STELLA D. P ATNO

ST. ALBANS -- "At rest with her husband, " Stella D. Patno, 94, of Brainerd St. in St. Albans and formerly of Charlotte St. in Burlington died at her home on Wednesday, April 18, 2001.

She was born in Canada on Dec. 14, 1906, the daughter of Arthur and Rose (Mongeon) Allard. On Aug. 24, 1928 she was married in St. Anthony's Church in Burlington to Ford H. Patno who predeceased her in 1992 after 60 years of marriage. She was a member of Christ the King Parish and of the Catholic Daughters of America and the Athena Club. She also was a very active volunteer for many and varied civic and religious causes.

She is survived by her four children, Floyd Patno of Brattleboro, Roger Patno and his wife Joyce of St. Albans, Margaret Hinen of Gaston, S.C., Roy Patno and his wife Atchar of Hinsdale, N.H.; two sisters-in-law, Margaret Beauchemin and Mildred Allard both of Burlington; 9 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by 10 brothers and sisters, a daughter-in-law Elizabeth Patno and by a grandson Gregory Patno.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 20, 2001 at 11 a.m. in Christ the King Roman Catholic Church with burial to follow in New Mount Calvary Cemetery. Those who wish may make contributions in her memory to the charity of one's choice. There will be no visiting hours but the family will be receiving visitors at 6 Brainerd St. in St. Albans following the services on Friday. Arrangements are by the Ready Funeral Home South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Rd., Burlington.

DEBORAH LEE REID

BURLINGTON -- Deborah Lee Reid died Monday, April 16, 2001, in the presence of her family and friends. She had waged a long and courageous fight with ulcerative colitis and resulting complications.

Debbie was born in St. Albans Aug. 18, 1956, the daughter of Roy J. Jewett and Rose (Trombley) Jewett. She graduated from Bellows Free Academy, class of 1974. Debbie was employed by the Olympiad Health Racquet Aerobics Club which had served as an anchor in her life for the past fifteen years. During the time that her children attended Flynn School, she volunteered a tremendous amount of time to benefit all the students. Among her accomplishments, she established a computer lab for kindergarten through second grade students with used and donated equipment, was instrumental in adding recreational equipment to the playground and served as an officer of the PTO. Debbie loved flowers, baskets and vases and was especially proud of her gardens of irises, but above all, the light of her life was her two children, Michelle and Chris.

Debbie married A. Gary Reid on Oct. 15, 1977. Besides her husband, she is survived by her daughter Michelle L. Reid, her son Christopher N. Reid, her mother Rose Jewett of St. Albans, her uncle Charles Trombley and his wife Edith of Palm Harbor, Fla., her sister Gloria and her husband Ronald Hemond of St. Albans, her sister Donna Jettie of Highgate Center, her sister Patricia O'dell of St. Albans, her sister Cynthia and her husband David Godin of St. Albans, her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Andrew J. Reid and Ethel Reid of Burlington, her three sisters-in-law, Ora Jewett of St. Albans, Ann Williams of Burlington and Susan Shepherd of Burlington, and many nephews, nieces and cousins. She was predeceased by her father Roy J. Jewett and her brother, Roy K. "Chip" Jewett, whom she deeply missed.

A memorial service for Debbie will be held Sunday, May 20, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the residence of A. Gary Reid, 395 Appletree Point Rd., in Burlington, a time when everyone can enjoy the beauty of her irises.

In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to make an expression of sympathy is asked to consider sponsoring her husband Gary to run in the Jiggety Jog, May 19, 2001, an activity which benefits the Vermont Respite House. Contributions can be made through her husband or directly to the Vermont Respite House in Debbie's name at 99 Allen Brook Lane, Williston, VT 05495.

GEMBERT CASTLE

FAIRFIELD -- Gembert Castle, 80, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, April 15, 2001.

Gembert was a lifelong dairy farmer and was born in Fletcher Oct. 30, 1920, the son of the late Claude and Angeline (Mayo) Castle. Two brothers, Pliney and Clayton predeceased him.

He is survived by two brothers, Wilmer of Fairfield and Leon of St. Albans; two sisters, Ruth Meyer of Bristol, Conn., and Betty Marshall of Highgate, as well as several nieces, nephews, great nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 21, 2001, at 11 a.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton. Pastor David Parady from the Colonial Bible Baptist Church will officiate. Interment will follow in the family lot in Bradley Cemetery in Fairfield. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home on Friday evening, April 20, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m.

The family wishes to thank Bonnie LaFrance who provided wonderful care, Mary Bostwick and all those who cared for Gembert from the Franklin County Home Health Agency.

ROBERT G. NORTH

MILTON -- Robert G. North, 80, of McMullen Road, died Sunday evening April 15, 2001, at his home in Milton following a long illness.

Robert was born March 26, 1921 in Shelburne, the son of George and Grace Shaw North. A carpenter by trade, Robert worked for many years as a Union Carpenter on various area projects.

On Aug. 1, 1941, he married Doris Sanderson in South Burlington. He served his country during WWII with the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945. He spent 28 months of duty in the Mediterranean theatre of operation.

