RAYMOND A. SPRANO, SR.
ST. ALBANS BAY -- Mr. Raymond A. Sprano, Sr., age 59, died unexpectedly, Saturday, April 24, 2004, while he and his wife were attending the Bassmasters Nationals, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was born in Burlington, Sept. 22, 1944, son of the late Joseph and Florence (Russin) Sprano.

He was the owner and founder of the Raymond A. Sprano, Sr., & Sons, Inc. Construction Company. Raymond was a founder and the first president of the Vermont Bass Federation, a position he held for four years. He was a member of the Green Mountain State Bassmasters and qualified as the Vermont Regional Representative to the Nationals in 2000 and 2004. In Tulsa, he was a Bassmaster Nationals Classic qualifier. Raymond was always supportive of children's programs, willingly sharing his boat and working freely with Casting Kids and the Junior State Bassmasters.

Raymond married Sheila Pidgeon on June 6, 1964. Besides his wife he is survived by their sons, Raymond Sprano, Jr., and his wife Carol of Woodsville, N.H., Jay and his wife Buffy Sprano of Alburg; six grandchildren, Christia, James, Brandon, Victoria "Raven", Ashley and Sara Sprano; his brothers and their wives, William and Linda Sprano of St. Albans, Joe and Claire Sprano of Alburg, Mike and Judy Sprano of Williamstown, Al and Lori Sprano of Richmond; sisters and their husbands, Sandra and Casino Lomartire of Colchester, Dora and Robert Polumba of Oakville, Conn., Carol Tudhope of Winooski; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Richard Sprano in 1988.

A gathering will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Knights of Columbus Hall, South Main Street, St. Albans for a time of sharing. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., St. Albans, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

AURORE "ORIA" C. LAWTON

BENNINGTON -- Mrs. Aurore "Oria" C. Lawton, 69, widow of Robert G. Lawton, a resident of Morgan Street, Bennington, died Sunday, April 24, 2004, at Albany Medical Center after being stricken at home by a sudden illness earlier in the day.

Born in St. Albans, May 2, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Lonetin (Gendreau) Robert. She received her early education in the Enosburg Falls schools and was a 1952 graduate of Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans.

Mr. and Mrs. Lawton were married July 25, 1953, in St. Albans. Mr. Lawton died Aug. 30, 2000.

Mrs. Lawton was employed for over 30 years at the First Vermont Bank and Trust Company in Bennington. At the time of her retirement in April of 2000, she was serving as the head teller at the bank.

She was an active member of the Bennington Club and had been active in several bowling leagues in Bennington for many years. She enjoyed traveling, dancing and her exercise classes at the Dynamic Fitness Zone.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Karen P. Lawton Christian and Robert Christian of Pittsford, two sons and daughters-in-law, James R. and Pamela Lawton of Shaftsbury, and Dean P. and Connie Lawton of Jericho; six grandchildren, Jo Beth and Jason Lawton, Bradley and Michael Christian, Rachel Gauthier and Michael Marcoux; four great-grandchildren, Brandon, Colin, Kyle and Jacob; a close friend, Ron Weatherby of Canada; four sisters, Simone Burns of Sheldon, Theresa Demar of Montgomery Center, Claire Suter of Spokane, Wash. and Pauline Lefebvre of Hoosick Falls, N.Y.; two brothers, Paul Robert of Montgomery Center and Hector Robert of Enosburg Falls; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Thursday, April 29, 2004 at 10 a.m. with a prayer and from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 10:30 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. The Wake Service will be offered Wednesday.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.

Should friends desire, contributions in Mrs. Aurore Lawton's memory may be made to either the Bennington Rescue Squad or the Green Mountain Chapter, American Red Cross through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, Vt. 05201.

AUTHUR YOUNG SR.

RICHFORD -- Authur Young Sr., age 90, husband of the late Jessie (Pollender) Young, passed away Saturday morning, April 24, 2004, at the Holiday House Nursing Home in St. Albans.

He was born in Pennsylvania on Sept. 17, 1913, and had made his home in Richford since 1971, where he was employed at Sweat & Comings Furniture Factory for many years, retiring in 1983.

He is survived by his son, Authur Young Jr., and his wife Joann; his grandchildren, Sabrina and Brandon Young; two step-grandsons, Angelo and Jeremy Pappano, all of Richford; three sisters-in-law, Gladys Lumbra of Franklin, Reba Ryea and her husband David of Richford, and Eloise Demar and her husband Robert "Bud" of Enosburg Falls; two brothers-in-law, Wilford "Joe" Pollender of Richford, and Ernest Pollender and his wife Kathleen of Bradford; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he was predeceased by two brothers-in-law, Frederick and Freeman Pollender; and four sisters-in-law, Ellareta Wetherby, Glendora Birch, Hilda Chaplin, and Louise Owens.

