SHIRLEY E. SHAFER

FAIRFAX, Vt. / COCONUT CREEK, Fla. -- Shirley Eleanor Shafer, 62, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at her residence in Coconut Creek, Fla. She was born in St. Albans, Vt. on June 19, 1941, daughter of the late Arden D. and Eleanor (Ward) Billado. Shirley was a graduate of BFA Fairfax, class of 1959.

Shirley, from your siblings, we will cherish the many good memories from our years growing up in Fairfax, as you will always be in our thoughts.

Mom, your children will always remember you in our hearts as a loving mother, grandmother and sister.

She is survived by one son, David Shafer of Coconut Creek, Fla.; one daughter, Kimberly Shafer of Coconut Creek, Fla.; two brothers,
Edward Billado of Fairfax, Vt., and Reginald Billado of South West Harbor, Maine; one sister, Ardis Meunier of Fairfax, Vt.; three grandchildren, Miranda, Chase and Chance of Coconut Creek, Fla.; an uncle, Edward Ward of Underhill; an aunt, Laura Arpin of St. Albans; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was also predeceased by her brother, Jerry Billado.

There will be no public visiting hours. A graveside memorial service with inurnment in the family lot in Sanderson Corners Cemetery, Fairfax, Vt. will be held at the convenience of the family in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made in Shirley's memory to Hermann Burn Center, 6411 Fannin St., Houston, Texas 77030-1501. Arrangements are by Hayes-Rich Funeral Home, 1176 Main St., Fairfax, Vt. 05454.

HAROLD F. KELLEY

ST. ALBANS -- Harold F. Kelley, 85, a life long resident of this area, passed away on Friday evening, Jan. 16, 2004, at the Holiday House Nursing Facility. He was born July 12, 1918, in St. Albans, the son of the late Leslie and Ida Mae (Longley) Kelley. He was married to Prudence (Lyon) Kelley who survives him.

"Kelley" was a 1938 graduate of Bellows Free Academy and then served as a bombardier in the United States Air Force as a Second Lieutenant during World War II. He was then employed as a letter carrier for the U. S. Postal Service in St. Albans, retiring in 1977 after 35 years of service. He was a 50 year member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. "Kelley" was an avid outdoors man, and enjoyed hunting and the camp he built in the Northeast Kingdom and was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. During the 1950's he was the Vermont State pistol champion and Quebec Provincial pistol champion. He was also a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Survivors include his wife, Prudence of St. Albans; a daughter, Connie Long and her husband Allen of Leadville, Colo.; two granddaughters, Stephanie Long of Atlanta, Ga., and Alison Long of Denver, Colo.; a grandson, Scott Kelley and his wife, Coby, of California, and a great-grandson, Davyn Kelley; a daughter-in-law, Betsy Kelley of Arlington, Texas; and a special aunt, Florence Kelley Thompson of Brownington, Vt.. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Jeannette C. "Tad" Kelley in June of 1993; an infant son, Stephen C. Kelley in 1943; a son Keith A. Kelley in October of 2001; a sister, Hazel Marifiote in October of 1986; and a niece, Margaret Cloe in January of 2000.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, at 1 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans with the Reverend Marcheta Townsend officiating. There will be no visitation.

DONALD F. GABREE, SR.

ALBURG -- Mr. Donald F. Gabree, Sr., age 66, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at his home. He was born in Georgia, April 6, 1937, son of the late Raymond and Eva (Burnier) Gabree. Most of his working life he was an equipment operator on construction sites throughout northwestern Vermont. Don served in the U.S. Army from 1955 until 1958 when he was deployed to Korea for two years during that time.

In 1962 he married Leila LaPlante. She died Oct. 19, 2003.

Donald is survived by his four children, Edmund E. Gabree, Sr. and his wife Andrea, Elizabeth Boudreau and her companion Steve Scott, Dennis Gabree, all of Alburg, Donald Gabree, Jr. of St. Albans; 11 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; his brother, Perley Gabree of Swanton; sisters Pauline Blush of Diamond, Wash., Wray Blouin of Deland, Fla., Valencia "Honey" Baker of Deland, Fla., and Katherine Sicard of Plainfield, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by his brother, Raymond Gabree.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, at 7 p.m. in the Brady & Levesque Chapel, 86 South Main St., St. Albans. There will be no calling hours. Interment will be next spring in the Gabree family lot in Hope Cemetery in Georgia.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

SANDRA R. COUSINEAU

ST. ALBANS / FRANKLIN -- Mrs. Sandra R. Cousineau, age 63, died at her home Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, following an extended illness. She was born in Fairfield on Oct. 7, 1940, daughter of Sedrick and Marion (Callan) Abell.

