HENRY THOMAS TULIP, M.D.

MAQUAM SHORE, SWANTON -- Henry Thomas Tulip, M.D., passed away on Friday, Oct. 22, at the Northwestern Medical Center. He died as he lived, in peace, surrounded by members of his family, in a setting he loved, attended for with utmost care by the community of which he was a member for so many years.

Dr. Tulip was born in Salem, N.Y. on Jan. 1, 1923, to George Thomas and Mary (Roche) Tulip. He grew up in Salem with his younger sisters Dorothy (Sis) Costello, now of Arlington Heights, Ill., and Mary Elizabeth (Betty), now deceased. He finished his undergraduate studies with honors at the University of Vermont in 1944. He graduated from UVM Medical School, also with honors, in 1947, before interning and completing his residency in Urological Surgery in Burlington in 1951.

During World War II he served as a corporal in the U.S. Army. He did tour of duty in the Air Force during the Korean conflict as a captain, stationed predominantly in Alaska. Recently he reached the rank of colonel in the Vermont State Guard.

After meeting Madalyn Hunt in 1944, 60 years ago, they were married in 1949. After brief stays in Anchorage, Alaska and Shrevesport, La., they established their permanent home in the Franklin County in 1954. Madalyn and Henry celebrated their 55th anniversary in August.

On one level, Dr. Tulip, Doc, was a complex man, of many parts. He was passionate about so many things:

* His Family: Madalyn and Henry lovingly raised six children: Mary (Amabile) of Chesapeake, Va.; Kathleen (Johnson) of Fargo, ND; Elizabeth of Roque Bluffs, Maine; Deborah (McCarthy) of Swanton, Vt.; Daniel of Anchorage, AK; and Thomas of Andover, Mass. He took great joy from his 16 grandchildren.

* His Patients and his Profession: He gave unstintingly to those in his care, a wide network who formed his second family. He was an urologist, who practiced in St. Albans for 35 years before retiring in 1989. He had a passion for caring for and supporting his patients and professional organizations: UVM medical admissions, New England AUA, Northwestern Medical volunteers, Missisquoi Wildlife Refuge

* His Church: Henry was a devoted Catholic and member of the St. Mary's parish community. He unfailingly attended mass and received communion. He served on many parish councils over the years, chairing the Liturgy Committee and working at many Bereavement luncheons. He was an altar server and a lector at funerals.

* Fishing & Hunting: He was an outdoorsman all his life. He hunted deer in Peru, Vt. for many years. He fished with friends and family across the continent. He spent many happy hours on Lac Perdue, Quebec, was thankful for his time with Beth and Dana at Vicker's pools on the Marimachi River in New Brunswick, and recently discovered the Kasilof River in Alaska with Dan and family.

* Cattle breeding: With his great friend, Murray Dunsmore, M.D., he bred prizewinning Ayrshire cattle, traveling to the Scots Highland to find new livestock. He owned and operated a farm in Georgia for 13 years.

* Youth sports: Particularly in his retirement, Doc was a steadfast supporter of BFA sports. He worked with the hockey, football and baseball programs and was a fixture at games. He has been a member of Bobwhite hockey teams for many years, developing special relationships with coaches Red Gendron and Toby Ducolon and their extended staffs. His most important connection was with the players. In recognition of this connection, the BFA holiday hockey tournament has been named his honor.

On a deeper level, Dr. Tulip was a simple man, focused on caring for those around him. He was a calming influence to those in turmoil, be they his family or his patients. He provided strength to those who needed resolve and an ear to those who needed to be heard. To the very end, he taught by word and action. Henry Tulip loved, Madalyn most, and the rest of us so well. For this, he received much love in return and he will be long remembered with tenderness by those privileged to have known him.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, at 10 a.m. from St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Fairfield Street, St. Albans City. Father Leonidas B. Laroche will be the celebrant and The Reverend Mr. John R. Rixon the homilist. Interment will follow in the Tulip family lot in St. Mary's Cemetery in Swanton. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton on today, Oct. 25, 2004, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
