RICHARD POIRIER

ENOSBURG FALLS -- Mr. Richard Poirier, age 78, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at home following a long and courageous battle with cancer, with his loving family at his bedside.

He was born in Bedford, Quebec on Oct. 15, 1926, the son of Harley and Edith (Benjamin) Poirier. He was a graduate of Enosburg Falls High School, and played football on the school team. Richard served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Elizabeth Mackin on Oct. 16, 1948. He was employed at the pulp mill in Sheldon Springs for approximately 32 years.

Richard enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and later his great-grandchildren. He loved their shrieks of laughter and giggles of joy as they played around him. He loved the long summers spent at the family camp on Fairfield Pond. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He took great pleasure in watching the wide variety of birds that frequented the numerous birdfeeders in his backyard, while at the same time fretting over the squirrels that visited the feeders daily. He loved reading, especially westerns. He enjoyed the art of woodworking, and created many delightful pieces for his family and friends.

He was a devoted member of St. John the Baptist Church. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus, and a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion Post 42 in Enosburg, and the Lions Club. He was also an assistant Boy Scout leader for several years.

Richard is survived by his wife of 56 years, Elizabeth; their four children and spouses, David Poirier of Enosburg Falls, Kathleen and Theodore Whitney of Bakersfield, Ann and Alphonse Gratton of Enosburg, and James and Roxanne Poirier of St. Albans. Also, nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews, including very special niece and nephew and spouses, Sandra (Bourbeau) and John Vickers of Cresta, Calif., Daniel and Pearl Gilbert of St. Albans. He also leaves his cousin and spouse Everett and Beverly Poirier of Montgomery, and brother-in-law Edward Bourbeau, of Manchester, N.H., as well as dear friends, Howard Deuso, Shirley Wallace, Janice Geraw, Wayne and Betty Norris, Raymond and Marie Latimer, George and June Guilmette and many other dear friends. He was predeceased by his sister, Beatrice Bourbeau.

Special thanks to Dr. Barbara Grant, Dr. Mark Silverstein, and to all of the very loving, caring and professional staff, especially Richard’s “girls, ” at the NWMC who provided excellent care to Richard during his illness.

Due to Betty continuing to be in the hospital, funeral services will be announced at a later date at the convenience of the family.

With Richard having a great love of children the family wishes to have memorial contributions directed to the Thomas Cook Endowment Fund at the Vermont Children’s Hospital, c/o Children’s Miracle Network, 111 Colchester Ave., Burlington, Vt. 05401.

ALINE MARIE BOUCHARD

FRANKLIN - Aline Marie Bouchard, age 80, passed away Monday morning, Jan. 17, 2005, at the Haven Health Care Facility in St. Albans.

She was born in St. Luc Quebec Canada the daughter of the late Henri and Laur-Anna (Binnette) Payant.

She was a resident of Franklin most of her life and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Franklin. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and will be remembered for the joy she got when holding a new born child.

She is survived by three sons and their wives, Jean Louis and Beverly Bouchard of Wichita Falls, Texas, Omer and Beverly Bouchard of Kermit, Texas and Serge and Betty Bouchard of Wichita Falls, Texas; three daughters, Louise Boisvert and her husband Patrick of Beebe Plain, Claire Bouchard of South Burlington, and Gabrielle Orzell and her husband Robert of Essex; eight grandchildren, Tammy, Danny, Lisa, Gail, Pamela, Amanda, Sally and Peter; five great-grandchildren, Samantha, Skyler, Max, Raeanne and Wyatt; two brothers and their wives, Real and Denise Payant of Iberville, Que., and Jean Marie and Germaine Payant of St. Phillipe, Que.; a sister and her husband, Lorianna and Andre Boucher of Iberville, Que.; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Joseph Bouchard on Feb. 17, 1984; a brother Charles Henri Payant; two half brothers, George and Antoine Tallard.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning, Jan. 21, 2005, at 11 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Franklin with Reverend Bernard Bechard celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Franklin.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.

REGINA LASNIER MARSHALL

SWANTON -- Mrs. Regina Lasnier Marshall, 69, a native of Swanton and a lifelong Franklin County resident, died late Monday evening, Jan. 17, 2005, in Haven Health Center in St. Albans Town.

Born in Swanton on Sept. 26, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Aldias and Mamie (Wells) Lasnier. She graduated from the former Swanton High School and in 1955, was married to Meredith Rupert Marshall who predeceased her on Nov. 7, 1992.

