LEON ERNEST KEMPTON, SR.

SWANTON -- Leon Ernest Kempton, Sr., 59, a native of Newport, N.H. and a resident of the Swanton community since 1970, died peacefully early Friday morning, April 16, 2004, in the Northwestern Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Newport, N.H., Sept. 29, 1944, he was the son of the late Wilson Sylas Kempton II and Julia (Roy) Kempton. He attended schools in Goshen, N.H. and on Nov. 11, 1972, married the former Shelia Tuttle who survives him.

For 21 years Leon worked as a machine operator for Champlain Cable in Colchester until illness forced him to retire in 1998. He was a member of the Local 597 Teamsters Union and a former member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 1090 in St. Albans. In his earlier years he will be best remembered for his love of hunting and fishing, taking great pride in his home and for taking long Sunday rides with his family. More recently he enjoyed coloring with his granddaughter Erin Kempton, being surrounded by his family and talking baseball with his brother-in-law Michael Tuttle. Leon had a great sense of humor, loved to laugh and was always looking for a good joke. He was a very dedicated family man and a hard worker.

Besides his wife Sheila of Swanton Village Leon leaves four sons, Leon Kempton Jr. and his fiancee Michelle Behm of Swanton, Terry L. Kempton and his wife Connie of Swanton, Richard Kempton of Springfield, Vt. and Timothy Kempton of Atlanta, Ga.; two daughters, Tammy Hosner and her husband Todd of Barre and Leslie Noonan of Concord, N.H.; three brothers, Ronald Kempton and his wife Diane of Goshen, N.H., Charlie Kempton and his wife Ann of Claremont, N.H. and Sidney Menard and his wife Nancy of Sunapee, N.H.; two sisters, Henrietta Hodgeman and her husband Bruce of Goshen, N.H. and Helen Judd and her husband Albert of Claremont, N.H. Also surviving are his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Diane Kempton of Sanford, Maine, Michael and Darlene Tuttle of Swanton, William A. Tuttle of Swanton and Charlene Martinez of Anniston, AL; grandchildren, Joshua Kempton, Erin Kempton, Ayla Hosner, Dylan Kempton, Jaslyn Kempton, Richard Kempton and Crystal Kempton; and his special niece and goddaughter, Tiffany Tuttle; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousin and friends.

In addition to his parents Leon was predeceased by three brothers, Raymond and Rodney Kempton and Wilson Sylas Kempton III.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, April 20, 2004, at 10 a.m. from the Memorial United Methodist Church, Grand Avenue, Swanton Village. The Reverend Marcheta Townsend will officiate. There will be no public calling hours and interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Gifts in Leon's memory may be made to the American Lung Association of Vermont, 30 Farrell Street, South Burlington, Vt. 05403.

BRUCE E. BOLT

RICHFORD -- Bruce E. Bolt, age 52, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, April 17, 2004.

He was born in St. Albans on May 28, 1951, the son of the late Clair and Gladys (Lampman) Bolt.

Bruce's greatest love was his family and grandchildren. "Papa" was a loving husband, wonderful father, brother and grandfather. Most importantly, he was always their friend first and his love for his family and friends was unconditional. Bruce was a free spirit and enjoyed taking long rides in his prized '77 Corvette or on his motorcycle. He loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed fishing. Bruce worked as a construction worker and truck driver hauling junk cars. "Papa" was taken from us too soon and he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his wife Theresa (Manosh) Bolt of Richford, whom he married on Nov. 24, 1984; his daughter, Jennifer Martin and her husband Mitchell of Richford; a sister and her husband, Charlene and Frank Wagner of Richford; six grandchildren, Joshua, Jeremy, Brandon, Megan, Rebecca and Tiffany; a sister-in-law, Avis Anderson and her husband Bob of Bakersfield; two brothers-in-law, Leroy Manosh and Pete Combs of Richford; several nieces and nephews including, Sharon Combs, Carlton Combs Jr., Lorraine Combs and Sallie Royea and her husband Jeff all of Richford. He also leaves special friends Roger Deuso and Percy Capsey.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, April 21, 2004, at 7 p.m. at The Sommerset Inn on Depot Street in Enosburg Falls. Interment will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family at the South Richford Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to a trust fund established for the benefit of his grandchildren in care of Banknorth, P.O. Box 448, Enosburg Falls, Vt. 05450.

SHIRLEY M. BALLOU

SOUTH ROYALTON -- Shirley M. Ballou, 61, died Friday, April 16, 2004, at her home after a period of failing health. She was born Jan. 7, 1943, in Chelsea, Vt., the daughter of Marie (Brooks) and Harold Hayward, Sr.

