LORETTA RAYMOND RENAUDETTE

SWANTON -- Loretta Renaudette, 94, a former longtime resident of Swanton, passed away Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, in the Haven Health Center in St. Albans Town.

She was born in Morrisville on Feb. 25, 1910, the daughter of the late Alfred and Mary (Cooper) Raymond.

Loretta was married on May 5, 1931, in Fairfield to Raymond Renaudette, who predeceased her on Oct. 18, 1984.

She was a member of The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Swanton, and also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 54 years and was a past president of the Swanton American Legion, Post 65 from 1971 –1973. She was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post 758 for 41 years and past president of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Charles DaPrato Post 778 in Swanton from 1966-1969.

Loretta is survived by three sons, Robert Renaudette and his wife, Sandra, of Swanton, Donald Renaudette of Winterhaven, Calif., and Leo Renaudette and his wife, Nancy, of Canaan; one daughter, Betty Renaudette of Swanton; one sister, Pearl Gibson of Enosburg Falls; five grandchildren, Tina Iervolino and her husband, Gerard, of East Hanover, N.J., Tracy Fournier Bruyette and her husband, Donald, of Swanton, Linda Vandervord and her husband, Craig, of St. Albans, Lisa Morse and her husband, Bill, of Jay, Kevin Renaudette of Canaan and his friend, Sonya Mercier, of Derby Line; seven great-grandchildren, Anthony and Lauren Iervolino, Sara and Hilary Fournier, Jessica and Shelby Vandervord and Ryan Morse; a sister-in-law, Barbara Renaudette; and several nieces and nephews.

Loretta was predeceased by her parents; her husband; one brother, Leo Raymond; one sister and brother-in-law, Gertrude and John Coyle; brothers-in-law, Silas, Wilfred, Lauren, Bert and James Renaudette, Ovila Bessette, and George Gibson; sisters-in-law, Alma Renaudette and Elizabeth Draper Trombley.

Loretta’s family would like to thank the Haven Health Center staff and volunteers for the care they gave our Mom. Also a special thanks to Dr. Zsoldos and his wife, Judy.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at 10 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada Street, Swanton. Father John J. Meagher, SSE will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in the Renaudette family lot in St. Louis Roman Catholic Cemetery, Lamkin Street, Highgate Center. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton today, Jan. 31, 2005, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

MARTHA DAVID KENNEDY

MONTGOMERY, Vt. / NAPLES, Fla. -- Martha David Kennedy of Montgomery, Vt. and Naples, Fla., died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, in the Haven Health Center in St. Albans.

Martha was born in Enosburg Falls on Aug. 7, 1917, the daughter of Edward Wandell and Annie (Merrill) David. Martha grew up in Philadelphia, where she graduated from Germantown Friends School in 1935 and Pierce College of Business in 1936. A year later, she met her future husband, Alan Grant Kennedy, of Richford, Vt. They married in 1940 and moved to Burlington, where Grant began a 33-year career in accounting and data control at the University of Vermont. In 1946, when they relocated to Colchester with their three children, Martha began to pursue her lifelong passion for politics and social activism, first completing a BA in Political Science at the University of Vermont in 1952.

An ardent pacifist and advocate of equal rights, Martha was active in many organizations, both in Vermont and Naples, Fla., where she and Grant spent their winters after Grant’s retirement in 1974. These organizations included the League of Women Voters, the Vermont and Naples Councils on World Affairs, the Board of Trustees of Goddard College, the Progressive Party (on which ticket she ran for Vermont Representative in Colchester in 1954), the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Vermont Plan for Action Program, the Experiment in International Living and the Women’s Action Council for Lasting Peace and Freedom.

Topping the list of her important causes were the American Friends Service Committee, the American Civil Liberties Union, Planned Parenthood, the National Urban League and the Grant & Martha Kennedy Fund for Cultural Diversity at the University of Vermont.

