RUTH MARIE FITZGERALD

ALBURG, Vt. / ROUSES POINT, N.Y. -- Ruth Marie Fitzgerald, 72, a long time Alburg resident, died early Thursday morning, Oct. 7, 2004, in the Cedar Hedge Nursing Facility in Rouses Point, N.Y.

Born in Isle La Motte, Vt., March 1, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Florence (Ero) Baker. She attended schools in Isle La Motte and on, Nov. 19, 1951, married Bernard Fitzgerald who predeceased her on Dec. 13, 1985.

A homemaker and mother Ruth also loved things that were of an artistic nature and loved painting and sewing. She was a member of St. Amadeus Roman Catholic Church and in earlier years belonged to the American Legion, Creller-Landon Post 60 Auxiliary in Alburg.

Ruth leaves two sons and their wives, Lawrence C. and Susan Fitzgerald of Swanton and Stephen J. and Lydia Fitzgerald of Highgate Center; four daughters, Debra L. Bourgeois and her companion George Shedrick, Karen M. Fitzgerald and companion Mark Dungey, Gayle E. Brown and husband Kenneth and Bernadette Creller and husband Jon all of Alburg; four brothers, William Baker and his wife Ina of Plattsburgh, N.Y., Richard Baker and wife, Marilee of Champlain, N.Y., Maurice Baker of Milton and his companion Paulette Bennis, and Robert Baker and wife Mary of Champlain, N.Y.; one sister, Rita Jarvis and her husband Gerald of Milton; 11 grandchildren, Michael Bourgeois of Swanton, Matthew Bourgeois of Burlington, Melissa Benjamin and Samantha Fitzgerald of Swanton, Kenneth and Joshua Deyo of Alburg, Stephen and Amber Fitzgerald of Highgate Center, Phillip and Kristopher Brown of Alburg and Katie Creller of Alburg; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, Ruth was predeceased by a granddaughter, Kristi Lynn Fitzgerald; a son-in-law, Albert Bourgeois; and a sister, Doris Bourgeois.

There will be no public calling hours. A public funeral service will be held Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, at 11 a.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton. Father Maurice U. Boucher, SSE will officiate. Interment will follow in the Fitzgerald family lot in St. Amadeus Cemetery Alburg.

Gifts in Ruth's memory may be made to the Alburg Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 23, Alburg, Vt. 05440.

EDNA MAY (MOTT) JOHNSTON

SWANTON -- Edna May (Mott) Johnston, 63, a resident of this community for most of her lifetime, died early Sunday morning, Oct. 3, 2004, in her South River Street home surrounded by the family she so loved.

Born in Alburg, Oct. 15, 1940, she was the daughter of the late George N. and Flora A. (Greenia) Mott. She attended Swanton schools and graduated from Swanton High School. She was employed for nearly 30 years at the former Union Carbide Corporation.

Edna was predeceased by her husband and companion of 21 years, Joseph Loyer on June 7, 2000, and by a son, Robert Roger Johnston on Nov. 10, 2001.

She is survived by three sons and their wives, Kevin and Diane Johnston and Steven and Holly Johnston all of West Swanton and Ronald and Shelly Johnston of Highgate; three brothers, David "Skookie" Mott and his wife Tina, Robert Mott and his wife Ann and George Mott all of Swanton; 10 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, at 11 a.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton Village. The Reverend Donavee Copenhaver, pastor of the Missisquoi River Charge of the United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will take place later in the family lot in Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

JOHN W. KING

SWANTON -- John W. King, 65, a resident of the Comstock Road in Swanton Town, died early Monday morning, Oct. 4, 2004, in the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans City, in his wife's loving arms following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in North Bennington, Aug. 17, 1939, he was the son of the late Seth W. and Florence A. (Sausville) King. He received his education in Bennington schools.

John married Loretta M. Young at Christ the King Church in Rutland on July 15, 1991, with Father Richard W. Tinney officiating. He was previously married to the former Marie Boden, who died Aug. 14, 1989.

For 18 years John was employed as a drug and alcohol counselor at Serenity House in Wallingford. He was a member of both the Vermont National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors and attended certification courses at the University of Vermont and Rutgers University. Following retirement he volunteered at the Harbor Club in St. Albans, where he touched many lives.

