REID JOHN BRIGHAM

Reid John Brigham, age 78, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family, on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, following a long courageous battle with illness. Reid was born in Burlington on Jan. 8, 1927, the son of Ray and Alma (Everest) Brigham.

He proudly served during World War II in the U.S. Navy on board USS ZENOBIA as a Radarman. On Sept. 21, 1947, he married Barbara M. Holden in the United Church of Milton. Reid worked for the Central Vermont Public Service for over 43 years retiring as Hydro Production Supervisor. He was a member of the United Church of Milton, Seneca Lodge 40 F&AM for over 55 years serving as Past Master. He was a member of the Champlain Order 115 Sword of Bunker Hill, Veterans of Foreign Wars and a Plus Member the Vermont 251 Club.

He was very active with and took great pride in being a member of the Milton Fire Department for over 30 years, and served as Fire Chief for over 11 years. Reid was also a Trustee for many years for the Milton Cemetery Association. He enjoyed serving as Assistant Scoutmaster of the Boy Scouts of America for several years and was very involved with Little League. He loved University of Vermont Men’s Basketball and the New York Yankees. Reid enjoyed golf, working around his home and spending the summers at Camp Everest. Barbara and Reid enjoyed traveling to the 48 lower States, but had no hope of visiting Alaska and Hawaii - Barb didn’t like ships and Reid didn’t like airplanes.

In addition to his wife, Barbara of over 57 years, Reid is survived by his sons, Rodney Brigham and his wife Karen of Georgia and John Brigham and his wife Tina of Milton; by his grandchildren, Eric Reid Brigham and his fiancee Mary Schliecker, Jennifer Franzen and her husband Christopher; and Travis Ivan Reid Brigham, who affectionately called him “Popeye;” and his great-grandchildren, Jeffrey, Christina, Joel and Jacob Brigham. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Charlotte Brigham of Alburg and Nancy Holden Goodrich of Shelburne; several nieces, nephews and very good friends and neighbors. Reid was predeceased by his brother Willis S. Brigham; brother-in-law Leland G. Holden; father-in-law Guy Holden and Edith “Deedie” Holden.

The family wishes to extend their sincere special gratitude to Dr. Julie Olin and neighbor Holly Van Winkle as well as all of his kind caregivers for the compassionate care he received.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, at 10 a.m. in the United Church of Milton.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Reid’s memory may be made to the United Church of Milton, 51 Main Street, P.O. Box 107, Milton, Vt. 05468 or the Milton Cemetery Association, c/o George Nelson, 20 Baker Lane, Milton, Vt. 05468.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home, located at 237 Route 7 South in Milton. A Masonic Service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m.

LOIS E. WELD

RICHFORD -- Lois E. Weld, age 86, passed away Friday morning, Jan. 14, 2005, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans with her family at her side.

She was born in Berkshire, Jan. 13, 1919, the daughter of the late Hyland and Anna (Berry) Thompson.

She was a resident of Richford since 1973 and was a former resident of Berkshire. She was a member of All Saints Catholic Church in Richford, the Dorcas Society in Berkshire and the Berkshire Historical Society. She was employed at the Berkshire Center School and the Richford High School in the hot lunch program and had been a cook at Alpine Haven. During the falls she worked as an apple picker at Frank’s Orchard in Abbotts Corner, Quebec.

Mrs. Weld had many enjoyments in life, some of those are as follows, crocheting, puzzles, gardening, cooking, canning, making her grandchildren donuts, sugaring with her husband on the family farm in Berkshire. She will always be remembered as a very gracious person and you were always welcome in her home.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Floyd Weld, they were married in All Saints Catholic Church on April 1, 1939; two sons and their wives, James and Gloria Weld, and Douglas and Joyce Weld all of Berkshire; two daughters and their husbands, Ethelyn and Everett Dubuque of South Hero, and Janet and Steve Longe of Enosburg; 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; two nephews and their families. She was predeceased by a brother and his wife, F. Lynn and Margaret Thompson.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, at 11 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church in Richford with Reverend Frank Eksterowicz celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be this spring in the Berkshire Center Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be held Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4 at the Spears Funeral Home, 140 Main St., Richford.

