Neil Langevin of Dillon, Colo., as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at 11 a.m. from St. Louis Church, Lamkin Street, Highgate Center. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton on Monday, March 12, 2001, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Gifts in Leon's memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Vermont Affiliate, 77 Hegeman Avenue, Colchester, VT 05446.

GERALDINE P. ROOT

GRAND ISLE -- Geraldine P. Root, 69, died unexpectedly Thursday, March 8, 2001 at her home in Grand Isle.

Mrs. Root was born on Aug. 15, 1931, in Burlington, the daughter of Solomon and Mary (Harris) Reuschel. She was married for over 44 years to Arthur Root, who survives her.

Geraldine was a memeber of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Grand Isle and had been employed by the City of Burlington. In addition to her husband Arthur, she is survived by her son Charles Root, Sr. of Milton, her grandson Charles Root, Jr. of Milton, her granddaughter, Cheryl Duncan of Kent, Wash., her brother Raymond Reuschel of Burlington, her sisters Betty Blanchard of Burlington and Doris Gordon and Joyce Lafountain, both of Essex Jct., and by many uncles, aunts, and cousins. She was predeceased by her brothers, Charles and Howard Reuschel.

A funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Grand Isle by Rev. Philip Branon. Burial will be in the Grand Isle Cemetery in the spring. Visiting hours will be held Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home located at 237 Rt. 7 South in Milton.