In addition to her parents, Martha was predeceased by her husband, A. Grant Kennedy; her brothers, O. Merrill David and Edward W. David, Jr.; and her son-in-law, Peter E. von Conta. She is survived by her three children, David G. Kennedy of Cave Creek, Ariz., Cordelia K. von Conta of Montgomery, Vt., Sarah M. Kennedy of Vancouver, BC, and their extended families. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Mary P. David of Albany, N.Y. and her extended family.

Martha will be remembered for her vision and her impassioned efforts to make the world a more tolerant, inclusive, just and peaceful place. She will be greatly missed.

FRANCIS J. “FRANK” BENSON

ST. ALBANS CITY -- Francis J. “Frank” Benson, 65, of Rugg Street in St. Albans City, died Thursday morning, Jan. 27, 2005, in the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans City.

Born in Richford, Dec. 12, 1939, he was the son of the late Rolland Sr. and Hortense (Ryea) Benson. He grew up in Richford and graduated from Richford High School in the Class of 1957. He faithfully served his country for many years in the United States Navy. He retired from IBM in 1996.

Frank was a longtime member of the American Legion, Green Mountain Post 1, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 758 and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 1090, all of St. Albans.

He is survived by his wife, Sheila Benson, and her four children, Lisa, Brandy, Tammie and Brian, all of St. Albans; three grandchildren, Christopher Muir, Brittany O’Lena and his computer partner, Tyler Pelican; a brother, Rolland M. Benson, Jr. and his wife, Marjorie, of Fletcher, N.C.; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Josie Howard of Swanton; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Evelyn Carol Benson of Panama City, Fla., John C. Riemenschneider of Gales Ferry, Conn., Patricia and Clarence Bruyette of Swanton, Cynthia and Roger Lasnier of Swanton, Jim and Annette Letourneau of St. Albans, and Theresa Letourneau of Swanton; his best friend, Tom Donahue and his wife, Peggy, of St. Albans; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a brother, Floyd O. Benson; a sister, Clara M. Reimenschneider; and brother-in-law, Joseph Letourneau.

At Frank’s request funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

It is requested that in lieu of flowers gifts in Frank’s memory may be made to the American Heart Association, Vermont Affiliate, Inc., P.O. Box 485, Williston, Vt. 05495 or to the American Lung Association of Vermont, 30 Farrell Street, South Burlington, Vt. 05403.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton.

RALPH JANES

ST. ALBANS -- Ralph Janes, 82, passed away at his St. Albans home Friday, Jan. 21, 2005. He was born in Swanton, Jan. 27, 1922, to Paul and Nellie (Frioet) Janes.

Ralph, a retired General Electric machinist, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge No. 100 in Burlington.

Always on the go, Ralph loved to engage in conversations about current events. He also was a car and motorcycle enthusiast.

He was always willing to help with any project thrown his way, only asking for some good coffee in return. Family and friends always knew Ralph was good for a smile and a story.

He was married to the love of his life, Myrth Janes, for 26 years.

Ralph was preceded in death by his sister, Marion Preedom R.N.; and a daughter, Jackie Mazzes.

He is survived by his wife, Myrth of St. Albans; daughters, Karen Haven and Joanne Morrison both of Connecticut, and Julie Janes of New York; a son, Brian Janes of Connecticut; two step-daughters, Rachel Douse and Jackie Douse both of South Burlington; two step-sons, Richard Douse Jr. of Texas and David Douse of North Carolina; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other family and friends.

At Ralph's request, no formal services were held.

JOHN K. BYERS

ESSEX JUNCTION -- John K. Byers, 74, passed away unexpectedly, Monday morning, Jan. 24, 2005, surrounded by his loving family, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

John was born in Wilberforce township, Renfrew County, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, on Oct. 27, 1930, the son of Ephriam and Fay (Sibary) Byers.

He worked in the paper mill in Temiskaming, Quebec and also in the Nickel mines in Thompson, Manitoba before moving to the states and becoming manager of a commercial cleaning company at IBM for many years.

He was a member of the Masons, an avid New York Yankees fan, and enjoyed watching all types of sports, and chatting with the boys about it all.

