STEWART J. GASSON

ST. ALBANS -- Stewart J. Gasson, 91, a lifelong resident of this area, passed away Saturday evening, June 26, 2004, at the FAHC in Burlington following a brief illness. He was born in Huntington, Vt. Sept. 28, 1912, the son of the late William and Maude (Davis) Gasson. On Sept. 2, 1939, Stewart married Kathryn L. Touchette in Enosburg. She died Nov. 26, 1997.

Stewart owned and operated a dairy farm in St. Albans Town for many years, retiring in 1976. Prior to that, he was a printer in Provincetown, Mass. Following his retirement from farming, he served as custodian for St. Paul's United Methodist Church where he was a very active member. He also mowed the lawn for the St. Albans Free Library. His interests included reading, walking, and riding, years ago on his motorcycle, and more recently in his car. He also loved animals.

Stewart was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and the Phi Alpha Class of the church. He was a member of Franklin Lodge 4, F&AM where he served as Worshipful Master in 1949 and again 50 years later in 1999. He was currently serving as Secretary for the Council, Chapter and Commandry. He was a Past Patron for Welden Chapter 79, OES. He is also a Trustee and President of the St. Albans Bay Cemetery Association.

Survivors include his daughter, Janet Boisvert and her husband, Paul of Port Charlotte, Fla.; a sister, Mabel St. Cyr of Northfield, Vt.; two granddaughters, Laura Boyd and her husband, Bryan of Raleigh, N.C. and Mary Boisvert of Port Charlotte, Fla. and nieces and nephews. He will be missed by his numerous friends and his cat, "Cinnamon." In addition to his wife, Katheryn and his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Meda Aust.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel. The service will be conducted by the officers and members of Franklin Lodge 4, F&AM. Interment will follow in the family lot in St. Albans Bay Cemetery.

For those who wish, memorial contributions may be sent to Franklin Lodge 4, F& AM, P.O. Box 1147, St. Albans, Vt. 05478. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 1:30 p.m. until the time of the funeral at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St. Albans.

EARL J. BENWAY

ST. ALBANS TOWN -- Mr. Earl J. Benway, Sr., age 79, died Saturday morning, June 26, 2004, in the Northwestern Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born in Clarenceville, Quebec, May 4, 1925, the last surviving child of 24 children born to the late Charles and Delia (Bean) Benway.

In his younger years Earl worked as a farm hand and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943. He served with pride during World War II and was discharged honorably and faithfully on the 16 of March, 1946. He served in the Vermont Army National Guard and was discharged from the Enosburg Falls Unit Nov. 16, 1954. Earl was an independent contractor, mostly in janitorial services, with General Electric, the New England Telephone Co. and most recently with Total Home Store.

Earl was happy gardening, trapping, fishing, hunting or even a little slight of the hand with playing cards. He proudly celebrated 42 years of sobriety. He was one of the life members of the Harbor Club, a member of the American Legion Post 1 and the Vermont Trappers Association.

He married Inez Robtoy and raised seven children. Inez died Nov. 18, 1986.

He is survived by his six children and their spouses, Debbie and Roger Walker of South Carolina, Earl Jr. "Jack" and Carol Benway of Highgate, Ruth McBride and her fiance Tim Keevan of Swanton, Rene Benway, Ula and Thomas Sturgeon, Ernie and Pauline Benway, all of St. Albans Town; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandson; many nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he was predeceased by his 23 siblings; and his daughter, Linda Bredberg, tragically on Feb. 6, 1988.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Brady & Levesque Chapel. Friends may call at the funeral home, 86 South Main St., from 7 to 9 this evening (Monday). Interment will follow, with full military honors, in the Benway family lot in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Harbor Club, 34 Kingman St., St. Albans, Vt. 05478.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

SHEILA ANN FEELEY DAVIES

FORT MILL, S.C. -- Mrs. Sheila Ann Feeley Davies, 59, of 1005 Country Acres Drive, Fort Mill, passed away Saturday, June 26, 2004, at her home.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 29, in St. John's United Methodist Church in Fort Mill with the Rev. John Warren Jr. and Dr. Robert Monson officiating.

Born Aug. 3, 1944, in St. Albans, Vt., Mrs. Davies was the daughter of the late Avery Leonard Feeley and Beulah Genivive Farrar. Mrs. Davies taught remedial reading and math in the elementary schools in Vermont for many years and also tutored children. She was a member of the Fort Mill Lions Club. She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church and was a member of the United Methodist women. She helped with Wonderful Wednesdays and various Sunday school classes. She was a former den leader for the Cub Scouts, a Hospital Gray Lady and a Youth Diversion Counselor. She enjoyed canoeing, camping, farming, gardening and canning vegetables.

