EARLENE ARDELL (BEVINS) BURNS

WINOOSKI- Earlene Ardell (Bevins) Burns, 72, of Winooski passed away unexpectedly Thursday May 24, 2001 at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington surrounded by her loving family.

She was born May 24, 1929 in Fairfax, Vt., daughter of the late Ira and Eliza (Reynolds) Bevins. She was loving mother, grandmother and sister and will be greatly missed by all of those who knew and loved her.

She is survived by, one son, Donald LaFleur of South Burlington; two daughters, Pamela Dextraze and her husband, Wayne, of Shelburne, Linda Carrassi and her husband, Joseph, of Essex Junction; one brother, Lloyd Bevins and his wife, Gyneth, of Fairfax; three sisters, Ruth O'Boyle of South Burlington, Alice Patterson of Richford, Carlene Sweet and her husband, Robert, of Fairfax; and eight loving grandchildren, Donny, Timmy, Wayne JR., Carrie, Brandy, Mark, Amanda, Elizabeth; several nieces and nephew; and her very special friends at Senior Towers. She was predeceased by, her husband, Robert Burns, in July of 1999, a brother Ira Bevins and a sister, Glenna Smith.

Visiting hours will be held at the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home on Tuesday May 29, 2001 from 6-8 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at the United Church Of Fairfax on Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at 10 a.m. with Reverend Elizabeth Griffin officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in Fairfax Plains Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in Arlene's memory to St. Michael's Rescue Squad 1, Winooski Park, Colchester, VT 05439 or V.N.A. 25 Prim Road, Colchester, VT 05446. Arrangements are by Hayes-Rich Funeral Home 1176 Main St. Fairfax.

FRED DONALD LAPAN

SWANTON- Fred Donald Lapan, 69, died Sunday morning, May 27, 2001 in his residence on Bushey Street.

A lifelong resident of Bushey Street in Swanton, Fred owned and operated a substantial trucking business for over 35 years. In earlier years he had worked as a technician for Spearhead Radio and Television. He was a lifelong parishioner of The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

He was born in Swanton, Jan. 15, 1932, the son of the late Noah and Mary Jane (Gardner) Lapan. He attended St. Anne's Academy and on Sept. 20, 1952, married the former Elizabeth Lampman, who survives him.

In addition to his wife, Elizabeth, of Swanton, Fred leaves his son, David Lapan and his wife, Tina, and two grandchildren, Kyle and Nathan Lapan all of Swanton. He also leaves his brothers and sisters, Evelyn Lampman of Swanton, Theresa Brow of St. Albans Town, Norman Lapan and his wife, Janice, of Highgate, Robert Lapan and his wife, Shirley, of Swanton, Phyliss Draper and her husband, Maurice, of Milton, Larry Lapan and his wife Beulah of Swanton, Noah Lapan and his wife, Debbie, of Highgate, and Linda Lapan of St. Albans; a sister-in-law, Janice Lapan of Swanton as well as many nieces and nephews.

Fred was predeceased by two brothers, Harold and James Lapan, a sister Shirley Trombley and a brother-in-law, Donald Brow.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, Thursday, May 31, 2001 at 11 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Canada Street, Swanton. The Pastor, Father Charles H. Ranges, SSE, will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in the Lapan family lot in Saint Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton on Wednesday, May 30, 2001 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Gifts in Fred's memory may be made to Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, Saint Albans 05478.

Fred's wife Elizabeth would like to give special thanks to her sister, Virginia Lampman and the staff of the Franklin County Home Health Agency who assisted her with Fred's care, allowing him to be able to live out his last days in his home.

WILLIAM A. "Billy the Kid" TOPRANI, Sr.

WEST SWANTON - William A. Toprani, Sr., 61, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, May 24, 2001, in the Northwestern Medical Center. He was born in Monongahela, Pa., on July 8, 1939, the son of the late William A. and Tomisina (Villella) Toprani.

Bill attended Washington Jefferson University and served his country in the U.S. Army. He enjoyed spending time with his sons, fishing and playing cards with his friends.

Survivors include his two sons, William A. Toprani, Jr. and his fiancé, Jenny Moore of Wilsonville, Ill., Jason A. Toprani and his wife, Stacey, of Colchester; two grandsons, Nick and Dalton Toprani and several cousins.

A memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, May 31, 2001 at 10 a.m. in the Church of the Nativity in Swanton. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be mailed to the Toprani Estate, c/o Jason A. Toprani, 1136 Porters Point Rd., Colchester, Vt. 05446 to be used according to the family's wishes. Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home, 87 S. Main St., St. Albans.

WEYLAND H. HUBBARD

JOHNSON- Weyland Herbert Hubbard age, 70 a lifetime resident of this area passed away Sunday afternoon at his home with his loving family at his side after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Oct. 12, 1930 in Jeffersonville, Vt., the beloved son of the late Robert and Ruth (Thayer) Hubbard. He was a graduate of Cambridge High School Class of 1948.

