RUTH TAY PEARSON

ST. ALBANS -- Ruth Tay Pearson, 90, died peacefully at Redstone Villa on May 22, 2004. She was born on June 14, 1913, in Narberth, Penn. and grew up in Willamette, Ill., where she attended New Trier High School. She was the only child of Clarence and Ruth Sappington Tay. She graduated from Beloit Collage in Beloit, Wis. with a B.A. in English and was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She did advance studies at the University of Vermont.

Ruth had a wide variety of interests. She was a member of the original committee to seek funds from the Vermont legislature for mental health. She was a past president of the St. Albans Garden Club, was an active member of the Old Lace Society, and was a consultant on old lace for the Shelburne Museum. Her collection of antique quilts was exhibited in many locations. Ruth was on the finance committee and vestry of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. She was on the board of the Franklin-Grand Isle Mental Health Association, was president of The Autonoe Club, and a member of the St. Albans Home Demonstration Group. She traveled extensively in Europe in the 1970's and enjoyed summers at the family camp at Hathaway Point.

She is survived by Charles Pearson, her husband of 65 years; as well as her daughter, Anne Umphrey of Concord, Mass; her son and daughter-in-law, William and Marguerite (Peggy) Pearson of Stowe, Vt.; and her four grandchildren, Catherine Cowart, Willard Unphrey, and Tay and Kimberley Pearson; her sisters-in-law, Ellen Wilder and Florence Pearson; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter, Patricia Pearson; and her grandson, Michael Umphrey. Ruth also treasured the many friendships made throughout her life in St. Albans and was especially grateful to the compassionate team on staff at Redstone Villa for their unlimited generosity of kindness and devotion.

There will be a memorial service at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in St. Albans on Sunday, June 6, 2004, at 1:30 p.m. with The Reverend Dennis E. Hayward officiating.

In honor of Ruth's lifetime love of animals, especially cats, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Franklin County Humane Society, 30 Sunset Meadows, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.

The Heald Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

ALICE E. CARR

SWANTON / TAMWORTH, N.H. -- Mrs. Alice E. Carr, age 96, died Tuesday morning, June 1, 2004, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Jerome Duffy, in Swanton. She was born in New Haven, Conn., Oct. 12, 1907, daughter of the late Francis S. and Anna A. (Adams) Pascoe.

Alice married William I. Carr, Sr., April 5, 1931. Mr. Carr died Aug. 23, 1984. She was employed by the Harvard Trust Co., Bank in Cambridge, Mass., for over 15 years. Alice was a Lioness in Tamworth, N.H. and a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Ossipee, N.H.

While residing with her family in Swanton for the past three years, she was a communicant at the Church of the Nativity and frequented the St. Louis Church in Highgate.

Her survivors include her three children, Anne and her husband Jerome Duffy of Swanton, William L Carr, Jr. of Tamworth, N.H., E. Jeanne and her husband Ronald Rascati of Pleasant Hill, Pa.; 19 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in the Church of The Nativity on Friday. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., St. Albans, from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. On Saturday friends may call from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Furber & White Funeral Home, 2925 White Mountain Highway in North Conway, N.H. Interment will be at 3 p.m. in the Carr/Pascoe family lot in Our Lady of the Mountains Cemetery in North Conway. Memorials may be made to the Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Hare Health Circle, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

ROBERT JAMES LEFTAULT

NEWPORT, Pa. -- Robert James Leftault, 50, of Newport, Pa. passed away May 26, 2004.

He was a beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend. Through those he touched he shall live eternally.

A memorial service will be held on June 4, 2004, at 11:30 a.m. in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery Annville, Pa.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association of Vermont, 30 Farrell Street, South Burlington, Vt. 05403.

CAROLYN JOYCE BRADBURY

CLINTON, N.Y. / RICHFORD, Vt. -- Carolyn Joyce (Rogerson) Bradbury, 75, died May 14, 2004, in the Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y. following a brief illness. She was the wife of Loren G. Bradbury.

Born Dec. 23, 1928, in Richford, Vt., she was the only child of Christopher and Alma (St. Germain) Rogerson.

She graduated from Richford High School in 1946 as the class valedictorian and the recipient of the Good Citizenship (DAR) Award. She was very active in school activities, serving as an editor on the Searchlight Board, vice president of her class, member of the Girls and Mixed Glee Club, the French Club, senior play and basketball and softball teams.

She was a member of the CYO and of All Saints Catholic Church where she was wed Dec. 31, 1950, to Loren G. Bradbury.

