ALBERT J. DESROCHES
ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla./FRANKLIN, Vt. — Albert J. Desroches, 72, a longtime area resident and a winter resident of Zephyrhills, passed away late Thursday evening, Dec. 15, 2005, in the Hospice House of Edwinola in Dade City, Florida with his loving family at his side.

He was born in St. Albans on June 14, 1933, the son of the late Wilfred and Mary Clerinda (Bergeron) Desroches.

Albert retired in 1994 as plant foreman for Pike Industries in Williston. He enjoyed sugarmaking with his family and was a former member of the Franklin Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife, Anne (Myott) Desroches; two sons, David Desroches of St. Albans and Ronald Desroches and his wife, Dianne of Georgia, Vt.; five daughters; Monica and husband, Gilbert Sweet of Franklin, Madeleine and husband, Fred Connolly of Pomfret, Conn., Patricia Desroches of Franklin, Delores and husband, Tim Parizo of Grand Isle and Karen Desroches and her friend, Chris Walker of Hancock, N.H. He also leaves a brother, Lawrence and wife, Solange Bergeron of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two sisters, Veronica and husband, Emile Larose of N.Y., and Patricia and husband, Cecil Greenwood of Conn.; his mother-in-law, Cecile Myott of Franklin; two sisters-in-law, Theresa Bergeron of St. Albans and Katherine Bergeron of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two half-brothers, Denis Bergeron of Conn., and Marcel Bergeron of N.Y.; a half-sister, Annicette and husband George LaCoste of Sheldon; 20 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, a grandson, Ryan Forty in 2004 and two brothers, Norbert and John Bergeron.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 23, at 11 a.m. in Holy Angels Catholic Church on Lake Street with the Reverend Maurice J. Roy celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be next spring in the family lot in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Franklin.

Albert’s family will receive friends on Thursday from 2 to 6 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St. St. Albans. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Franklin Rescue Squad, Franklin, Vt., 05457.

COLIN T. GAREY
GEORGIA — Colin T. Garey, 53, a lifelong area resident, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, following a brief illness, at his residence with his loving family at his side .

He was born in St. Albans on Jan. 28, 1952, the son of the late Paul A. and Hilda (Cross) Garey. On Dec. 3, 2005, he was married to Nancy Jayne Best, who survives him.

Colin attended Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans and was employed at Rock-Tenn Paper Mill in Sheldon Springs. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed rebuilding vehicles, especially his Land Rover and refinishing furniture.

In addition to his wife, Nancy, of Georgia, he is survived by two daughters, Melissa Garey of Iowa and Erin Garey of Barre; his two granddaughters, Brianna and Amelia; his sisters, Kathy Button and her husband, Herb, of Highgate, Beryl Champaign of Colchester, Rachel Haas and her husband, Daniel, of North Carolina and Roberta Garey of Swanton; his three brothers, Brian Garey and his wife, Wendy, of Fairfield, Alan Garey and his wife, Suzette, of Georgia, and Douglas Garey and his wife, Paula, of Fairfax; several step-children and step-grandchildren; his in-laws, Jay, Sr. and Dorothy Best; his brother-in-law, Jay Best, Jr. and his wife, Georgia; his two sisters-in-law, Susan Best and Chris St. Pierre and her husband, Richard; his beloved Newfoundland, “Thor” and his adopted Burnese Mountain dog, “Drix;” and many nieces and nephews.

A special thanks to the Intensive Care Units at the Northwestern Medical Center and Fletcher Allen Health Care and to the Hospice Program of Franklin County Home Health Agency.

Graveside services and interment to be held next spring in the Georgia Plain Cemetery will announced at a later date. Messages of condolence are welcome at www.healdfuneralhome.com.

LEONA MARIE LAROCHE
HIGHGATE CENTER - Leona Marie Laroche, 102, one of Franklin County's oldest residents and a longtime resident of Highgate Center died Monday morning, Dec. 19, 2005, at the Haven Health Center in St. Albans Town.

Born in Sainte Sabine, Quebec, Canada on Sept. 11, 1903, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Josephine (Beaulieu) Gaboriault. She attended schools in Canada and on November 13, 1923 was married to Narcisse Laroche who predeceased her in 1979.

Mrs. Laroche was a devout member of the Roman Catholic faith, a faithful parishioner of St. Louis Church and the Ladies of St. Anne as well as a member of the Hi-Swans Senior Citizens.

