HENRY DAVID VAN DINE

GRAND ISLE — Henry David Van Dine, 60, of Pearl Street died peacefully Tuesday morning, Dec. 21, 2004, at his home in Grand Isle in the presence of his loving family. Henry was born Jan. 10, 1944, in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of Wilbur H. and Dorothy A. Farnum Van Dine.

He graduated from Susquehanna University with a B.A. in Philosophy. On June 26, 1965, he married Connie Coman in Sweet Air, Md. Hank was a teacher in the Arlington, school system for nine years. His lifelong passion for plants, architecture and nature drew him into the nursery business. For over 25 years he strove to perfect his three successful nursery businesses. In more recent years, he established a wholesale growing operation on his well-maintained property in Grand Isle.

For the last three and a half years he worked in the non-profit affordable housing field. At the time of his death he was an employee of the Lake Champlain Housing Corporation. Hank's hobbies included biking with his beloved wife Connie, snowshoeing with his wonderful sons and precious grandsons and camping at many state parks. He spent much of his spare time puttering around his farmstead, creating beauty and works of art. He often found great enjoyment atop a well running diesel. A master craftsman, his incredible carpentry skills enabled him to build a house for his family, jack up a barn and lots of projects in between. Hank was a large-hearted, enthusiastic man who volunteered his time to many charitable organizations over the years, as well as helping anyone in need. His giving was generous and unconditional. He will be deeply missed by his loving family and many, many friends. He died as he lived in great love, grace and dignity.

Hank is survived by his wife Connie of Grand Isle; and their children, David Van Dine of Grand Isle, and Justin Van Dine and his wife Gwen and their children, Forest and Cody of West Burke; his brother, Peter Van Dine and wife Rebecca of Doylestown, Pa.; and his two sisters, Judy Van Dine of Bristol, Maine, and Marion Robertson of Westbury, N.Y.; his father- in-law, Eugene C. Coman of Perryville, Md.; his sisters-in-law and their spouses, Judy and Bill Thode of Harleysville, Pa., Barbara and Tony Mantegna of Middle River, Pa., Elizabeth and Dick Phillips of Ellicott City, Md., Eugene Coman Jr. of Baltimore, Md., and Nancy and Brian Hogan of Freeland, Md.; as well as several nieces, nephews, and friends.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at 3 p.m. in the South Hero Congregational Church on South Street in South Hero.

Arrangements are by the Minor Funeral Home of Milton.

PATRICIA C. NILES

FAIRFIELD -- Patricia C. Niles, 70, a resident of this area for most of her lifetime, passed away Monday morning at FAHC in Burlington following a lengthy illness. She was born in Enosburg on Feb. 11, 1934, the daughter of the late Gordon W. and Marguerite (Paradee) Boomhower. She was the widow of Elwin D. Niles, who died Oct. 26, 2000.

Pat was a Licensed Practical Nurse and a graduate of the Fanny Allen School of Nursing. She worked for many years at Verdelle Village Nursing Home in St. Albans. She enjoyed her family, reading, and researching genealogy.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Patricia and Jeff Combs of Montgomery, and Cheryl and Roland Laviolette of East Fairfield; four brothers, Richard Boomhower of Hinesburg, Gordon A. "Sonny" Boomhower and his wife, Carol, of Fairfield, George Boomhower and his wife, Linda, of Essex, and Jack Boomhower and his wife, Shelly, of Jericho; two sisters, Peggy Lawyer and her husband, Thomas, of Bakersfield and Gloria Kane of Fairfield. She also leaves three grandchildren, Jeffrey, Joshua and Jennifer Combs; and a great-granddaughter, Destiny; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a son, Ernest D. Niles in 1988; and two sisters, Mabel Greene and Arieta St. Pierre.

Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of Pat's family. Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St. Albans.

PHILIP G. LOCKE

MORRISVILLE -- Philip Gaylord Locke, 84, of Morrisville, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004 at Copley Hospital in Morrisville, with his loving family by his side following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Waterville on Sept. 14, 1920, son of the late Edwin B. and Jennie (Codding) Locke.

Philip attended Waterville schools and graduated from Cambridge High School, class of 1938. He was co-owner of Locke Brothers Construction and Oar and Paddle Co. Together with his wife Gyneth, they owned and managed the store in Waterville and then owned and ran the Locke Haven Nursing Home in Jeffersonville, where they resided for 32 years. He also worked at Vermont Electric Coop for 26 years.

Philip was a lifetime member of the Waterville Union Church, a 60-year member of the Masonic Lodge of Johnson, and avid hunter and gardener. He was also a master craftsman and woodworker, proudly crafting numerous pieces for his family. He was predeceased by his first wife of 51 years, Gyneth Hawley; and his eight brothers and two sisters, of which he was the youngest.

