WILLIAM DAVIS ‘BILL’ MASKELL SR.
HIGHGATE SPRINGS / ST. ALBANS CITY - William Davis “Bill” Maskell Sr., 70, a lifelong resident of the Highgate Springs and Swanton areas and more recently of North Elm Street in St. Albans City, died suddenly Monday afternoon, Oct. 24, 2005, in the Northwestern Medical Center.

Born in St. Albans on Feb. 17, 1935, he was the son of the late Judson and Beulah (Berger) Maskell. He attended schools in Highgate and in 1963 was married to the former Dorothy Mae Porter who survives him.

Bill was involved in the fence and guardrail industry for all of his working life, associated with S.T. Griswold and Lafayette Fence Company and later along with his cousin Cassius Maskell established Maskell Fence and Guardrail, which they operated together until their retirement.

Bill served with the United States Army in Korea from 1953 to 1956 and was a member and past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Charles DaPrato Post 778 in Swanton and the American Legion, Green Mountain Post 1, St. Albans.

He loved the outdoors, enjoyed hunting, fishing and trap shooting and was a past member of the Highgate Rod and Gun Club. He also enjoyed his rides around the horn looking for wildlife and meeting every morning for coffee in the Swanton Village Square with his brothers and friends.

Besides his wife Dorothy, of St. Albans; Bill leaves two sons, Darwin Maskell of St. Albans City and William Davis Maskell Jr. and his wife, Lynn of Sunapee, N.H.; a daughter, Dayle Pecor of Burlington; two brothers, Frederick Maskell and his wife, Barbara, and James Maskell and his companion of 12 years, Bev, all of Highgate Springs; a sister, Beulah “Sister” LaPan and her husband, Larry of St. Albans Town; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Donald and Pauline Porter of Swanton and Helen and Bruce Rounds of Brandon; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are several cousins, including his business partner, Cassius Maskell and his wife, Maddy of Highgate Springs.

He was predeceased by five brothers: Arthur, Roy, Carlton, Terry and Ronald Maskell.

Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton on Friday evening, Oct. 28, 2005, from 7 to 9 p.m. To conclude the evening, members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Charles DaPrato, Post 778 will conduct a Funeral Service and Flag Presentation at 8:30 p.m.

Due to Mrs. Maskell’s severe allergy to flowers, they cannot be accepted. Gifts in Bill’s memory may be made to the Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans 05478.

RALPH M. SANTORE
ST. ALBANS - Ralph M. Santore, 67, died Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

Ralph was born in New Haven, Conn., the son of Orlando and Lucy (Appuzzo) Santore. He married the former Elaine Alling on July 18, 1964, in St. John’s Catholic Church in New Haven, Conn.

Ralph was affectionately known as “Big Ralph” at St. Raphael’s Hospital in New Haven, Conn., where he worked in the Dietary Department. He was a member of the Ascension Catholic Church in Georgia, and belonged to Club Respite in St. Albans.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine of St. Albans; by his children, Monica Santore, Howard Alling and his wife, Valerie, and Julie Santore all of Georgia, Donald Santore of Derby, and Tara Santore of St. Albans; by his granddaughters, Patricia and Tiffanie Alling; his brother, Greg Santore of
Stratford, Conn.; his twin sister, MaryAnn Truszkowski of Hamden, Conn.; a niece, Lisa Minore; and a great nephew, Robert Sebastian Minore, both of Hamden; and by many friends.

A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005, at 11 a.m. in the Ascension Catholic Church in Georgia, Vt.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to his family.

Arrangements were by the Minor Funeral Home in Milton.

ALEXINA M. LEDOUX, R.N.
ST. ALBANS CITY / SWANTON - Alexina M. Ledoux, R.N., 85, a native and longtime resident of Swanton and more recently of 251 Lake Street in St. Albans City, died suddenly Saturday afternoon, Oct. 22, 2005, in the Northwestern Medical Center.

Born in Swanton on Dec. 12, 1919, she was the daughter of the late George G. and Antoinette (Ponton) Ledoux. She graduated in 1938 from the former St. Anne’s Academy.