She leaves her daughter, Gisele Depatie of Highgate Center; four sons: Roger Laroche of Arroyo Grande, Calif., Henry Laroche and his wife, Cecile of Highgate Center, Andre Laroche and his wife, Mae Anne of St. Albans and Paul Laroche of Highgate Center; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Beatrice Gagne of Highgate Center; 20 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two children, Claire and Norman Laroche; brothers, Arthur and Oliva Gaboriault; two sisters, Anna Robert and Rosina Lalanne; a son-in-law, Leopold Depatie; and a daughter-in-law, Jonnah Laroche.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be concelebrated Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005, at 11 a.m. from St. Louis Roman Catholic Church, Lamkin Street, Highgate Center. Mrs. Laroche’s nephew, Father Leonidas B. Laroche, will be the celebrant and Father Maurice U. Boucher, SSE the homilist. Interment will follow in the Laroche family lot in St. Louis Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton on Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2005, from 4 to 7 p.m.

Gifts in Mrs. Laroche’s memory may be made to St. Anne’s Shrine, Edmundite Fathers and Brothers, P.O. Box 280, Isle La Motte, 05463.

BETTY S. MOSS
Funeral services for Betty S. Moss, who passed away on Dec. 11, 2005, were held on Sunday, Dec. 18, 2005, at 3 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel with the Reverend Herman Benjamin, Pastor of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church officiating. Words of remembrance were offered by Betty’s niece, Molly Swainbank.

In attendance was representation from St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, former co-workers at Central Vermont Railroad, Leahy Chiropractic Clinic and neighbors from Marc Avenue.

Honorary casket bearers were Betty’s nephews, Daniel Swainbank, Randy Swainbank, David Swainbank, her grand-nephews, Caleb Swainbank and Jeremy Swainbank, her step-nephews, Wayne Russell and Kevin Russell.

Prayers of Committal and interment will be next spring in the family lot in the St. Albans Bay Cemetery.

Assisting Betty’s family was the Heald Funeral Home of St. Albans.

JAMES FRANCIS RILEY
WILTON, N.H. - James Francis Riley, OD, 49, of Wilton, N.H., died Dec. 15, 2005, at his home following a long courageous battle with colon cancer.

He was born July 25, 1956, in Providence, R.I., the son of Gerald F. and Joyce (Sullivan) Riley.

He graduated from Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans, Vt., the University of Vermont, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree, the New England College of Optometry in Boston, earning a Doctor of Optometry, and the PA College of Optometry. Jim was on the Clinical Staff of the New England College of Optometry and the PA College of Optometry in Philadelphia, and was President of the NH Optometric Association; he was the Optometrist of the Year in 1999. Jim was one of 12 Optometrist in the country to be Chief Examiner for the National Board of Optometrists.

He most recently practiced with Jack Minteer, OD, FAAO in Peterborough and Stephen P Byrnes, OD, FAAO in Londonderry, previously, Jim had practiced with Helfman, Lasky & Associates in Nashua. He had also practiced in Philadelphia, Boston, Linwood, N.J., & Woodbury Heights, N.J.

Jim was very talented, never bragged and seldom mentioned his many accomplishments. To Jim, these were just Services for the Profession and his many patients. He loved his family, was very proud of his Irish Heritage and enjoyed his many trips to Ireland to visit family.

Members of his family include his parents, Gerald and Joyce Riley of Dover; his brother, Gerald T. Riley and his wife, Karen of Barrington; his sisters, Raelene Riley and husband, Christopher Buchanan of Salem, N.H., Brenda Tirrell and husband, Loring of Durham and Sharon Ham and husband, Harold of Somersworth. Many beloved nieces and nephews also survive Jim: Ryan Sullivan Tirrell, Matthew Jamison Tirrell, Danika Ham, Taylor Ham, Brennan Riley, Amanda Riley, Shannon Riley, Kerry Riley and Riley Buchanan.

Relatives and friends may call Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover, N.H.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary Church, corner of Chestnut and Third Streets, Dover, with Rev. Fritz Cerullo, OSA, pastor as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, Dover.

A Scholarship Fund has been established in honor of Dr. Riley. Contributions may be made to James F. Riley Scholarship fund c/o: Jack Minteer, 129 Wilton Rd. Peterborough, N.H. 03458.

IDA MAY RICH
ST. ALBANS - A funeral service for Miss Ida May Rich was held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Brady & Levesque Chapel. Father Leonidas Laroche, pastor of St. Mary’s Church, officiated.

Those attending included representatives of Haven Health Care Center, former employees of Verdelle Village, E.C.F., The Montagne Farm, many nieces and nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews locally and from the Newport area.

Following Prayers of Committal by Father Laroche, interment was in the Rich family lot in Holy Cross Cemetery. A reception was held at the home of niece Stephanie Deso and Robert Walker.

