LAWRENCE COVEY

MILTON -- Lawrence Covey, 91, has completed his faithful journey on earth and passed into everlasting rest. He died of cancer on Monday, June 21, 2004, at the Vermont Respite House in Williston.

He was born on the family farm in Perth, N.Y. on Feb. 6, 1913, the sixth of seven children to Anna (Reid) and Roland Covey.

A long-time resident of St. Albans, Larry first worked at the Golden Crust Bakery and later H.P. Hoods Creamery. He was a faithful church member and in his earlier years an assistant scoutmaster and a member of the Knights of Columbus in the parish of the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Larry was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous since January 1968, and a founding board member of the Franklin County Alcoholics Recovery program. Later, having been widowed twice, he moved to Burlington and became involved with Burlington Senior Center where he met his third wife, Pearl. Most recently, he was a council member for the Milton Senior Center and Milton Community Meals.

He is predeceased by his first two wives, Alvina Trudell Covey and Gladys LeClair Covey. He is survived by his third wife Pearl Whitney Covey; a sister Patricia Cole of Pittsford, N.Y.; and a brother Edward Covey of Santa Maria, Calif. Surviving children and spouses are: Joel and Evelyn Covey of Madison, Wis.; James and Claire Covey of Schenectady, N.Y.; Chris and Cathy Covey of Alburg; and Geri and Earl Cunningham of Highlands Ranch, Colo. Surviving step-children and spouses are: Lawrence LeClair of Tucson, Ariz.; George and Diane Whitney of Middlebury; Shirley and Steve Mullis of Milton; Joyce Trainque of Burlington; Larry and Betsy Whitney of Milton; Barbara and Robert Merchant of Burlington; Marjory and Michael Burt of Georgia; and Frances Whitney of Milton. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at 10 a.m. in St. Ann's Catholic Church in Milton. Burial will follow in the Holy Cross Cemetery in St. Albans. Visiting hours will be held today, June 22, 2004, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton.

The family wishes to thank the dedicated staff and volunteers of the Vermont Respite House and the Visiting Nurses Association for their care and compassion, and Barbara Joachim, Milton Senior Center advocate.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent in Larry's name to the Milton Senior Community Meals Program, c/o The Champlain Valley Agency on Aging, P.O. Box 158, Winooski, Vt. 05404.

MICHAEL J. BARBER

CORNISH, N.H. -- Michael J. Barber, 60, of Cornish, died suddenly at his home on Sunday. He was born on Jan. 3, 1944 in St. Albans, Vt. a son of Donald and Thelma (Bray) Barber.

He grew up in Vermont and graduated from Bellows Free Academy and later received a degree in Electrical Engineering from Vermont Technical College in Randolph. In 1964 he was married to Donna Durphey. He was employed by Cone Blanchard in Windsor, Kollmorgan in Keene, and most recently by Rockwell in Lebanon. He was married to Patricia Laro in 1979 and they made their home in Cornish. Aside from being a devoted husband, father, son and grandfather, Mike’s passion in his spare time was his horses and his dogs. He loved to spend hours in the saddle, trail riding, exploring trails, and enjoying the beauty around him. His kind and loving nature with his animals was to be admired.

He was a founding member of the Hartland Riding Club and served as President for many years. He received many awards over the years for his horses, riding, and competitive trail rides and drives. He was a member of the Vermont Riding and Driving Association, Green Mountain Horse Association, Morgan Horse Association, and will be sadly missed by his friends in the horse community. He was also a member of the Hartland and Cornish Volunteer Fire Departments, a past member of the Hartland School Board, and served as the announcer for the 4-H Club’s horse show at the Cornish Fair.

He is survived by his father, Donald Barber of St. Albans, Vt.; his wife Patricia Barber of Cornish; two sons Jamie Barber of Hartland and Tom Barber of Cornish; two stepchildren Michele Levesque of Claremont and Paul Levesque of Cornish; four grandchildren; a sister Mary Yandow of St. Albans, Vt.; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Ricker Funeral Home in Lebanon on Wednesday evening from 7 to 9. A memorial mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church in Lebanon. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the New England Large Animal Institute, 1847 Trebo Road, Chester, Vt. 05143.

ROBERT W. GORDON

MILTON -- Robert W. Gordon, 63, died Saturday evening, June 19, 2004, at his home following a courageous battle with cancer with his loving family by his side.

Robert was born in Burlington on Dec. 16, 1940, the son of Joseph and Aline (Martell) Gordon. He graduated from Milton High School and was a dairy farmer for 40 years.

In addition to farming, he spent many years selling building materials from his home. He also worked for ABC Sales in Milton for over 10 years.