In her earlier years Alexina taught elementary school with the Daughters of the Holy Spirit both in Canada and Connecticut. She later graduated from St. Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing in Worcester, Mass. and began teaching at the former Mary Fletcher and Fanny Allen Hospital Schools of Nursing. She also served as director of nursing at the former Verdelle Village Extended Care Facility in St. Albans Town.

An active parishioner of The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Swanton, Alexina taught in the parish religious education program and served as Eucharistic Minister, Lector and Assistant Sacristan. In the summer months she regularly worshiped at St. Anne’s Shrine in Isle La Motte serving there as Lector and Sacristan. She was also a charter member of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit Associates Program. And a member of the Nativity Parish Ladies of St. Anne. Since living in St. Albans she has been a member of Holy Angels Parish.

Alexina was also the founder of the Franklin/ Grand Isle Foster Grandparent Program and was active from September 1977 until August of 1984.

It was Alexina’s wish that in her obituary we mention Father Maurice J. Roy, pastor of Holy Angels Roman Catholic Parish in St. Albans, whom she very much admired and respected. She also leaves several cousins and many friends.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005, at 11 a.m. from Holy Angels Roman Catholic Church, Lake Street, St. Albans City. Father Maurice J. Roy will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in the Ledoux family lot in St. Mary’s Cemetery Swanton. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton, Wednesday from 9 until 10 a.m.

Gifts in Alexina’s memory may be made to the Associates of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit, in care of, Holy Spirit Provincial House, 72 Church St., Putnam, Conn. 06260.

ALICIA L. MESSIER
ENOSBURG FALLS - Alicia L. Messier, 92, peacefully went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Oct. 23, 2005, surrounded by loving family at her son’s home in Sheldon.

She was born June 28, 1913, in Dunham, Que. Canada, the daughter of the late Ernest and Alice (Couture) Chalifoux.

Alicia was a loving, caring and devoted, wife, mother and grandmother. She loved socializing with family and friends, especially during the holidays. She loved music and dancing with the men in her life, small and tall, young and old. She cherished her pets, and enjoyed gardening and working on the farm. She was a very special woman, whom people trusted and could count on for whatever reason. Always available to help anyone in need, and never wanted to inconvenience anyone in anyway. She was loved dearly by her family and friends. She touched everyone's lives in a very special way, and will always be remembered and treasured as "Memere."

She is survived by her husband of 72 years, Jerry Messier, they were married Sept. 18, 1933; her sons, Maurice Messier and his fiancée, Mary Jane Pauquette, of Sheldon, Jim Messier and his friend, Debbie Cinnamond of Milton; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson; her brother, Emile Chalifoux of Farnham, Que; her sister, Marguerite Lemire of Danbury, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents she was predeceased by four brothers: Leopaul, Albert, Andre and Maurice Chalifoux; and two sisters, Irene Couture and Yvonne Bisaillon.

Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 11 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Franklin with Rev. Bernard Bechard celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Franklin.

A time of visitation will be held Thursday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.

MARY FRANCES ALBEE MERRIHEW
RUTLAND - Mary Frances Albee Merrihew, 77, passed away peacefully in Rutland Regional Medical Center at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, 2005, surrounded by her husband, her children, and a grandchild.

A service of remembrance will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27, in the Tossing Funeral Home, 39 Washington St., Rutland. People who wish to may make a donation in her honor to Recovery House of Wallingford, or to HerStory of Rutland.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, Reginald and Gertrude Albee of Newport. Her sister, Grace Albee Maynard, resides in Barton.

Mary was born in St. Johnsbury, May 5, 1928. She grew up in North Troy and Newport. She was married to Ray L. Merrihew and they resided in Rutland for 10 years.

Mary was the mother of John L. Chugg of Illinois, Rosalie M. Van Skyhawk of Colorado, James W. Chugg of Ohio, Stephen A. Chugg of New Hampshire, and Judy Frances Chugg of Vermont and Florida. She was the grandmother of Evangeline Van Skyhawk of Colorado, David Chugg of Wisconsin, Justin Chugg and Elizabeth Chugg of Ohio, Marie, Andrew, Joseph and Benjamin Chugg of Vergennes, and of Jamille Albee Cunningham of Vermont and Florida. She was great-grandmother of Ramon Avery Villegas of Colorado. Also, she was Heart Mother to Lincoln C. Merrihew of Massachusetts, Leigh M. Hamel of Connecticut, and Kristen M. Wright of New York, and to a legion of former clients and friends.

