GLADYS E. RATTA
NORTH HERO / GRAND ISLE - The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at 11 a.m. from St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Grand Isle. Father Lawrence P. Ridgley, pastor of the Lake Champlain Islands Roman Catholic Parishes, was the celebrant and homilist. Concelebrating was Father Bernard J. Bechard, SSE pastor of St. Anthony Parish in Sheldon Springs and St. Mary Mission in Franklin. Gerard Grenon and John Fahey served as Ministers of the Altar. Music was provided by guitarists and soloists, Amy and David Parker.
The White Funeral Pall was draped over Gladys’ casket by her nieces, Donna Lewis and Penny Young. Niece, Juanita Ratta placed the Crucifix. Readings from both The Old and New Testament were proclaimed by Gerard Grenon. The Prayers of the Faithful were read by John Fahey. Nieces, Marquita Deyo, Shelby Roberts and Penny Young presented The Offertory Gifts.
Among the delegations in attendance were representatives from the North Hero Volunteer Fire Department, Grand Isle Rescue, and Aqua Vista. Interment followed in the Ratta family lot in Jerusalem Cemetery North Hero with Father Ridgley assisted by Father Bechard reading the committal prayers.
The bearers, all great nephews, were Fred Mashtare, Scott Mashtare, Joseph Deyo, Chris Roberts, Robert Miller and Grant Lewis, Jr.
Following The Prayers of committal a Bereavement Luncheon was served for family and friends at the North Hero Fire Department hosted by the members.

BARBARA STEVENS TROMBLEY
ST. ALBANS - A Service of Worship in Celebration and Thanksgiving for the life of Barbara Stevens Trombley, who passed away on Jan. 22, 2006, was held on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel with The Reverend Judith Kennedy, Pastor of the First Congregational Church of St. Albans, officiating. Organist and vocalist was Claire Chevalier Hungerford. A great-grandson, David Peach, offered a reading of “The Indian Prayer.”
In attendance were representatives of the King’s Daughters Home on Rugg Street and several Smith Street and Bishop Street neighbors.
Spring interment will be in the family lot at Greenwood Cemetery.
The Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., assisted the family in arrangements.

PAUL A. ‘YOUNGIE’ YOUNG
WESTFIELD, Mass. — Paul A. “Youngie” Young, 61, of Westfield, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, at home.

He was born on Dec. 29, 1944 in Swanton, Vt. to the late Roland and Andrena (Gagne) Young.

Paul grew up in Swanton and was a 1962 graduate of St. Anne’s Academy. He has been a Westfield, Mass. resident for the past 37 years.

He worked at Missisquoi Paper in Sheldon, Vt. for six years and worked at Ahlstrom Fiber, the former C.H. Dexter, for 28 years, where he was a tower boss.

He was a parishioner of St. Mary’s Church and a member of the Wesfield Sportsman’s Club. He was a member of the Dexter Bowling Team at Bradley Bowl. Paul was an avid hunter, enjoyed camping, crossword puzzles and spending time with family in his dune buggy and Bucket T. Roadster.

Paul leaves his wife of 40 years, Lois J. (Cusson) Young; his daughters Roxanne L. Sabonis and Paula J. Young; his grandchildren, Brittany and Austin Sabonis and Faith Young, all of Westfield; his brother Louis Young of Highgate, Vt.; his sisters Theresa Geraw of Quebec, Canada, and Cecile Collins of Albany, N.Y.

Paul was pre-deceased by his infant son, Kirk Young, in 1967.

The funeral for Paul will be Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, Bartlett St. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Westfield.

Calling hours will be Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. Donations in memory of Paul may be made to the Noble VNA and Hospice, 77 Mill St., Westfield, MA, 01085.

