ELLAMAE (MYOTT) ROTELLA

SOUTH BURLINGTON -- EllaMae (Myott) Rotella, 84, a longtime resident of Colchester, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at Allenwood at Pillsbury Manor in South Burlington.

EllaMae was born in Sheldon Springs on May 11, 1920, the daughter of the late Benjamin and Ella (Girard) Myott. She was a graduate of Enosburg Falls High School, Class of 1939. She was married in Sheldon Springs on Sept. 3, 1940, to Joseph S. Rotella, who predeceased her on June 26, 2000.

EllaMae was employed for many years and retired from the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont, Mary Fletcher Unit (now FAHC). She enjoyed gardening and quilting, but her life was surrounded by her love for her family.

EllaMae is survived by two sons, Thomas Rotella and wife Sandra of Winooski, and Joseph Rotella, Jr. and wife Donna of St. Louis, Mo.; one daughter, Linda Lavallee and husband Ronald of Nashua, N.H.; five grandchildren, Julie Rotella Leombruno and husband Joe, Krista Rotella-Johnson and husband John, Karyn Rotella-Seidl and husband Jon, Jason Lavallee, and Melissa Lavallee; six great-grandchildren, Samuel and Peter Leombruno, and Zachary, Bailey, Emily and Payton Rotella-Johnson; and by many nieces and nephews.

EllaMae was predeceased by a daughter, Judith; a grandson, Thomas; two brothers, Frank Myott and Lawrence Myott; and four sisters, Elma Benoit, Ruth Seaver, Doris Mazza, and Hortense Sorrell.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at 11 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Winooski. Interment will follow at St. Stephen's Cemetery in Colchester.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Champlain Valley, 1110 Prim Road, Colchester, Vt. 05446. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday, Jan. 12, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the LaVigne Funeral Home, 132 Main St., Winooski, Vt.

RICHARD JAMES POIRIER

ENOSBURG FALLS - Richard James Poirier left our world to be with God on Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at his home. He was born Oct. 15, 1926.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced at a later date. Spears Funeral Home in Enosburg Falls is in charge of arrangements.

ROGER A. SAVAGE

GEORGIA -- Roger A. Savage, 58, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at his home in Georgia, surrounded by his loving family. Roger was born in Burlington on Oct. 30, 1946, the son of Kenneth and Esmerelda (Baroque) Savage.

He was a member of the Army National Guard and had worked for Gauthier Trucking Co. for several years.

Roger is survived by his wife Carol (Hart) Savage of Georgia; his children, Lisa Cote and her husband Gary of Williston, Tammy Savage of Colchester, Nicole Joyal and her husband Matthew of South Hero, Roberta Cota and her husband James of Montgomery, Cindy Legault and her husband James of Fairfax, David Chaplin and friend Kathy of St. Albans, John Chaplin of Swanton, Richard Chaplin of East Fairfield, Tanya Chaplin and fiance Brian Johnson of West Swanton; by his mother, Esmerelda (Marie) Jerome and her husband George of Milton; 23 grandchildren, one great-grandchild; his brothers, Roy Savage and wife Sun Nam of Seattle, Wash., Reginald Savage and wife Lois of Arkansas, Rene Savage and wife Sharon of Newport, Vt.; his sisters, Regina Boucher and husband Roger of Milton, and Rena Potwin and husband Gerald of Newport; and by several nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to gather at Roger’s daughter Tammy’s home at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, located at 210 Prim Road in Colchester.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to Roger's family to be used according to their wishes.

Arrangements were by the Minor Funeral Home in Milton.

ROBERT W. MERCY

RICHFORD -- Robert W. Mercy, age 81, passed away Saturday morning, Jan. 8, 2005, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans. He was born Feb. 23, 1923, in Richford, the son of the late Frank and Lottie (Williams) Mercy.

He was a life long resident of Richford where he was employed at Sweat - Comings as a factory superintendent for 54 years retiring in 1995. He was a U.S Navy Veteran. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking and Richford History.