Survivors include his wife Loretta King of Swanton, and her sons who loved John as a father, Michael, Kevin and John Cline; five stepchildren, from his first marriage, Donna Lawler, Alice Monica, Marie Butler, George Cesarski and Edward Souther; four sisters, Donna A. Andrews of Jeffersonville, Ga., Marlene P. Cashes of Dudley, Mass., Linda Hurley of Shaftsbury and Mary A. Lane of Cambridge, N.Y.; an aunt, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Seth D. King and Richard J. King.

Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton on Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, from 7 to 9 p.m. Committal Services will take place Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at 1 p.m. at Grandview Cemetery in North Bennington.

John had a great love for animals, especially his pets Jesse, Missy, Pete and Kitty. Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the Franklin County Humane Society, 30 Sunset Meadows, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.

SUZANNE MARIE (BEAULIEU) BECHARD

SWANTON / BURLINGTON -- Suzanne Marie (Beaulieu) Bechard, 89, died peacefully in her sleep Friday evening, Oct. 1, 2004, in the Birchwood Terrace Health Care Center in Burlington surrounded by family.

Suzanne was born in Highgate Center, Sept. 16, 1915, the daughter of the late Arthur and Roseanna (Bouchard) Beaulieu. She graduated from Highgate High School and attended college in Sainte Jean sur Richelieu, Quebec Canada. On Nov. 6, 1938, she married Gerard Oliver Bechard, who predeceased her on April 18, 1993.

She is survived by a daughter, Jeanne Crane of Medina, N.Y.; her sons, Donald (Linda Orient) Bechard of Avon Lake, Ohio and Marc (Linda) Bechard of St. Albans Bay; grandchildren, Kelly (Curt) Follman, Michael (Chris) Crane, Kiersten (Ron) Hilditch, Michele (John) Fleming, Todd (Jody) Bechard, Colin (Kelly) Bechard, Christine (Tim) Trombley and Marc (Lisa) Bechard; and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by 16 brothers and sisters, and is survived by several sisters-in-law, and by her sister, Madeleine Nolin of Burlington, who has been her caretaker and for which the family is deeply appreciative.

Suzanne was a long time parishioner of The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary where she belonged to the parish Ladies of St. Anne and Altar Society. She was also a member of the Swanton Home-Dem Group and the St. Albans Autonoe Club.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, at 11:30 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada Street, Swanton. Father John J. Meagher, SSE will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in the Bechard family lot in St. Louis Cemetery, Lamkin Street, Highgate Center. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton on Wednesday morning from 9 to 11 a.m.

HAROLD H. LITTLEFIELD JR.

MILTON -- Harold H. Littlefield Jr., 74, died Friday evening, Oct. 1, 2004, following a long illness. Harold was born in Colchester, on July 7, 1930, the son of Harold and Cora (Newton) Littlefield.

He was a graduate of the Milton High School Class of 1948, and had been self-employed as a dairy farmer in Milton. On Aug. 21, 1951, he married Beverly Bullock in the United Methodist Church Parsonage in Colchester. He enjoyed and was a proud member of the Seneca Lodge F&AM 40 in Milton, of the Past Masters Assoc., of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rites and was a 32nd Degree Masons.

Harold is survived by his wife Beverly; by his children, Joan Desorda and her husband Alan of South Hero, Allen Littlefield and his wife Mary of Schertz, Texas; by his grandchildren Crystal Duggins, and Bradley and Breton Littlefield; and by his great-granddaughter, Julie Duggins. He is also survived by his brother Charles Littlefield and his wife Nancy of Milton, his brothers-in-law Eugene Towne of Milton, David Bullock and his wife Linda of Largo, Fla., and Lillian Baxter and Madeline Salamon of Burlington; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Arlene Towne in 2003.

A Masonic Service was held today, Oct. 4, 2004, at 11 a.m. in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton. Burial followed in the Milton Village Cemetery. Visiting hours were held Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home.

CLAUDE HENRY BOMBARDIER

SWANTON -- Claude Henry Bombardier, 72, a lifelong Grand Avenue resident, died unexpectedly early Saturday morning, Oct. 2, 2004.