As a veteran he had served his country well as a sergeant in the United States Army, 82nd Airborne Division. He was also a member of the American Legion of Johnson Post #46.

He was employed as a heavy equipment operator working for many years with the International Union of Operating Engineers, IUOE Local 98.

He married the former Patricia Royea on June 14, 1958. Together they raised three wonderful boys, a commitment Weyland was dedicated to, always maintaining a constant protective family vigil. He enjoyed hunting and snowmobiling in Vermont's great outdoors and was an active member of the Sterling Snow Riders. Having a great appreciation for antiques, he furnished their home with pieces he had personally refurbished over the years.

He served his community well as a member of the Boy Scouts Review Committee and past member of the Johnson Selectboard. Weyland loved the community he lived in and dedicated much of his time in the Hubbard family's "adoption" of the Power Hose Bridge. With his good friend Raymond he cared daily for the seasonal bridge displays as well as the many flower barrels and hanging potted plants no nicely displayed along Main Street helping to present Johnson as a true home town comfortably welcoming all residents and visitors alike.

Weyland was a loved a respected patron of Johnson. His warm personality and unconditional loved and attentions will be greatly missed by all those who had the good fortune to know and love him. He was truly blessed with great friends and wonderful neighbors.

He is survived by, his loving wife, Patricia (Royea) Hubbard of Johnson; three wonderful sons, Robert Hubbard and his wife, Stephanie, of Connecticut, Steven Hubbard and his wife, Kathy, of Fairfax, Larry Hubbard of Waterville; two sisters, Janice Rushford and her husband, Carl, of Eden Mills, Helaine Perkins and her husband, Richard G., of Johnson; five wonderful and much loved grandchildren, Robbie, Robin, Adam, Elizabeth, and Ashley; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours will be held at The Hayes-Rich Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 30, 2001, from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral Services will be held in the United Church of Johnson on Thursday, May 31, 2001, at 2 p.m. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family in the Jeffersonville Village Cemetery.

Memorial Contributions may be made in Weyland's memory to the Make a Wish Foundation of Vermont, 100 Dorset St.-Suite 13, South Burlington, VT 05401. Arrangements are by they Hayes-Rich Funeral Home 1176 Main Street Fairfax.

ESTELLE J. CHEVALIER

SWANTON- Mrs. Estelle J. Chevalier, 70, died Friday evening, May 25, 2001, in her residence on Canada Street with her daughters and granddaughter at her side.

She was born in Winooski, Vt., Jan. 20, 1931, the daughter of the late Ernest and Gladys (Bushey) LaBier. She graduated from St. Anne's Academy in Swanton with the Class of 1949 and on June 21, 1950, married Raymond O. Chevalier who predeceased her, March 6, 2000.

For more than 40 years Estelle lived at 37 New St. and just recently moved into her daughter Cindy's home on Canada St. In earlier years, while her husband Raymond served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict, she resided in the state of Texas.

Estelle's children and grandchildren want everyone to realize that they had the best mother, grandmother and great grandmother in the entire world. Estelle lived for her family, they could always turn to her in a time of need and she would always be there for them. Cindy, Jane and Michelle will always remember their daily rides, coffee at McDonald's and weekly dinners out.

She was a long time parishioner of The Church of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and had worked for a time in food service at Missisquoi Valley Union High School.

Estelle leaves her two daughters, Cindy Loiselle and her husband, Marcel, and Jane Staples and her husband, Troy, all of Swanton; three sons, Michael Chevalier and his wife, Elaine, of Highgate Springs, Rock Chevalier of Essex Junction and Kirk Chevalier of Swanton; grandchildren Michelle Paradee of Swanton, Krista Kyle and Kolby Staples of Swanton, Joseph Chevalier of Swanton, Jessica Chevalier of Bowling Green, Kentucky, Carol Chevalier of Bennington and Marie O'Briter of New Jersey; one new great grandson, Connor Matthew Paradee of Swanton. Also surviving is a sister, Juliette Mahoney and her husband, John, of Mena, Ark. and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves very special friends, Margaret Bellrose, Gloria Fournier and Doris Hubbard all of Swanton.

A sister, Ernestine Bushey in 1978, a grandson, Matthew Loiselle in November 1983, and a brother Calvin LaBier in 1993 predeceased her.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated, Monday, May 28, 2001 at 11 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The celebrant was the Pastor Father Charles H. Ranges SSE. Ministers of the Altar were Estelle's granddaughter Krista Staples and friend Kristin Begnoche.

Music was provided by soloist and guitarist, Sister Joan Sirtowt, OSU and Sister Mary Ellen Theriault, OSU. Estelle's sons, Michael and Rock Chevalier, placed the White Funeral Pall over the casket and three crucifixes were then placed on the Pall by grandsons, Kyle and Kolby Staples.