GLADYS L. MARTELL

MILTON -- Gladys L. Martell, 91, passed away peacefully early Wednesday morning, Jan. 12, 2005, at the Green Mountain Nursing Home in Colchester.

Gladys was born on Jan. 1, 1914, in Milton, the daughter of Simon and Helen (Murray) Estus.

She was married to Victor Martell who predeceased her in 1984.

Mrs. Martell was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church and a lifetime Milton resident.

She is survived by her grandchildren, Billy, Darren and Becky Martell and their children; by her sister-in-law, Addie “Tony” Estus of Westford; a special niece, Samantha Mott of Milton, and Darlene Cooper of Swanton, and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her son William Martell; by her brother Lyle Estus; her sisters, Thelma Quebec, Lela Tracy, Laura Lawrence and Theresa Meunier.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at 11 a.m. in St. Ann’s Catholic Church located on Main Street in Milton.

For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to the Champlain Valley Agency on Aging, P.O. Box 158, Winooski, Vt. 05404-9958.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, Jan. 14, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home, Rt. 7, Milton.

THEODORE R. "TED" COTE

ST. ALBANS -- Mr. Theodore "Ted" Cote, 73, passed away with his loving family at his side, on Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at Northwestern Medical Center after a courageous battle with ALS. He was born in Salem, Mass. on May 12, 1931, the son of the late Albert C. and Mae (Davis) Cote. On Sept. 15, 1950, at St. Teresa's Church in Queens, N.Y., he married the former Gloria A. Urbano, who survives him.

Ted was a graduate of Pinkerton Academy in Derry, N.H. and received an associate degree in agriculture from the Thompson School at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, N.H. He served in the United States Coast Guard during the Korean Conflict, where he was a member of the North Atlantic Patrol serving on the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter "Coos Bay." In 1957, he moved his young family to Vermont (Caledonia County) to take a position as an agronomist/sales representative for a Canadian fertilizer company, Shur Gain. He became an insurance representative of the Modern Woodmen of America in 1966, where he earned professional designations of L.U.T.C.F and F.I.C., and received many national awards as well as being the #2 representative in the country. Ted loved being a member of the Coast Guard Reserve where he attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Ted was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society appearing on Public TV educating children about the hazards of smoking. He was a teacher of religion and was attempting to revive the traditional Latin Mass and was the Vermont Chairman for UNA VOCE. His many enjoyments were telling jokes, nature hiking, walking his dogs at Hard’ack, swimming, biking and gardening.

Besides his wife of 54 years, Gloria of St. Albans, he is survived by his step-mother, Marylee Cote; sons, Dennis M. Cote and his wife Kathryn of Waterford, Vt., Thomas R. Cote of Livonia, N.Y., and Ralph E. Cote and his wife Michelle of Barre, Vt.; daughters, Carrie Dumont of Hyde Park, Vt., and Juliet O'Neil and her husband William of Morristown, Vt.; brothers and sister, Father Richard Cote, O.M.I. of Ottawa, Ontario, Edna Courchesne and her husband Leo of Haltom, Texas, Rita Mazariegos and her husband Fred of Silver Springs, Md., Edmond Cote of Hurst, Texas, Rachel Cote of Falmouth, Mass., and Paul Cote and his wife Cheryl of Edmonton, Ky.; grandchildren, Claire, Simone, Jesse, Alanna, Olivia, Liam, David, Jonah, Corrine, Danielle, Rebecca, Dalton, and Gabriel. Also by his beloved canine companion, Sasa. He was predeceased by a son, Joshua James Cote on July 24, 1999.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Anthony's Catholic Church in East Fairfield. Interment will be later this spring at the Cote Hill Family Cemetery in Morristown. Friends may call on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St.

CAROLINE D. STORCK

ST. ALBANS - Mrs. Caroline D. Storck, age 77, died Wednesday morning, Jan. 12, 2005, in the Haven Health Care Center, with her loving family at her bedside.