A graduate of the University of Vermont in the spring of 1950, she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega.

Before moving to Clinton, N.Y., she was the first teacher of the kindergarten in South Burlington, and when she retired she had served 25 years as a teacher in the Clinton, N.Y., area.

Among her activities in Clinton, she was a strong member of the Republican party, and active in art clubs and the St. Mary's Catholic Church, where a Memorial Service for her was held May 18.

She was cremated, and interment will be in St. John Vianney Cemetery in South Burlington on a date to be announced later.

Survivors include: her husband, Loren Bradbury of 4 Sherman Place, Clinton, N.Y., 13323; also three daughters, Linda Bradbury of Palmer, Alaska, Betsy Pond of Burlington, Vt.; and Sally Zito of Brusette, Mont.; five grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Ann and her husband, Lewis Wetzel, of Colchester; and a few relatives on the Canadian border.

Joyce (as she was known to her many friends, classmates and relatives) "taught people how to laugh."

BERNARD A. GADOUAS

SHELDON -- Bernard A. Gadouas, 68, a resident of 868 Vermont Route 105 in Sheldon, died early Sunday morning, May 30, 2004, at Haven Health Care Center in St. Albans Town.

Born in St. Albans, he was a son of the late Edmond and Florence (Richard) Gadouas. He attended schools in St. Albans and graduated in the commercial class from Holy Angels High School. On Feb. 15, 1958, he married the former Claudette Bedard, who survives him.

Prior to his retirement, Bernard had been associated for 27 years in equipment maintenance with the former Union Carbide Corporation of St. Albans. Following retirement, he worked for a time at both Wesco and Kaytec Companies. He faithfully served his country in the United States Army, was a member of the Sheldon Post of the American Legion and was a longtime parishioner of St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church in Sheldon Springs.

In addition to his wife Claudette of Sheldon, Bernard leaves: two sons, Jeff Gadouas and his fiancee, Lisa Little, of Sheldon, and Rick Gadouas of Highgate; three daughters, Cynthia Larned of Swanton, Brenda McCoy and her husband, David, of Georgia and Francine Perkins and her husband, Jay, of Williston; seven grandchildren, Josh and Rachelle Gadouas, Jennifer and Phylica Gadouas, Jessica and Danielle Gallant and Katie McCoy, as well as three step-grandchildren, Deirdre Perkins, Bryan Perkins and Erick Little. He also is survived by a sister, Norma Gadouas of St. Albans; brothers-in-law, Paul Bedard and his wife Lorraine of St. Albans, Andre Bedard and his wife Theresa of Greenfield Park, Quebec, Jean Guy Bedard and his wife Winnie of Schaghticoke, N.Y.; sister-in-law, Denise Richard of Sheldon; sisters-in-law, Louise Boisvert and her husband, Norman, of Jericho, Dianne Bedard of Milton, Frances Bessette and her husband, Donald, of Highgate and brother-in-law, Rene Bedard and his wife, Helene, of Watervliet, N.Y.; an uncle Ernest Gadouas of St. Albans and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves his faithful companions, his dog Sweetie and his cat Kittie.

Bernard was predeceased by two brothers-in-law, William L. Richard and Robert Bedard.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, June 5, 2004, at 11 a.m. from St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church in Sheldon Springs. The pastor, Father Bernard J. Bechard, SSE will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in the Gadouas family lot in Saint Anthony Cemetery. There will be no public calling hours.

In lieu of flowers gifts in Bernard's memory may be made to: the Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, Vt. 05478 or to the Franklin County Humane Society, 30 Sunset Meadows, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.

MARY JANE BESSETTE

ST. ALBANS -- Mary Jane Bessette, 67, a longtime resident of Swanton Road died late Monday afternoon, May 31, 2004, in the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans City.

Born in Highgate, July 10, 1936, she was a daughter of Joseph R. and Nettie (Wells) Cusson. She attended Bellows Free Academy-St. Albans.

During her working life, Mary had been associated with IBM, Arthur Treacher's and The Fonda Group. She also operated the Coffee Shop Restaurant at the Cadillac Motel and worked as an administrative assistant for the Vermont Department of Health in Burlington for seventeen years. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Post 758 St. Albans, and belonged to the Rutland Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans.