Mrs. Marshall leaves her son, Timothy Marshall and his wife Angie of Sheldon; and three daughters and their spouses, Debbie and William Hemingway, Mary and Jack Button and Donna and Lawrence Lovely all of St. Albans; a brother, Roger Lasnier and his wife Cynthia of Swanton and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Phyllis Lasnier of Highgate Center; 10 grandchildren, Brian and Norma Button, Nathan Lovely, Brenda and Andy Ryea, Angel Hemingway, Stacie Hemingway, Kaitlin Marshall, Skyler Marshall and Precious Chamberlin; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband she was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Rounds; a brother, Rene Lasnier; and a sister, Rita Colgan.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, Jan. 20, 2004, at 11 a.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton Village. Father John J. Meagher, SSE will officiate. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday morning, from 10 a.m. until the hour of the funeral.

Gifts in Mrs. Marshall’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 11 Loomis Street, Montpelier, Vt. 05602-3021.

ELINOR M. MCMILLAN

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. / ST. ALBANS, Vt. -- Elinor M. (Kelleher) McMillan, 86, a native and lifelong resident of Springfield, Mass. died Monday in the Redstone Villa in St. Albans, Vt. She was born on Nov. 26, 1918, the daughter of the late Eugene F. and Irene (Goyette) Kelleher and was a communicant of Our Lady of Hope Church in Springfield, where she was a member of the Women’s Guild.

A graduate of the Mercy Hospital School of Radiology she had been employed for many years as an x-ray Technician at Mercy Hospital, retiring in 1973. She was a member of Our Mother of Sorrows Women’s Auxiliary of the Passionist Retreat League, Division 8 of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, the diocesan Council of Catholic Women and served as a Eucharistic Minister in her church as well as to the patients at Mercy Hospital.

She was predeceased by her husband, James W. McMillan in 1987; and a son, Richard J. McMillan in 1958. Elinor is survived by a son, James E. McMillan and his wife Nancy of Fairfield, Vt.; a sister, Margaret A. Tyrus and her husband John of Wilbraham; two grandchildren, Kevin McMillan and his wife Lisa and Jennifer Bourdeau and her husband Andre; and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held on Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Corridan Funeral Home, 333 Springfield St., Chicopee followed by a Mass in Our Lady of Hope Church at 10. Burial will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Redstone Villa Resident Activity Fund, 7 Forest Hill Dr., St. Albans, Vt., 05478 or to the Alzheimer’s Association, Vermont/New Hampshire Chapter, 10 Ferry St., Suite 427B, Concord, N.H., 03301.

Local arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home and Commemorative Services.

STEPHEN KYLE GOULETTE

RICHFORD -- Stephen Kyle Goulette, 53, of Eastern Avenue, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin.

Born Oct. 17, 1951, in Barre, he was the son of Frank and Beverly (Potter) Goulette. In earlier years, he had been a resident of the Brandon Training School.

Stephen enjoyed bowling, playing basketball, television sporting events, and visits from his family.

Survivors include his brother, Kenneth Goulette of Washington; his sister, Marla Winters of Middlesex; his caregiver and home provider for the past seven years, Becky Jacobs of Richford and her mother, Joyce Ann whom he called, “Grandma;” a niece, Kimberly Goulette; and a nephew, Charles Winters. He is predeceased by his father and mother.

A Service of Remembrance will be held Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at 2 p.m. in the St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 11 Church St. in St. Albans. A graveside service will be held in the spring at the convenience of the family in the Berlin Corner Cemetery. There are no calling hours.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Silver Towers Fund, Barre Elks Lodge 1535, P.O. Box 245, Barre, Vt. 05641.

The Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy St., Barre, is in charge of the arrangements.

NORMAN R. “PICKLE” PLOOF

ST. ALBANS -- Mr. Norman R. “Pickle” Ploof, age 73, died unexpectedly Sunday, Jan. 16, 2005, at the Northwestern Medical Center. He was born in St. Albans, Nov. 5, 1931, son of the late Treffle and Zepherine (Dubois) Plouffe.

Norman served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Germany. He worked at Lavallee & Ide until he retired in 1994. He also was a driver for Fabe’s Taxi in St. Albans. As a young boy he worked on various farms around the St. Albans area. Norman was a member of the American Legion Post 1, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars post 758. He was an avid sports fan and loved the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots. As a young boy, he and his brothers would play football and baseball.

He is survived by the love of his life and his companion of 49 years, Myrtle Duprey; their six children and spouses, Bonnie and Richard Garrett, Sally Riopel, and Norman Duprey all of St. Albans, Lisa and Mike McLaughlin of Georgia, Deborah and Ken Bohannon, Robin and Kevin Gover all of Swanton; four stepchildren and their spouses, Diane and Ted Lafar, Francis and Susan Duprey all of Swanton, Sandra and Fred Snide of St. Albans, Penny and Richard Poupart of Waterbury; a son-in-law, Burt Hale of St. Albans; 22 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. He also leaves a brother, Raymond Ploof of Georgia; his sisters Irene Tanner, Anita and her husband Armand Perrault; a brother-in-law Louis Preston all of St. Albans; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; a grandson Cody Hale; son-in-law Francis Riopel; his brothers Maurice and Harvey Ploof; sisters Yvonne Menard, Rita Preston; and brother-in-laws Harry (Sonny) Menard and Phil Tanner.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005, at 11 a.m. in Holy Angels Church. Interment will be in the Ploof family lot in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home and Commemorative Services.