Robert was a member of the United Church of Milton. A lifetime member of the DAV Donald Cooke Chapter #5 Burlington, VFW Post #7848 Milton and a former member of the American Legion Post #57 in Milton. An avid outdoorsman he loved ice fishing and deep sea fishing with his wife. He also enjoyed camping, hunting, carpentry, gardening and operating his mini farm in Milton.

He is survived by his wife to whom he has been married to for over 59 years, Doris North of Milton and his children, Grace Williams of St. Albans, Jeannine Francis and her husband Richard of Hinesburg, Emil North and his close friend Karen Root of Milton, and Annette North and her spouse, Judith North of Huntington; his ten grandchildren, Kansas, Leslie, Peggy, Robin, Doris, Brent, Brock, Dominique, Emil Jean Jr., and Robert J.; 17 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; one sister, Myrtle Garcia of South Burlington; two brother-in-laws, Clifford Sanderson of South Burlington and Conrad Sanderson and his wife Yvonne of Florida; five sister-in-laws, Arlene Burt of Burlington, Juanita DeMar of Essex, Lucy Laughlin of Ohio, Norma Mayer and her husband Norman of Florida and Hilda Howard and her husband Richard of Westford, as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his son, Robert C. North on Feb. 5, 1958; by four brothers, seven sisters and one sister-in-law.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 19, 2001, at 2 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home with the Rev. Jeffrey Cornwell officiating. Burial will follow in the Milton Village Cemetery. Memorials in Mr. North's memory may be made to either the American Cancer Society, New England Division, 11 Loomis Street, Montpelier, VT 05602-3021, or to the Visiting Nurse Association, Home Care Program, 1110 Prim Road, Colchester, VT 05446. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, April 18 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home located at 237 Route 7 South in Milton.

LEONA "BILLIE" GOVER PHILLIPS

SHELDON -- Leona G. Phillips, 90, passed away Easter Sunday, April 15, 2001, at Verdelle Village ECF in St. Albans. She was born in Bakersfield, Vt., Feb. 2, 1911, the daughter of the late Herbert H. and Harriet (Shanley) Gover. At an early age she resided in Sheldon with a beloved aunt and uncle, the late Mark and Lena Stephenson. She was the widow of Thomas J. Phillips who died April 1, 1993.

Mrs. Phillips attended Sheldon Schools and what was then the Sheldon High School and graduated from Vermont Academy and the University of Vermont. After graduating from UVM she went to North Bennington, Vt. where she taught school for eight years. A resident of Sheldon for most of her life, she resumed teaching in the Sheldon School System, where she served in the capacity of Principal and First Grade Teacher until her retirement in 1974. Her love of children induced her to continue as a substitute teacher for area towns.

Mrs. Phillips was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma International - Zeta Chapter. Governor Johnson appointed her to the Vermont State Board of Education, the first teacher in service to serve on the board. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Sheldon.

Survivors include her son and his wife, Gary and Marsha Phillips of Montgomery Center; a beloved grandson, Mark and his wife Dawn Phillips of Milton; three great grandchildren, Taylor, Chayce and Brooke Phllips of Milton, and several cousins and dear friends. In addition to her husband Thomas, she was predeceased by her parents and a brother, Harland Gover.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel. There will be no calling hours. Interment will be later in the family lot in Sheldon Village Cemetery. Friends planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, VT 05478. Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Alban.

CAROL ANN THORNTON

ALBURG -- Mrs. Carol Ann Thornton, age 58, wife of James Thornton, died Easter Sunday, April 15, 2001, at her home following an extended illness. Carol was born in St. Albans Feb. 8, 1943, daughter of the late Arnold and Irene (Thibault) Lewis. She was a communicant of St. Amadeus Church.

Besides her husband James of Alburg, she is survived by her ten children and their spouses, Judy and Scott Machia of St. Albans, Tammy and Tracy Fuller of Burlington, Wayne and Julie Barratt of Alburg, Brenda and Michael Begnoche of Swanton, Arnold and Lori Barratt of Alburg, Juan and Susan Moreno of Riceville, Tenn., James Moreno of New York, Richard Page and his civil union partner Lee Donahue of Winooski, William Page of Athens, Va., Heather Thornton of Alburg, 15 grandchildren, three great grandchildren, four sisters Wanda Guyette of St. Albans, Barbara Soucy of Manchester, N.H., . Joan Hall of Trenton, N.J., Jeanne Hayden and her friend James Remillard of St. Albans, a brother James and his wife Donna Lewis of St. Albans, a sister-in-law Pat and her husband Rodney Joyal of Burlington, a sister-in-law Carol Lewis of Manchester, N.H., several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husbands Wayne Barratt in 1966, Richard Page in 1980, two sisters, Shirley Fregeau and Dorothy Fregeau, and her brother Arnold Lewis, Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 20, 2001, in the Brady & Levesque Chapel. Friends may call at the funeral home, 86 South Main St., St. Albans from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

CHARLES W. "MIKE" BOOMHOWER

ST. ALBANS/TICONDEROGA, N.Y. -- Mr. Charles W. "Mike" Boomhower, age 85, died Easter Sunday morning, April 15, 2001, at his home in Ticonderoga, with his loving family at his side.

