CHESTER C. ‘CHET’ SWEET
SHELDON SPRINGS - Chester C. “Chet” Sweet, 59, a resident of Mill Street in Sheldon Springs, passed away unexpectedly at home on Friday afternoon, Jan. 6, 2006.

Chet was born on July 21, 1946, in East Franklin, Vt., the son of Elvin G. and Zoa (Wright) Sweet. In his early years he did some farming but was truly a lifelong shade tree mechanic.

Chet worked for Doug Kittell from 1970 to 1981 and Preston Hall from 1981 to 1990. In 1990, Chet opened Sweet’s Muffler, which he operated until the time of his death. For the past five years he had also worked as a carrier and hauler for the Burlington Free Press.

Work was Chet’s greatest enjoyment but he also loved baseball and for several years managed the Enosburg Senior Men’s Baseball Team. He also enjoyed NASCAR racing, especially Mark Martin and Rusty Wallace.

Chet is survived by his wife, Sharlene Ann (Cramer) Sweet of Sheldon Springs; a son and his wife, Eric K. and Connie Sweet of Enosburg and their daughters Cortney, Catherine, Meggan, Marguerite (Maggie) and a little girl due in February; a daughter and her husband, Kandi and John Morris of Sheldon Springs and their daughters Ember and Janessa; three brothers: Melvin Sweet of Enosburg, Herbert Sweet of Sheldon and Edward Sweet and his wife, Sherry of St. Albans; two sisters: Mildred Blanchard and her husband, Steven of Enosburg and Doris Wedge and her husband, Kevin of Addison; his brothers and sisters-in-law: Mike and Debbie Rising of Georgia, Gloria Witcopp and her fiancee, Carol Ashley of Texas, Kenneth and Connie Kyle of New York, John and Trish Haney of New York, James and Sarah Haney of New Jersey and Ellen Smith of New York; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Chet will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2006, at 3 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home in Enosburg with Pastor Patrick Hoadley officiating. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2 to 3 p.m. Interment will take place in the spring in the East Franklin Cemetery.

Should friends desire memorial gifts in Chet’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

DORIS M. O’CONNOR
SHELDON - Doris M. O’Connor died at her son, Robert O’Connor’s home on Sunday, Jan. 8, 2006, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born in Fletcher on Sept. 8, 1917, the daughter of the late Eugene and Stella (Gover) Nolin.

Doris graduated from Winooski High School, married Clement Yandow, was widowed and later married Roderick O’Connor from Buffalo, N.Y., who predeceased her in 1981.

She is survived by her five sons: Robert Yandow and his wife, Shirley of Los Gatos, Calif., Clement Yandow and his wife, Carol of East Barre, Roderick O’Connor and his wife, Pauline of Clermont, Fla., Robert O’Connor and his wife, Lisa of Sheldon, and Billy O’Connor of Williston; her brother, Delmas Nolin and his wife, Lois of Manchester, Conn.; and many grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Doris will always be remembered for her loving devotion to raising her special son, Billy. She raised and loved him unconditionally and set in place plans to insure he would be well cared for when she would eventually not be able to.

The family would like to give special thanks to Lisa O’Connor for providing her with 24-hour care in her home since April of last year.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, Jan. 13, 2006, at 11 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church, Church Road, Fairfield, with the Reverend Joseph T. Sullivan celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in the family lot in Resurrection Park in South Burlington. Doris’ family will receive friends on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St. Albans.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Champlain Vocational Services, 77 Hegeman Avenue, Colchester, Vt. 05495.

DOROTHY E. PERRY
SHELDON - Dorothy E. Perry, age 67, wife of Gardner Perry, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, at the Casa Grande Regional Medical Center in Casa Grande, Ariz. with her loving family at her side.

She was born April 3, 1938, in Burlington, Vt., the daughter of the late Richard and Lillian (Mable) Combs.

Dorothy was employed as a dietary aide at Verdelle Village Nursing Home in St. Albans for 13 years retiring in 2003. She was a member of the Women of the Moose Club 1090 in St. Albans. Along with her husband Gardner, Dorothy loved to travel, camp and visit friends around the country including Alaska. She also leaves many friends in Picacho, Ariz., who will miss her dearly.

Dorothy’s greatest love was spending time with her husband, children and their families. She has been loved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed especially by her family.

She is survived by her husband, Gardner Perry of Sheldon; her children and their families: Cindy DiBattista and her husband, Raymond of St. Cloud, Fla., Debra Pohlman and her partner, Steve Branon of Fairfield, Gardner Perry Jr. and his wife, Kathy of Killingworth, Conn., James Perry and his wife, Deb of Alburg, and Jeffrey Perry and his wife, Ellie of Richford; 20 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; her sister, Gladys Dostie of Winooski; and several nieces and nephews in Vermont and Connecticut. She was predeceased by her father, Richard Combs; her mother, Lillian (Mable) Combs Bertrand; an infant grandson, Anthony Espisito in 2001; and a sister, Rosalie Hogue.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2006, at 11 a.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls. Interment will be held next spring in the Sheldon Village Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be held Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home in Enosburg.