Mary received her B.A. degree at the age of 54 from Burlington College where she was valedictorian. In 1984 she received the degree of master of arts in counseling from Vermont College of Norwich. Mary was the first woman counselor hired by the state of Vermont. She was a licensed alcohol and drug counselor and certified clinical supervisor and worked in that field for 30 years. She was cofounder and president of Counseling Center for Human Potential, and a director and founding member of Associated Psychotherapists of Vermont. In 1994, Mary was honored by receiving the Vermont Women Making a Difference Award.

The congregations of many churches enjoyed the wonderful solos she sang. Mary's life was large. She lived life to the fullest, loved sports, reading, and promoted tolerance at every opportunity. She inspired her family and hundreds of friends and recovering people throughout Vermont.

JOHN CLAUDE LEDUC
SWANTON - John Claude Leduc, 87, a longtime resident of Swanton, died early Monday morning, Oct. 24, 2005, in the Haven Health Center in St. Albans Town.

Born in Sainte Cesaire, Quebec Canada on March 13, 1918, he was the son of the late Conrad and Rose (Benjamin) Leduc.

He attended schools in Canada and Fairfield, Vt. and was associated for 27 years with the former St. Johnsbury Trucking Company. He previously worked eight years for Fonda Container in St. Albans City.

John leaves three sons: Norman Leduc of Swanton, Michael Leduc and his wife, Joan of Swanton and David Leduc and his wife, Moira of St. Albans; his brothers and sisters: Gerald Leduc of St. Albans, Antoinette Guttenberg of Swanton, Lillian Bourgeois of Swanton, Roland Leduc of DeBary, Fla., Andrew Leduc and his wife, Fern of Swanton, Mary Roy of Milford, Conn., Jean Fortin of Highgate and Theresa Coleman and her husband, Fred of St. Albans; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his wife, Doris (Menard) Leduc on Aug. 5, 2002; two sisters, Lucille Bombardier and Claudette Peck; a brother, George Leduc; and a longtime friend, Joanne Martin.

At John’s request there will be no public visitation or funeral. Private interment will take place in the Leduc family lot in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Cemetery. Gifts in John’s memory may be made to the Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, 05478.

Arrangements have been under the direction of the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton, Vt. 05488.

VILMA I. INGALLS
MOUNT DORA, Fla. / RICHFORD, Vt. - Vilma I. Ingalls, age 81, widow of the late Hollis Ingalls, passed away Wednesday evening, Oct. 19, 2005, at Laurel Springs in Mount Dora.

She was born July 3, 1924, in Altoona, Pa., the daughter of the late Daniel and Maria (Giolosa) Mastantuono

Vilma was a former resident of Richford and for the past 20 years she made her home in Florida. Following Hollis’ retirement in 1984 they spent their summers on Fairfield Pond. She was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, Catholic Daughter, Ladies of St. Anne, and Home Dem Club.

She is survived by three sons: Bruce J. Ingalls of Longwood, Fla., Ronald B. Ingalls of El Paso, Texas, and Mark W. Ingalls and his wife, Diane of Greenwich, Conn.; four grandchildren: Tyler, Chad, Justin and Christopher; one brother, Joseph Mastanuono of Long Island, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Hollis B. Ingalls on March 14, 2005; one sister, Anna; and three brothers, Henry, William and Arnold.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning, Oct. 25, 2005, at 11 at All Saints Catholic Church in Richford with Rev. Frank Eksterowicz celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery in Richford.

Visiting hours will be held today (Monday) from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 140 Main St., Richford.

JUDITH THERRIEN RYAN
HIGHGATE - Judith Therrien Ryan, 63, passed away Friday, Oct. 21, 2005, at the Northwestern Medical Center with her family at her side, following a lengthy illness. She was born in St. Albans on May 28, 1942, the daughter of the late Arnold J. and Margaret (Brennan) Therrien. Judy was married in Holy Angels Catholic Church in St. Albans on Oct. 22, 1966, to Howard E. Ryan, who survives her.

