MARCEL HERMAN BENOIT

SHELDON -- Marcel Herman Benoit, 80, died late Tuesday evening, Aug. 17, 2004, at the home of his son Leon on Crowe Hill.

Born in Sainte Armand, Quebec Canada he was the son of the late Eugene and Josephine (Jourdenais) Benoit. He attended schools in Canada and on Aug. 22, 1953, was married to the former Marie-Jeanne Rainville who survives him.

A successful dairy farmer Marcel owned and operated his own dairy farm on Crowe Hill from 1957 until his retirement in 1989. He was also a well-known maple sugar producer and served several years as the treasurer for the Franklin County Maple Producers Cooperative. In his earlier years, and in partnership with his brother Jacques, they were responsible for a quarry operation in the Phillipsburgh area of Quebec. He was a longtime member of St. Anthony Roman Catholic Parish in Sheldon Springs and in 1947 in Bedford Quebec he joined the Knights of Columbus. He was presently a Fourth Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus, Assembly 1149 in St. Albans.

PHILIP R. "PHIL" DOMEY

SWANTON -- Philip R. "Phil" Domey, 84, a life-long resident of this area, passed away, Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, in the Fletcher Allen Health Care Facility following a brief illness. He was born in St. Albans, Feb. 1, 1920, the son of the late Robert H. and Emma (Willett) Domey. On Sept. 7, 1941, in St. Albans he married Evelyn Uren who survives him.

Phil served in the United States Army during World War II. He was employed for several years by the Central Vermont Railway and retired in 1979 from the F. W. Myers Company in Rouses Point, N.Y. as Vice President of Operations. More recently he was associated with his son, Geoff in "The Parts Store" in Swanton as Vice President. He was a life member of the Green Mountain Post 1, American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans Association. Phil enjoyed working on crossword puzzles, reading, and watching and feeding the birds.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Evelyn of Swanton; three sons: Brian Domey and his wife Judy of St. Albans, Bob Domey of Swanton and Geoff and Jeanine Domey of Swanton; three sisters: Jane Brigham of St. Albans, Marion Chaffee of St. Albans and "Billie" Moffat of Montpelier; six grandchildren: Jason and Christopher Domey of St. Albans, Baron Domey of Dana Point, Calif., Pamela Stocks and her husband Jeff of Raleigh, N.C., and Cody and Steven Domey of Swanton; and two great-grandchildren, Logan and Aiden Stocks. In addition to his parents, Phil was predeceased by a daughter, Pamela Jane Domey in 1957; two sisters, Priscilla Pelton and Martha Collins; and a brother, Robert Domey.

A special thanks to the doctors and nurses of McClure 3 at the Fletcher Allen Health Care Facility for the care Phil received.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, at 2 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans. Interment will follow in the family lot in Greenwood Cemetery in Saint Albans. Phil's family will receive friends on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

ESTHER MANDIGO WHITCOMB

COLUMBIA, S.C. / RICHFORD, Vt. -- Esther Mandigo Whitcomb, age 95, died Jan. 12, 2004, in Columbia, S.C.

She was born in Richford Oct. 25, 1908, the daughter of the late Robert and Laura (Curtis) Mandigo.

A graveside memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at 3 p.m. at the Hillside Cemetery in Richford. There will be no visiting hours. Following the graveside service there will be a gathering held at the Richford Methodist Church.

For those who wish, contributions in her memory may be made to the charity of ones choice.

Spears Funeral Home in Enosburg Falls is in charge of local arrangements.

ETHALENE P. (CHANDLER) PARANT

NORTH HERO / ESSEX JUNCTION -- Ethalene Phyllis (Chandler) Parant, age 93, died early Sunday morning, Aug. 15, 2004, surrounded by her loving family at the home of her daughter in North Hero, from complications of pancreatic cancer. She was born Oct. 27, 1910, in Waterville, Vt., daughter of the late Arthur A. and Catherine (Brown) Chandler.

She was a graduate of BFA Fairfax Class of 1929. She married Charles A. Parant on July 16, 1931. Together they helped start the well known "Windridge Inn" in Jeffersonville, Vt.

