ROGER S. BAKER
BAKERSFIELD - Roger S. Baker, age 79, passed away Sunday, May 8, 2005, at the Franklin County Rehab Center in St. Albans.

He was born Feb. 10, 1926, in Multonboro, N.H., the son of the late Edward and Bertha (Smith) Baker.

He was a resident of Bakersfield most of his life. He was employed at Blow & Cote Construction and Munson Earth Moving for many years. In his earlier years he logged with his father prior to entering the service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 798 in Newport and a former member of the Vermont Auto Enthusiasts Club. He enjoyed gardening, caring for his yard, classic cars and working on his Farm All Super C Tractor.

He is survived by his daughter, Patricia Longley of Waterville; three sons and their wives: Steven and Mary Baker of Hardwick, Jack and Mary Lou Baker of Swanton, and Jerry and Pauline Baker of Enosburg Falls; 11 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harold Baker of Sault St. Marie, MI, and Roy Baker and his wife Dorothy of St. Albans; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Lillian (Lawyer) Baker; a grandson, Wayne Baker; a great-granddaughter, Tina; a sister, Shirley Race; and a nephew, Scott Race.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday morning, May 11, 2005, at 10 at St. Georges Cemetery in Bakersfield with Pastor Lyle Willey officiating. There will be no visiting hours.

For those who wish, contributions in his memory may be made to the Enosburgh Ambulance Service, 83 Sampsonville Rd., Enosburg Falls, Vt. 05450, or to the Arthritis Foundation, Vermont Chapter, P.O. Box 422, Burlington, Vt. 05402.

MICHAEL W. LAWTON
ST. ALBANS — Mr. Michael William Lawton, age 53, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at his home, following a brief illness. He was born Aug. 6, 1951, in St. Albans, son of George William and Evelyn (Benham) Lawton. He attended Holy Angels Grade School and graduated from Bellows Free Academy. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy serving in the Vietnam Era aboard the U.S.S. Joseph Strauss. Following his military career he was employed at Fonda Container Corp. in St. Albans and later worked in Quality Control for IBM in Essex Junction.

Michael was a past president of the Vietnam Veterans of America, Franklin County Chapter 753, a member of the American Legion, Green Mountain Post 1, The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Robert E. Glidden Post 758 and a number of Cribbage Clubs and Texas Hold’em players groups. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, playing pool, hunting and playing card games.

Michael is survived by his two daughters, Heather Austin of Highgate and Carrie and her husband Jeremiah Wilson of Jeffersonville; mother, Evelyn (Benham) Lawton of St. Albans; sisters, Sheila and her husband Wayne Gilman of Barre, Kellie and her husband Roger Jette of St. Albans; brother, Gary and his wife Rose Lawton of St. Albans; four grandchildren: Eric and Eliza Austin of Highgate and Liam and Molly Wilson of Jeffersonville; and several nieces, nephews, several great nieces, great nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Michael was predeceased by his father, William George Lawton, June 23, 2003; and his sister, Valerie J. Plant, Sept. 11, 1990.

Graveside committal and military services will be held Friday, May 13, 2005, at 2 p.m. in Holy Cross Cemetery, Fairfax Street, St. Albans. The services will conclude with a motorcycle drive-by by his co-riders, under the guidance of Francis “Jake” Donor. Interment will follow in the Lawton family lot in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home and Commemorative Services.

GWENDOLYN "PEG" AUSTIN
ST. ALBANS - Gwendolyn Austin, 83, a lifelong resident of this area, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, Jan. 22, 2005, at Franklin County Rehab Center following a lengthy illness. Her loving family was at her side.
She was born in East Fairfield Jan. 30, 1921, the daughter of the late George and Etta (Safford) Britch. She was the widow of Spencer Austin, who died April 5, 1984. They were married in Enosburg Falls, March 14, 1940.

Peg was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in St. Albans and the United Methodist Women, Circle 5. She was a past secretary of the St. Albans CB Club and had the handle of "Daisy." She also bowled in the St. Albans Women's Bowling League and the Mixed Doubles. In her leisure she enjoyed knitting, gardening, sewing, reading, and crossword puzzles. She especially loved being with her family.

