FATHER JON BRUDER
DANVILLE — Father Jon Bruder, well known Trappist monk and Danville resident, died peacefully at the Vermont Respite House Thursday, March 31, at the age of 80.

Fr. Jon lived out his life as a Trappist monk in a simple cabin he built in 1967 with lumber from an old barn. He was ordained a Trappist priest in 1956 and resided at the abbey, Our Lady of Guadalupe in Lafayette Oregon until 1964. He then spent an important two years at a Camaldolese hermitage; there he learned that religion was “a love affair with God.” He came to find, though, he needed to share the joy of his knowledge with others.

He received permission to leave the hermitage, eventually finding his way to Danville in 1966. At his cabin off Walden Hill Rd., Fr. Jon has lived his own version of hermitage life. He became well known within both Catholic and ecumenical circles for his missions and prayer retreats. No longer able to travel but wanting to share his message with the world, he published his book, “My Search for Life’s Meaning - I Found My God … In My Heart”, a book four decades in the making.

During WWII he was a navigator on a B-24 crew with the Army Air Corps. He flew 50 bombing missions over northern Italy, Germany, and Austria in a period of four months with the 450th bomb squadron. He attended several of the Cottontails’ reunions over the years.

He was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Margaret (Murray) Bruder, his brother Robert and wife Colleen, brother Joseph and his wife Dorothy and their granddaughter Elizabeth, and his sister Elizabeth Melahn and her daughter Susan.

He is survived by a brother-in-law, Wesley Melahn and his five children Christopher, Jeffrey, Joel, Deborah, and Sarah; his brother Joseph’s six children John Michael, Thomas, Barbara, Marilyn, Patty, and Cindy; his brother Robert’s four children Timothy, Roberta, Marianne, and Kathy. There are also several grandnieces, grandnephews, and one great grand niece.

Fr. Jon is also predeceased and survived by the many people who came to know him through his gentle manner and all-accepting love.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Johnsbury Thursday, April 7 at 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church. Homage and respects can be paid Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. at the Sayles Funeral Home in St. Johnsbury. Burial will be in May at Danville Green Cemetery with military honors bestowed by the Army Air Guard.

Memorial contributions could be directed to The Vermont Respite House, 99 Allen Brook Lane, Williston Vt., 05495; or to Vermont Catholic Charities, 351 North Ave., Burlington Vt., 05401.

We can only marvel at the joy Fr. Jon has had in the anticipation and realization of seeing The Father face to face. Grieve not; feel free to share your memories, tributes, and thoughts at cbzuccaro@together.net. Cards to the family can be sent to his niece at the following address: Patty Bruder, 29520 Sherwood Rd., Willetts Calif., 95490

RAYMOND JAMES LAVERY
SHELBURNE — It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of Raymond James Lavery, from cancer, on March 31, 2005. Raymond peacefully completed his life journey at home in the embrace of his loving family.

He was born July 9, 1937, in Richford, son of Raymond G. and Dorothy Cull Lavery. He attended Richford High School, St. Michael's College, the Catholic University in Washington, D.C., and received a Licentiate in Sacred Theology from the University of Montreal.

His early employment was with the Office of Religious Education for the Diocese of Burlington, Air North, Innotech Aviation and Pratt & Whitney in South Burlington, where he was much respected for his work ethic, integrity and kindness.

After ministries in Burlington, Newport and Shelburne, Raymond became the loving husband of Patricia Gour, whom he married in 1977. It was on his family that his impact was the greatest. A hard-working and kind-hearted man, Raymond particularly enjoyed philosophical and political discussions, especially with his sons. He considered becoming a father his most precious accomplishment. His sons were always his first concern and through them he experienced the joy of unconditional love. They were his pride, his inspiration and his strength.

He remains always in the hearts of his wife, Patricia, and his sons, Nathan and Kyle. He is also survived by his four sisters, Mary Laffey and her husband John of Cranston, R.I., Margaret (Peggy) Spicer of Richford, Patricia Carroll and her companion David Rice of Corinth, N.Y., and Monica (Micki) Woodruff and her husband Stephen of Barre; 13 nieces and nephews and their children; and a dear cousin, Madeline Donlon.

Raymond's family extends a deep and humble heart-felt thank you to his sister, Micki, for her constant supporting presence; she walked alongside every step of the way giving true gifts of love and comfort to both Ray and Patricia throughout his illness; to their very dear and precious friends, Paul and Helen-Mary Danyow, who lent a hand whenever needed and whose love is immeasurable; to Dr. Chris Nunnink, the staff at the Vermont Center for Cancer Medicine, the VNA Hospice staff, especially Chris Kaufman and Nancy Carlson, for their compassionate, sensitive and personal care during Ray's illness; to Ray's longtime friend, Father Reid C. Mayo, whose heart and spiritual presence were always open and available; and to all those unmentioned but not forgotten who bore witness and shared our experience deeply and continue to do so.

Friends are invited to gather with Raymond's family in the Corbin and Palmer Funeral Chapel, 209 Falls Road, Shelburne, today, April 1, from 5 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, April, 2, in St. Catherine of Siena Church, Shelburne, followed by a gathering of friends in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Vermont Respite House, 99 Allen Brook Lane, Williston, Vt. 05495. A committal service will be held at a later date.