Charlie predeceased her on Nov. 9, 1996. Ethalene was an encouraging and devoted Red Sox Fan having a fond respect for all of the team members throughout the years. She enjoyed hooking rugs for her family members and working on challenging crossword puzzles in her spare time. But most of all she lived for her family, adoring her entire family as much as they adored her. She always looked forward to the treasured and precious times spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Ethalene's passing will be a great loss to all of those who were fortunate enough to have known and loved her.

She is survived by one son, Charles A. Parant Jr. and his wife Loretta of Lyndhurst, Va.; two daughters, Judith Parant Rooney and Robert Rancourt of North Hero, and Susan Parant Correia and her husband George of Essex Jct.; one daughter-in-law, Barbara Parant; two sons-in-law, Rod Rooney, and John Godin; one brother, Morton Chandler and his wife Jennie; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Chandler, Petty Reynolds and Eleanor Chandler Dalton; 37 grandchildren including, Charles III, Katherine, Jody, Pamela, and Kim Parant, Todd and Tracy Rooney, Robin, Michael, Steven, and Brian Godin, Vickie, Kathie, Tammie, Julie, George Jr., Cristian, Ashley, Thomas, Kevin, Heather, Adam, Sarah, Daniel, Jonathan, Catherine, Carolyn, Jennifer, Rebecca, Aaron, and Matthew Correia; 31 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was also predeceased by 12 brothers and sisters.

Visiting hours will be held at the Hayes-Rich funeral home on Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, at 1 p.m. in the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home with the Reverends James Perry and Elizabeth Griffin co-officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in Fairfax Plains Cemetery.

ROY R. MASKELL, SR.

ALBURG / GEORGIA -- Roy R. Maskell, Sr. is now with his beloved "Tootsie." He died Aug. 10, 2004, after a long illness.

Born in Massena, N.Y., Jan. 25, 1928, to the late Bertha (Martin) and Russell Maskell, he was raised in Burlington.

Survived by daughters, Mary Blow and husband George of Newport News, Va. and Donna Dunkley and husband James of Cascade, Colo.; son Roy Maskell II and wife Josephine of Fairfax, Vt.; grandchildren, Allan Blow and Wife Janet and Stepson Alex Blose, Jay Dunkley, Alyssa Dunkley and Alex Maskell; a sister, Marion Greenia of Georgia, Vt.; a sister-in-law, Irene Maskell of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

Roy was a longtime resident of Georgia and Alburg. He worked for the A.D. Pease Grain Co. in Burlington until its closure in the 1980s. He also worked for Vermont Furniture and was a housepainter.

He enjoyed working with wood and working in his yard. Most importantly he was a devoted husband and father.

There will be no public calling hours. Graveside Funeral Services will be held Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at 11 a.m. from the family lot in St. Mary's Cemetery, 65 Canada St. Swanton Village. Father John J. Meagher, SSE will officiate.

Gifts in Roy's memory may be made to the Vermont Respite House, 99 Allen Brook Lane, Williston, Vt. 05495.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton.

GEORGE ALFRED "ZIP" EBERHARDT

ST. ALBANS CITY / SWANTON -- George Alfred "Zip" Eberhardt, 57, of 8 Stebbins Street in St. Albans City, died early Thursday morning, Aug. 12, 2004, in the Vermont Veterans Hospital in White River Junction.

Born in St. Albans, Jan. 17, 1947, he was the son of Lena (Roberts) Gadouas. He attended the former St. Anne's Academy and Swanton High School. In 1966 he enlisted in the United States Navy and faithfully served his country during the Viet Nam Era. He was honorably discharged in 1970. More recently he has been a member of the American Legion, Green Mountain Post 1 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 758, both of St. Albans.

George leaves his mother, Mrs. Lena Gadouas of Swanton; his sister, Muriel Girard and her husband Robert of St. Albans; three brothers, Arthur R. Eberhardt of Fort White, Fla., Albert Gadouas and his wife Valerie of Highgate and Marcel Gadouas and his wife Debbie of Milton; his aunt and uncles Eva and Paul Brousseau of Highgate Falls, Leigh Nokes of Berlin, Conn.; several nieces, nephews; and a special friend Brenda of St. Albans.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at 10 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada Street, Swanton Village. Father John J. Meagher, SSE will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton on Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

BEVERLY ANN BEAN

ST. ALBANS -- Mrs. Beverly Ann Bean, age 66, beloved wife and mother, died unexpectedly Friday evening, Aug. 6, 2004, at her home. She was born in St. Albans Dec. 13, 1937, daughter of Ellen (Arpan) and the late Stephen Bruley.