G. LAWRENCE HOPKINS

FRANKLIN -- Lawrence Hopkins of Franklin passed away Jan. 16, 2005, at Redstone Villa Nursing Home in St. Albans. He was born in Lewiston, Mont., June 22, 1921, the only child of Hilda Hopkins of Franklin and George L. Smith of Centerville, Colo.

He graduated from St. Thomas Choir School in New York City and the Ridgefield School in Ridgefield, Conn. After graduating from Trinity College in Hartford, Conn. in 1942, he began teaching math, physics and chemistry at St. James School, an Episcopal school in Maryland. He was also the school organist and eventually became director of the school glee club. After attending RPI in Troy, N.Y.; Colby College in Waterville, Maine; and Ohio State University, he completed a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Vermont.

In 1965 he and his family moved to New York where he headed the math department of The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. With an interest in computers and a vision toward the future, in the late 1960’s he taught himself several programming languages and introduced computers to the school early on as a lesson planning and instructional tool for the departments.

In 1985 Larry and his wife Betty, retired to Franklin, the homestead of Larry’s mother, Hilda Hopkins Smith, so that they could spend many more years enjoying their camp on Lake Carmi.

During his 42 years of teaching Larry amassed quite a number of devoted students who kept in touch over the years, even during retirement---- a retirement blessed with family, friends and former students visiting for many fishing expeditions on Lake Carmi.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Caroline Elizabeth Hackett Hopkins and his two children, George L. Hopkins, Jr. (Tim) and Frances G. Hopkins. For many years Larry was a member of the Mayflower Society of Descendants and the Sons of the American Revolution.

A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, at 2:30 p.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue Swanton Village. A former student of Larry’s, The Reverend Father John K. Morrell of Montreal, will officiate. Interment will take place later at the family’s convenience in the Franklin Village Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Vermont, 338 Rivers Street, Montpelier, Vt. 05602.

TAMIE LYNN BUCHANAN

GRAND ISLE -- Tamie Lynn Buchanan, 39, ascended Friday morning, Jan. 14, 2005, at her home surrounded by her loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Tamie was born on Nov. 2, 1964, the daughter of Earl and Barbara

(Harris) Nolan. She attended Grand Isle School and Colchester High School. Tamie was a kind, gentle person, with a keen eye for deals and lost or misplaced items. She was known amongst her family and friends as “Hawk Eye, ” because of this. She enjoyed shopping and garage sales.

Tamie is survived by her son Dustin, who has been her pride and joy. She is also survived by her parents Earl and Barbara (Harris) Nolan; her sister Angela Thompson and her nieces Heather Elizabeth and Holly Leia all of Williston; by her little brother Christopher Tuttle; her special friend Teresa, who drove her to many appointments; and by many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Tamie had a great love for animals. A special dog named “Lady” and her cat Cheyanne, who was always nearby.

Special thanks to Hospice and nurse Marty Lemnah, who helped care for Tamie on her long journey home, and to her dear friend Linda Foster.

A Private Funeral Service for the immediate family will be held at their convenience. Burial will be in the Grand Isle Cemetery.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to the Visiting Nurses Association, 1110 Prim Road, Suite #1, Colchester, Vt. 05446.

Arrangements were by the Minor Funeral Home in Milton.

RHODA H. LONG

BANGOR, MAINE / MILTON, Vt. -- Rhoda H. Long, 104, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor, Maine.

Rhoda was born in Messina, N.Y. on Jan. 31, 1900, the daughter of Harry and Ethel (Farnum) Hubbard.

She graduated from the Northfield Academy and from the Castleton Normal School. She was a life member of the Eastern Star. She was married to Lauren G. Long, who predeceased her in 1956.

In addition to being a homemaker, she was a manager of the Huntington Hotel and owner operator of several apartments in Burlington. She was also an air raid spotter during World War II.

Rhoda leaves behind many loving memories.

Surviving relatives include a son, Lauren H. Long and wife Lois of Inglis, Fla.; five grandchildren, Lauren H. Long Jr. of Fairfield, Maine, Rebecca R. Johns of Paradise, Calif., Kathleen J. Lawson of Butte, Mont.; Alan R. Long of Scott, AFB, Ill., and Daniel L. Long of Old Town, Maine. She is also survived by a sister, Hazel Siegriest of Milton, Vt.; and four great-grandchildren and five nephews.

A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday evening, Jan. 18, 2005, at 7 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton. Visiting hours for family and friends will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. before the service on Tuesday. Rhoda will be buried by her husband Lauren in the Warren Cemetery in Warren, Vt. in the spring.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor for their loving care.

Arrangements are by the Minor Funeral Home in Milton, Vt.