Born at home in Swanton on Nov. 7, 1931, he was the son of the late Emery and Yvonne (Thibert) Bombardier. He attended St. Anne's Academy and on Jan. 10, 1959, married the former Theresa Marguerite Trombly, who predeceased him, May 8, 2003.

For most of his working life Claude was associated as a machinist for Brown's Foundry retiring in 2001. Earlier he had also worked 12 years for the former Skeels and Weedman Grain Company on Platt Street in Swanton Village. Most recently he was working as a driver for the Northwest Public Transit Services, a division of the Champlain Valley Agency on Aging.

Claude and his wife Theresa were avid campers spending nearly 30 summers at the Georgia Campground. He was also well known throughout the area for his ability to repair hydraulic jacks. A lifelong parishioner of The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, he was member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Edmund of Canterbury Council 7669.

Claude leaves his son, Mark Bombardier and his wife Jennifer of Swanton and his daughter, Susan Morris, her husband Roger and their two children, Kristine and Shawn all of Fairfield. Also surviving are his brother, Come Bombardier and his wife Joyce of Swanton; four sisters and their spouses, Antonia and Francis Berthiaume of Swanton, Raymonde and Henry Choiniere of Highgate Center, Gemma and Gilbert Boucher of Highgate Center and Colette and Roger Perrault of Essex Junction. He also leaves a close special friend, Anna Taylor Caleb of Enosburg Falls, as well as many nieces and nephews.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at 10 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada Street, Swanton Village. Father Maurice U. Boucher, SSE will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in the Bombardier family lot in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton today, Oct. 4, 2004, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Gifts in Claude's memory may be made in the form of Masses.

THERESA C. ROWLEY

MILTON -- Theresa C. Rowley, 84, died Saturday evening, Oct. 2, 2004, surrounded by her loving family, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. Theresa was born in Newton Center, Mass. on Mothers Day, May 9, 1920, the daughter of Emidio and Josephine (Pasquantonia) Caruso.

She graduated from the Framingham State Teachers College in 1942. She began her career in teaching at Towne's corner one room schoolhouse in Milton.

On Jan. 2, 1947, she married Lawrence Rowley in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton Center, Mass. They were married for 50 years. Lawrence predeceased her in 1997. She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Milton.

Theresa is survived by her children, Kathleen Renaud and her husband Roland, Margaret Rowley, Susan Brown, Helen Rowley, Mary Jo Bickford and her husband, Earl, and Nancy Rowley. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Joanne Farrell and her husband, Keith Cookson, Michael Farrell, Audrey Bickford, Collyn Brown, Gaelan Brown and his wife, Jasna and her great-grandchild, Aleksandar Brown; and by many nieces and nephews and extended family members.

She was predeceased by her sisters, Rose McGrath, Louise Sostillio and Anantonia Caruso.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at 11 a.m. in St. Ann's Catholic Church in Milton. Burial will follow in St. Ann's Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fletcher Allen Health Care Emergency Room Staff, c/o Pam Perrotte, ED FAHC, 111 Colchester, Ave., Burlington, Vt. 05401, in appreciation to the kindness shown to Theresa.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, Oct. 7, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton.

MARY C. PANARELLA

HENNIKER - Mary C. Panarella, 70, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at her home. She was born in Swanton, Vt., the daughter of William and Laura (Ladue) Lafar.

She was a machine operator for C-M Corp. wire manufacturers in Connecticut before her retirement. She was a Girl Scout leader and enjoyed sewing, knitting and photography.

She is survived by her husband, Alfred Panarella of Henniker; a son, Jasper Rushford of Pittsfield, Mass.; four daughters, Claire Kelley of Putnam, Conn., Mae Hawkins of Gilmanton, Jacqueline Morschat of Pittsfield and Juliette Dorval of Brooklyn, Conn.; one brother, Evey Lafar of Swanton, Vt.; four sisters, Arlene Vincelette, Donna Lafar and Agnes Gagne, all of Swanton, and Patricia Draper of Manchester, Conn.; 13 grandchildren, including Jennifer Calley of Manchester, for whom Mary was legal guardian; 18 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A calling hour was held Sunday, Nov. 28, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Bennett Funeral Home, 209 North Main St., Concord. A funeral service followed at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Concord Regional Visiting Nurse Association’s Hospice House, P.O. Box 1797, Concord, N.H. 03302-1797.