She attended school in Chelsea, graduating in 1962 from Chelsea High School. On Sept. 7, 1963, she married James R. Ballou of South Royalton. They lived all their married life in South Royalton. She was the bookkeeper for her husband and father-in-law's business, Jim and Ray Ballou Painting and General Contracting. Shirley also worked for 12 years at South Royalton High School in the hot lunch program.

Shirley was a devoted mother, friend, wife and grandmother. She enjoyed crocheting, baking, walking and gardening. she also enjoyed attending and cheering at South Royalton sporting events. Her greatest love was her family and grandchildren. If you spent any time with her you could tell how proud she was and how much she loved her husband, kids and grandchildren. She enjoyed playing games and spending summers at the family camp in Friendship, Maine. She also enjoy riding back roads with Jim looking for deer and other wildlife. She also loved her dog Joey, and cat Sheba.

She is survived by her husband of South Royalton; a son, Michael J. Ballou of South Royalton; twin daughters, Kimberly A. Masaracchia of Fort Leavenworth, KS and Karmen A. Swim of St. Albans; seven grandchildren, David and Emily Ballou of South Royalton, Nicholas and Amanda Swim of St. Albans, Corey, Mathew and Alice Masaracchia of Fort Leavenworth, KS; and several brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will be held today, April 19, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home, Main Street, Chelsea, Vt. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 20, 2004 at 2 p.m. in the United Church of South Royalton with Reverend James Proctor officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the Hartland Lions Club, c/o Richard Ellis, Treas., P.O. Box 507, South Royalton, Vt. 05068, or South Royalton Rescue Squad, c/o Corrine Ingraham, 52 Roberts Road, South Royalton, Vt. 05068.

ETTA MAE LEMNAH

ST. ALBANS -- Mrs. Etta Mae Lemnah, 88, a Gold Star Mother and lifelong area resident, passed away Thursday evening, April 15, 2004, at Haven Health Care following a brief illness. She was born in Swanton on March 23, 1916, the daughter of the late Robert W. and Jane (Hatch) Erwin.

She was the widow of Clarence G. Lemnah who predeceased her on Aug. 24, 1988.

Besides being a Gold Star Mother, she was a member of Green Mtn. Post 1, American Legion Auxiliary and Bellevue Rebekah Lodge 26.

Survivors include her children, Robert A. Lemnah and his wife, Sandra of Burlington, Ronald C. Lemnah of Fairfax, Va., Fay H. Lemnah and his wife, Susan of Arlington, Va., and Harold G. Lemnah and his wife, Reba of St. Albans; her daughter-in-law, Marty Lemnah of St. Albans; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Hu and her husband, Stephen, Karen Bourdeau and her husband, Marc, Sheri Boylan and her husband, Steve, and Christopher Lemnah; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews and cousins. Besides her parents and husband Clarence, she was predeceased by a son, M/Sgt USMC Richard L. Lemnah in Beirut, Lebanon on Oct. 23, 1983; a daughter-in-law, Lucille Lemnah in 1986; two grandchildren, Jennifer Lemnah and Marc Lemnah; and two great-grandchildren, Ian and Emmett.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Holy Angels Catholic Church. Interment will be in the family lot at Holy Cross Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans.

Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorials to Haven Health Care Facility, Special Care Unit, 596 Sheldon Road, St. Albans, Vt. 05478 or Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, Vt. 05478 or the American Diabetes Association, Vermont Memorial Processing Center, P.O. ASHLEY MARIE EDSON

GEORGIA / SWANTON -- A Celebration of Life for Ashley Marie Edson who passed away April 7, 2004, was held Wednesday, April 14, 2004, at 11 a.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home. The Reverend Marcheta Townsend pastor of the Highgate and Rice Hill United Methodist Churches officiated.

Very heartfelt words of remembrance were shared by Ashley's dad, Keith Edson, her uncle Paul Woodward and a poem was read by her cousin Jill DeBrady.

Among the large delegations in attendance were representatives from the faculty, students and staff of Bellows Free Academy -- St. Albans, Essex Educational Center including the Junior ROTC Program, Georgia Elementary and Middle Schools and the University of Vermont. Also in attendance were representatives from, Showtime Video and Records of Georgia, The Burlington Free Press, The Buyers Digest, Crowley Construction, Boy Scouts of America Troop 42 of Georgia, Don G. Bell, Inc., Grand Avenue Enterprises, Cota's Route 105 Auto, Cota's Auto Parts, Gregory Supply, Interstate Auto Service, Franklin County Humane Society and the King Street Youth Center.