A graveside memorial service will be held Wednesday evening, April 28, 2004 at 7 in the All Saints Cemetery in Richford.

Visiting hours will be held at the Spears Funeral Home, 140 Main St. Richford, on Wednesday, April 28, 2004, from 5 to 6:45 p.m.

EVA MARIE COTE

BURLINGTON -- Eva M. Cote, 98, of Burlington, died on Saturday, April 24, 2004, at Starr Farm Nursing Center.

She was born in St. Albans on Nov. 2, 1905, the daughter of the late John and Malvina (Audette) Rogers. Eva worked for several years as a bookkeeper for many small businesses in the St. Albans area. On June 26, 1931, she was married to her husband of 57 years, William Cote. He predeceased her in 1988.

Eva was an avid New York Yankees fan, but her greatest joy was her family and home where she was able to live independently until two weeks before her death. She cherished the time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchild. Her love, support, and friendship will be missed by all who knew her, especially her family.

Eva is survived by her daughter, Sandra Mable and her husband Donal of Shelburne; two grandchildren, Stacy Bailey of Monkton and Shawn Mable of Shelburne; her great-grandson, George Bailey IV of Monkton; and two sisters, Margaret Bates of Starr Farm Nursing Center in Burlington, and Leona Rogers of Winooski. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters, Helen Benoit, Alma Bonin, Rita Brodeur, Ginger Riley, Mildred Winegar, and Catherine McCann; and two brothers, Edward and Joseph Rogers.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff of McClure 6 for the care they gave to Eva, and the Starr Farm Nursing Center, Chittenden Unit Rehabilitation, for showing such compassion and care to Eva and her family during her brief stay.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at 11 a.m. in Christ the King Roman Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Lake View Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Eva's wishes were to have mass said in memory of "Bill and Eve." Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the Ready Funeral Home South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Rd., Burlington. DINESH K. TEWARSON

ESSEX JUNCTION -- Dinesh Kumar Tewarson, 67, born July 28, 1936, son of the late S.B. and Edith (Money) Tewarson of Bareilly, India, passed away April 22, 2004, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, following a long fight of failing health for many years.

He earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Lucknow University in India, a bachelor's degree in education from Agra University India, a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, and a master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Vermont.

Dinesh married the former Mary L. Gonyea on June 25, 1966, in the First United Methodist Church in Burlington.

After college he worked as an electrical engineer, joining IBM in Fishkill, N.Y. in 1966 and within a couple years transferred to IBM in Essex, retiring in 1994.

Dinesh's interests were traveling abroad, camping, photography, entertaining, playing bridge, and history. He was dedicated to his family, friends and career. He was an active member in the First United Methodist Church, Wesley Club, and a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Family and close friends were important in Dinesh's life and he made many friends during his life's journey. His greatest gift was cultivating friends from many cultures and his life energy, spirit, and presence touched them.

He is survived by his wifeof 38 years, Mary (Gonyea) Tewarson; his son, Raj Tewarson of Lowell, Mass.; two brothers Dr. Ivan Tewarson and his wife Barbara of Ohio, and Lalit Tewarson and his wife Irene of India; two sisters, Dr. Vinod Noah and her husband Dr. Arnold Noah of India, and Tilottma Souri of California; nieces Tina Linburgh, Vaneeta Noah, Nandita Smiechewicz, Sarvo Martin and their spouses; nephew Sanjai Noah and his wife; cousins Dr. Reginald and Ghenwah Tewarson, Drs. Archi and Pam Tewarson; and numerous other family including Jagdish and Margaret Singh and their family of Florida, Suresh and Rashita Tewarson, Sunil and D'Ann Tewarson, Tara Tewarson, Anil Tewarson, Angelica Tewarson, Ashish Tewarson, and Sarah Martin.

There will be no public visiting hours. A Memorial Service and Celebration of Dinesh's life will be held Saturday, May 8, 2004, at 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 21 Buell Street, Burlington, Vt. with Reverend Joy Lowenthal officiating. A reception will follow the memorial service. Inurnment will be at a later date at the convenience of the family.

RITA B. BEVINS

ST. ALBANS TOWN -- Rita B. Bevins, 83, died Thursday afternoon in the Holiday House Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility in St. Albans Town surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Elizabethtown, N.Y., Dec. 6, 1920, she was the daughter of the late James John and Mary Ann Whalen. She attended schools in New York and was married to Frank Bevins, Sr., who predeceased her in June of 1986.

Rita often attended Club Respite in St. Albans, was an avid reader and a member of the Readers Digest Book Club. She will be remembered for her great love of nature, especially birds, flowers and trees.