Philip is survived by his wife and loving companion of 9 ½ years, Carol Bell Taylor Locke; his three children, Mildred Piper and her husband, Carlton, of Morrisville, Lynwood and his wife, Marviline, of Cullman, and Edwin and his wife, Janet, of Morrisville; along with six grandchildren and their spouses, Melanie and David Carmichael, Jay and Sue Thomas, Shane and Karen Locke, Stacy and James Ferland, Marley and Eric Landis, and Dena and Randall York; and 10 great-grandchildren. Philip is also survived by Carol’s five children, Phyllis and Greg Edwards, Frank Taylor, Bruce Taylor, Cheryl and James Beckwith, and Diane and Tom O’Neil, and their families; along with many nieces and nephews.

Philip was very involved with and proud of his family and their accomplishments.

There will be no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005, in Waterville Union Church in Waterville with Reverend Jan Rathbun officiating. Inurnment will be in the family lot in Mountain View Cemetery, Waterville in the spring at the convenience of the family.

PAULINE A. BROWN

ST. ALBANS BAY -- Mrs. Pauline E. Brown, 90, a longtime area resident, passed away Thursday evening, Dec. 23, 2004, at her home on Hathaway Point following a long illness. She was born in Schenectady, N.Y. on Jan. 7, 1914, the daughter of the late William O. and Esther A. (Miner) Weis. She was the widow of Clarence Brown who died in 1990.

Pauline was a graduate of the University of Vermont and was an elementary schoolteacher in North Troy, Vt. until her enlistment in the military. She was a veteran of World War II and a member of Green Mountain Post 1, American Legion, Robert E. Glidden Post 758, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Owl Club, and the Lady Shriners of Mt. Sinai Temple 3.

Survivors include two sons, P. Gregory Brown of St. Albans and Gary D. Brown of St. Albans Bay; a brother-in-law and his wife, Abraham and Jean Brown of Enosburg Falls; and a cousin and his wife, Donald E. and Stephanie Miner of St. Albans. Besides her husband Clarence, she was predeceased by a son, C. Irving Brown in 1971; and a sister, Katherine P. Weis in 2004.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, at 11 a.m. from Ohavi Zedek Cemetery on Patchen Road in South Burlington. There will be no visitation.

Friends planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the memorial program at the American Cancer Society, 121 Connor Way, Suite 240, Williston, Vt. 05495-1460.

The Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St. Albans, is assisting the family with arrangements.

MEGAN GLENN FITZGERALD

SCOTTSVILLE, Ky. / ENOSBURG FALLS, Vt. - Megan Glenn Fitzgerald, 23, of Scottsville, died unexpectedly of complications from diabetes on Dec. 13, 2004.

Meg was born in Randolph, Vt. On Sept. 25, 1981, the daughter of Kathy Tillotson and Robert Fitzgerald. Meg attended schools in Enosburg Falls and Kentucky and was a sophomore medical technology student at Western Kentucky University.

Meg leaves her mother and stepfather, Kathy and Tom Bokori of Scottsville; her maternal grandparents, Barney and Martha Tillotson of Enosburg Falls, with whom she shared a steadfast and special bond; her aunt Janet (and Bernard) Marchia, uncle Lee (and Sue) Tillotson, all of Bakersfield; cousins Jackie, Shaun, Leif, Courtney and Jeremy and their spouses and children.

Meg was predeceased by her father, Robert Fitzgerald; and stepfather, Jay Barbeau.

In keeping with her wishes, there will be no services. Because Meg’s college education was so important to her, people who wish to honor her memory are asked to donate to the scholarship fund of your choice, or to the American Diabetes Association.

WINSLOW BOWMAN TOWLE, JR.

WYOMING -- Winslow Bowman Towle, Jr. of Wyoming, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004, in Christiana Care Hospital, Newark. He was 85.

Mr. Towle was born July 15, 1919 in Franklin, Vt., son of the late Winslow Bowman and Floy Gladdis LaGrange Towle.

He graduated from the Vermont State School of Agriculture and retired as manager of Liseter Farm, Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. He was a life member of the National Dairy Shrine Club.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years Anita Towle; three daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and James Dempsey of Brookline, N.H., Gail and Donald Hershey of Mount Joy, Pa. and Joyce and Dennis McDonald of St. Johns, MI; a son and daughter-in-law Larry and Barbara Towle of Wyoming; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two sisters Charlotte Horstmann of Buffalo, N.Y. and Barbara Bartlett of Burlington, Vt.; and many nieces and nephews.