He is survived by his children Jo-Ann Byers of Jericho, David Byers and his wife Debbie, of Fairfax and Judy Spittle and her husband Joe of Duxbury, and by his grandchildren Ben, Ryan and Haley Spittle. By his cousins in Canada, Gladys Leach, Lois Kleinsteuber, Bob Byers, Harold Byers, Marjorie Ryan and Burt Drynan.

John, “JB” is also survived by his companion of many years, Wanda Preavy, and by her family.

He was predeceased by his former wife Dorothy Lillian Byers in 2001, and his cousins Ken Byers, Barbara Sloan and Don MacIntyre.

Dad enjoyed his Sunday morning routine of visiting with his children, Jo-Ann, and her pets, Sam and Cassie, Judy and her children and his son David, catching up on the recent sports news and current events.

At John's request, burial will be in Canada at the convenience of the family.

John's family would like to thank the wonderful staff for the excellent care given to him during his stay on Shepardson 4 at the Fletcher Allen Health Care and Dr. Joanna Weinstock and her staff at Alder Brook Health Care in Essex.

Arrangements were by the Minor Funeral Home in Milton.

RICHARD O. REVOIR

ENOSBURG FALLS - Richard O. Revoir, age 80, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, at the Haven Health Care Facility in St. Albans.

He was born in Enosburgh Center on April 24, 1924, the son of the late Louis and Helen (Forant) Revoir.

Richard attended school in Enosburgh Center. After working for several area farms in the area, he went to work for Castings Corp. in Brewster, NY. He was married to Ruth Parker Murray in New York, she predeceased him in 1979. Richard returned to Vermont and lived in East Berkshire for a few years. In 1989, he moved to Enosburg Falls to live with his brother, Raymond. After Raymond died in 1997, he went to live with his sister, Lena Benoit, also of Enosburg Falls. He was a member of the Young at Heart Senior Citizens Club of Enosburg Falls. He loved to fish and also playing cards at the card parties held locally.

He is survived by his sisters, Lena Benoit of Enosburg Falls, Elizabeth Sturgeon of Franklin, Mildred Revoir and Connie Rock both of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews throughout Vermont. Besides his wife he was predeceased by a sister, Anna Stanley; and three brothers, Arthur, Francis, and Raymond Revoir.

At Richard’s request, his body has been donated to the University of Vermont College of Medicine for studies. Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Interment will be held at the Missisquoi Cemetery in Enosburg Falls.

The family wishes to thank all of the caregivers at Haven Health Care in St. Albans while he was a resident there.

SHANE PATRICK LANGMAID

LOWELL -- Shane Patrick Langmaid, 16, of Lowell, left this world suddenly on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005. He was born in Morrisville on Oct. 26, 1988, the son of Randy George and Tonya May (Elwood) Langmaid.

Shane loved to work on or ride motorcycles, cars, trucks and dirtbikes. He enjoyed racing snowmobiles with his father last winter. He loved spending time with his grandpa Eldred, his dad Gerry, Kevin and especially his new baby sister, Miriah. Shane was a junior at North Country Union High School in the V.S.A.C. Program and was hoping to go to college to be a mechanic.

Shane is survived by his parents, Randy and Tonya Langmaid of Lowell; his sister, Miriah Langmaid of Lowell; his pals, Thomas R. Andrew A., Tim and Mark P., Nate H. and Jodi R.; his special friend, Hannah R.; and by many grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Shane will be sadly missed by his entire family and many friends. He was predeceased by his younger brother, Ryan, in December of 2003.

A memorial service will be held today, Jan. 27, at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Memorial Chapel, 37 Lake Road, Newport (formerly Bay Street) at 3 p.m. with family and friends sharing moments of reflection. Friends were able to call at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Parking and easy ramped access in the rear of the funeral home.

ISABEL M. COLLINS

SWANTON -- Isabel Collins, 91, native Vermonter and mother of five, died on Jan. 24, at her home in Swanton in the care of her youngest daughter, Colleen Collins Mumley. She had been failing since experiencing two strokes last autumn.