He is survived by a daughter and her husband, Gail and Thomas West; a son and his wife, Evan and Terri Mercy all of Richford; four grandchildren, Rebecca and Jamie West, and Margaret "Maggie" and Krystin Mercy; and a daughter-in-law, Linda Mercy of Barre. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret (Martindale) Mercy in 1979, they were married June 29, 1943; a son, Dale Mercy in 1996; a grandson, Travis Mercy in 1999; and a brother, Lynwood Mercy.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 11, 2005 at 2 at the Spears Funeral Home, 140 Main St., Richford with Deacon Jon Ramey officiating. Interment will be this spring in the Hillside Cemetery in Richford.

A time of visitation will be held at the funeral home Tuesday afternoon from 1 until the hour of the funeral.

BARBARA (STEWART) POPPLE

FAIRFAX -- Barbara (Stewart) Popple, 73, a longtime resident of Fairfax, passed away at her home on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005. She was born in Burlington on March 15, 1931, daughter of the late Robert and Georgiana (Swan) Stewart.

Barbara graduated from Bellows Free Academy, Fairfax, Class of 1948. After several years of single handedly raising her three children, Barbara met and married her soul mate and best friend, Howard Popple, Jr. on Dec. 26, 1960. Howard predeceased Barbara in 2002.

Mrs. Popple traveled the world with her family and Howard as he served the United States as a member of the U.S. Air Force. The family settled back in Fairfax after Howard’s retirement from the military and that is where Barbara remained until her passing.

Barbara was a professional in the banking community initially as an employee of the Franklin Lamoille Bank in Milton. Her career took her to her “favorite place, ” Peoples Trust Co. of St. Albans. She served at PTCO for the remainder of her career until her retirement as the vice president and manager of the Georgia branch in 1993.

As the foundation and support for her family, Barbara was the family cook and entertainer, organizing family gatherings at the lake on George Shore and at her home as recent as Jan. 1, 2005. She enjoyed reading and debating military action and politics with anyone who was willing to engage. She loved to travel and had a particular fondness for “cruising” the seas.

Barbara is survived by her three children, Sheri Rainville and husband, Mark, of Fairfax, Scott Popple and wife, Betty, of St. Albans and Herb S. Popple and wife, Vicki, of Valrico, Fla. Barbara is also survived by her three brothers, Robert Stewart and wife, Joyce, of Fairfax, Douglas Stewart and wife, Peggy, of Fairfax and Richard Stewart and wife, Susan, of Arlington; and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jim and Joyce Irish of Florida.

Affectionately known as “Gram Barb” or “Barbie, ” she is also survived by her grandchildren, Lauri and husband Dale; Cory, Nathan, Emily and husband, Vince; Jonathan, Joshua, Samantha, Wade, Matthew, Adam and Brenon, and great-grandson, Nikolas; an aunt, several cousins and many nieces and nephews.

Most important, Barbara is survived by her companion and faithful cat, “Whiskers;” and many special friends at the former winter home that she and Howard shared in Spring Hill, Fla.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in A.W. Rich Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, in The United Church of Fairfax with the Reverend Elizabeth Griffin officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in Fairfax Plains Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Barbara’s memory to the Fairfax Rescue Squad, Inc., P.O. Box 228, Fairfax, Vt. 05454. Friends who wish may forward online condolences by visiting .

ELAINE VIOLA MESSIER

SWANTON -- Elaine Viola Messier, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, 76, of Swanton, died on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

Elaine was born in Burlington on July 23, 1928, the daughter of the late Angelo and Edith (Petit) Sultanos.

She is survived by her daughter, Gisele Messier of Santa Fe, N.M.; her son, Roger E. Messier and his wife, Margaret, of Merrimac, Mass.; her grandchildren Kyle and Jake Messier; a brother, James A. Sultanos of Ormond Beach, Fla.; and a sister, Angela Sultanos of Burlington. Elaine is also survived by several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Roger Messier on Oct. 25, 1990.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Jan. 7, 2005 at 11:30 a.m. in Holy Angels Roman Catholic Church, Lake Street, St. Albans. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in St. Albans.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Elaine’s memory may be made to Giordano Manor, 34 Canada St., Swanton, Vt. 05488.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Ready Funeral Home South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Rd., Burlington.