Sister Yvonne Martell, DHS, proclaimed the Old and New Testament Readings. Daughters, Cindy Loiselle and Jane Staples and granddaughter, Michelle Paradee, presented the Offertory Gifts.

Very beautiful and special words of remembrance were shared by Sister Joan Sirtowt, OSU.

Among the delegations in attendance were representatives from; Aubuchon Hardware, Total Home Center, Warren Fournier Home Improvement Center, Catamount Construction, Wright's Construction, Grand Avenue Enterprises and Nativity and Saint Louis Parish communities. Interment followed in the family lot in St. Mary's Cemetery with Father Ranges reading the committal prayers. The bearers were sons-in-law, Troy Staples, grandson-in-law, Rod Paradee, grandson, Joseph Chevalier and family friends Warren and Michael Fournier and Matt Cadieux.

Estelle's family would like to give special thanks to Sister Joan Sirtowt, OSU, Sister Mary Ellen Theriault, OSU, Sister Yvonne Martell, DHS, Father Charles H Ranges, SSE, Lorraine Papineau, Doctor Erin Rhoades and the staff of Kidder Memorial Home for all the prayers, love and concern shown to Estelle and her family during her illness and after.

ELAINE M. JOHNSON

RICHFORD- Elaine M. Johnson, 60, died Saturday morning May 26, 2001 at the Holiday House Nursing Home in St. Albans following a very courageous battle with cancer.

She was born Aug. 2, 1940 in Richford, the daughter of Harold Johnson and the late Winona Johnson.

She was a 1958 graduate of Richford High School. Following graduation she moved to Connecticut where she worked as an electrician at St. Raphael's Hospital for several years. She then moved back to Vermont and stayed at Perley Farms in South Royalton and worked at the Ultra Motive Plant in Bethel until she was diagnosed with cancer. She then came back to Richford to be close to her family and friends.

She stayed with her nieces Bonnie "Bon" Johnson and Rhonda "Sis" Burnham and then stayed with her dad until she was hospitalized. She enjoyed fishing and going to lawn sales. She never would cross the Canadian border because her car was always filled treasures from her sales. She enjoyed being with her family and close friends.

She is survived by her father, Harold Johnson of Richford; her brother and his wife, Harold "Durwood" and Phyllis Johnson of Richford; her sister and her husband, Charlotte and Murelle Burnham of Sutton, P.Q. Canada; great friends, Rita and Gordon Thompson of Enosburg; a very special social worker, Pat "The Kid" Proux from Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital in Hanover, NH; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 11 at the Spears Funeral Home on 140 Main St. in Richford. Interment will follow in the Richford Center Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be held Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home in Richford.

HARLEY J. YOUNG

ST. ALBANS, VT./LOWELL, MASS. -- Mr. Harley John Young, age 89, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001, at his home in Lowell, Mass. following an extended illness. He was born in Fairfield (Greens Corner) Oct. 3, 1911, son of the late Akin and Mary (Gero) Young. He was employed as a dairy milk delivery person in this area for many years. He moved to Massachusetts to be near his children.

He is survived by his three children, Debbie (Young) McKinney of Lowell, Mass., Carol (Young) and her husband Robert McCauley of Pine Hill, N.J., Roland and his wife Charlotte Young of Lowell, Mass., eight grandchildren, Megan and Korey McKinney, Mark, Dawn, Wayne and Rachel McCauley, Ryan and Roland Young, II; eight great grandchildren, borthers-in-law, Harold and his wife Jacqueline Greenia of Enosburg, Arnold and his wife Danielle Benjamin of Sheldon; sisters-in-law, Lorraine McMahon of St. Albans, and Phyllis Spencer of Austin, Texas; several nieces and nephews, including two special nieces, Carol and Darlene. He was predeceased by his wife Joyce Greenia Young on Aug. 3, 1997, and by his sisters, Ardel, Lizzy, Hilda, Marian and brothers, Leon and Delbert, and sister-in-law, Helen Wagner.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Brady & Levesque Funeral Chapel. Friends may call at the funeal home, 86 So. Main St., from 10 a.m. until the funeral time on Saturday. Interment will be in the Young family lot in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

ELMER J. WETHERBY

RICHFORD ­ Elmer J. Wetherby, age 84, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001 at the Verdelle Village ECF in St. Albans.

He was born Nov. 13, 1916, in Enosburg, the son of the late Frank & Winnie (Sheldon) Wetherby.

Elmer was a resident of Richford most of his life and was employed as a mill worker at Atlas Plywood and Sweat Comings for many years, retiring in 1990.

He is survived by his wife Rita (Pollander) Wetherby of Richford; one son, Robert Wetherby of Richford; four daughters, Winnie Thompson of Enosburg, Lydia Lawyer, Anne Loiselle and Robin Guyette, all of Richford; 16 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, T. Dawn Maskell; 11 brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.