She was born in New York City, May 21, 1927, daughter of the late Joseph and Georgianna (Diamond) Monahan. She married George F. Storck on April 9, 1947. Caroline cared for others all her life. As a younger woman, she was a teacher’s aide and a school crossing guard. Her last employment was a dietary aide in a hospital.

She is survived by her husband of 57 and a half years, George Storck of St. Albans; three children, Carol Ann and her husband Brooke Ostrander, Robert and his wife Barbara Storck of Wenham, Mass., Angela Storck of Ridgefield, N.J.; a brother, Henry and his wife Katherine Monahan of Newburgh, Ind.; two grandchildren, Katie Ostrander and Jordan Ostrander, Jordan’s companion Alexis Smith; sisters-in-law, Antoinette and her husband Thomas Judge of New York City, and Dorothy Meehan of Mastic, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

Interment will be in Vermont Veterans Cemetery in Randolph next spring.

RACHEL (RYEA) LOSSMANN

BRISTOL / RICHFORD - Rachel Ruth (Ryea) Lossmann, 61, died Dec. 19, 2004, in Bristol with her family by her side after a long courageous battle with cancer.

Born Dec. 8, 1943 in Coventry, daughter of Doreen (Ducolon) Ryea and Raymond Clair Ryea, she resided in Richford in the 1950s where she attended the schools. On June 16, 19662, she married Wm. Lossmann, Jr. and they resided much of their married lives in Bristol.

She was employed for many years by CPC of Vermont, and more recently by the Middlebury College.

Rachel was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend and one of her greatest joys in life was having her family all together. Her home was a haven for her grandchildren on weekends, where they learned many outdoor skills, such as hunting and fishing. She was a fabulous cook who was known for her homemade piecrusts and beef jerky.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her four sons, Wm. F. Lossmann III of Jacksonville, N.C., Peter, Frank and his wife Wendy, and Todd, all of Bristol; also six grandchildren, Michael, Jason, Cole, Nick, Brooke and Wyatt. She also leaves her four brothers, David Ryea of Richford, Raymond Ryea of East Hartford, Conn., Hollis Ryea of Westminster West, and Richard Ryea of Montgomery; also two sisters, Christine Paradee of Fairfield and Mary Lou Pierce of Bristol; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, as well as by a sister, Eleanor; and two brothers, Fredrick and Reginald.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Addison County Home Health and Hospice, P.O. Box 754, Middlebury, Vt. 05753.

Private services will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

BLEASE B. MATTHEWS

GEORGIA -- Blease B. Matthews, 85, a longtime resident of Georgia, died unexpectedly but peacefully Monday Jan. 10, 2005, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

Born in South Carolina, Feb. 25, 1919, he eventually joined the Army, which brought him to Vermont where he married his first wife Frances Richards. Blease served overseas during the Pearl Harbor conflict and upon discharge from the Army, he made Vermont his permanent residence. In his early years he enjoyed hunting, fishing and in his latter years he enjoyed his many rides to the Northeast Kingdom with his current wife Carrie. There aren't many roads left in Vermont that he didn't drive on. Blease was a member of the Georgia Plains Baptist Church and the VFW. His entire life was dedicated to his family, which he was very proud of. He never interfered, but was always willing to give advice to those of us in need.

Blease was more affectionately known as "Red, " "Bill" or "B. B." and is survived by his wife of 40 years, Carrie (Gonyeau) Matthews; by his three sons and their spouses, Bill and Fern, John and Nancy, both of Georgia and Dennis and Susan of Florence, Mass.; seven grandchildren, Christine, Brian, Holly, Jennifer, Jody, Benjamin and Hank; 11 great-grandchildren, Justin, Alicia, Katelyn, Emily, Nicholas, Alexander, Grace, Kristen, Jacob, Lily and Jenna; two brothers, Alvin and Lorenzo Matthews; three sisters, Lessie Adams, Ronell Rushford and Ruby Burnor. Blease was predeceased by his first wife, Frances Richards; three brothers, Lynwood, Hayward, Pettis; and two sisters, Unida and Naomi.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005, in the Minor Funeral Home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., with a wake service held at 3:45 and 8:45 p.m. Funeral Services will be held in the Georgia Plains Baptist Church in the spring at a date and time to be announced. Burial will follow in the Georgia Plains Cemetery.

