FENWICK J. REED

NORTH KINGSTON, R.I. -- Fenwick J. Reed, 83, of North Kingstown, R.I., a retired Navy Chief, died Sunday at home. He was the husband of Eunice (Gifford) Reed, they have been married for 58 years.

Born in Sheldon Junction, Vt., a son of the late Francis L. and Ferne (Johnson) Reed, he was a resident of North Kingstown for 40 years. At the age of 12 his family moved to Providence, R.I. He entered the Navy in 1939 and was stationed at various stations, he retired in North Kingstown in 1964. During his 20 year Naval career he served aboard the Fred T. Barry and the USS Umpqua along with numerous LST's. A decorated World War II war veteran, he participated in the European Theatre invasion of Italy in Sicily and Salerno Bay, the Pacific Theatre of the Philippine Liberation, and the Korean War. When he retired from the Navy he worked as a Boiler Operator for Electric Boat both in Groton, Conn. and Quonset Point and for the Ladd Center in the Power House. As a member of the VFW and Navy Fleet Reserve he continued to support the military. He enjoyed fishing and gardening. He was known as the "Honorary Mayor of Slocum."

Besides his wife he leaves a son, Alan Reed of North Kingstown; five daughters, Candace Greene, Linda Murphy, and Suzanne Reed all of North Kingstown, Amy Stedman of Charlestown, R.I., and Pamela Merritt of Coventry, R.I.; 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Winthrop Reed.

The Funeral will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Fagan Funeral Home, 825 Boston Neck Road, North Kingstown. Burial with Military Honors will be in RI Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter, R.I.

Fagan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

NINA CANNATA

ASTORIA, N.Y. / GEORGIA -- Nina Cannata passed away on June 9, 2004, in New York following a brief illness. She was a devoted and loving sister, aunt and Godmother. Nina will be dearly missed by her extended family and friends.

She is survived by her loving nieces and nephew of Florida; her special niece, Trudy Gilmond of Georgia; her special nephew, Gary Gilmond, Jr. and his wife Jean and their children Gary III and Katie, all of Georgia; her God son, Mark Gilmond of Georgia; her foster sister, Olive Gilmond of Georgia; and her extended family and friends. She was predeceased by her brothers, James and John; and her sister, Carmella.

There are no local visiting hours. A graveside committal service will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 18, 2004, in Sanderson Corners Cemetery, Fairfax with Reverend Francis E. Connors officiating.

Local arrangements are by Hayes-Rich Funeral Home, 1176 Main St., Fairfax, Vt.

ARDELL E. McALLISTER

RICHFORD -- Ardell E. McAllister, age 75, passed away Friday, June 11, 2004, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

She was born Oct. 27, 1928 in Richford the daughter of the late Joseph and Virginia (Fountain) Guilmette.

Ardell was a life long resident of Richford and had been employed at the Northland Hockey Stick Factory, Howard "Buzzy" Leach Farm in Enosburg Falls, Franklin County Home Health Agency and provided home care service for the elderly in the area. She enjoyed playing BINGO and had a great love for animals.

She is survived by her husband, Ivan McAllister of Enosburg Falls; three children, Carroll McAllister and his wife Dorcas, and Randy McAllister and his wife Jan all of Richford, and Marcella Lawyer of Franklin; her grandchildren, Amber, Keshia, Adrianne, Silas, Simon, and Jeffrey; a great-granddaughter, Makaylah; her sister, Barbara Whitney of Richford; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, John, Merlin, Delbert, Llewelyn Guilmette; her sisters, Eleanor, Henrietta, and Fern Guilmette, Josie Nutting, Leona Eldridge, Helen Morgan, and Margaret Breault.

In keeping with Ardell's wishes she will be cremated and a graveside memorial service will be held Saturday, June 19, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the Richford Center Cemetery with Pastor Patrick Hoadley officiating. There will be no visiting hours.