GARY W. LaROCQUE
Highgate Center / Swanton - The Liturgy of Christian Burial was concelebrated Thursday, January 26, 2006, at 11 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Swanton. Father Maurice U. Boucher, SSE was the principle celebrant and homilist. Concelebrating was Father John J. Meagher, SSE. The Reverend Mr. Alan Vincelette assisted as Deacon. Music was provided by organist and soloist, Mary Jo Gillilan. The Funeral Procession was escorted from the funeral home to the church by Deputy Thomas Billows of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department. A guard of honor was formed by members Missisquoi Valley Rescue, Franklin County Sheriff’s Department and Missisquoi Valley Union High School Special Education Department. The White Funeral Pall was draped over Gary’s casket by his sisters, Rita Dean and Lura Messier. His wife Evangeline then placed the crucifix. The first reading from The Old Testament was proclaimed by brother-in-law, Bernard Messier and the second reading from The New Testament by Evangeline’s son Matthew Malaney. The Offertory gifts were presented by grandchildren, April Tatkis, Alisha Graves, Ashley LaRocque, Jordan LaRocque, Cody LaRocque, Gabrielle Anderson and Savina Adkins. Following communion Special Words of Remembrance were shared by family friend, Michael Ryan. Among the many delegations in attendance were representatives from, Ben and Jerry’s, H. M. Wagner & Sons, IT Systems, Department G.W.C.A., L.G. Printing, W.R.I., The Handy Group, New England Central Railroad, Swanton Village and Town Offices, Highgate Town Offices, T.D. Banknorth Wealth Management, United States Department of Homeland Security U.S. Customs Service, Saint Albans City Police Department, Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, Missisquoi Valley Rescue, Desorcie’s Market, O.C. McQuin and Sons, Grand Avenue Enterprises, M&T Sand and Gravel, Vermont Arts Council, Office of Doctor Ned Shulman and the Roman Catholic Parish Communities of Saint Amadeus, Nativity and Saint Louis.. The bearers were Evangeline’s son, Mark Malaney; grandsons Jordan and Cody LaRocque; nephews, Eric Severy, Tony Severy, Joey Severy, Levi Dean, and Travis Fraties. Following the liturgy Full Military Honors were accorded the deceased by members of the Vermont Air National Guard, 158th Honor Guard Team. Officer in Charge was Major Melvin Terry. Members of the Color Guard were MSGT Dottie Kirby and MSGT Sharon Erickson. Members of the Firing Party included, Chief MSGT Kenneth Johnson, SSGT Kenneth Johnson, TSGT Chad Mullerhill, MSGT Scott Robbins and Senior MSGT Scott Valley. Bugler, Chief MSGT Kenneth Johnson sounded Taps. The American Flag which draped the Vietnam and Operation Desert Storm veterans casket was folded by, SSGT A.J. Masterson and presented to Gary’s wife Evangeline by, Major Melvin Terry. At the conclusion of the military services a Bereavement Luncheon was served for family and friends in the Nativity Parish Center hosted by Pauline Schettini. It should be noted that among Gary’s surviving grandchildren are Joshua, Jayla and Malayna and great grandchildren, Alisha, Lilliane and Demitrios.

MAUDE G. SALISBURY

RICHFORD - Maude G. Salisbury, age 92, passed away Tuesday morning Jan. 24, 2006 at Our Lady of the Meadows in Richford. Born Nov. 11, 1913 in Sutton, Quebec she was the daughter of the late Homer & Mabel (Parsons) Flannery.
Maude graduated from Mont Royal Business College in Montreal, Quebec, Class of 1933. She married Clair Salisbury July 3, 1935 and they had two sons. Maude lived on the family farm in Berkshire for 30 years prior to making her home in Richford, where she and her husband owned and operated the Towne Shoppe from 1969 to 1979. She was an active member of the Richford United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women’s Society. Maude was a loving and dear mother, grandmother, great grandmother and a guiding light for everyone that knew her.
She is survived by her two sons, Douglas Salisbury and his wife Evangeline of Richford, and V. John Salisbury of Burlington; one granddaughter, Jill Kale and her husband Joseph of Potomac, MD; 2 great grandchildren, Erin & Joey Kale. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband Clair K. Salisbury; her brother, Homer Flannery; and her sister, Eileen Flannery.
A memorial service will be held Friday afternoon Jan. 27, 2006 at 2 p.m. at the Richford United Methodist Church with Pastor Heidi Reinker officiating. Interment will take place next spring in the Hillside Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours.