On March 3, 1962, Robert married Jerilyn Bluto in St. Ann's Catholic Church in Milton.

Together they raised their daughters Vicki, Leanne and Torrie. Robert was a very successful deer hunter and he and Jerilyn enjoyed many summers camping with the Good Sam Club with their motor home.

Robert was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

In addition to Jerilyn, he is survived by his daughters and families, Vicki Parrella and her husband Al and granddaughter Alicia, all of Milton; Leanne Miles and her husband Tony Sr. and grandchildren Geoffrey, Anthony Jr., Austin and Katelyn, all of Fletcher; and Torrie Latimer and her husband Jamie and grandchildren Evan and Emma all of Fairfax, by Robert's brothers and sisters Gloria LaFountain of Essex, Shirley Reynolds of Milton, Arlene Lauziere of Milton, Leland Gordon and his wife Pauline of Jeffersonville, and Clifton Gordon and his wife Joyce of Milton. He was predeceased by his sister, Phyllis Pidgeon, and his brothers, Vernon and Carl in infancy, by brothers-in-law Stanley Reynolds Sr., Edward LaFountain Sr., Roger Lauziere Sr., and Reg Pidgeon Sr. and by two brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at 10 a.m. in St. Ann's Catholic Church in Milton. Burial will follow in St. Ann's Cemetery.

Contributions in Robert's memory may be made to the Hospice of the Champlain Valley, 1110 Prim Road, Colchester, Vt. 05446.

Visiting hours will held today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton.

GEORGE H. KAVCHAK JR.

ENOSBURG -- George H. Kavchak Jr., age 64, passed away Friday, June 18, 2004, at his home.

He was born April 4, 1940, in Woodbridge, N.J., the son of George and Catherine (Quinlin) Kavchak.

George was a resident of Enosburg for the past 10 years and was a former resident of Lakewood, N.J. and had owned and operated Lincoln Heating & Cooling for the past 20 years. George was a gentlemen farmer and loved animals. He enjoyed raising chickens and sheep. He could always be counted on to lend a helping hand whenever needed and will be remembered by his motto "not to worry."

He is survived by his wife, Jean (Duncan) Kavchak of Enosburg; four daughters and their spouses, Tammara and Jim Conine of New Kingston, N.Y., Tracy and David Albrech of Berlin, Md., Lorlei and Scott Mount of Freehold, N.J., and Arlene and Kenneth Philipson of Howell, N.J.; three sons, John Helwig of Andover, N.J., Daniel Helwig and his wife Joanne of Brick, N.J., and Bryan Helwig of Enosburg; his parents, George and Catherine Kavchak of Enosburg; two sisters, Barbara Schoen and her significant other, Rob Jahngen of Milton, and Kathy Swallick of Enosburg; a brother by love, John Standowski and his wife Mary of Jackson, N.J.; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Robert Swallick.

In keeping with George's wishes he will be cremated. Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Visiting hours will be held Friday, June 25, 2004, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls. For those who wish, contributions in his memory may be made to the Franklin County Home Health Agency - Hospice Program, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.

MARION B. LAVERY

EAST BERKSHIRE -- Marion B. Lavery, age 87, passed away Friday, June 18, 2004, at the Franklin County Rehab Center in St. Albans surrounded by her loving family.

She was born April 30, 1917, in Richford, the daughter of the late Frank and Edith (Guyette) Bruso.

Marion was a 1935 Graduate of Richford High School and a member of All Saints Catholic Church in Richford. She was employed as an assistant librarian at the Berkshire Elementary School and worked at the State of Vermont information booth in East Berkshire. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, going for rides and taking trips to Maine. Most of all she loved her grandchildren. She was a woman of great love, patience and faith in God.

She is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Judith and James Smith of St. Albans, and Jane and Jerry Brigham of Bakersfield; eight grandchildren, Christopher Smith and his wife Heather, Michael, Jennifer Smith and her fiancé, David Henry, Stephen Smith, and Sarah Bapp and her husband Chris all of St. Albans, Jessica Brigham of Plymouth, N.H., Jason Brigham and his wife Diane of Jefferson, N.H., and Jonathan Brigham of Bakersfield; three great-grandchildren, Caleb and Zachary Smith, and Emma Bapp; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Lagrow of St. Albans, and Lou Lavery of Richford; several nieces and a nephew; and a close friend, Martha Smith of Enosburg Falls. She was predeceased by her husband and soul mate of 63 years, Gerald R. Lavery on March 6, 2004; and two brothers, Lawrence and Lorne "Joe" Bruso.

Funeral services were held today, June 21, 2004, at 11 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church in Richford with Reverend Frank Eksterowicz celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment followed in All Saints Cemetery in Richford.