JOSEPH H. BARCH

MILTON -- Joseph H. Barch, 71, died Nov. 27, 2004, in St. Mary’s Hospital in Langhorne, Pa. after a sudden illness. Joe was born Feb. 13, 1933, in Woburn, Mass., the son of the late Joseph and Catherine (Cullivan) Barch.

He graduated from Woburn High School in 1950 and served four years in the army, seeing action in the Korean conflict. He returned to the United States in 1954 and earned an associates degree from Boston University. He began work at Hamilton Standard in Windsor Locks, Conn. where he met his wife of 37 years, the late Margaret (Peg Murphy) Barch. They were married on Aug. 16, 1958, in St. Matthew Catholic Church in Indian Orchard, Mass. He held subsequent positions at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass., General Electric in Burlington, Vt. / Syracuse, N.Y. and his own company Barch General Contracting in Milton, Vt. where he has lived with his family for the last 38 years.

He is best remembered for his gregarious personality, unrelenting affinity for his hard work, and most importantly, his sense of family. Fond memories were made for his children in the house he built in Milton. His giving nature extended well beyond his family and into the community where he was ready to help anyone regardless of the time, effort, or distance required. He touched many lives as a volunteer EMT, religious educator, coach and active community member. His legacy as a father, mentor and friend will be felt for generations.

He is survived by his three sons and their wives, Joseph and Colleen Barch of Jericho, Vt., David and Melani Barch of Burlington, Vt., James and Betti Barch of Danville, N.H.; four daughters and their husbands, Marykate and Larry Johnson of Richboro, Pa., Sheila and Barry Evans of Corvallis, OR, Margaret and Matthew Pearsall of Fayston, Vt., and Kacey and Penn Ruderman of East Boston, Mass.; 12 grandchildren, David, Colin, Eileen, Brendan, Christopher, Melissa, Elizabeth, Erin, Kaegan, Hannah, Samuel and Margaret; four brothers, William Barch of Woburn, Mass., Richard Barch of Manhattan Beach, Calif., Dan Barch of Andover, Mass., Robert Barch of Woburn, Mass.; one sister, Kathleen Vincent of North Hampton, Mass.; and his companion of eight years, Jackie Bilodeau of Milton.

Joe is also survived by his brother-in-law Joe Murphy of Indian Orchard, Mass.; his sister-in-law Claire Boland of Springfield, Mass. and by several nieces and nephews.

His brother-in-law, John Murphy, predeceased him.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 6to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, at Minor’s Funeral Home on Route 7 in Milton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, Dec. 2, at 10 a.m. in St. Ann’s Church on Main Street in Milton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Catholic Charities of Vermont, 351 North Avenue Burlington, Vt. 05401.

EDOUARD TARDIF

SWANTON -- Mr. Edouard Tardif, 93, a longtime resident of the Highgate Road in the Town of Swanton, died early Saturday morning, Nov. 27, 2004, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Julienne and John Hubbard.

Born in Lyster, Quebec Canada on March 5, 1911, he was the son of the late Honore and Amanda (Therrien) Tardif. He attended schools in Canada and on Aug. 24, 1946, was married to the former Cecile Routhier, who predeceased him on June 16, 1992.

A native of Canada Mr. Tardif came to the United States in 1959 and along with his family owned and operated a dairy farm for many years and was a member of the Franklin-Grand Isle Counties National Farmers Organization. He was a devoted parishioner of The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and a life member of the Nativity Parish Holy Name Society.

He leaves a daughter Julienne T. Hubbard and her husband John of Swanton and three sons, Raymond E. Tardif and his wife Julia (Daigle) also of Swanton, Roger E. Tardif and his wife Agnes (McSherry) of Isle La Motte and Andre Tardif of Rutland; nine grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and his parents Mr. Tardif was predeceased by 15 brothers and sisters.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada Street, Swanton. Longtime family friend and neighbor, Father Marcel Rainville, SSE from the Office of Campus Ministry at St. Michael's College will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in the Tardif family lot in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Gifts in Mr. Tardif's memory may be made to the Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.
