JOHN P. JENNINGS

MILTON -- John P. Jennings, 38, of Poor Farm Road, passed away Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at his home with his family by his side following a two-year battle with melanoma.

John was born on June 22, 1966, in Burlington, the son of Patrick C. and Sylvia M. Simays Jennings. He was a 1984 graduate of Rice High School and went on to graduate from St. Michael’s College in 1988. On June 3, 1995, he married Jessica Ann Burnor in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Stowe.

He lived most of his life in Vermont with the exception of one year spent in Guam as a radio news reporter. For the past 10 years, John has enjoyed his jobs as a software trainer and developer for Vermont Systems Inc.

John loved the outdoors. He was an avid hiker and camper. He loved to hike the mountains of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine and also enjoyed kayaking and biking. He enjoyed playing guitar and songwriting. Along with friends, Scott Laquerre and Mike James, John could be found singing and playing at “open mikes” and among friends. His voice may have been silenced, but his songs will resonate within us forever.

He loved spending time outdoors with his two boys, Dylan and Ian. They were his pride, his inspiration and his strength. His spirit will forever live on through the legacy of his sons.

The Jennings family would like to thank Vermont Systems and the entire Willey family for their incredible support, both financial and emotional, throughout the past two years. Special thanks to Dr. Von Lepel for her extraordinary care and perseverance in attending to John’s needs. This includes not only assistance with medical care but special attention to the financial and economic realities of long-term illness.

When John was invited into his Heavenly Father’s home. We are sure he responded “Sounds Good.”

John is survived by his wife Jessica Jennings and their two sons, Dylan and Ian Jennings of Milton; his father, Patrick Jennings of Burlington; his two brothers, Mark Jennings and his wife Sarah of Burlington, Stephen Jennings and his wife Monica of Belmont, Mass.; father and mother-in-law, Francis and Susan Burnor of Sheldon; brother-in-law, Michael Burnor of Sheldon; and sister-in-law Tonya Richard and her husband Gordon of St. Albans. He leaves several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his mother, Sylvia Jennings in January 1995.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 10 a.m. in St. Ann Catholic Church, Main Street in Milton. Burial will follow in Resurrection Park Cemetery in South Burlington.

Memorial Contributions can be made to either the Educational Trust Fund being set up for Dylan and Ian Jennings in care of Mark Jennings, 58 Van Patten Parkway, Burlington, Vt. 05401 or to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Development Office please designate for Melanoma Research, 1 Medical Center Drive, Lebanon, N.H. 03756.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday evening, Feb. 15, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home Milton.

WALTER E. HAMMOND

ENOSBURG FALLS / BERKSHIRE -- Walter E. Hammond, 72, passed away unexpectedly at his home Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005.

He was born Feb. 19, 1932, on the family farm in North Berkshire, a son of the late Donald and Annie (Jenne) Hammond.

Walter was a farmer all of his life, a lifestyle that he loved. His love of farming was passed on to his sons, Timothy and David. Walter worked on the Wendell Hull farm in West Enosburg for eight years, the Olmstead farm in Franklin for 12 years and, with great pride, bought his own farm in Berkshire in 1975, retiring in 1991. Following his retirement, Walter gladly climbed on a tractor and helped his sons during haying season. Walter was an avid bowler, often outscoring many younger opponents. He also enjoyed taking bus trips to the casinos with his wife and friends. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion Post 42 of Enosburg and the Berkshire Center Second Congregational Church.

He is survived by: his wife, Eleanor (Longe) Hammond, of Enosburg Falls; they were married March 4, 1953; his children and their spouses, Joyce and David LaMonda of Bakersfield, Timothy and Wendi Hammond of Franklin, David and Brenda Hammond of Berkshire, and Jennifer and Mark Blake of Berkshire; five grandchildren, Chris Lamonda and his wife Kelly, Kerrie Ross and her husband Richard, April Hammond, Danielle Hammond, and Rebecca Hammond; four great-grandchildren, Phoenix and Noah LaMonda, Nicholas and Ian Ross; three step-grandchildren, Jason and Shawn Beaudry, and Theresa Hough; one step great-granddaughter, Alexis Martin; three sisters, Jean Carter of Leominster, Mass., Carol Tillotson and her husband Norris of Richford, and Patricia Schelzo and her husband Phil of Colchester; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Jonathan Hammond on Aug. 11, 1984; two brothers, Leonard and D. Keith Hammond.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m. at the Berkshire Center Second Congregational Church. Interment will be next spring in the Berkshire Center Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be held Monday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.