ADELARD “PETE” BEDARD

MILTON — Adelard “Pete” Bedard, 84, died peacefully Tuesday afternoon Jan. 24, 2006 at his home on Middle Road, surrounded by his loving family.
Pete was born in Winooski on Sept. 19, 1921, the son of Azellus and Hortenze (Poulin) Bedard. He was married to Ethel Gardner on Dec. 15, 1942 in the United Methodist Church in Burlington.
During WWII, Pete served with the U.S. Army, rising to Corporal, with much time spent as a translator.
He was employed by Vermont Gas Company for many years as a welder.
Mr. Bedard had many interest. He was very proud of his family especially his grandchildren, He loved hunting, fishing and playing scratch off tickets.
In addition to Ethel, his wife of over 63 years, Pete is survived by his daughter-in-law Patsy Bedard of Milton, who was married to eldest son Ronald “Joe” Bedard, who died in 2001; by his son Edward “Buzz” Bedard and his wife Lile of Milton and grandchildren Rebekah, Danielle, Lucy (Katie) and Emily, and 5 great grandchildren; by his daughter Linda Forgan and her husband Clayton Sr., and grandchildren Cheri, Michelle, Clayton Jr., and Nicole and six great grandchildren; by his daughter Penny DeBono and her husband Jay of South Hero and grandchildren Erin, Jonathan and Peter; and by his daughter Jackie Shanahan and her husband John of Stanford, Conn., and grandson Johnny, by three sisters in Canada and several nieces, nephews and his dog Shelby.
In addition to his son Joe, Pete was predeceased by five brothers and sisters.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday Jan. 28, 2006 at 10 a.m. in the United Church of Milton.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Champlain Valley, a program of the Visiting Nurse Association, 1110 Prim Road, Suite 1, Colchester, Vt., 05446. At Pete’s request, there will be no visiting hours. Arrangements are by the Minor Funeral Home of Milton.

EDWILDA L., O’BRIEN
ST. ALBANS, ALBUQUEQUE, N.M.  Mrs. Edwilda L. O’Brien, age 90, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006, in the Rio Rancho Rehab and Nursing Center, in Albuquerque, following an extended illness.
She was born in Georgia, Vt., Oct. 14, 1915, daughter of the late Alcide and Clara (Ferland) St. Denis.
For 19 years, she was employed by H. P. Hood Company, as the chief clerk. She was married to Leonard Cote who was killed in action in World War II, Dec. 18, 1944.
She later married Donald “Pat” O’Brien who predeceased her on Jan. 8, 1975.
She was a communicant of Holy Angels Church, a member of the Ladies of St. Anne, American Legion, Green Mountain Auxiliary Unit # 1, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Robert E. Glidden Auxiliary Unit # 758 and the Franklin County Senior Citizens. Six years ago she moved to Albuquerque to be near her daughter and family.