Survivors include her three daughters and their husbands: Barbara and James Thibault, Betty and Wayne Pudvah, and Brenda and Craig Rich, all of St. Albans; a sister, Gladys Elwood of Enosburg; seven grandchildren: Heather Izzo and her partner, Peter Daudelin, Scott Austin and his partner, Shelly Maskell, John Davis and his wife, Michelle, Gwendolyn Davis, Jimmy Thibault and his wife, Rhonda and Michelle Thibault. She also leaves six great-grandchildren: Robert, Adam and Kenny Dudley and Myriah, Amanda and Devin Davis; and nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Clarice Austin; a grandson, Robert Davis; and a great-grandson, Billy Dudley.

Prayers of Committal and interment will be on Friday, May 13, 2005, at 1 p.m. in the Greenwood Cemetery on South Main Street with The Reverend Herman Benjamin, Pastor of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, officiating.

Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home of St. Albans.

GERMAIN J. DESAUTELS
RICHFORD - Germain J. Desautels, age 74, passed away Thursday evening, May 5, 2005, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington with his family at his side.

He was born March 16, 1931, in St. Theodore, Quebec, Canada, the son of the late Ephraim and Yvonne (Dion) Desautels.

Germain was a resident of Richford for the past 42 years and was a former resident of West Berkshire. He worked for 31 years at Blue Seal Feeds and also worked as an electrician, carpenter and farmer. He also owned and operated Desautels Paving for the past 42 years.

He was a member of All Saints Catholic Church. He was a life member, past Grand Knight and 3rd Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 2610, and a 4th Degree Knight and Past Faithful Navigator of Assembly 2719. He helped with the church bingo and the local Meals on Wheels program. He served the Town of Richford as auditor for many years. When he wasn’t working he enjoyed deer hunting with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Rejeanne (Beaudoin) Desautels of Richford, they were married June 17, 1950; his children: Pierre Desautels and his wife Ginger of State Line, Pa., Daniel Desautels and his wife Deborah of Richford, Marjolaine Longe and her husband Patrick of Sheldon, Gilbert Desautels and his wife Sally of Richford, Sylvie Desautels and her fiancé Chris Woods of So. Strafford, Patrick Desautels of Richford, Raymond Desautels and his companion Marlene Chates of Highgate, and Renee Patterson and her husband Larry of Montgomery; 17 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; his sisters: Laurette Courtemanche and her husband Roland of St. Hyacinthe, Que., Lucienne Dion of Montreal, Que., Germaine Provost and her husband George of St. Theodore, Que., and Jacqueline Favreau and her husband Gilles of Sutton; his brothers: Florian Desautels and his wife Mariette of St. Theodore, Que., Leo Desautels and his wife Claire of New Britain, Conn., Gilles Desautels and his wife Monique of Richford, Jean Noel Desautels and his wife Noella of Richford, Laurent Desautels of Waco, Texas, and Albert Desautels and his wife Ginette of Richford; a half sister, Marthe Chartier and her husband Bruce of Agawam, Mass.; his step-sister, Theresa Desautels of Agawam, Mass.; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by a son, Joseph Desautels; two sisters, Laurentia Courtemanche, and Yvette LaRocque; two brothers, Marcel and Andre Desautels.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning, May 10, 2005, at 11 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church in Richford with Rev. Frank Eksterowicz celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery in Richford.

Visiting hours will be held Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.

KEITH S. DAWSON
FAIRFAX -- Keith Samuel “Woody” Dawson, age 60, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2005, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, surrounded by his loving family. Keith was born on April 10, 1945, in London, England.