EDWARD JAMES PEARO

ST. ALBANS -- Edward James Pearo, 85, a long-time resident of this area, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at the Birchwood Terrace Health Center in Burlington. He was born in Alburg on May 3, 1919, the son of the late John and Bessie (Laroe) Pearo.

Edward was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army's 63rd Division in the Rhineland. He earned the rank of staff sergeant and was proud to have served his country. On June 10, 1949, he married Arlene Driver, who survives him.

Ed operated several service stations in the St. Albans area and greatly enjoyed talking and joking with his customers. His favorite pastime for many years was bowling at the St. Albans Bowling Center and throughout the North Country. He enjoyed all sports, but especially baseball. He was a good ball player in his youth and an avid Atlanta Braves fan in his later years.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Maynard.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene of St. Albans; his son, Edward W. and his wife, Laurie (Palmer) Pearo of Colchester; his daughter, Linda Pearo Keating of St. Albans; his sisters-in-law, Doris Driver of Rhode Island and Lucy Pearo of St. Albans; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. from St. Paul's United Methodist Church on Church Street. Interment will be later this spring in the family lot at St. Albans Bay Cemetery. Friends may call on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St. Albans.

Gifts in Ed's memory may be made to Birchwood Terrace Healthcare, Special Care Unit, 43 Starr Farm Road, Burlington, Vt. 05401 or to the Alzheimer's Association of Vermont, 338 Rivers St., Montpelier, Vt. 05602.

ANNA ELLEN KOZLOSKI

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Anna Ellen Kozloski, 77, beloved wife of Thomas L. Kozloski of Schenectady, N.Y., passed away in Ellis Hospital, Schenectady, on Feb. 12, 2005, surrounded by her loving family following heart bypass surgery.

Peggy, as she was known, was the daughter of Maggie and George Tuckett of Shamokin, Penn., born on. Nov. 29, 1927. She married Thomas Kozloski, with whom she has five children.

Peggy was employed for many years with the State of New York in Albany, retiring as a payroll supervisor.

Bedsides her husband, Tom, Peggy is survived by a brother and his wife, Richard and Connie Tuckett of Shamokin, Penn., and her five children and their families. These include her daughter, M. Susan and husband, David Knightes, of St. Albans, Vt., grandsons Christopher of Athens, Ga., David Jr. and wife Renee, and great-grandsons David III and Zachary, all of Rockaway, N.J.; daughter Karen and husband Brad Kahtz of Savannah, Ga., granddaughters Laura and husband David Chesterfield, of Lawrenceville, Ga. and Kerri and husband Justin Barrett, of Murferesboro, Tenn., and great-granddaughter Kayla; daughter Diane and husband Richard Kruzikas of Eagle Bridge, N.Y., granddaughter Aleeza Oppelt of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and son Thomas Jr. and wife Jeanne Kozloski of West Boylston, Mass., and grandchildren Leslie and Stash of Worcester, Mass. Peggy was predeceased by her parents, her sisters Nancy Hunter and Louis Adamson, and her brother George Tuckett.

There will be no calling hours. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1450 Western Ave., Rm. 101, Albany, N.Y. 12203-3572, or the animal protection organization of your choice.

Arrangements are by the DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, Rotterdam, N.Y.

G. LAWRENCE HOPKINS

FRANKLIN -- Lawrence Hopkins of Franklin passed away, Jan. 16, 2005, at Redstone Villa Nursing Home in St. Albans

Be advised that services have been changed. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, May 7, 2005, at 2 p.m. from the Franklin United Church, Main Street in Franklin Village. A former student of Larry’s, The Reverend Father John K. Morrell of Montreal, will officiate. Interment will take place later at the family’s convenience in the Franklin Village Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Vermont, 338 Rivers Street, Montpelier, Vt. 05602.

PAULINE A. STEVENS (TREMBLAY)

RIDGECREST, Calif. / EAST BERKSHIRE, Vt. - Pauline Stevens, 65, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at Ridgecrest Healthcare Center in California. She passed away peacefully in her sleep.