Isabel M. Collins was born into the family of Elizabeth and James Collins of North Hero on Jan. 10, 1914. She married Marvin McBride of South Hero in 1935 and gave birth to her first child, Charlotte, within days of Marvin's death of a systemic infection in a Burlington hospital. She married Lyle A. Collins of St. Albans, a civil engineer, in October 1939. For six years Isabel and Lyle and their expanding family lived in a travel trailer they towed behind a car to engineering projects in New York, Virginia, Texas, Utah and Wyoming. While the family was living in Texas and she was pregnant for her fourth child, Isabel took flying lessons and obtained her pilot's license. In 1945 Isabel and Lyle returned to Vermont with Charlotte, Michael, Vivian and James and settled permanently in the Maquam farmhouse, where Isabel would give birth to their last child, Colleen.

Isabel was a resourceful, no-nonsense mother who was self-taught in a variety of disciplines, such as horticulture and food preservation, tailoring, animal husbandry, and arts and crafts. She cared for the family, house and gardens on her own for periods when Lyle worked engineering jobs in South America and Virginia. Often all of the meats and vegetables, as well as the pickles and ketchup at her dinners, came from her farm and garden.

Lyle Collins died in 1996 at the Swanton farmhouse; Isabel is survived by a sister, Vida Griswold of Grand Isle; two brothers, Marshall, of Valatie, N.Y. and Patrick of South Hero; five children, Charlotte Engelhard of Stratford, Conn.; Michael Collins and his wife, Carol, of Barrington Hills, Ill.; Vivian Hays and her husband, Lewis, of Bellingham, Wash.; James Collins and his wife, Susan, of Brimfield, Mass.; and Colleen Mumley and her husband, James, of Swanton; and by 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Kathleen Marie Mumley in 1976.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to The Hospice Program of Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, Vt. 05478. A memorial service for Isabel will be held at a later date, to be announced.

Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home of St. Albans.

JEANETTE (NEWTON) RUSSELL

SOUTH BURLINGTON — Jeanette (Newton) Russell, 79, of South Burlington, passed away Jan. 25, 2005, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. She was born June 27, 1925, on Shelburne Farms in Shelburne, the daughter of Raymond and Grace (Bevins) Newton.

She was a graduate of Burlington High School and was employed for many years by the New England Telephone Co. She retired from the Chittenden Bank in 1987.

Jean was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, not only to her own grandchildren but also to the children in her neighborhood who delighted her by calling out, “Hi, Grammie Jean!“ whenever they saw her. All babies, even baby animals, held a special place in her heart. She was always happy when her day could include listening to music and visiting with people. She especially enjoyed her many outings with friends and family, which always included a stop for a chocolate “creemie.“

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Kenneth Russell; sons, Craig and his wife, Lynn, of South Burlington, David and his wife, Susan, of Standish, Maine; and daughter Sally of Winooski. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Robert and his partner, Alice, Tyler and his wife, Liz, Christopher and Laura; two sisters, Susan Heins of Essex Junction and Edna Newhall of Kentucky; many nieces and nephews; and special friend and cousin, Kay Towne. She was predeceased by her brothers, Gerald, Wilbur and Roger (who was killed in World War II); sisters, Eleanor and Janice; and a granddaughter, Amy.

The family wishes to especially thank her longtime neighbors on Duval Street, as well as Tara at Reflections, all her friends at Adult Day in Williston, and the community at Starr Farm Nursing Center, where she was lovingly cared for in her last few weeks.

A private family service will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Champlain Valley Agency on Aging, P.O. Box 158, Winooski, Vt. 05404; The Visiting Nurse Association, 1110 Prim Road, Colchester, Vt. 05446; and the Alzheimer's Association, Vermont Chapter, P.O. Box 1139, Montpelier, Vt. 05601.

Arrangements are by Corbin and Palmer Funeral Home, 71 South Union St., Burlington.