Bev was employed at Verdelle Village, E.C.F., for several years. She was an active member of the Women of the Moose, Chapter 321, of St. Albans. She will be fondly remembered for her love of music and the incredible devotion she showed to all of her friends and family. She had a great love for her birds “Tuffy” and “Jenny.” She will be missed by all that knew her.

She is survived by three children, Debra A. Bean and her partner Adrian Irish, Jr., of St. Albans, Lynn Walker of Florida and Timothy Bean of Sheldon; her mother Ellen and her husband Clement Lestage of St. Albans; two sisters Arlene and her husband Arthur Gaudette of Fairfax, and Barbara Gaudette of Fairfax; brother David Bruley and his wife Phyllis of Northfield; three grandchildren, Marya May and her husband Willard Zweeres of St. Albans, Joshua Walker of Florida and Katie L. Bean of Sheldon; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Robert Bean Oct. 22, 1988; and by her sister Evelyn Montgomery.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, at 8 p.m. in the Brady & Levesque Chapel. Father Maurice Roy, pastor of Holy Angels Church and the Women of the Moose will co–officiate. Friends may call at the funeral home, 86 South Main St. from 2 to 4 and 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Interment will be private.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

BERTRAND ARTHUR GONYEA

SWANTON -- Bertrand Arthur Gonyea, age 82, died early Tuesday morning at his residence in Giordano Manor in Swanton Village.

Born in Alburg, Feb. 23, 1922, he was the son of the late Joseph E. and Clarita B. (LeDuc) Gonyea. He was a graduate of the former Alburg High School and in 1945 was married to the former Rita Pelkey who predeceased him in 1983.

Prior to his retirement Bert was associated for many years with The Fonda Group in St. Albans. In earlier years he had worked at The Howard Eldridge Service Station and the Missisquoi Wildlife Refuge both of Swanton. He faithfully served his country in the United States Coast Guard during World War II and was a member of the American Legion, Creller-Landon Post 60 of Alburg and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 758 St. Albans.

Bert leaves his son Alan Gonyea and his wife Greeta of St. Albans Town; two grandchildren, Andrew Gonyea and Sara Lewellen; two great-grandchildren, Kelsie Lewellen and Alexis Gonyea; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Two brothers, Marcel and Elmer Gonyea predeceased him.

Graveside Funeral Services will be held Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, at 2 p.m. from the Gonyea Family lot in Riverside Cemetery, North River Street, Swanton. Father John J. Meagher, SSE will officiate.

In keeping with Bert's wishes, there will be no public calling hours.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue. Swanton.

BEVERLY E. GARVIN

ST. ALBANS -- Mrs. Beverly E. Garvin, age 77, died Tuesday morning, Aug. 10, 2004, in Haven Health Care Center, following an extended illness.

She was born in Swanton, Aug. 3, 1927, daughter of the late Howard and Harriet (Hatch) Cassavoy. She was employed by Union Carbide Consumer Products, for over 35 years, in St. Albans. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and a member of the Women of the Moose, Chapter 321.

Besides her husband, James Garvin, whom she married Dec. 17, 1988, she is survived by her son, Rodney Newcity of Swanton and Barre; her brother Richard and his wife Theresa Cassavoy of Essex; her sister Joyce Hamel of Binghamton, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter, Carol Dunham on Dec. 31, 1999.

At Beverly's request, there will be no public services. Interment will be in the Garvin family lot in St. Mary's Cemetery in Swanton.

BURLINGTON -- Gail Ann Cote, 54, passed away peacefully Friday, July 23, 2004, at high noon, surrounded by her family.

The Liturgy if Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at 7 p.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada Street, Swanton. Father John J. Meagher, SSE will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.