She left behind her husband, Leonard Stevens; and four children, Linda Bearor and Duane of Highgate, Vt., Gary and Catina Messier of South Hero, Vt., and Monica and Jimmy Tremblay of Auburn, N.H. and Michael and Stefani Stevens of Ridgecrest, Calif. Also her three brothers and her sister, Paul and Gloria Tremblay from Georgia, Vt., Francis and Mary Tremblay from Milwaukee, Wis., Louis and Tami Tremblay from Florida, and Jeannie Tremblay and Greg from Georgia, Vt., along with eight grandchildren.

She loved to spend time with her horses and work with the elderly. She was a caring person and will be missed greatly.

The funeral services will be held in Ridgecrest, Calif. The viewing will be on Wednesday.

A private family gathering will be held at a later date in Vermont.

ROLAND V. FORTIN

HIGHGATE CENTER - Roland V. Fortin, age 74, passed away peacefully at his home, Feb. 8, 2005, surrounded by his family. Roland was born Aug. 14, 1930, in Rock Island, Quebec, the son of Origene and Olive (Seguin) Fortin.

Roland began working as a tailor in Rock Island, Quebec and later fulfilled his dream to be a dairy farmer when he bought his first farm in Highgate, Vt.

Roland enjoyed “Hockey Night in Canada” and playing cards with friends and family. His favorite pastime was watching his children and grandchildren play sports.

Roland is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Jeannine (Martin) Fortin and his five children, Denis, Rene and his wife Patty, Michel and his wife Rejeanne, Angele, and Claude and his wife Lucie. He leaves 17 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by five sisters and one brother. Roland was predeceased by his parents; one sister; and four brothers.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at 11 a.m. at St. Louis Catholic Church in Highgate. Father Maurice Boucher presiding. A lunch will follow at the Nativity Parish Hall in Swanton.

Arrangements are in care of Stephen C. Gregory Cremation Service in Shelburne.

Contributions can be made to the American Heart Association.

MADELINE W. COTA

GEORGIA -- Madeline W. Cota, 95, one of the oldest residents of the Town of Georgia, passed away early Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at the Northwestern Medical Center with her family at her side. She was born April 4, 1909, in Halifax, Nova Scotia the daughter of the late William and Alma (Rodenhizer) Wisher. On Oct. 8, 1939, in Philipsburg, Quebec, she married Arthur J. Cota, who predeceased her on Jan. 28, 1982.

Madeline was a 1927 graduate of Swanton High School and was secretary for the Franklin County Extension Office for 17 years, and retired as a secretary from the University of Vermont after seven and one-half years. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in St. Albans.

Survivors include her son, A. James Cota and his wife, Cynthia of Georgia; her grandson, A. James Cota III, of Georgia; her step-granddaughter, Lynne King and her husband Brian of Georgia; three great-grandchildren, Caitlyn, Felicia and Gabrielle King; two sisters, Audrey Kenyon of St. Albans and Mildred Munn of Moscow, Idaho; a dear friend, Ann Pierce of St. Albans; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Madeline was predeceased by a step-grandson, David P. Molleur; two sisters, Daisy W. Morse and Gladys W. Morse; and three brothers, Harold Wisher, Ransford Wisher and George Wisher.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at 11 a.m. from the First Baptist Church, Congress Street, St. Albans. Madeline's family will receive friends on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St. Albans.

Interment will be later this spring in the family lot in Georgia Plain Cemetery.

Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.

MICHAEL W. LAWTON

ST. ALBANS — Mr. Michael William Lawton, age 53, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at his home, following a brief illness. He was born August 6, 1951 in St. Albans son of George William and Evelyn (Benham) Lawton. He attended Holy Angels Grade School and graduated from Bellows Free Academy. ~He enlisted in the U. S. Navy serving in the Vietnam Era aboard the U.S.S. Joseph Strauss. Following his military career he was employed at Fonda Container Corp. in St. Albans and later worked in Quality Control for I. B. M. in Essex Jot. Michael was a past president of the Vietnam Veterans of. America, Franklin County Chapter # 753, a member of the American Legion, Green Mountain Post # 1, The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Robert E. Glidden Post # 758 and a number of Cribbage Clubs and Texas Hold’em players groups. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, playing pool, hunting and playing card games.

