MARY CHILTON “PAT” DANIELSEN

SWANTON -- Mrs. Mary Chilton “Pat” Danielsen, age 90, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2004 at the Northwestern Medical Center. She was born March 19, 1914, in Swampscott, Mass., daughter of the late Reverend Frederick W. and Mary (Delano) Manning. She married Rev. Donald A. Howard Aug. 14, 1941, and he predeceased her in 1976. Later she married Robert Danielsen Sept. 19, 1987, and Mr. Danielsen died in 1994.

Pat was the executive director for the YWCA in Providence, R.I., Waukegan, Ill., Manchester, N.H., Trenton, N.J., and New Haven, Conn., retiring in 1985. She obtained a federal contract for Job Corp. training for inner-city youth. She was a very faithful member of the Episcopal Church.

She is survived by her two children and their spouses, Mr. Robert Manning Howard and his wife Marilyn Howard of St. Albans and Mrs. Mary Chilton Callaway and her husband Reverend Cannon James Callaway of Manhattan, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Donna Lynne Howard, Laura Jean Kaddis, Daniel Chilton Callaway, and Hannah Boone Callaway; a special great-granddaughter, Mary Chilton Kaddis; a sister and her husband, Mrs. Charlotte Ambercrombie and her husband Reverend Vaughan Ambercrombie of Pensacola, Fla. She was predeceased by her parents, husbands, and brothers and sisters, Dr. Miriam Manning, Frederick Manning, Theodore Manning, Eunice Haskell, and Lois Manning.

Pat was not your typical grandmother. From a young age we called her Pat, not Grandma. "I'm not old enough to be a grandmother, " she would tell us. No one we knew had a grandmother as lively or active. She had a wonderful love of life. She loved to dance and flirt, to give advice and help people. In her 80s she was still swimming and walking, while we raced to keep up with her. She was always in a hurry to go on to something new, especially if she could be in charge.

Recently, she celebrated becoming a great-grandmother for the first time. The new great-grandchild was named Mary Chilton, after her. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. One of my favorite memories of her is when we played "Pit, " shouting at the top of our lungs in the laundry room so we wouldn't disturb anyone. She was a strong, independent, educated woman when that was not common. We all hoped that someday, we would be as strong and successful as she was.

A memorial service was held today, Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at 10 a.m. in the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Swanton. Officiating was Reverend Reid Farrell and Preaching was Pat’s son-in-law Reverend Cannon James Callaway. Interment will be in the Prospect Hill Cemetery in Nantucket, Mass.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home And Commemorative Services.