Services were held at the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 West Camden-Wyoming Avenue, Wyoming. Burial was in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Wyoming United Methodist Church missions fund, 112 Broad Street, Wyoming, DE 19934.

RICHARD (DICK) S. KELLEY SR.

RANDOLPH - Richard (Dick) S. Kelley Sr., 60, died unexpectedly Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, at his home. He was born in St. Albans, Aug. 12, 1944, the son of Stuart and Verna (Foster) Kelley.

He was educated in St. Albans schools, graduating from Bellows Free Academy in 1962. He graduated from Vermont Technical College in 1964. He was a senior designer for Dubois and King in Randolph, where he has been employed for 40 years. He has worked on projects in Maine and New Hampshire, as well as most of Vermont cities and towns.

He was Chief of the Randolph Fire Department from 1977 to 1984. He was currently an Assistant Chief. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, plumbing, carpentry, mechanics, electrical, snowmobiling, being at his camp on Norton Pond, and in earlier years skiing, golfing and horseshoes.

He will be remembered for being generous, loving and supportive. He was in the U.S. Navy and served in Vietnam.

Richard married Catherine (Betsy) Dorn in Randolph, Sept. 27, 1969. He leaves his wife of Randolph; his mother of St. Albans; a daughter, Carol Wheatley of Braintree; three sons, Joseph Kelley and William Kelley of Redmond Washington; and a sister, Jean Miller of East Amherst, N.Y.; and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Denise; and a brother, Jeffrey.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 24, at 11 a.m. at the United Church in Randolph. Calling hours will be Thursday, Dec. 23, at the Day Funeral Home from 2 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m., located at 4 Franklin St., Randolph.

Burial will be later in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Randolph.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Randolph Fire Department, Randolph, Vt. 05060.

ARLENE K. DERRY

RICHFORD - Arlene K. Derry, age 80, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

She was born Sept. 20, 1924, in Georgia, the daughter of the late Wesley and Mary (Sweeney) King

Arlene was a life long resident of Franklin County. She enjoyed knitting and cross-stitching. She also enjoyed the outdoors and most of all fishing.

She is survived by her long time companion, Carl Greene of Richford; Carl’s daughter, Stacy Arbuckle and her children, Stewart and Joseph Arbuckle all of Richford. Arlene was predeceased by an infant daughter; and several brothers and sisters.

A graveside service will be held Friday morning, Dec. 24, at 11 a.m. at the Sanderson Corners Cemetery in Fairfax. There will be no visiting hours.

ANNA S. (SWEENEY) BROWNE

MILFORD, N.H. - Anna S. (Sweeney) Browne, 89 of 40 Crosby St., Milford, N.H. died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004, at Harborside Healthcare in Milford. Mrs. Browne was born July 7, 1915, in Enosburg Falls, Vt., daughter of the late Richard and Susan (Smith) Sweeney.

She was the widow of LTC (ret) Randolph M. Browne, who died in 1996. Mrs. Browne worked at the Grain Co. in St. Albans, and at The Bank of New Hampshire (formerly Second National Bank of Nashua) in Nashua, N.H.

She was a graduate of Bellows Free Academy, St. Albans. She was a former member of St. Paul’s United Methodist church and very active in the choir. She was also a member of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, LTC (ret) Christopher R. Browne and his wife In Cha of Nashua N.H., and Jeffrey M. Browne and his wife Laurence of Haines, Alaska and Labellieure, France; two grandchildren, Steven Randolph and Jennifer Ann Browne, both of Nashua; two nephews, David Beauregard of Rouses Point, N.Y., and Donald Brown of Richmond, Va.

There will be a memorial service held in St. Albans in May of 2005.

Heald Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.

EUNICE M. REED

NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. -- Eunice M. Reed, a retired secretary died Thursday at home. She was the wife of the late Fenwick J. Reed.

Born in Providence, a daughter of the late William H. and Margaret A. (Sullivan) Gifford, she has lived in Providence before moving to North Kingstown in 1963.

Mrs. Reed was a secretary for the Stedman and Kazounis Plumbing and Heating of Charlestown for 13 years before retiring earlier this year. She was formerly employed for the former Ladd School for 20 years.

She was a communicant of St. Bernard Church in North Kingstown.

She is survived by one son, Alan G. Reed of North Kingstown; five daughters, Candice A. Green, Pamela S. Merritt, Linda J. Murphy and Suzanne Reed all of North Kingstown and Amy F. Stedman of Charlestown; one brother, Thomas Gifford of Pawtucket and Florida; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late William Gifford and Elizabeth Larkin.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held today (Monday) at 10 a.m. in St. Bernard Church, 410 Tower Hill Road, Wickford. Burial will be in the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.