He arrived in the United States when he was 11 months of age and became a U.S. citizen in 1962. He graduated from Piscataway Township High School in 1963 and attended Middlesex County College. He will be fondly remembered for his love of music, history, and woodworking. Keith was known as the conversationalist extraordinaire and loved sharing his time and stories with family and friends. An avid collector of all kinds of memorabilia, Keith was a huge fan of Star Wars since 1977. He loved his family and always showed great compassion and empathy for those in need.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lynn Dawson; his mother, Doris Millard; his daughter, Alyssa Dawson; his stepsons, Jason Derner and wife Sharon, Joshua Derner and fiancé Barbara; his granddaughter, Erin; his close friend, Priscilla Dawson; his aunts: Violet Williams, Phyllis Harris, Doreen Hanlon, all of England; and many family members and dear friends.

At the request of his family, there will be no visiting hours. A celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, May 10, 2005, at 6 p.m. in A.W. Rich Funeral Home, Fairfax Chapel with Pastor Bruce Patterson officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Keith’s memory to the Franklin County Humane Society, 30 Sunset Meadows, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.

Arrangements are by John D. Workman of A.W. Rich Funeral Home, 1176 Main St., Fairfax.

NATHANIEL A. COTTON
ALBURG - Nathaniel A. Cotton, 25, passed away unexpectedly Friday, May 6, 2005, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans. He was born in Mount Pleasant, Mich. on Feb. 18, 1980, the son of Jimmy R. Cotton and the late Carol Leah (Thornton) Cotton.

Nathan was in his senior year at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant where he was studying computer science.

Survivors include his father, Jimmy R. Cotton and his wife, Barbara of Alburg; a brother, Dustin Cotton and his wife, Lisa of North Hero; two step-brothers, Erik Gillett of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Jacob Gillett of Alburg; two step-sisters, Renée and Janet Gillett, both of Alburg; his paternal grandmother, Peggy Gresham of Locust Grove, Ga.; a special aunt, Vicky Thornton of Pentwater, Mich.; and several other aunts and uncles. He was predeceased by his mother, Carol, on Dec. 21, 2002.

A graveside funeral service will be held today, May 9, 2005, at 3 p.m. at the Riverside Cemetery, Route 78 in Swanton with the Reverend Herman Benjamin, Pastor of St. Paul's United Methodist Church officiating.

The Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St. Albans is assisting the family.

CAROLYN MAE BROWN
EAST RICHFORD - Carolyn Mae Brown, age 66, passed away Sunday, May 8, 2005, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

She was born July 16, 1938, in Richford, the daughter of the late Donald and Evelyn (Frechette) Miner.

Carolyn was a home-body who enjoyed her home and the time spent with her best buddy, her cat, Muffin, and, also having her friends coming to visit. She was a former member of Vermont Automobile Enthusiasts Club and Cars of Yesteryear Club. She enjoyed crocheting and doing crossword puzzles.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda Brown of Lachine, Que.; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Arnold Brown on Sept. 15, 2000, they were married Sept. 28, 1954. She was also predeceased by a son, John Brown on Sept. 21, 1975.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 12, 2005, at 2 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 140 Main St., Richford with Pastor Patrick Hoadley officiating. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family at the Brock Cemetery in Glen Sutton, Que. There will be no visiting hours.

JACK GANIN
ALBURG, Vt. / FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Jack Ganin, 85, died on, May 2, 2005, in Ft. Lauderdale Florida following a stroke.

Jack was born in the Bronx, N.Y., the eldest of three sons. At around the age of nine Jack began working at his fathers tire business. Through his determination, tireless work that spanned nearly 60 years and savvy investing, Jack took a small mom and pop organization and transformed Ganin Tire into a large and successful business.

Jack joined the U. S. Navy during World War II. He served as Bosun’s Mate 1st Class, piloting landing craft in the Pacific theater. Jack believed in Democracy and the preservation of the Constitution of the United States. In 1980 Jack met Barbara, the love of his life. Together they lived the life that both of them wanted and deserved; traveling, relaxing together, spending time with family. Jack’s love for his wife, Barbara was real and genuine. He relied upon her and treasured her. Barb always said “Jack was one of the good guys” and misses him deeply. Jack never differentiated between family and his extended family through Barbara. He loved all of his children and grandchildren equally. He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; his children: Howard and wife Marcia, Abby and Husband Abe, Debbie, Pam and husband Tommy; 13 grandchildren: Marissa and husband Amichai, Andrew, Shari, Christopher, Megan and husband David, Ian, Simon, Erin, Keren, Jaclyn, David, Chelsea and Lucy; and three great-grandchildren, Nachie, Levi, and Chava.