HELEN E. SANBORN

ST. ALBANS / LYNDEN, Wash. -- Mrs. Helen E. Sanborn, 95, a former longtime resident of St. Albans, passed away on Saturday evening, Jan. 1, 2005, at Christian Health Care Center in Lynden following a lengthy illness. She was born in St. Albans on Dec. 27, 1909, the daughter of the late Frederick R. and Rilla (Weston) Nason. She was the widow of Harley E. Sanborn who died on July 11, 1943.

Helen was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in St. Albans. For many years she was a caretaker of girls at the former Warner Home, after which she was employed at the J. C. Penney store and Ann's Bake Shop.

Survivors include a son, Harley Leland Sanborn of Lynden, Wash.; four granddaughters, Virginia Yepez of Keller, Texas, Sandra Place of Windsor, Vt., Sheila Arnot of Eastanollee, Ga., and Colleen Gordon of Piscataway, N.J.; a grandson, Gary Sanborn of South Boundbrook, N.J.; very close friends Malcolm and Louise Bevins of St. Albans; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, Harley, she was predeceased by a son, Fred Nason Sanborn in 1968; a sister, Doris N. Montague; and two half-brothers, Ralph Williams and Elmer Williams.

Funeral services and interment in the Sanborn family lot at Fairfax Plains Cemetery will be held this spring at a time to be announced.

Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the memorial fund at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 11 Church Street, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.

The Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St. Albans is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.

PAUL E. GODIN

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. / EAST BERKSHIRE, Vt. - Paul E. Godin, 79, of Redwood Street in Plattsburgh, N.Y., passed away Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. Born in East Berkshire, April 3, 1925, he was the son of Arthur and Albia (Viens) Godin.

Besides his wife of 32 years, Lorraine King, he leaves a daughter, Ann and her husband Bill Bashista of Deltona, Fla.; a son, Larry Godin of Milton, Vt.; a stepson, Ricky Manor of Frostproof, Fla.; also six granddaughters, Joy Wilkes of Clifton Park, N.Y., Jennifer Godin of Pleasant Valley, N.Y., Angel Streeter of Milton, Vt., Star Godin of Alburg, Vt., Evie Godin and Sis Godin of Wappingers Falls, N.Y.; six grandsons, Christopher Caple of Barre, Vt., Paul Caple of Corning, N.Y., Paul Godin II of Alburg, Vt., Eric Godin of Milton, Larry Godin of Wappingers Falls, N.Y. and Timothy Manor of Frostproof, Fla.; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his son, Gary Godin of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; two sisters, Jeannette Mayhew and Norma Jean Godin; also four brothers, Phillippe, Gerald, Corad and John.

Mr. Godin worked for the state of New York until his retirement some years ago. He enjoyed carpentry and built a total of six homes. Just puttering around was his biggest enjoyment.

Funeral arrangements were with the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh.

MARY C. MAYO

ST. ALBANS -- Mary C. Mayo, 70, a longtime area resident passed away on Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, at her home with her family at her side. She was born in Birmingham, Ala. on Aug. 6, 1934, the daughter of the late William T. and Mary (O'Lena) Crawford. On Jan. 25, 1953, in St. Albans, she married Henry L. Mayo, who survives her.

Mary graduated from St. Mary's High School and Notre Dame College. She was well known in St. Albans for the Tax and Bookkeeping Service she provided for many years until her retirement in 1995 due to illness. For many years she and her husband ran the Mayo Restaurant on Federal Street, where for many Thanksgivings they provided free meals for all to enjoy. Mary was organist for many years for St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church and Holy Angels Catholic Church both in St. Albans. She was a member of the Vermont Tax Practitioners Association, the Women's Auxiliary of Robert E. Glidden Post 758, Veterans of Foreign Wars, a volunteer of Camp Sunrise - Sunset, a Notary Public, was a Alderperson for Ward 5 in St. Albans City, and a member of Franklin County Sportsman Club where she enjoyed shooting skeet.