Her survivors include her five children, Rolla "Tom: and his wife Linda Cousineau of St. Angele de Premont, Quebec, Lisa Pafundi of Cambridge, Tammy Cousineau of Crossville, Tenn., Robert "Joe" and his wife Lisa Cousineau of Geneva, Wis., Mikelle and her husband Dennis Delisle of Enosburg; nine grandchildren, Alex Cousineau, Jacob Pafundi, Sarah Tuttle, Mark Tuttle, Zackery Cousineau, Naomi Patterson, Jessie Patterson; her father, Sedrick Abell of St. Albans; brother and sisters and their spouses, Sally and Harvey Boudreau of Franklin, Rodney and Maryln Abell of Montgomery, Carol and Don Richard of Franklin; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her infant daughter, Sarah, several years ago and by her mother, Marion Callan Abell on May 23, 1996.

ALICE ATWOOD SPAULDING

SOUTH BURLINGTON - Alice Atwood Spaulding, 85, died peacefully at her home in South Burlington on Jan. 13, 2004. A native Vermonter, she loved to travel and made trips to every continent except Antarctica, including visits to Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavia, Great Britain, Ireland, Greece, Egypt, South America, Russia and Eastern Europe.

Gifted with a brilliant mind, Alice graduated with a B.A. in English literature from Middlebury College in 1940 and earned an M.A. in teaching from the University of Vermont in 1968. She was an avid reader and writer. Her livelong journals will be a treasure for generations to come, as she lived an active and varied life from living on a farm in Springfield to running a country store in Danville, to teaching English at South Burlington High School.

Alice was always active in her community from baking pies for church suppers to visiting shut-ins and preparing taxes for the elderly. She was a member of the College Street Congregational Church, where she served as an usher and treasurer for many year. She was also a member of the Order of the Easter Star, Ladies Oriental Shrine, the Athena Club (past president) and the AAUW.

Alice is survived by her daughter, Anne (Robbie) Williams; her son, Roger (Margaret) Spaulding; a nephew/son James N. Atwood; her sister, June A. Bumps; grandsons Roger (Tammy) Beauregard and Robbie (Joanie) Beauregard; her granddaughter, Julie (Bret) Martzke; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Roger F. Spaulding, on July 25, 1986.

Viewing will be held at the Corbin and Palmer Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 16, with Temple Chapter 75, O.E.S., conducting its service at 4:30 p.m. A funeral service to honor her life will be held Saturday, Jan. 17, at 1 p.m. in the College Street Congregational Church in Burlington. Burial will be in Quechee in the spring.

RICHARD MILLER HEWITT

WHITE RIVER JCT. -- Richard Miller Hewitt, 69, passed away unexpectedly Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at his home in White River. He was born in North Pomfret, Vt. on April 25, 1934, the son of the late Joseph D. and Natalie (Miller) Hewitt.

Richard was a Korean Conflict Veteran serving in the U.S. Army. He had been employed at Bond Optics in Lebanon, New Hampshire.

Survivors include his brother Jason D. Hewitt and his wife, Fifi of St. Albans; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in the Hewitt family lot in the Hewittville Cemetery in North Pomfret.

MICHELLE LEE GAREY

NEWPORT / NORTH TROY -- Michelle Lee Garey, 58, of North Troy, passed away in Newport on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004.

She was born in Highland, N.Y. on March 21, 1945, the daughter of Casper and Ada (Burligh) Davis. Michelle enjoyed painting pictures, crafts and gardening.

She is survived by her children, Melissa Garey of Richford, Erin Garey of North Troy, Michael Garey of St. Albans, Chris Ann Castelos of St. Albans, Valerie Mickols of Amsterdam, N.Y., Lorie Falcone of Little Falls, N.Y., Michael Gilchrist of Richford, and George Rogers of Vergennes; her sisters, Phyllis Davis of Barre, Estella Diaz of Highland, N.Y., and Cathy Kierstead of Vancouver, British Columbia; 26 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, and by a brother.

Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.

JOSEPH WILLIAM LETOURNEAU

SWANTON -- Joseph William Letourneau, 61, a lifelong resident of the Swanton community, died suddenly Saturday morning, Jan. 10, 2004, at the Northwestern Medical Center.

Born in Swanton, May 13, 1942, he was the son of Joseph and Josie (Martin) Letourneau. He attended Swanton schools and the Community College of Colorado. On Sept. 5, 1964, he married the former Theresa Vanslette, who survives him.

For 33 years Joe had been associated with Fonda Container as a machine operator. He faithfully served his country for 10 years in the United States Army and was a Veteran of the Vietnam Era. He was honorably discharged on June 12, 1970.

In addition to his wife Theresa of Swanton, Joe leaves his mother, Mrs. Josie Letourneau of Swanton; his daughter, Angela McMillan and her husband Bronson of Vero Beach, Fla.; two sons, William Letourneau of Highgate and Christopher Letourneau and his wife Cheryl of Georgia; three sisters, Patricia Bruyette and her husband Clarence of Swanton, Cynthia Lasnier and her husband Roger of Swanton, and Sheila Benson and her husband Frank of St. Albans; one brother, James Letourneau and his fiancee Annette Crawford of St. Albans; six grandchildren, Andrew, Jessica, Kyle and Hannah Letourneau all of Georgia, and Michael and Meaghan McMillan of Fairfield. Also surviving are his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Terrance and Freda Rand of St. Albans Bay, Ronald Reynolds of Swanton and Shirley Gaudette of Montgomery; five very close friends, Charles Rice, Ken Reynolds, Rene Parah, Leslie Moreau and Larry Rochon; as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his father, Joseph Letourneau on Aug. 28, 1977; a sister-in-law, Maxine Reynolds; and a brother-in-law, Vernon Gaudette.

Joe's family wishes to give special thanks to the members of Missisquoi Valley Rescue and also the medical staff of the Northwestern Medical Center and the Radiation Oncology Department at Fletcher Allen Health Care for the excellent care and support given to Joe and his family over the past several months.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at 2 p.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton. Father John J. Meagher, SSE, pastor of The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary will officiate. Interment with full military honors will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday evening, Jan. 13, 2004, from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Wednesday afternoon from 1 p.m. until the hour of the funeral.

LORETTA ROSE ST. FRANCIS

SWANTON -- Loretta Rose St. Francis, 56, a longtime resident of Covey Drive, died early Thursday afternoon, Jan. 8, 2004, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care Facility following a sudden illness.

Born in Fairfield, Nov. 16, 1947, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Yvonne (Robtoy) LaPlant. She attended schools in Fairfield and St. Albans and on Feb. 28, 1967, married Ronald J. St. Francis Sr., who survives her.

At the time of her death Loretta was associated with the Econo Lodge in St. Albans City. She will always be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother with a great sense of humor. Loretta was the nerve center of the family. She always put others first and had a magical way of solving any problem and making everything come together.

In addition to her husband Ronald of Swanton, Loretta leaves two daughters, Karen and Laurie St. Francis and her companion Josh Bessette, all of Swanton; three sons, Darrell LaPlant of St. Albans Town, Ronald St. Francis Jr. and his wife Marie and Kevin St. Francis and his companion Stacey Fendley all of Swanton; a daughter-in-law, Kimberly St. Francis of Swanton; nine grandchildren, Melinda Benoit, Cory LaPlant, Jessica St. Francis and Shaye, Kevin, Cody, Riley, Shania and Shanika St. Francis. Also surviving is a sister, Bertina "Bunny" Wells of Highgate Falls; her mother-in-law, Hilda St. Francis of Swanton; and two very special friends, Pam Deso and Kimberly Devost of St. Albans; as well as several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and nephews, Mike and George Wells; and a niece, Sarah Wells.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at 2 p.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton. Father Jean Paul Laplante, pastor emeritus of St. Louis Roman Catholic Church in Highgate Center, will officiate. Interment will follow in St. Louis Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 1 p.m. until the hour of the funeral.