Her survivors include her daughter Pamela and son-in-law Ramon Pacheco of Albuquerque, N.M.; her son J. Michael and daughter-in-law Priscilla O’Brien of Chesterfield, N.H.; four grandchildren and their spouse’s Christopher and Geri Pacheco, Shannon and Patrick Trujillo, Sean and Nancy O’Brien and Erin O’Brien; four great-grandchildren Amanda Pacheco, Jake Trujillo, Casey-Rae Trujillo and Ian O’Brien; a sister Sister Rolande St. Denis of Manchester, N.H.; two sisters-in-law Colleen Jaibur and Eleanor O'Brien both of St. Albans, and Ellen St. Denis of Arroyo Grande, Calif.; several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, Leonard, and husband, Donald “Pat, ” Edwilda was predeceased by her sisters Alcina Thibault and Rita Gillespie and brothers Fernand St. Denis and Urgel St. Denis.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Holy Angels Church, St. Albans, at a time and date to be announced in June, 2006. Interment will follow at that time in the O’Brien family lot in Holy Cross Cemetery. THOMAS F. MIKAN
ST. ALBANS — Thomas F. Mikan, 63, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Monday, January 20, 2006. He was born in Reading, Pennsylvania on April 2, 1942, the son of the late Frank and Marie (Badorek) Mikan.
He served his country in the United States Air Force and was Honorably Discharged in 1980 as a Master Sergeant. Tom was employed by the Vermont Department of Corrections as a counselor
retiring in 2001 after 20 years of services. He was a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America; Northwestern Vermont Chapter #753, the National Rifle Association, Green Mountain Post # 1, American Legion and Robert E. Glidden Post # 758, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his sons; Derek McKusick of San Francisco, California, SFC, Jason Scott Mikan of Phenix City, Alabama, his two daughters; Kim Pope of Hurricane, Utah and Brandi McKusick of Hurricane, Utah, two brothers; Joseph Mikan of Rocky Hill, Connecticut and Richard Mikan of Cromwell, Connecticut, eleven grandchildren; Morgan Milne, Lauren Pope, Jordan Pope, Breanne Pope, Kamrynn Pope, Madison Pope, Arryn Pope, Devon Pope, Avrie Pope, Christian McKusick and Arianna McKusick and many friends and extended family.
A service of remembrance will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2006, at 10 a.m.. in the Heald Funeral Chapel, 87 South Main St, St. Albans. Tom_s family will receive friends on Saturday from 9:00 AM until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Tom’s name may be made to the Vietnam Veterans of America, P.O. BARBARA STEVENS TROMBLEY
ST. ALBANS — Barbara Stevens Trombley, 86, a longtime area resident, passed away on Sunday January 22, 2006, at the King's Daughters Home following a brief illness. She was born in Washington, D.C. on February 7, 1919, the daughter of the late Arthur and Marion (Bostwick) Stevens. On June 27, 1946, she married Donald F. Trombley, who predeceased her on January 30, 1983.
Barbara has lived in St. Albans since 1922, was a 1937 graduate of Bellows Free Academy, and a member of the First Congregational Church. She was employed at DCAS in Burlington, retiring in 1980.
Survivors include a son, Timothy P. Trombley of St. Albans; a granddaughter and her husband Lori and Joe Peach, and a great grandson, David Peach all of Austin Texas; two sisters, Jane Spratt of Chicago, Illinois and Elizabeth Hagan of Louisville, Kentucky; and a dear friend, Kay Ede of St. Albans. Besides her parents and husband Donald, she was predeceased by a son, David B. Trombley in 2004 and a daughter-in-law Lynn L. Trombley in 1999.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2006, at 3 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel, 87 South Main St. The Reverend Judy Kennedy, Pastor of the First Congregational Church, will officiate. Spring interment will be in the family lot at Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the Heald Funeral home on Saturday from 1 p.m. until the hour of the funeral. GLADYS E. RATTA
NORTH HEO — Gladys E. Ratta, 90, a lifelong resident of the North Hero community died Monday morning, January 23, 2006, at Redstone Villa in Saint Albans City.
Born in North Hero on, April 22, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Sr. and Delia (Poquette) Ratta.
She attended schools in North Hero and in 1941 became associated with New England Telephone as a switchboard operator and retired after twenty-six years of service. She was a devoted parishioner of Saint Benedict's Roman Catholic Church and enjoyed playing Bingo.
Gladys leaves one brother, Donald Ratta of Burlington; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Grace Ratta of North Hero; nieces and nephews, Bill Oryell of Castleton, New York, Gary Ratta and his wife Eleanor of North Hero, Shelby Roberts of Colchester, Roland Ratta and his wife Maxine of Waukegan, Illinois, Donna Lewis and her husband Grant of Huntington, Penny Young and her husband Gerald of Milton, Juanita Ratta of South Burlington and Marquita Deyo and her husband Steven of Alburg as well as many great nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by three sisters, Bonner Ratta, Margaret Oryell and Jennie Frechette and two brothers, Joseph and Vernon Ratta.
The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, January 28, 2006, at 11 a.m. from Saint Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Grand Isle. Father Lawrence P. Ridgley will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in the Ratta family lot in Jerusalem Cemetery North Hero. Friends may call at Saint Joseph's Church prior to the funeral on Saturday morning beginning at 10 a.m. Gifts in Gladys memory may be made to Saint Benedict's Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, North Hero, 05474.

REGINA STEWARD
FT. WALTON BEACH, Fla./RICHFORD — Regina Stewart passed away at Ft. Walton Beach Florida Hospital after a brief illness. She was born in Highgate, Vt. on Nov. 17, 1924. Gina is the daughter of the late Clyde and Evelyn Johnson. She retired from Civil Service in Massachusetts and retured to her hometown of Richford. She was residing in Ft. Walton Beach, Fla. for the past year.
Regina enjoyed traveling across the U.S. and Canada as well as Germany, England, and Puerto Rico. Gena also loved to read, do crossword and jig saw puzzles, loved dancing and music. She was so very proud of her two grandchildren.
Regina is survived by her son Michael Stewart and his wife Lynn of North Gramby, Conn., her two grandchildren Ross and Gwen Stewart, her two sisters Donna Ryea and her husband Richard of Richford, Vt., Esther Combs and her husband Melvin of Richford, three nieces, Lonnie Oertli and husband Roger of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, Linda Richard and husband Robert of Moretown, Vt., Lesley Combs of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, three nephews, Randall Ryea and wife Cindy of St. Albans, Douglas Ryea and wife Kim of Swanton, and Jason Combs of Richford. In keeping with her wishes she was cremated with no services.