Her greatest enjoyment was being with her family, teaching them the finer points of deer and duck hunting and fishing and putting on the many family fish fries.

Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Henry L. Mayo of St. Albans; three sons, William Mayo and his wife Sue of Franklin, Michael H. Mayo and his wife AnneMarie of St. Albans Town and L. John Mayo and his wife, Paula of Swanton; a daughter, Karen Mayo and her fiancé, Eric Perzanowski of North Carolina; three brothers, Keith Crawford and his wife, Denise of Swanton, Jim Crawford and his wife, Diane of St. Albans Town and Bill Crawford and his wife, Ann of Covington, Ga.; 10 grandchildren, Carrie (Mayo) Tourville, Robbie and Ashley Mayo, Jessica, Melissa and Lindsay Mayo, Sarah and Laura Mayo and Josh and Charlene Mayo; four great-grandchildren, Cameron, Landon, Alex and Kaley; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary's family will receive friends on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St. from 5 to 7 p.m. There will be no funeral service and interment will take place this spring at the convenience of the family.

BERNARD H. PIDGEON

Bernard H. Pidgeon, 83 of Villemaire Lane, died Friday afternoon, Dec. 31, 2004, in the Vermont Respite House in Williston.

Bernard was born Jan. 28, 1921, in Georgia Plains, the son of Arthur and Etta (Boclair) Pidgeon. On Feb. 20, 1941, he married Bernice Fisher in St. Ann’s in Milton.

He was a Veteran of World War II, proudly serving his country with the U.S. Navy. For two years he worked as a member of the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) building roads and buildings in the area. He later was employed when the U.S. Government built the St. Albans Radar Base atop St. Albans Hill. He drove truck for the R.L. Sweeney Fuel Company in Milton and drove school bus for the Milton School system for many years.

He will be sadly missed by all who came to know him. He is survived by his wife Bernice of Milton and their children, James Pidgeon of Montana, Nancy Tracy and her husband Richard of Milton, Joyce Whitney and her husband Ed of Milton; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; his son-in-law Gilbert Whitney of Deland, Fla.; his brothers and sisters, Harold Pidgeon and wife Millie of Milton, Arthur Pidgeon Jr. and wife Marilyn of Milton, Barbara Weed and her husband Winfield of St. Albans, and Doloras Salter of Essex Junction; as well as several nieces, nephews and in-laws. He was predeceased by his daughter Judy Whitney in 2002; and by eight brothers.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at 11 a.m. in St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Main Street in Milton. Burial will follow in St. Ann’s Cemetery.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Vermont Respite House, 99 Allen Brook Lane, Williston, Vt. 05495.

Visiting hours will be held today, Jan. 3, 2005, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home, Milton.

ZILDA M. BOCASH

ENOSBURG FALLS -- Zilda M. Bocash passed away peacefully on Dec. 31, 2004, at Northwester Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born in North Troy, Vt. on March 8, 1928, the daughter of the late Leon and Hilda (Booth) Santaw.

She attended the North Troy Schools and graduated from Johnson State College in 1972. She was active in church serving on various committees, as well as teaching Sunday school, and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star. Most recently, she was a valued member of the Foster Grandparent Program.

Zilda is survived by her husband of 60 years, William F. Bocash; her daughters, Marcia Litchfield and her husband Lawrence, of Mesa, Ariz., and Valerie Allen of Richford, Vt.; her grandchildren, Lisa Litchfield, Kristy (Litchfield) Baldwin, Michael Litchfield, Katherine (Allen) Dodds, Victoria Bocash, William Bocash II, and Michael Bocash; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Zilda was predeceased by her son Michael Bocash; her grandson Todd Litchfield; her sisters Katherine Santaw and Violet St. Onge; and her brother Edward Santaw.

There will be a Memorial Service to honor Zilda's life on Jan. 8, 2005, at 2 p.m. at the Enosburg Falls United Methodist Church, Church Street, Enosburg Falls with Pastor Cheryl Heater officiating. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