DORCAS L CAVAZOS

SWANTON, Vt. / CUBA, N.Y. -- Dorcas L. Cavazos, 75, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, a native of Swanton, Vt. and more recently of Cuba, N.Y. died Wednesday evening, June 9, 2004, in the Cuba Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born in Swanton, Nov. 21, 1928, she was the daughter of the late John Z. and Alma (Barratt) Leavitt. She was a graduate of the former Swanton High School and on June 16, 1955, married Francisco G. "Frank" Cavazos who survives her.

In earlier years Dorcas worked as a medical secretary for Dr. Sample and later as an administrative clerk for the United States Air Force stationed at Fort Ethan Allen in Colchester. She also spent 18 years as assistant to the librarian at Missisquoi Valley Union High School.

Besides her husband Frank of 49 years, Dorcas also leaves two sons, Robert G. Cavazos of Williston and John M. Cavazos of Tampa, Fla.; and one daughter, Cathy Wells and her husband Mansel of Cuba, N.Y. Also surviving is her sister, Shirley Wall and her husband Larry of Swanton; five grandchildren (John Mark Wells, Nathanael Wells, Andrew Wells, Aaron Cavazos and Laura Cavazos); one niece (Melissa Wagner); and one nephew (Michael Wall).

Funeral Services will be held Sunday, June 13, 2004, at 1 p.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton. Dorcas' son-in-law, The Reverend Mansel Wells, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Cavazos family lot in Riverside Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday evening, June 12, 2004, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Gifts in Dorcas' memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 338 River Street, Montpelier, Vt. 05602.

EARL CLIFTON MACHIA

SHELDON / EAST HIGHGATE -- Earl Clifton Machia, 62, a lifelong resident of the Sheldon and Highgate communities, died early Wednesday morning, June 9, 2004, in his residence on the Machia Road.

Born in Sheldon, May 30, 1942, he was the son of the late Donald and Doris (Corwell) Machia.

Earl leaves three sons and their wives, Earl and Elizabeth Machia of Highgate, Kevin and Melissa Machia of St. Albans and Jamie and Darci Machia of Highgate; two brothers, Thornton Machia of East Highgate and Donald Machia of Troy, N.Y.; six sisters, Beverly Desorcie and her husband Marcel of St. Albans, Lorraine Plouffe and her husband George of St. Albans, Priscilla White and her husband John of Fairfield, Eleanor Snedecor and her husband Clyde of Cohoes, N.Y., Sandra White of Sheldon, and Diane Vautin and her husband George also of Cohoes, N.Y.; six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A brother, Wendell Machia predeceased him April 24, 1990.

Graveside Funeral Service and interment will be held Saturday, June 12, 2004, at 3 p.m. from St. Louis Cemetery, Lamkin Street, Highgate Center. Father John J. Meagher, SSE will officiate. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton this evening (Friday), June 11, 2004, from 7 to 9 p.m.

DAVID L. GOKEY

BAKERSFIELD -- David L. Gokey, age 56, passed away Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

David was born Dec. 27, 1947, in East Bakersfield, the son of Joyce (Snide) Gokey and the late Lincoln Gokey.

David was a resident of Bakersfield most of his life and was employed at Union Carbide (Ralston Purina) for 16 years until poor health forced him to retire. He was a U.S. Army Veteran during Vietnam. He enjoyed riding on his ATV and playing on his Playstation.

Besides his mother, Joyce Gokey of Bakersfield, he is survived by his wife, Cynthia (Stone) Gokey of Bakersfield; one son, David Gokey Jr. and his wife Brenda of Bakersfield; one daughter, Heidi Parent and her fiance Steve Greolinger of St. Albans; five grandchildren, Ethan Parent, Shania Gokey, Forrest Parent, Seth Gokey, and Jade Greolinger; six sisters and their spouses, Debbie and Phil Wilber of Fletcher, Dayle O'Brien of Fletcher, Donna and Billy Burt of Waterville, Deanna and Rodney Allen of Bakersfield Gloria and Roger Stone of Bakersfield, and Bonnie and Mark LaBrie of Fletcher; several nieces and nephews; and two very special friends, Dean Parent and Raymond Longley. Besides his father, Lincoln Gokey, he was predeceased by a brother, Richard Gokey and a nephew, Rodney Allen Jr.