KAREN LYNN MAGNAN
FAIRFIELD - Largely attended funeral services for Karen Lynn Magnan, who passed away on Jan. 1, 2006, were held on Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with the Reverend W. Andre' Houle, a former Pastor of St. Patrick’s Church, celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial, assisted by Father Joseph T. Sullivan, Pastor of St. Patrick’s Church. Music was by Claire Chevalier Hungerford, organist and vocalist, with solos by Karen Casavant and John Schreindorfer. Ushers were Robert Norris, Harold and Bet Howrigan, Susan Rainville, and Thomas Howrigan. Parking attendants were Richard Howrigan, Thomas Branon and Kevin Michael Howrigan.

The White Funeral Pall was placed on Karen’s casket by her children, Shannon, Thomas, and Maria, and the crucifix was placed by her husband, Joseph. Scriptures were proclaimed by Sarianna Crook and Patricia Reynolds. Father Houle was the homilist and also proclaimed the Gospel. The Prayer of the Faithful was offered by Karen’s aunt, Mary Bates. Karen’s sister, Debra Crook read a poem she wrote for Karen and Father Houle read a poem written by her brother, Jeffrey Benjamin.

Offertory gifts were presented at the altar by Joseph’s parents, Henry and Loretta Magnan. Ministers of Communion were Mary Schreindorfer, Sarah Menard, Lynn and Jo Lumbra, Deborah Maynard and Virginia Howrigan as well as Fathers Houle and Sullivan. For the processional, an honor guard was formed by several of Karen and Joseph’s cousins.

Casket Bearers were Karen’s brothers, Stephen, Jeffrey and Timothy Benjamin; and brothers-in-law, Mark, Peter and Matthew Magnan.

In attendance were representatives of Rehab Services, Staff and good friends from Fletcher Allen Health Care, Chittenden County Hospice, Surgical Services, Fairfield Trotters Basketball Team, Blue Seal Feeds, Northwest Veterinary Associates, The staff, faculty, students, PTO and School Board of Fairfield Center School, UVM Extension Service, Franklin County 4-H, Wrightholm Farm, Inc., St. Albans Cooperative Creamery and Coop YC’s, Ag-Venture, Clarence Brown, Inc., Bourdeau Bros., Inc., Bousquet’s, Chris Reed Construction, Nicor Corp, Northeast Financial Services, Connor Contracting, Northeast Aggregate Corp. and several area dairy farm families.

Entombment followed to await burial this spring in the family lot in East Franklin Cemetery. Following the Mass, a luncheon was served by parishioners of St. Patrick’s in the church hall.

Karen’s family was assisted by the Heald Funeral Home of St. Albans.

JUNE STATA LABOMBARD
ALBURGH - The Burial Office and Holy Eucharist - Rite II was celebrated Friday, Jan. 6, 2006, at 1 p.m. from Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Swanton Village. The Right Reverend Thomas C. Ely, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Vermont was the celebrant. Other participating priests were, The Reverend Benjamin Chase serving as preacher, The Reverend Thora Chadwick, Gospeller and The Reverend Reid Farrell assisting as the Bishop’s Chaplain. Also present was The Venerable Wallace Sparling and The Reverend Marcheta Townsend. Music was provided by organist, Robert Guerrina, and special music was offered by great-grandchildren, Beckie and Lucas Bull.

The White Funeral Pall was draped over June’s casket by her children, The Reverend Molly Comeau, Patti Helfrich, Susan Bacon and Stephen Stata. Granddaughters, Rachel Comeau and Tara Couture served as Lectors. Oblation Bearers were granddaughters, Sarah Bacon and Shannon Stata. Among the many delegations in attendance were representatives from the Episcopal Diocese of Vermont, The Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington, Grand Isle and Franklin County Supervisory Union Office of the Superintendent of Schools, Missisquoi Valley Union High School, Alburg and Highgate Elementary Schools, Mary S. Babcock and Swanton Central Schools, Northwestern Medical Center including the Board of Directors, Alburgh Town and Village Offices, Alburgh Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, Alburgh Library Association, Alburgh Cemetery Association, Alburgh and Isle La Motte Historical Societies, Island In The Sun Senior Citizens, Franklin and Grand Isle County Agency on Aging, Visiting Nurse Association, Hospice of the Champlain Valley, Grand Isle County Court, United States Department of Homeland Security, Chittenden Bank, Vermont Precision Tools, Hero’s Welcome, Hall’s Apple Orchard, Trade Point, Cianbro, Christopher’s Advertising, A.N. Deringer, Inc., and the parish communities of St. Luke’s Holy Trinity, St. Amadeus and Nativity and Isle La Motte United Methodist.

Spring interment will take place in the Stata family lot in Bush Cemetery Alburgh.