Judy was employed at the Union Carbide Plant for 16 years until her illness forced her to retire. She was a member of the Green Mountain Post 1, American Legion Auxiliary and enjoyed knitting and being with her family.

Survivors include her husband of 39 years, Howard E. Ryan of Highgate; her daughter; Karen Reynolds and her husband, Alan of Highgate; two special nieces, Stephanie LeClair and her husband, Chris of Fairfax, and Valerie Chagnon and her close friend, Bob Lamos of Swanton; two special angels, her granddaughters, Heather and Amber; her other special angels: Haley, Hillary, Andrea, Shauna, Miriah, Faith and Ayvah; her brother; Michael Therrien and his wife, Bonnie, of Enid, Okla.; her sisters: Sally Phillips and her husband, John of Zypherhills, Fla., Jacqueline Tatro and her husband, John of Sheldon, and Kay Casavant of Berkshire; her special friend, Diane Bissonette of Berkshire; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Judy was predeceased by her brother, Anthony Wayne Therrien; her sister, Maureen LaPlante; and brother-in-law, Ralph Casavant.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2005, at 8 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel, 87 South Main St., St. Albans with the Reverend Leonidas B. Laroche, Pastor of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, officiating. Judy's family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6 p.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in St. Anthony's Cemetery in Sheldon.

GERALD A. MACHIA
JEFFERSONVILLE - Gerald Adlore Machia, age 91, a lifelong resident of Vermont, passed away Friday, Oct. 21, 2005, at Genesis Eldercare in Morrisville. He was born in Sheldon, March 26, 1914, the son of the late Adlore Henry and Della Abby (Martin) Machia. He married the love of his life, Madelyn Hutchins on June 6, 1933, at the St. Thomas Church in Underhill Center, Vt.

Gerald worked for the Town of Underhill and then the Town of Cambridge. During his employment with the Towns he was one of the first to plow snow with a Bulldozer and helped build many roads. During World War II Gerald worked as a welder for the Shelburne Shipyard and as a mechanic for North East Airlines. Gerald was a true entrepreneur who opened his first business with his wife Madelyn in Jeffersonville as Jerry’s Garage and in 1947 they formed Machia Construction Inc. who extended local work for over 100 employees throughout the company’s many years of operation. Some of their major accomplishments included building the road for WCAX TV on Mt. Mansfield, installing the Madonna Ski Lift, graveling the IBM Road and working on the set of the production of Walt Disney’s “Those Calloways” filmed in Jeffersonville in the early 60s.

Gerald had the vision for and developed Jefferson Heights, housing development in Jeffersonville. He was a member of The Knights of Columbus. He was one of the Original Directors of the then Smugglers Notch Skiways, served as a selectman of Cambridge Town as well as a member of the Associated General Contractors and actively supported the Boy Scouts. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, skiing, snowmobiling and working on his farm land.

Above all else Gerald was a dedicated and loving husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed by all those who had the true pleasure to know and love him. In the last four years this included the many nurses and staff members at the Genesis Nursing home at the Morrisville Center. He touched their lives deeply and they cared for him as his extended family.

He is survived by his loving wife and business partner of 72 years, Madelyn (Hutchins) Machia of Jeffersonville; one son, Richard and wife Margaret “Peg” Machia of Jeffersonville; three daughters: Geraldene “Gerry” Rooney and husband, Norman of Jeffersonville, Jane George Shaw and husband, C. Terry of Jeffersonville and Lynda M. Cootware of South Burlington; three sisters: Phyllis Bolio of Underhill, Maxine Ovitt and husband, Wesley of Sheldon Springs and Agnes Churchill and husband, Richard of Sheldon; 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by three brothers: Harland, Kenneth and Adlore “Lorry” Jr.; and one granddaughter, Deborah (Machia) Melvin in 1999.

Visiting hours will be held today, Oct. 24, 2005, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the A.W. Rich Funeral Home Fairfax Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2005, at St. Mary’s Church, Cambridge, Vt. with The Reverend Dan Jordan officiating. Inurnment will follow at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made in Gerald’s memory to Jeffersonville Boy Scouts Troop #39, 125 Sunny Acres, Jeffersonville, Vt. 05464; or to The Alzheimer’s Association.