BETTY S. MOSS
ST. ALBANS BAY - Betty S. Moss, 81, a longtime area resident, passed away early Sunday, Dec. 11, 2005, at the Haven Health Care Facility with her family at her side. She was born in White House Station, N.J. on July 11, 1924, the daughter of the late John J. and Lena (Orts) Swainbank. She was married to Jesse R. Moss Jr. who predeceased her on Feb. 25, 1991.

Betty and her mother, Lena operated a bakery at their home on Maquam Shore and for several years Betty worked for the Maquam Shore Store. She was a sales associate for the Fuller Brush Company and retired from the Central Vermont Railroad after 23 years of service as a clerk.

Survivors include her two sisters-in-law, Jean Swainbank of St. Albans and Alice Swainbank of Sheldon; her nieces, Carol Renkiewicz and her husband, Danny, Judy Hoben and her husband, Brian, and Shari Swainbank; her nephews, Daniel Swainbank and his wife, Lisa, Randy Swainbank and his wife, Molly and David Swainbank and his wife, Nancy; her step-niece, Karen Elwood and her husband, Steve; and her step-nephews, Wayne Russell and his wife, Jackie and Kevin Russell; and several grand nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband, Jesse, she was predeceased by her three brothers, Theodore Swainbank on Dec. 10, 1987, John Swainbank on Dec. 13, 1991, and Thomas Swainbank on Dec. 26, 1999; and a nephew, Kevin Swainbank on April 14, 1995.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, Dec. 18, 2005, at 3 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel, 87 South Main St., St. Albans with the Reverend Herman Benjamin, pastor of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, officiating. Betty's family will receive friends on Sunday from 2 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Interment will be next spring in the family lot at the St. Albans Bay Cemetery.

IDA MAY RICH
ST. ALBANS - Miss Ida May Rich, age 103, one of Franklin County’s oldest residents, died Sunday evening, Dec. 11, 2005, in the Haven Health Care Center. She had been a resident of Haven Health (formerly Verdelle Village) for the past 28 years.

Ida May was born in St. Albans Town on Nov. 20, 1902, oldest daughter of eight children born to Edward and Ida (Russell) Rich. Her entire life was spent caring for her siblings and other family members.

She is survived by several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews, to include her special caregiver’s niece Leeta and her husband, Roland Pion and her family; grand niece, Stephanie Deso and her husband, Robert Walker, their children Brendan, Zachary and Emily; Ida’s sister-in-law, Rose Richard, all of St. Albans; brother-in-law, Arnold Turcotte of Springfield, Mass. Besides her parents she was predeceased by all her siblings, Robert Rich, Norman Rich, Nellie Deso, Walter Rich, Velma Messick, Florence Turcotte and her twin sister Helen Rich.

Ida’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the faculty, staff and residents of Verdelle and Haven Health. They have been her “family” for over 28 years and are appreciated.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Brady & Levesque Chapel. Father Leonidas Laroche, pastor of St. Mary’s Church, will officiate. Friends may call at the funeral home, 86 South Main St., from 1 p.m. until the services. Interment will be in the Rich family lot in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home and Commemorative Services.

GERALD A. SEXTON
SHELDON - Gerald A. Sexton, 44, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2005, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

He was born on March 11, 1961, the son of James and Albertine (Lefebvre) Sexton, Sr. He was a graduate of Colchester High School and served in the National Guard.

He was employed by Benoures Plumbing and Heating. His skills and friendship will be missed by many in the building trades community. He enjoyed the great outdoors, hunting with his friend Wesley, and watching NASCAR racing. In the past year he enjoyed the time spent with his grandson, Dillon, the apple of his eye.

He is survived by his wife, Staci (Fleury) Sexton of Sheldon; his sons, Jared and Nicholas Sexton of Sheldon; his daughter, Patricia Sexton and her fiancé, Tory Pray and grandson Dillon of Ogdensburg, N.Y.; his parents, James and Albertine Sexton, Sr.; his brothers James Sexton Jr. and his wife, Anita, Alan Sexton and his wife, Linda, Scott Sexton and his wife, Laura; his sisters, Joanne Willey and her husband, Arthur, Karen Downs and her husband, Scott; sisters-in-law, Kim and Kelly Fleury; and many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005, at the Ready Funeral Home, South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Rd., Burlington. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, Dec. 15, from 12 p.m. until the time of the service.

Donations in Gerald’s memory may be sent to the charity of ones choice for mental health.

Arrangements are in the care of the Ready Funeral & Cremation Services.