Mary will always be remembered for her love of gambling. She enjoyed playing all games -- especially Bingo -- and taking chances with her lottery tickets. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She leaves her loving mother and caregiver, Nettie Cusson of St. Albans; a daughter, June Root and companion James Gauvin of St. Albans; grandchildren, Joel Root, Josie Root and Jollene Root and companion Brian Brault; great-grandchildren, Nicholas Root and Tayler Root-Brault; daughter, Patricia Ann Sifford and husband, Perry Wayne Sifford, of Virginia Beach, Va.; grandchildren, Ronald L. Rushford Jr., Travis D. Rushford, Antoinette R. Quiambao, Leslie A. Cole, Julie A. Rushford and Sam W. Sifford; great-grandchildren, Burgandy Rushford, Erin Rushford, Cody Sifford, Ashlynn Cole, Breanna Cole, C.J. Sifford, Andrea Sifford, Chris Sifford and Lauren Sifford; daughter, Mary Nettie Pelissier and companion Gary Carncross of Richmond; grandchildren, Kelly Clements and husband, Jim, and Ryan Pelissier; three grandchildren, Josh and Heather Gauvin, Chad Ransom and Jamie Ransom; great-grandchildren, Luke and Baylee Clements; son Chuck Bessette and his wife, a very special daughter-in-law, Sue, of St. Albans; grandchildren, Jerrod Bessette and Dawn Lacombe and great-grandchildren Justin, T. J., and Heather. Also surviving is an uncle, Morton Wells of Franklin, Vt. and Cohoes, N.Y.; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Donald and Phyllis Bessette of St. Albans and Lucille Orvis of Bristol; three special cousins, as well as many other cousins.

In addition to her father, she was predeceased by her husband on April 20, 2001.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday evening, June 3, 2004, at 8 p.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton. Father John J. Meagher, SSE will officiate.

Interment services will take place Saturday, June 5, 2004, at 3 p.m. at the Cusson family lot in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 7 p.m. until the hour of the funeral.

Gifts in Mary's memory may be made in the form of Masses.

ROGER E. CLOKEY

FAIRFAX -- The Lord's light is shining brightly on the soul of Roger, who joined his Creator on Monday, May 31, in Fairfax, Vt. while surrounded by his loving family. Roger was born July 2, 1939, in Montgomery, a son of Joseph and Hazel (Sylvester) Clokey.

He graduated from Enosburg High School in 1957 and enlisted in the U. S. Air Force. On March 4, 1959, he married his high school sweetheart, Alberta Kittell, and they lived in Texas until his discharge in 1961. From there, they moved to Connecticut, where Roger worked for four years at UniRoyal. He joined IBM in Essex Junction in 1965 and, after 29 years, retired in 1993. Never able to slow down, Roger's ambition carried his retirement career into new employment opportunities, including working for Smuggler's Notch Resort in Jeffersonville and Huber & Suhner in Essex.

Over his lifetime, Roger's gift of knowledge and wide expertise was always extended to helping family and friends repair everything from cars to household appliances. His giving personality and upbeat attitude will be missed by everyone who knew him. A 32nd Degree Mason, Roger was a 25 year member of Lamoille Lodge 6 F&AM. He was a member of American Legion Post 35, where he had the honor of holding the office of chaplain.

Roger is survived by his wife of 45 years, Alberta Clokey of Fairfax; his mother, Hazel Clokey of Montgomery; brother, Douglas and his wife, Carol Clokey, of Montgomery; two sons, Steven and his wife, Robin, of Jericho, and Jeffrey and his fiancée, Kelly, of Fairfax; seven grandchildren, Rachel, Ethan, Justin, Tyler, Kira, Noah, and Miles. He was predeceased by his father in August 1984, and son, Glenn, in June 1983. He also leaves many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Visiting hours will be held at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St. Albans, on Thursday, June 3, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service will be conducted at the Baptist Church/Masonic Lodge on Main Street in Fairfax at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 4, with interment immediately following at the Sheldon Village Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in his name may be made to the Fairfax Fire Department or Fairfax Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 428, Fairfax, Vt. 05454.

A Masonic Service of Remembrance will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 7 p.m.

ROBERT J. SWALLICK

ENOSBURG -- Robert J. Swallick, 60, a resident of this area for the past 18 years, passed away unexpectedly early Tuesday morning, June 1, 2004. He was born in Perthamboy, N.J., Sept. 20, 1943, the son of the late Michael and Mary (Rominsohn) Swallick. On June 2, 1974, he married Kathleen N. Kavchak in Jackson, N.J.