Surviving are her husband, William Davies; two sons, Daniel Davies and his wife, Lorrie-Ann of Highgate Center, Vt., and Brian Davies and his wife, Ellen of Attleboro, Mass.; her daughter, Dorothy Scott and her fiance, David Hughes of Glover, Vt.; her brother, John Feeley and his wife, Barbara Ryder of Waitsfield, Vt.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends following the memorial service in St. John's United Methodist Church.

DAVID A. SWEET

SR.ST. ALBANS — David A. Sweet, Sr., 41, died unexpectedly on Thursday, June 24, 2004, at his home. He was born in St. Albans March 27, 1963, the son of Robert and Gloria (Church) Sweet. On July 2, 1983, he married Lisa Bushey in Sheldon.

David graduated from Bellows Free Academy in 1982 and served in the U. S. Army from 1982 to 1987. He was employed at Solo (formerly Fonda Container). He enjoyed woodworking and auto mechanics. David is survived by his wife, Lisa; three sons, David, Jr., Joseph and Joshua, all of St. Albans; his parents, Robert and Gloria Sweet of Sheldon; three sisters; Laura Wagner and her husband, Bobby, Amy Sweet and her friend Jeff LeClair, and Stacy and her husband, Roland Sweet; two brothers, Robby Sweet and Ricky and his wife, Hope Sweet; his grandfather, Alan Church of St. Albans; and many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. He also leaves his mother-in-law, Dorcas Bushey of Sheldon, sisters-in-law Morleen Bourbeau, Donna Hansen, Ann-Marie Parizo and her husband, Chris, and Tammy Merchant and her husband, Travis, and brothers-in-law Joseph Bushey, David Bushey and his wife, Lisa, and Steven Bushey. He was predeceased by his twin brother, Daniel Sweet, in August of 1988 and his grandmother, Henrietta Sweet, in October of 2003. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel. Interment with full military honors will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans.

ALMA M.L. JUAIRERICHFORD

Alma M. L. Juaire, age 91, passed away Friday, June 25, 2004, at Our Lady of the Meadows in Richford. She was born March 23, 1913, in St. Isidore de Prescott, Ontario, the daughter of the late Joseph and Emma (Lauzon) Pilon. She was a resident of Richford most of her life and was an active member of All Saints Catholic Church and a member of the Ladies of St. Ann Society. She married Armand Juaire on June 29, 1940, in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fairfield. Alma was noted for her quilt making. She is survived by four daughters and their husbands, Ella and Richard Stolarczyk of Shelburne, Elaine and Robert Glaser of Salem, N.H., Eleanor and Dr. Richard Fiedler of Elgin, Ill., Theresa and James Jewett of Churubusco, N.Y., and Jay, Vt.; 11 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; a special sister-in-law, Henrietta Douglas; several nieces and nephews; her half brothers, Edward Pilon of St. Albans, Arthur Pilon of Fairfield, and Joseph Pilon Jr. of Swanton; her half sisters, Josephine Rocheleau of St. Albans, Cecile Minkler of Swanton, and Yvonne Smith of Nebraska. She was predeceased by her husband, Armand Juaire, on March 15, 1989; and three brothers, Emile, Henry and Arthur Pilon. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday June 28, at 2 p.m. at All Saints Catholic Church in Richford. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. A time of visitation will be held Monday June 28, from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m., at the Spears Funeral Home, 140 Main St., Richford. For those who wish, contributions in her memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association Vermont Chapter, 10 Ferry St., Suite 427B, Concord, N.H. 03301-5004. In appreciation, a special thank you to Our Lady of the Meadows staff for their wonderful care and thoughtfulness during the last years of Alma’s life.