In keeping with David's wishes he will be cremated and a memorial service will be held Sunday, June 13, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Bakersfield. Friends and relatives may call on the family at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until the hour of the funeral.

CLAYTON "BUTCH" CARL ROOT

ESSEX JUNCTION -- Clayton "Butch" Carl Root, 61, died Tuesday morning, June 8, 2004, at his home, with his loving family by his side.

Butch was born in Burlington on June 2, 1943, the son of Arthur and Evelyn (Thibault) Root.

On June 19, 1993, he married M. Kay (O'Sullivan) Theoret in Milton. He was a valuable and trusted employee of the F.R. Lafayette Co., where he worked all aspects of the business. Prior to this he worked for S.T. Griswold.

Butch loved to hunt and fish. His unique sense of humor and gift for banter will be missed by all who knew him.

A special thanks to all of those who helped him "Walk the Walk" through the years.

In addition to his wife, Kay of Essex, Butch is survived by his children, Carl Root of Winooski, Donna LeClaire of Burlington, his stepson Scott Theoret of Burlington, stepdaughter Julie Theoret of St. Johnsbury. Lovingly known as Papa to his grandchildren, Butch is also survived by his granddaughters, Samantha, Savannah, and Sierrah LeClaire, and Carmen Root; by his sisters, Dorothy Hubacher of Milton, and Helen Koch and her husband Robert of Hinesburg; his brothers-in-law, Lloyd Thayer of Milton, Sonny Jarvis of California, and Paul St. Gelais of Milton; and by several nieces and nephews and cousins. Butch is also survived by the mother of his children, Brenda Ostrout of Montgomery.

Mr. Root was predeceased by his parents Arthur and Evelyn Root; his sisters Barbara Jarvis, Pauline Thayer and Sally St. Gelais; and a brother Arthur Root Jr.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, June 11, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton. Burial will follow in the Holy Cross Cemetery in St. Albans.

Memorials in Butch's name may be made to the VNA Hospice Program, 1110 Prim Road, Colchester, Vt. 05446, who cared for him along with Kay so that he could remain at home. And his family wishes to express gratitude to his physicians and other health care providers.

Visiting hours will on Thursday, June 10, 2004, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home, Route 7, Milton.

PAULINE SURPRISE TUBBS

ALBURG, Vt. / RIPON, Wis. -- Pauline Surprise Tubbs, 94, a life long resident of the Alburg community, died on Nov. 7, 2003, at the home of her daughter, Winifred Grant in Ripon, Wis.

Pauline was born July 13, 1909, in Rouse Point, N.Y., a daughter of the late Joseph M. and Mary Olivina (Millette) Surprise.

She was educated in Alburg, Vt. and on Oct. 6, 1941, married Clarence R. Tubbs, who predeceased her on March 9, 1967. She was a member and organist at the St. Amadeus Roman Catholic Church for many years. Pauline will always be remembered for her involvement in the community and for many years was town, county and state historian.

Survivors include her daughter, Winifred Grant of Ripon, Wis.; four grandchildren, Lara Grant and Theodore (Sara) Grant of Ripon, Wis., Sara (Kris) Gould of Elkhorn and Samantha (Manuel) Henriques of Hawaii; one great-granddaughter, Caledonia Rae Grant of Ripon, Wis. Also surviving are three sisters, Catherine Valentine of Connecticut, Theresa Gelinas of North Carolina, and Fredericka Patterson of Albany, N.Y.; as well as many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Harold Surprise; and four sisters, Esther Surprise, Helen Searles, Natalie Gervais, Bertha Carpentier; son-in-law, Alexander Grant and stepdaughter, Betty Jean (Charles) Gay.