Visiting hours were held Sunday, June 20, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.

For those who wish, contributions in her memory may be made to the Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, Vt. 05478 or to the Enosburgh Ambulance Service, 83 Sampsonville Rd., Enosburg Falls, Vt. 05450.

Marion's family wishes to thank the home care givers at Franklin County Home Health Agency and the staff at Franklin County Rehab Center for their wonderful care given to Marion during her illness.

ROBERT E. PROVASI, SR.

BARRE TOWN -- Robert E. Provasi, Sr., 62, of Lague Lane, passed away unexpectedly Friday, June 18, 2004, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

Born in Barre on Feb. 16, 1942, he was the son of Aldo and Grace (Pittsley) Provasi

He attended Barre City Schools and was a graduate of Spaulding High School, Class of 1960.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1960 until 1964. After the service, he returned to Barre where he was employed at Sprague Electric, where he met his wife, Sharon Dillon, who were married on Feb. 20, 1965, in St. Monica Catholic Church in Barre.

After their marriage the family moved to Fairfield, where he was employed by the Grand Union as a meat cutter for 16 years. He later became the owner and propriety of "Bob's Meat Market" in St. Albans.

In 1996 Robert and Sharon returned to Barre where he was employed, for a short time, at Ethan Allen Furniture. He later opened and operated a convenient store, "Bob's Store" on South Main Street in Barre.

Robert enjoyed hunting, fishing, but had a true passion for the fine craftsmanship of wood working. He enjoyed special times at their camp on Fairfield Pond with his family and friends.

He was a member of the American Legion, Post 1 of St. Albans.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Provasi of 39 years of marriage, of Barre; his children, Billie Jo St. Amour and her husband Richard of Burlington; Bobbie Jo Salls and her husband Steve of Swanton; Robert Provasi Jr. and his special friend Julie West of Fairfield; Cindy Breault and her husband Chuck of Richford; Tammy Gaudette of Sheldon; Vicki Dodd and her husband John of Franklin; his mother, Grace (Provasi) Savard of Barre; 10 grandchildren, Carlee St. Amour, Haley Churchill, Riley and Kelli Salls, Paige and Joshua Provasi, Adam Breault, Ashley and Jared Gaudette and Jack Dodd. He is also survived by one brother, Donald Provasi, of Florida; one sister, Linda Provasi of Barre; aunts, uncles, several nieces and nephews, and lots of loving friends and co-workers and his dog, "Me Boy, " Chester D.

He was predeceased by his father, Aldo Provasi; and his step-father, Armand Savard.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at 11 a.m. in St. Monica Catholic Church in Barre. There are no calling hours. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery in Barre.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 77 Hegeman Ave., Colchester, Vt. 05446.

Arrangements are in the care of the Pruneau-Polli Funeral Home, 58 Summer St., Barre.

CARLTON LEMNAH

Committal services for Carlton Lemnah will be held on Saturday, June 26, at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Fairfield at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Joseph Sullivan officiating with full military honors.

Arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Homes, locally family owned and operated.

L. PHYLLIS WARD

SHELDON -- Mrs. L. Phyllis Ward, age 86, died at Fletcher Allen Health Care, June 17, 2004. She was born Oct. 5, 1917, in St. Albans, the daughter of the late Louis and Mildred Menard. On Oct. 28, 1933 she married Harold Ward who predeceased her in 1994. She is survived by her sons Donald and his wife Christine Ward, and Howard Ward of Sheldon Springs; and her daughter Frances Begnoche-Boucher and her husband Stephen Boucher of Jericho; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; one sister and one sister-in-law. She was predeceased by two sons, Allen and Carleton Ward; a grandson and great-grandson; also two sisters and one brother. Her son-in-law, Maurice Begnoche, also predeceased her.

Phyllis was always ready and willing to help anyone who needed her. She opened her house for her grandmother and her parents in their final years caring for them until their deaths. She also was her husband's caretaker for several years after he suffered a debilitating stroke.

Phyllis took in boarders in the late 40s and early 50s who worked at the pulp mill in Sheldon Springs. She owned and operated, with her husband, a convenience store for several years. Her love of animals led to a time of raising cocker spaniels. She had several significant pets including Sammy, Charlie, and her favorite cat, Sheba.

She always worried about everyone in her family, paying little attention to her own needs. Her caring nature and indomitable spirit will be truly missed by all.

Funeral Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Brady & Levesque Chapel. Friends may call at the funeral home, 86 South Main St., St. Albans, from 7 to 9 Saturday evening. Interment will follow the funeral in the Ward/Bombard family lot in Greenwood Cemetery in St. Albans.