Rita is survived by three sons, Bruce Wayne Whalen, Sr. and his wife Ilda of Highgate Center, John Lyman Bevins and his wife Rose of Florida, and Frank Henry Bevins, Jr. and his wife Betty of Milton; three brothers, Edward Henry Whalen, Robert Harris Whalen and John James Whalen Jr.; four sisters, Dorothy Gardner, Pearl Anna Farley, Josa L. Calhune and Mary Martha Bevins; six grandchildren, Bruce Whalen, Jr. and his wife Christie, Wendy Campbell, Joyce Whalen, John Bevins Jr. and his wife Randi, Amber Winsor and her husband Scott, Lorinda Buck and her husband John; eight great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. She also leaves her extended family at The Holiday House, especially her dear friend Ralph Machia.

Graveside Services and Interment will take place Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at 11 a.m. in the Georgia Plains Cemetery in Georgia Plains. Father Maurice U. Boucher, SSE will officiate. There will be no public calling hours.

Gifts in Rita's memory may be made to The Holiday House Activity Fund, in care of, Linda Bruyette, 642 Sheldon Road, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton.

JOSEPH ARTHUR HOAGUE

SWANTON -- Joseph Arthur Hoague, 77, died Sunday, April 18, 2004, at the Brownway Residence in Enosburg Falls.

Born in Swanton, July 6, 1926, he was the son of the late Joseph and Almira (Pelkey) Hoague. He attended Swanton Schools and was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church.

He faithfully served his country in the United States Army during World War II and was honorably discharged on June 1, 1947. He has been a member of the American Legion, Green Mountain Post 1 of St. Albans and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 778 of Swanton.

He is survived by a son, Peter Hoague of Florida; and a sister, Rosanna Wescott of Grand Isle; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his six brothers, George, Alfred, Napoleon, Fred, Arthur, and Nelson and four sisters, Edna Williams, Helen Van Guilder, Marion Corwell and Elizabeth Phillips.

Graveside Services and interment with full military honors will take place Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the Hoague family lot in Riverside Cemetery. Father Donald Morris Rector of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton.

LEONA M. PHELPS

ST. ALBANS -- Leona M. Phelps, 94, passed away Thursday morning, April 22, 2004, in the Haven Health Care Facility, She was born in Georgia, Vt., Sept. 11, 1909, the daughter of the late Oscar and Florence (Conger) Unwin. Leona was married to William Wirt Phelps who predeceased her on June 12, 1981.

For many years, Leona was a unit secretary for the Porter Hospital in Middlebury. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, St. Albans Historical Society, Welden Chapter 79, Order of Eastern Star, Watchful Circle of the King's Daughters and the United Methodist Women. She was also a volunteer at the Franklin County Museum.

Except for 15 years spent in Bristol, Vt., Leona was a life-long resident of St. Albans. One of her legacies is "The Creme Stand" in Bristol, which she opened in 1956 and every year thereafter on Memorial Day and closed on Labor Day until she and her husband, Wirt, moved back to their hometown of St. Albans in 1971. Everyone knew summer had arrived in Bristol when Leona opened the Creme Stand. The stand is still open every summer in Bristol. Leona loved her church, St. Paul's Methodist, and rarely missed a service or an event. She was an active member of the Eastern Star and held many offices. She had many friends who traveled with her both near and far. She was a proud Vermonter and once remarked to her daughter-in-law as she crossed the border from New Hampshire into Vermont - "you can sure tell the difference when you are in Vermont." Leona loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and always knew what each one "was up to" and they will miss hearing her opinions.

Leona is survived by a son, Alan Phelps and his wife, Doris of Conroe, Texas; a daughter, Laurel Heinlein and her husband, Anthony of St. Albans; six grandchildren, Timothy and Lynne Heinlein of Bakersfield, Karen and Kenneth Grenier of Georgia, John and Kelley Heinlein of Highgate, Thomas Heinlein of Alaska, Rachelle and Travis Hill of Texas, and Warner and Cara Phelps of Texas; nine great-grandchildren, Granger, Montanna, Jeremy, and Katie Heinlein, Kyle, Rachel, and Dylan Grenier, and Aubree and Ashley Bovat; two brothers, Robert Unwin of St. Albans and William Unwin of Pennsylvania; a sister and her husband, Shirley and Normand Benoit of Florida; a special niece, Shirley Ryan of St. Albans; and several other nieces and nephews. Besides her husband Wirt, she was predeceased by a sister, Marjorie Remillard.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 26, 2004, at 2 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel, 87 South Main Street, with the Reverend Marcheta Townsend officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until the hour of the funeral. Interment will be in the family lot at Georgia Plain Cemetery.