A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Amadeus Church in Alburg at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 12, 2004. Visitation will be at the Church from 9:30 until the hour of service. Interment will follow in the Tubbs family lot in Bush Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alburg Library Association or the Alburg Historical Society.

Arrangements are under the direction of Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton.

ROXY R. KENDALL

THETFORD CENTER / BRAINTREE -- Roxy R. Kendall, 89, died Sunday, June 6, 2004, at Rowan Court Nursing Home in Barre.

She was born Feb. 2, 1915, in Braintree, the daughter of George and Leaphy (Battles) Bent.

Roxy attended schools in Rochester, Braintree and graduated from Randolph High School She married George Kendall Jan. 12, 1936, in Randolph. Mr. Kendall died in 1998. She worked at George Battles' mink farm in Braintree for several years. The Kendalls made their home in Maine, New Hampshire and Braintree before moving to Thetford Center in 1993. She was a member of the Hearth and Heath Club in Braintree and the Randolph American Legion Post 9 Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed embroidering, quilting, fishing, going to the Fryberg Fair and spending time at Moosehead Lake in Maine.

She is survived by two sons, George Kendall Jr. of Braintree and Charles Kendall of Georgia Plains; two daughters, Roxy Maxfield of Thetford Center and Christine Labreque of Georgia Plains; two brothers, Harold Bent of New Jersey and Gordon Bent of Braintree; a sister, Beda Kendall of Claremont, N.H.; 19 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Kendall; five brothers, George, Allan, Herbert, Hubert and Paul Bent; and two sisters, Violet Cassidy and Rose Haupt.

Graveside memorial services will be held Friday, June 11, at 1 p.m. at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Randolph Center, with Reverend Dale Nicholas officiating. There are no calling hours.

Friends wishing may make contributions in Roxy's memory to the Upper Valley Ambulance, Fairlee, Vt. 05045.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home, Randolph.

PHILIP F. "MURPH" IRISH

ENOSBURG FALLS -- Philip F. "Murph" Irish, age 77, passed away Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

He was born Oct. 23, 1926 in Marshfield, Vt., the son of the late Harry and Ruth (Tatro) Irish.

Murph was a resident of Enosburg Falls most of his life and was a member of the Enosburg Falls United Methodist Church. He was employed at McDermott's Trucking in Enosburg Falls and in 1980 he started working for the Enosburg School District as a bus driver and custodian retiring in 1992. He was a U.S Navy Veteran of World War II and was a member of the American Legion Post 42 of Enosburg Falls and the V.F.W. Robert Glidden Post of St. Albans. He was also a member of the Lincoln Lodge 78 F&AM of Enosburg Falls.

He is survived by his children, Barbara Paradee and her husband Doug of Enosburg Falls, James Irish and his wife, Mary of Sheldon, Peter Irish of Enosburg Falls, and Sara Johnson and her fiance Tom Larose of Enosburg Falls; nine grandchildren, Amity Bracey and her husband Stephen, Matthew Irish, Levi Amanda Irish, Ben Irish, Michael Irish, Jake and Sam Irish, and Cory and Chad Johnson; two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Zachary Bracey; three sisters, Winifred DeGoosh of Franklin, Ruth Ann Cramton and her husband Mark of Bristol, N.H., and Norma Barrows and her husband Ralph of Stowe; a sister-in-law, Margaret Irish of St. Albans; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, June (Chapman) Irish; two brothers, Robert "Chuck" Irish and Stuart "Steve" Irish.

In keeping with Murph's wishes he will be cremated and a graveside service will be held Saturday, June 12, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the Enosburgh Center Cemetery with the American Legion Post 42 of Enosburg Falls providing a legion service and military honors. There will be no visiting hours.

For those who wish, contributions in his memory may be made to the Thomas Cook Endowment Fund at the Vermont Children's Hospital, 111 Colchester Ave., Burlington, Vt. 05401.