Michael is survived by his two daughters Heather Austin of Highgate and Carrie and her husband Jeremiah Wilson of Jeffersonville, Mother Evelyn (Benham) Lawton of St. Albans, sisters Sheila and her husband Wayne Gilman of Barre, Kellie and her husband Roger Jette of St. Albans, brother Gary and his wife Rose Lawton of St. Albans, four grandchildren Eric and Eliza Austin of Highgate and Liam and Molly Wilson of Jeffersonville, several nieces, nephews, several great nieces, great nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Michael was predeceased by his father William George Lawton June 23, 2003 and his sister Valerie J. Plant September 11, 1990.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, at 10:00 A. M. in Holy Angels Church. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St. from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. The Vietnam Veterans of America will hold a Memorial Service at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.

Interment will be in the Lawton family lot in Holy Cross Cemetery, with full military honors, this next spring, at a time to be announced. Memorials may be made to the Franklin County Chapter # 753 of the Vietnam Veterans of America, P. 0. Box 965, St. Albans, Vt. 05478. ELIZA LAURA BOUCHARD

SWANTON — Mrs. Eliza Bouchard, 73, a longtime resident of 327 St. Albans Road, died Saturday evening, Feb. 5, 2005, in the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans City with family by her side.

Born in Clarenceville, Quebec Canada on, May 31, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Laura (Shedrick) Loyer. She attended schools in Canada and on; November 6, 1948, was married to Clifford C. Bouchard who survives her.

Liza has been a longtime parishioner of The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and a member of the Ladies of the Moose, Lodge 1090, St. Albans.

Besides her husband, Clifford, she leaves her daughter, Lisa Bourgeois and her husband, Donald; her son, Steven Bouchard and a special daughter-in-law, Nancy Bockus, all of Swanton; three grandchildren, Christopher Bourgeois, of Burlington, Darci Bourgeois of Eden and Dan Bockus of Swanton; four sisters, Madeline Lafar of Swanton, Doreen Chaffee of Highgate Springs, Evelyn Martin and her husband George of Highgate Falls and Annie Vosburg and her husband Hank of Clarenceville, Quebec; two brothers, Arthur Loyer of Montreal and Richard Loyer and his companion Peggy Cracker of Swanton; two sisters-in-law, Diana and Linda Loyer both of Swanton as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her husband of 56 years, Liza was predeceased by a sister, Blanche Loyer; brothers, Wilford, Andrew and Albert Loyer and brothers-in-law, Marshall “Buddy” Chaffee and Richard Lafar.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, at 11 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada Street, Swanton Village. Father John J. Meagher, SSE will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in the Bouchard family lot in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave. Swanton on Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Gifts in Eliza’s memory may be made to the, Alzheimer’s Association, Vermont Chapter, P.O. Box 1139, Montpelier 05601.

RICHARD A. “CHAD” CHADWICK

ST. ALBANS — Richard A. Chadwick, 71, a lifelong area resident, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday Feb. 3, 2005. He was born on Dec. 8, 1933, the son of the late Gordon and Gladys B. (Olds) Chadwick.

Chad was employed for 30 years at the former Fonda Container Corporation retiring in 1988. He then worked at Cioffi's Corner Store for several years until he became a security officer for the U. S. Department of Homeland Security (INS), where he was presently employed.

Graduating from Bellows Free Academy in 1954, where he lettered in football, basketball, and baseball, he then joined the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. A proud veteran and an avid golfer, he was a member of Green Mountain Post #1, American Legion and the Champlain Country Club.

Survivors include two daughters; Julie Cousins and her husband, Paul, of South Portland, ME, and Melinda Chadwick and her friend Keith of St. Albans, a brother; Raymond G. Chadwick and his wife Janet of Lakewater, Fla., two sisters; Catherine Wetherby and her husband Clinton of Middletown Springs, Vt., and Barbara Bray and her husband Chester of Highgate, Vt., his longtime companion; Noni Berthiaume and her children, Sherri and Craig of St. Albans, eight grandchildren; Nichole, Andrew, Meghan, Jennifer, Chadwick, Benjamin, Devin, and Sam, the mother of his daughters; Joan Linscott of South Portland, ME and his former son-in-law; Rob Cioffi of St. Albans. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother; Francis in 1932.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday Feb. 8, 2005, at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Fairfield Street. Spring interment will be in the Chadwick family lot at Sheldon Village Cemetery.