ROMEO T. POTVIN

NORWALK, Conn./MONTGOMERY, Vt. - Romeo T. Potvin, age 78, of Norwalk, Conn., died Thursday, June 23, 2004, at the New Milford Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was the husband of the late Viola Latimer Potvin, whom he wed July 3, 1948, in Enosburg Falls, Vt., and who predeceased him on December 30, 1999. Mr. Potvin was born in Montgomery, Vt., July 28, 1925, son of the late Joseph and Lillian Touchette Potvin, and had resided in Norwalk, Conn., for over 40 years. He was a proud veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy, and retired in 1991 from Perkin Elmer, where he had worked for 28 years. Mr. Potvin assisted Michael Fast with the Henry Abbott Technical School Bowling Club, was a member and usher of St. Ladislaus Church in Norwalk, and while at Perkin Elmer he sang in many of their variety shows. He enjoyed his cats, photography and traveling and was always ready with a joke or trivia. Survivors include a brother Louis Potvin of Essex Junction, Vt., a brother-in-law Raymond Latimer of Enosburg Falls, Vt., a sister-in-law Dorothy Ledoux of Florida, nieces and nephews Albert Perry of Richford, Vt., Sandi Merz of Brattleboro, Vt., Patricia O'Dell of Enosburg Falls, Vt., Carolyn Moore of Vernon, Vt., Norman Potvin of Dracute, Mass., Richard Latimer of Burlington, Vt., James Potvin of Brooklyn, Conn., Michael Potvin of Hinesburg, Vt., Janet Smith of Waitsfield, Vt., Monica Yeamans of Holland, Vt., Linda Rowden of Burlington, Vt., Marshia King of New Milford, Conn., Thomas Potvin of Ludlow, Vt., Debbie Gaboriault of S.C., Barbara Fast of Kent, Conn., David Potvin of Vernon, Vt., Nancy Danaher of Waitsfield, Vt., several other nieces and nephews and many cousins. He also leaves behind many bowling and bingo friends and all his friends at Jimmies Diner. Mr. Potvin was predeceased by five brothers, Francis, Ernest, Leo, Carmi and A. Charles Potvin, two sisters, Marie Perry and Louise Greene, two nephews, Reginald Latimer and Bobby Greene, a niece, Beverly Crary and a grand niece, Bridget Potvin. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, June 28, 11:00 a.m. at St. Isidore's Catholic Church in Montgomery Center with Rev. Frank Eksterowicz celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in St. Isidore's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held Sunday from 3-6 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls. ROSE A. (STANNARD) MASKELL

ALBURG / GEORGIA Vt. -- Rose A. (Stannard) Maskell died June 21, 2004, after a short illness.

Born in Burlington, Vt., on March 12, 1933, to the late John and Rose Stannard. Rose married Roy R. Maskell on June 30, 1950.

She is survived by her loving husband Roy; daughter Mary Blow and husband George of Newport News, Va., daughter Donna Dunkley and husband James of Cascade, Colo., son Roy and wife Josephine of Fairfax, Vt.; grandchildren Allan Blow and wife Janet and stepson Alex Blose, Jay Dunkley, Alyssa Dunkley, and Alex Maskell; brothers, John Stannard of Florida, Peter Stannard of Nashua, N.H., Robert Stannard of Essex Jct., Vt. and Anthony (Tony) Stannard of Burlington, Vt.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Rose was a longtime resident of Alburg and Georgia. Most recently Rose worked as a cook at the Northern Café in Alburg. Rose loved doing crafts and showed her work at various craft fairs over the years. Most importantly Rose was a devoted housewife and mother.

Visitation will be private followed by a graveside service and interment on Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. from the Maskell family lot in St. Mary's Cemetery, 65 Canada Street, Swanton.

Gifts in Rose's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society. Vermont Division Inc., 11 Loomis Street, Montpelier, Vt. 05602-3021.

HOWARD A. BROUILLETTE

ST. ALBANS -- Howard (Spike) Arthur Brouillette, 79, of Messenger Street, died surrounded by his loving family on June 22, 2004, at Northwestern Medical Center after a brief illness.

He was born Dec. 31, 1924 in St. Albans, son of the late Arthur and Rose (Bovat) Brouillette. He attended BFA-St. Albans and enlisted in the Military service in 1943. He was a member of the Army’s 75th Division, 289 Infantry Regiment. During World War II he fought in the European Theater, the Battle of the Bulge, received the Bronze Star, among many metals, and was honorably discharged in 1946.

After the war he married Cecilia Jarvis of St. Albans on Nov. 4, 1946. He was proud to proclaim that he was a toolmaker for Union Carbide Corporation for 38 years before retiring. He was an avid golfer and was a member of the Champlain Valley Country Club for many decades. He enjoyed watching basketball and was the manager for the BFA basketball team before he left for the Army. He also loved to play the card game “500." He taught his whole family to play the game and many happy hours were spent at home and on family vacations at Cape Cod, Mass. playing the game.