The bearers, all grandsons, were Vaughn Comeau, Andy Comeau, Cush Helfrich, Travis Bacon, Josh Bacon, Jeremy Bacon, Chad Ewald and Trever Ewald.

Following the services a Bereavement Luncheon for family and friends was served in the Holy Trinity Parish Center hosted by The Ladies of Holy Trinity.

LAWRENCE ‘BUDDY’ GODIN
RICHFORD - Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006, at 10 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church in Richford with Revs. Frank Eksterowicz and Leonidas Laroche, con-celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Organist/Soloist was Claire Hungerford. Altar server was Mr. Godin’s grandnephew, Christian Godin.

The pall was draped on the casket by his children, Michael Godin, Diane Murray and Steven Godin. Scripture readings were proclaimed by his niece, Janice Godin. His grandchildren, Jeffrey and Jason Murray, Stacey and Ryan Godin, and Jessica and Gabrielle Godin, presented the communion gifts as well as a crucifix and three roses, which were placed on his casket. Following the Homily by Fr. Laroche an eternal candle was lit by his daughter, Diane Murray.

Interment will be held next spring in All Saints Cemetery in Richford. Following the Mass a gathering was held at Dorion Hall. Pallbearers were his Godsons, Guy Paul, Alfred Gendron, Julian Desnoyers, Richard Godin, Jason Murray and representing his father, Samuel Gendron Jr.

In attendance were delegations from the Knights of Columbus Council 2610, Sticks & Stuff, Card Club, and Shelburne Farms.

Visiting hours were held Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home in Enosburg Falls where a Knights of Columbus prayer service was held at 8 p.m.

Spears Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements.

JUDY O. WELLS
SHELDON VILLAGE - Funeral Services were held Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006, at 11 a.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home in Swanton. Father John J. Meagher, SSE pastor of The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Swanton and St. Louis Roman Catholic Parish, Highgate Center officiated. Music was provided by guitarist and soloist, Gail Perras. Special Words of Remembrance were shared by longtime family friend Ann Cook and grandson, Justin Wells.

Among the delegations in attendance were representatives from Peerless Clothing, Mylan Technologies, USSA, Sheldon Town Offices, Vermont Federal Credit Union, The Abbey Group, Sheldon Elementary School and the United States Department of Homeland Security.

Interment will take place in the spring at the Wells family lot in the Sheldon Village Cemetery.

The bearers were her sons, Kirk and Tyson Wells; grandson, Justin Wells; son-in-law, Mike Butcher; and family friends, Teddy Cook and John Reed.

Following the services a Bereavement Luncheon for family and friends was served at Judy’s late home on Main Street in Sheldon Village.

THELMA G. PION
FAIRFIELD - A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for Mrs. Thelma G. Pion on Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church. Father Joseph Sullivan was the celebrant. Organist was Dorothy Bedard and soloist was Constance O’Connell. The offertory gifts were presented by Hon. Richard and Kathleen Howrigan.

Attending were former owners and employees of the Cornerstone Restaurant, members of the Women of the Moose, Chapter 321, Asten Johnson Filaments, Pion Road neighbors and many parishioners of St. Patrick’s Church.

Bearers were her nephews, Ronald Minor, Steven Minor, Michael Pelkey, Scott Pelkey, Bernard Pion and Michael Varriole.

Interment will be next spring in the Pion family lot in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, at a time to be announced.

Friday afternoon, Father Sullivan held a Christian Wake Service with Thelma’s family and friends. In the evening the Women of the Moose, Chapter 321, of St. Albans, held a funeral ritual for a past member. The Senior Regent was Shirley Ovitt, Chaplain Barbara Bailey, Junior Regent Josephine Rocheleau, and the Junior Graduate Regent was Lucille Brown. Friday’s services were held during visitation in the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

IVA MAY RUSHFORD
GEORGIA - Funeral services for Iva May Rushford, who died on Dec. 29, 2005, were held on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, at the Georgia Plains Baptist Church with Pastor Charles Kuthe officiating. Organist was Alexis Bell, accompanying the Georgia Plains Baptist Church Choir singing the hymn “In the Garden.” The Reverend Phillip Chase sang the “Last Mile of the Way, ” accompanied by his wife Marion. Edmund Wilcox sang “Till We Meet Again.” Many friends and church members offered words of remembrance.

In attendance were representatives of Banner Grange, Georgia Center Market, Franklin County Home Health Agency, Georgia Volunteer Fire Department, Montcalm Real Estate, Georgia United Methodist Church, St. Albans Bay United Methodist Church, the United Christian Society of Belvidere Junction and Swanton Village employees.

Casket bearers were Iva’s grandsons: Kris Richards, Tim Greene, Jasper Rushford III, Tony Farrar, Jay Wright; and special friend, Michael Sweeney.

Interment followed in the family lot at Belvidere Center Cemetery with Pastor Kuthe conducting a committal service.

The family was assisted by the Heald Funeral Home of St. Albans.
