SARAH J. STUART
GEORGIA — Sarah J. Stuart, 57, died unexpectedly, with her loving family by her side, on Saturday, May 7, 2005, at Fletcher Allen Health Care after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

She was born on May 21, 1947 in Concord, Mass. to Leonard Maliska and Jane (MacKnight) Maliska. She graduated from Camden High School and later received a diploma in college courses along with a certification from the Katherine Gibbs School in Providence, R.I.

On Sept. 11, 1971, she married James Edward Stuart in St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in White Plains, N.Y. On Feb. 6, 1974, her first daughter, Jennifer Davis, was born in Portland, Maine.

In March of 1974, James and Sarah moved to Burlington, Vt. as part of an employment transfer. On July 24, 1976, Sarah’s second daughter, Melissa Jane, was born.

For 11 years, Sarah was a stay-at-home mom, at which time she volunteered what little free time she had in the kindergarten classroom and the library at her girl’s elementary school. She also taught Sunday School at Calvary Episcopal Church in Underhill while serving on the Altar Guild, Search Committee, the Vestry, and she was the editor of the newsletter.

Once the family moved to Colchester, Sarah served on the Vestry and Search Committee at St. James Episcopal Church in Essex Junction. In 1985, Sarah went back to work part-time at Vermont Children’s Aid Society as an administrative assistant. In 1989, she went to work in the mortgage department of the Vermont Federal Bank. She retained her position through the mergers into the Vermont National Bank in 1997 and the Chittenden Bank in 1999. In November 2000, Sarah transferred into the corporate human resources employment group at the Chittenden, where she was employed until she took a medical leave of absence in January 2005.

Sarah was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer in June 1999 at which time she underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatment. In December 2004, she suffered a recurrence of the breast cancer.

Throughout Sarah’s whole life, she lived life to the fullest and never once asked “Why me?” She enjoyed spending time at the family cottage on Capitol Island in Southport, Maine, as well as attending hot rod shows with her life-long partner James, with their 1934 Ford coupe. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, as well as a best friend to her daughters. Her world revolved around her grandchildren and they adored their MeMe.

There are no words to explain how much she will be missed, but she has left us all with many wonderful memories and she was a true inspiration to all.

She is survived by her husband of 35 years, James Edward; two daughters, Melissa Jane, of Colchester, and Jennifer Davis and her husband, Silas Wells III, of Georgia; two granddaughters, Hailey Marie Blondin, of Colchester, and Cassidy Davis Wells, of Georgia; her mother, Jane Brooks Maliska of Swanton; her brother, Leonard Maliska Jr. and his wife, Patricia, who serve as Missionaries in Cambodia; her mother-in-law, Loretta Stuart; sister-in-law, Jeanne Stuart Munz and her husband, Stephen; brother-in-law Thomas Paul Stuart, all of Valhalla, N.Y.

In addition, she is survived by nieces and nephews, Geoffrey and Erik Maliska, Matthew and Michael Palmerini, Chelsea and Stephen Munz; and many special friends that will never be forgotten for all of their encouragement and support.

She was predeceased by her father, Leonard Maliska in May 2004 and her father-in-law, Harold Stuart, in September 1997.

We would like to express a thank-you to all of the wonderful staff at the Hematology/Oncology Unit of Fletcher Allen and the wonderful nurses on Shepardson 4. We also express an extra thanks to her wonderful and excellent doctors, Dr. Hyman Muss and Dr. Paul Larson.

Visiting hours for Sarah will be on Monday, May 16, at the Minor Funeral Home in Milton, Vt., from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Contributions in Sarah’s memory may be made to the Breast Care Center at Fletcher Allen, UHC Campus, 1 South Prospect St., Burlington, Vt. 05401, or to the Susan G.