The joy of Howard’s life came from the time spent with his family. He made countless sacrifices for their benefit. Besides his wife Cecilia of 57 years, Howard is survived by his five children, Dr. Linda Brouillette of Sagamore Beach, Mass., James Brouillette and his wife Susan of Georgia, Vt., Judith Robinson and her husband Jay of Burlington, Vt., Donald Brouillette and his wife Charlene of Georgia, Vt., and Donna Boudreau and her husband David of Georgia, Vt. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren Bradley, Laura, Lisa, Kayla, Jess, Emily, Drew, Natalie, Andrea, Justin, Brent and Hilary; and eight great-grandchildren. He also leaves an older brother Adrian (Mooney) Brouillette and his wife Janis of Naugatuck, Conn., and two sisters, Mary Bissonette and her husband Donald of St. Albans, and Elizabeth Gadouas and her husband Leo of Florida and St. Albans Bay.

In reflecting on his life, Howard often proudly stated “ I have served my God, my family and my country to the best of my ability.” Now he has gone home to be with his God, but he will be deeply missed.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, June 25, 2004, at 11 a.m. in Holy Angels Church. Interment will follow in the Brouillette family lot in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main Street, St. Albans, from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 13 Loomis St., Montpelier, Vt. 05602.

STANLEY C. PHILLIPS

WESTFORD / TIMMONSVILLE, S.C. -- Stanley Cole Phillips, 71, passed away June 20, 2004, at his home in Timmonsville, S.C. He was born in Quincy, Mass. on March 13, 1933, son of the late Francis and Marion (Cole) Phillips. He moved with his family to Fairfax, Vt. in 1948. He was a resident of Fletcher until 2003 when he moved to Timmonsville, S.C. He attended St. Johnsbury Trade School, St. Johnsbury, and Wentworth Institute in Massachusetts. He was a master carpenter by trade.

He leaves two sons, Bradford of Milton, Christopher of Florence, S.C.; a brother, William and his wife Frena of Westford; three nephews, Charles and his wife France, Allen Phillips, and Scot and his wife Kimberlee; and several grand nieces and nephews.

There will be no visiting hours. A graveside memorial service with inurnment will be held on Friday, June 25, 2004, at 11 a.m. in Pleasant View Cemetery in Westford with Reverend Elizabeth Griffin officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made in Stanley's memory to Feed The Children, P.O. Box 36, Oklahoma, OK 73101, or Samaritans Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, N.C. 28607, or the charity of one's choice.

RANDALL L. BUSHEY

MILTON -- Randall L. Bushey, 81 of River St., died Sunday, June 20, 2004, in the Fletcher Allen Health Care Facility in Burlington following a long illness.

Randall was born Dec. 3, 1922, in Milton, the son of the late Burton L. and Grace Randall Bushey.

On Nov. 16, 1944 he was married to Eleanor Giffin in Milton.

A dairy farmer his whole life, he and his brother Berg owned and operated Bushey Brother's Valley Crest Farms throughout Chittenden County. During the 50s and 60s they won many agricultural awards in particular the Summer and Winter Green Pastures Award for successful farming. They were known worldwide for their registered Holsteins.

Randall enjoyed bowling, hunting and fishing, playing cards, horseshoes and softball as well as boating. In his later years he served on the council for the Milton Senior Citizens Meals Program.

He is survived by his wife Eleanor of Milton; and his four daughters, Sue Messina and her husband Rick of Cape Coral, Fla., Sally Bushey of Milton, Sandy LeBeau and her husband Don of Colchester and Marilyn Provencher and her friend Randy of St. Albans; his grandchildren, Randall and Dean LeBeau and Corey and Kristy Barrows; six great-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren; his two brothers, Linwood "Berg" Bushey of Essex and Glendon Bushey of Florida; as well as his brother-in-law Clifford Giffin and his wife Shirley of Rutland. He leaves many nieces and nephews.

A special thanks goes to the nursing staff at Fletcher Allen Health Care, McClure Unit as well as the Visiting Nurse Association and the Milton Rescue Squad.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, June 25, 2004, at 1 p.m. in the United Church of Milton with the Reverend Jeff Cornwell officiating. Burial will follow in the Milton Village Cemetery.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Milton Village Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund in care of George Nelson, 20 Baker Lane, Milton, Vt. 05468.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, June 24, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home, Route 7, Milton.