He was born in St. Albans May 21, 1915, son of the late Charles and Carrie (Prouty) Boomhower. Following high school he joined the U.S. Navy and served until 1945. After discharge he was employed by General Electric and retired from G.E. in 1980. He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts in Ticonderoga.

He is survived by his wife Lillian C. (Brady) of Ticonderoga, daughters, Joanne and her husband Alvin Hunter of Magnolia, Texas, Cynthia and her husband Bill Raschke of Pittsboro, N.C., son, John Parker of Alburg, sisters Virginia L'Ecuyer of East Alburg, Betty Giroux of Swanton, Barbara Mott of Plattsburg, brothers, Darwin "Pat" Boomhower of Clearwater, Fla., Ronald Boomhower of Parachute, Colo., several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Brady & Levesque Chapel. Friends may call at the funeral home, 86 South Main St.. from 7 to 9 Monday evening. Interment will be in the Boomhower family lot in St. Albans Bay Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

LEE JORDAN MILLER

ALBURG -- Lee Jordan Miller, 89, of Alburg, Vt., passed away on Thursday, April 12, 2001, at the Verdelle Village in St. Albans, Vt.

He was born in Montgomery, Vt. on April 27, 1911, the son of the late Olin and Alma J. (Sweet) Miller. He is also predeceased by his daughter, Sharon Lee Miller in 1945, and his brother-in-law, Kenneth Terwilliger in 1981, and by his brother, Charles Miller in 2000.

He attended schools in North Troy, Newport Center, and Newport, Vt. He graduated from Newport High School, Class of 1933. On June 14, 1942 he married Lillian B. Sanborn of Portland, Maine.

He served in the Army during WWII, in European-African Theater, in the Headquarters 2nd Battalion, 339th infantry, 85th Division.

He worked as a meat specialist for Columbia Markets, First National, A&P Stores and Oakhurst Dairy in Maine for 45 years. In 1973 he retired to Cape Canaveral, Fla., and worked with the Goodwill organization, repairing items for them. In 1979 he returned to Fairfield, Vt. and lived with his sister, Ruth Judd and her husband Roy, until Mr. Judd's retirement and then he resided at Upper Welden Villa in St. Albans, Vt. until ill health, whereupon he made his home at the Verdelle Village in St. Albans, Vt.

He was a member of the Jay Peak Post #28 of the American Legion in North Troy, Vt. where he held a life membership.

He is survived by his children, Patti Sanville of Danville, Maine, Donald and Miriam Miller of Oxford, Maine, Karen Littleton of Brooklyn, N.Y., Nancy Miller of Portland, Maine, Robert Miller of Pensacola, Fla., a stepson, Kenneth Sanborn of Long Island, N.Y., a sister, Pauline Terwilliger of Fairfax, Vt., Ruth Judd and her husband Roy of Alburg, Vt., a sister-in-law, Helen Miller of North Troy, Vt., by his special nieces, Tammy Dee Ryan of Fletcher, Vt., Debbie Place Bolito of Middlesex, Vt., Karleen Magnant of Franklin, Vt., and Dianne Rounds of Essex Jct., Vt.; by 12 grandchildren and several great grandchildren and by many friends.

Graveside services will be held later in the spring in the Newport Center Cemetery, Newport, Vt.

His sisters, Ruth and Pauline wish to express their sincere thanks to the staff at Verdelle Village for their wonderful care of their brother.

Those who wish may send contributions in his memory to either the Jay Peak Post #28 of the American Legion, c/o Walter Smith, Adj., 254 Dominion Ave., North Troy, VT 05859, or to the Activities Programs, Verdelle Village Care Facility, 596 Sheldon Road, St. Albans, VT.

RAYMOND M. HART

MONTGOMERY CTR./NO. TROY -- Raymond M. Hart, age 93, died Wednesday evening, April 11, 2001, at the Bel-Aire Nursing Home in Newport following a long illness.

He was born in Montgomery Center Nov. 10, 1907, the son of the late Almon and Jessie (Bonnette) Hart.

Raymond had been a resident of Montgomery and No. Troy most of his life. He was employed at the plywood company in No. Troy for many years and was a self-employed truck driver for several years, retiring in 1970. Following his retirement Raymond was a watchman at Starr Transportation.

He is survived by his wife Bertha (Godin) Hart; one son Raymond Hart of Warner-Robbins, Ga., two daughters, Gloria & Maurice Vincent of No. Troy, Virginia & Charles Drown of Newport Center; one sister, Audrey Spears of Enosburg Falls; seven grandsons, Danny and Doug Hart, Steven, Brian, Dennis & Chris Vincent, Chuck Drown; 10 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews; a special friend, John Perkins and his family of Niva, Mo. He is predeceased by a brother, Max P. Hart; two sisters, Beatrice Deuso, Vila Paronto.

Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 11 a.m. at the Spears Funeral Home on Dickinson Ave. in Enosburg Falls with Rev. Gerald Leclerc officiating. Friends may call on the family Sunday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Funeral Home.

Burial will be later this spring in St. Isidore's Cemetery in Montgomery Center.