GARY W. LaROCQUE
HIGHGATE CENTER — Gary W. LaRocque, 63, a native of Swanton and more recently of Highgate Center died Saturday evening, Jan. 21, 2006, in the Fletcher Allen Health Care Facility in Burlington surrounded by his loving family.
Born in St. Albans, Vt. on, Aug. 29, 1942, he was the son of Clarence Raymond and Rhoda Mae (Bessette) LaRocque. He received his early education from St. Anne’s Academy in Swanton and continued in the U.S. Air Force Basic Training and Police School at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas; The New Jersey Police Academy in chemical testing in Freehold, N.J.; the Air University in criminology at Maxwell Air force Base, Ala. and received his Bachelor Degree in Business Administration from Columbia State University. Gary served several years with both the St. Albans City Police and Franklin County Sheriff’s Departments.
Gary had a great love and passion for airplanes and flying. In addition to holding a pilot’s license he served several years as a consultant for Pratt and Whitney Aircraft in Plattsburgh, N.Y., was director of Operations for Global Aviation in Rome, N.Y., Consultant-Tech Writer for Maintenance-One Aircraft Service Company in Oklahoma, chief executive officer for Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Company in Oklahoma, vice president-director of Operations for Aerial Airport, Inc. in Alabama, owner –operator Green Mountain Air Services, FAA Part 135 in Vermont and was general manager of the Franklin County Airport in Swanton-Highgate Vermont. He was also associated with the New England Central Railroad as operations assistant in Massachusettes and mechanical administrator in Vermont.
Gary loved his family and enjoyed breaking bread and sharing a cup of coffee with anyone who wanted to visit. Gary was a parishioner of St. Amadeus Roman Catholic Church in Alburgh.

He faithfully served his country for many years in both the U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard beginning in 1959 and was honorably discharged as a SSGT on May 30 1978. He was a veteran of both the Vietnam Era and Operation Desert Storm.

On Nov. 6, 1999 he married Evangeline Tremblay-Malaney of Highgate Center who survives him. Gary also leaves his children, Sheila LaRocque of Edmond, OK, Natalie LaRocque-Bouchard and husband Christopher of Franklin, Brigitte LaRocque-Anderson of Luther, OK, Davina LaRocque of Baltimore, MD and Raquel Najera and husband Skeff Flynn of Washington, DC; Evangeline’s children, Mark Malaney and wife Kendra of Mesa, AZ, Matthew Malaney and wife Jennifer of Colchester and Michelle Solomon and husband Michael of Charlotte; grandchildren, April, Alicia, Sylina, Ashley, Jordan, Christopher, Cody, Gabrielle, Savina, Joshua and Jayla Malayna; great grandchildren, Lillian, Raven, Andrew and Demetrious; brothers and sisters, Rosalie Severy of Highgate, Raymond LaRocque and wife Lisa of St. Albans and North Bay Ontario, Lawrence LaRocque and wife Elaine of St. Albans, Lura Messier and husband Bernard of Alburg and Rita Dean and husband William of St. Albans; brother-in-law and sisters- in- law, Norma LeBlanc of St. Albans, Jocelin and Madeleine Tremblay of Essex Center, Isabelle Junod of Terryville, Conn. and Charlotte Tremblay of Sunapee, N.H. as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

He was predeceased by his father, Clarence “Lefty” LaRocque, and brothers-in-law, Douglas Severy, Antonio “Tony” Tremblay and Andrew LeBlanc.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial with full military honors will be celebrated Thursday, Jan. 26, 2006 at 11 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada St., Swanton. Father Maurice U. Boucher, SSE will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will take place later in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton on Wednesday evening Jan. 25, 2006, from 7 to 9 p.m. Gifts in Gary’s memory may be made to, Missisquoi Valley Rescue, P.O. Box 22, Swanton 05488 or to the American Cancer Society, 11 Loomis St. Montpelier 05602.

VIRGINIA ADAMS PATNO
GRAND ISLE - Virginia Adams Patno, 72, died unexpectedly early Saturday morning, Jan. 21, 2006, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.
Ginny was born on Sept. 7, 1933, in Milton, Vt., the daughter of Gordon and Florence (Parker) Adams. She graduated from Milton High School in 1951. On Dec. 16, 1955, she married Elon Patno in Milton. Virginia worked for the Mary Fletcher, and for a short time operated a bakery from her home in Grand Isle. She was well known for her wedding cakes. Ginny had a great love for her dogs and gardening, she especially enjoyed working in her flowerbeds. Her best times were spent with her friends and family.

Ginny is survived by her husband of more than 50 years, Elon, of Grand Isle; by her sons, Paul Patno and his fiancé, Cathy Crowley of South Hero, and Glenn Patno and his wife, Tina of Grand Isle; by nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; her sister, Ruth Barrows and her husband, Robert of Milton; and by several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her son, Lance Eric Patno in 1960; by her brothers, Lyndon and Ken Adams; and her sister, Marion Blow.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006, at 10 a.m. in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Assoc., P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, Ohio, 44720.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday, Jan. 23, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton.