He was also predeceased by his parents, Morris and Fanny Albert and his brothers, Sol and Jerry.

Jack was admired for his sharp mind, loving heart, determination, thirst for knowledge and easy-going manner. He lived a rich life and was able to achieve everything he really wanted to do. Jack is certainly a treasure lost, but he will not be forgotten.

Graveside Funeral Services and interment with full Military Honors will be held Friday, May 6, 2005, at 1 p.m. from the Ganin Family lot in Jerusalem Cemetery, Lakeview Drive, North Hero. Rabbi James S. Glazier of Temple Sinai Reformed Jewish Congregation will officiate. A reception for family and friends will follow the services at the Shore Acres Inn and Restaurant, US Route 2, North Hero. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton, on Thursday evening, May 5, 2005, from 7 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Democratic National Committee.

MILDRED I. DEULEN
FAIRVIEW, Oregon -- Mrs. Mildred I. Deulen, age 88, died Monday, May 2, 2005, in Fairview, in her car, from a heart attack. She was born in Cable, Wis., March 26, 1917, and was the last surviving child, of 12 children, of the late James and Lenora (Andrews) Taylor.

Mildred retired from nursing service. She was a resident of the Portland, Oregon area from 1977 to 2000 and the Fairview area until her demise. Besides her 11 siblings she was predeceased by her first husband, Fred Porwitzky, and her second husband, Albert Deulen.

Her survivors include her son, Russell, and his wife Nancy Porwitzky of St. Albans, Vt.; her grandsons and their wives: Thomas and Wendy Porwitzky of St. Albans, Michael and Melanie Porwitzky of Grand Isle; a great-grandson, Andrew Porwitzky at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were held and burial was in Fairview, Oregon. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, Vt. 05478. PAUL GLENN VIETA
HIGHGATE CENTER -- Paul Glenn Vieta, 40, a lifelong Highgate resident, died unexpectedly, Monday, May 2, 2005, in his Lamkin Street residence.

Born in St. Albans, Feb. 9, 1965, he was the son of Aubrey and Janet (Cantell) Vieta. His mother Janet predeceased him on May 17, 2004.

For the past several years Paul has been associated with Rock-Tenn Missisquoi Mill in Sheldon Springs. In earlier years he had worked for Cambridge Mechanical. He was a professional musician and played lead guitar with the Lone Wolf Band and will be remembered as an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and four wheeling.

Paul leaves his father, Aubrey Vieta of East Highgate; a daughter, Rheanna Bushey of Highgate; his sister, Gail Bronchuk and her husband Dan of Milton, and three brothers, Gary Vieta and his wife Pat of Highgate, Carl Vieta of Franklin and his twin brother, Peter Vieta and his companion Lori Benoit of St. Albans; as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, May 7, 2005, at 10 a.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton. Father Maurice U. Boucher, SSE will officiate. Interment will follow in St. Louis Roman Catholic Cemetery, Lamkin Street, Highgate Center. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday morning from 9 a.m. until the hour of the funeral. Gifts in Paul’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 11 Loomis Street, Montpelier, Vt. 05602-3021.

G. LAWRENCE HOPKINS
FRANKLIN -- Lawrence Hopkins of Franklin passed away Jan. 16, 2005, at Redstone Villa in St. Albans City.

A memorial service has been rescheduled for Saturday, May 7, 2005, at 2 p.m. from the Franklin United Church, Main Street, Franklin Village. Longtime family friend, The Reverend John K. Morrell, will officiate. Following the services a bereavement luncheon and time of fellowship will take place in the lower level of the church hosted by the Women’s Guild of the Franklin United Church, to which all are invited. Private interment will be in the Franklin Village Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Kidder Memorial Home, Swanton.