Interment followed in the Edson family lot in Riverside Cemetery with The Reverend Mrs. Townsend reading the committal prayers.

The Honorary Bearers were family friends Michael Hathaway and Gregory Wright. The Active Bearers were Ashley's uncles, Michael Barkyoumb, Brian Hilliker, Bruce Hilliker and Paul Woodward, as well as close friends, Bryan and Travis Hathaway.

It should be noted that the correct name of the Bellows Free Academy Newspaper is "The Mercury, " not The Comet as previously stated.

R. RICHARD MAYNARD

BAKERSFIELD -- R. Richard Maynard, age 92, passed away Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at the Haven Health Care Nursing Home in St. Albans.

He was born in Bakersfield on Jan. 2, 1912, the son of the late Frank and Martha (Davis) Maynard.

He was a life long resident of Bakersfield and a direct descendant of the original settlers of Bakersfield. He was a 1930 graduate of Vermont Agricultural School in Randolph. Following graduation he worked as an independent milk tester in northern Vermont for several years. He then became a dairy farmer working at several area farms eventually purchasing a farm in Bakersfield and retired from farming in 1968. He had also worked as a builder and handyman while farming which he continued to do into his 80's. He also enjoyed sugaring which he had done for nearly 70 years. At the age of 14 he was named the Franklin County Maple King.

He served as a selectman for the Town of Bakersfield for 20 years and had also served on the Cemetery Commission, and Board of Public Funds

He loved to garden and always had enough to give to his family. He was also cutting his own wood up to four years ago. He also enjoyed traveling with Eleanor and eating at different restaurants.

He was an avid snowmobiler having been the trailmaster for the Bakersfield Valley Drifters for many years.

He married Eleanor Pierce, Nov. 21, 1931; she predeceased him Oct. 6, 1987. He then married Eleanor Smith, Sept. 27, 1991, whom survives him.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Norma Benjamin of Franklin, Martha Hyne and her husband John of Bakersfield, Leon "Dicky" Maynard and his wife Shirley of Bakersfield, and Frank "Bill" Maynard and his wife Carole of Casadaga, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his first wife he was predeceased by a daughter, Marilyn Partridge; a great-great-grandson, Aidan Tower; two sisters, Frances Read, and Florence Pierce; and two brothers, Frank and William Maynard.

In keeping with Richard's wishes he was cremated and there will be no funeral services. Interment will be held at the Maple Grove Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

There will be visiting hours held Sunday, April 18, 2004, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.

JANE C. KELLY

RICHFORD -- Jane C. Kelly, age 79, passed away Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at the Vermont Respite House in Williston with her family at her side.

She was born April 5, 1925, in St. Albans the daughter of the late Herbert B. Comings Sr. and Theresa (Kittell) Comings

She was a life long resident of Richford and a member of All Saints Catholic Church. She was a 1943 graduate of Mount St. Mary's in Burlington and a 1947 graduate of the College of St. Elizabeth in New Jersey. She enjoyed quilting, needlework, painting and music. She was also an accomplished pianist.

She is survived by her children, Susan Morrissey and her husband Paul of Medford, Mass., Mary Kelly and her fiance Robert Reil of South Burlington, Peggy Tringale and her husband Steven of Reading, Mass., and Daniel T. Kelly and his wife Deborah of Georgia; her grandchildren, who were very special to her, Steven, Andrew and Christopher Tringale, Ellen and Ann Morrissey, Brian Bantel, and James Kelly; two sisters-in-law, Nancy Comings and Millie Percy both of Richford. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Edward D. Kelly, they were married July 2, 1949; three brothers, Herbert B. Comings Jr., John C. Comings, and Samuel K. Comings.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 16, 2004, at 11 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church in Richford with Reverend Frank Eksterowicz celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery in Richford.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday evening from 7 to 9 at the Spears Funeral Home, 140 Main St., Richford.

ADRIEN LANGEVIN

ST. JEAN-sur-RICHELIEU -- At St. Jean-sur-Richelieu on April 12, 2004, Adrien Langevin passed away at the age of 76. Adrien was the husband of Jeanne D'Arc Dupont.

He leaves his children, Luc, Jean (Sylvie Boulanger); his grandchildren, Melanie, Jade, Lydie; his brother, Sylva; his sisters, Murielle and Henriette; his brother-in-law, Rene Choquette; his sister-in-law, Anette Langevin; his nephews, nieces and many friends.

The family will receive the condolence on Friday, April 16, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m., and again on Saturday, April 17, starting at 9 a.m. The funeral will follow at St. Noel Chabanel Church. Centre funeraire Oligmy and Desrochers, 8826, 1er Street, Iberville.