JUDITH E. KALO

ALBURG - Judith E. Kalo, 59, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Warren, Ohio on Nov. 18, 1945, the daughter of Andrew and Pauline (Mazanetz) Bretsik.

Judy was a switchboard operator at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans for many years. She devoted her life spending time with her children and grandchildren. She especially loved fishing in her backyard and cookouts with her family. Judy devoted many hours to her garden that she enjoyed so much. She looked forward to football season, when she and her husband Joe would spend Sunday afternoons watching NFL football while enjoying their favorite snacks.

Judy is survived by her husband Joseph of Alburg; her son Scott Garrity and his wife Stephanie of St. Albans; son Timothy Garrity of Simpsonville, S.C.; stepson Aaron Kalo of Elyria, Ohio; her grandchildren, Shane and Ryan Garrity, Kyndra Domina, Keiren and Cayden Garrity, Kyle and Kayla King; her brother, Andrew Bretsik of Florida; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Joseph and Vivian Kalo of Elyria, Ohio; and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, Jan. 14, at 5 p.m. in St. Amadeus Church in Alburg. Friends are invited to share memories of Judy at her home following the church service.

Arrangements are in the care of Stephen C. Gregory Cremation Service of Shelburne.

DENVER A. MITCHELL

BRATTLEBORO - Denver A. Mitchell, 85, of 115 Glen St., Brattleboro, died Monday morning at Eden Park Nursing Home following a lingering illness.

He was born Feb. 23, 1919, in East Fairfield, the son of John and Mabel (Call) Mitchell. He attended East Fairfield Schools and worked on the family farm in East Fairfield before moving to Brattleboro in 1957.

Mr. Mitchell was a Licensed Practical Nurse at the Brattleboro Retreat for 28 years, retiring in 1982.

On Sept. 29, 1944, he married the former Freida McLaren, who survives. Besides his wife of 60 years, he leaves two sons, Harold J. Mitchell of Brattleboro and Leonard A. Mitchell of Brattleboro; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The Liturgy of the Word will be offered Friday at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Max E. Carr Funeral Home, 147 Western Ave., Brattleboro. Burial will be in the spring in Locust Ridge Cemetery in Brattleboro. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home Friday from 1 p.m. until the hour of the service.

HOMER C. FISKE

BAKERSFIELD - Mr. Homer C. Fiske, age 77, died Sunday morning, Jan. 9, 2005, in the Fletcher Allen Health Center, following an extended illness, with his loving family at his bedside.

He was born in Berkshire, Jan. 30, 1927, son of the late George and Delia (Deuso) Fiske. He was married to Florence Cross on Feb. 3, 1949. For 37 years he was employed by Francis Howrigan & Sons managing dairy farms and boiling, tapping and gathering maple sap, until his retirement in 1992.

Homer is survived by his wife of almost 56 years, Florence; their six children and their spouses, Pauline and Leon Bushey of Enosburg, Reginald and Paula Fiske of Swanton, Carolyn and Harvey Bushey of Franklin, Nancy and Todd Kragel of Havasu, Ariz., Teresa and Brian Smith of Bakersfield, Michael and Sandra Fiske of Sheldon; a brother, Raymond Fiske of Albany, N.Y.; a sister, Peggy Judd of Lebanon, N.H.; a special uncle, David Deuso of Montgomery Village; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his 10-month-old daughter, Sandra Fiske in 1961; a grandson, Kevin Fortin; and three siblings, William Fiske, Cora Flood and Charles Fiske.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Brady & Levesque Chapel. Friends may call at the funeral home, 86 South Main St., from 3 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday. Interment will be in the Fiske family lot in Bradley Cemetery.