Robert was employed as a brass specialist in the Department of Homeland Security, where he worked for 35 years. Prior to that, he was a sky marshall for four years. He was an Army veteran, serving during the Vietnam Era from 1960 to 1964, when he was discharged as a sergeant. He served on the Franklin County Regional Planning Commission. He was a man of many interests. He was a railroad buff and collected model trains. He enjoyed reading and history, music, especially jazz, and photography. He was also a lover of animals.

In addition to his wife of 30 years, Robert is survived by a son, Stephen Swallick, serving with the U.S. Army in Colorado Springs, Colo.; Kathy's mother and father, Catherine and George Kavchak of Enosburg; a sister-in-law, Barbara Schoen and her significant other, Rob Jahngen, of Milton; a brother-in-law and his wife, George and Jean Kavchak of Enosburg; as well as nieces and nephews, Scott Schoen, Tammy Tracy and Lorelei Kavchak, Brian, Arlene, John and Daniel Helwig and their children. He also was an "uncle by love" to Holly Ray Sherrer. He will be greatly missed by his many good friends.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 5, at 2 p.m. in St. Paul's United Methodist Church in St. Albans. The Reverend Oren Lane will officiate. Interment will be later in Sheldon Village Cemetery.

Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to either Enosburg Rescue Squad or Enosburg Fire Department, 83 Sampsonville Road, Enosburg Falls, Vt. 05450.

Visitation will be on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St. Albans.

KEVIN FRANCIS SHEEHAN

MILTON -- Kevin Francis Sheehan, 36, died unexpectedly Tuesday, May 25, 2004, while serving his country with the Vermont Army National Guard in Iraq.

Kevin was born on May 8, 1968 in Springfield, Vt., the son of Glendon and Shirley (Barrows) Sheehan.

He graduated from Springfield High school, Class of 1986. He played baseball and football throughout his high school career, and was captain of the football team his senior year. Kevin graduated from Vermont Technical College in 1990 with his degree in Civil Engineering. He worked at Engineers Construction Incorporated, as a Project Engineer and played in an important role in designing the base for the Veteran's memorial in Essex Junction, as well as other projects around the area. In July of 1991 Kevin enlisted in the Vermont Army National Guard where he rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant.

His achievements included the Bronze Star - Post Humous, Purple Heart - Post Humous, Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expedionary medal - Post Humous, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal - Post Humous, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Army Reserves Component Overseas Training Ribbon, Army Good Conduct Ribbon - Post Humous, Vermont National Guard Outstanding Unit Award, Vermont Good Conduct Ribbon, Vermont Active Duty for Training Ribbon, Vermont Service Ribbon, Vermont Duty Ribbon and the Vermont State Special Duty Ribbon.

On Sept. 17, 1993, Kevin married his high school sweetheart, Heather McGrotty at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Springfield, Vt. They settled in Milton in 1999, and quickly became part of the community. Kevin enjoyed coaching for the Milton Youth Soccer league. He began playing hockey for the Full Stride Hockey Organization in 2003. His love for hockey was so great, he became assistant coach for the Milton Youth Hockey Association.

Kevin is survived by his wife Heather, and their two precious children, Nathaniel John, and Alyson Margret Sheehan. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Kathleen Stern and husband Neil of Springfield, Keith Sheehan and his wife Victoria of Springfield, Karen Sheehan of Lebanon, N.H., Karleen Cass and her husband Michael of Springfield; by his mother and father-in-laws, Bonnie Jeffrey of Chester and William and Karyl McGrotty of Springfield; his sister-in-law Jill McGrotty and her fiance Todd Graham of Londonderry, N.H.; four nieces, two nephews, two great-nephews, his aunts and uncles, and his best friend Chris Gassett, and friends Joe Kelly, and Paul Tice.

He was predeceased by his father Glendon in 1990, his mother Shirley in 2002, and his nephew John in 1994.

Kevin was a dedicated and loyal husband, father, brother, uncle, son, friend and co-worker. His comforting presence and infectious smile will be sorely missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at 11 a.m. in Holy Angels Catholic Church in St. Albans. Burial will follow in the Milton Village Cemetery.

Contributions in Kevin's memory can be made to either the Milton Youth Hockey Association: P.O. Box 742, Milton, Vt. 05468; or to a Trust Fund for his children Nathaniel and Alyson.

Friends may call on Kevin's family today, June 1, 2004, from 1 to 3 and 6 to 9 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton.

Additional parking will be available at the Milton Bowling Center located on Middle Road in Milton, with a shuttle provided by Mountain Transit during visiting hours on Tuesday.
