FRANK LESTER GREENE
GLASTONBURY, Conn. — Frank Lester Greene, husband and best friend for 58 years of Margery Anderson Greene, died peacefully and courageously at his home on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006, attended by his loving wife and two children. He was 78.

Frank was the son of Richardson L. Greene and Constance H. Greene, and the grandson of Frank L. Greene, a St. Albans native and U.S. Senator of Vermont.

He was born at Fort Banks in Winthrop, Mass. on Dec. 13, 1927. He graduated from Phillips Andover Academy and Yale College, Class of 1950. A member of the Greatest Generation, Frank served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After marrying Marge in 1951, he lived in Washington D.C., San Diego, Calif., and Long Island, N.Y., before moving permanently to Glastonbury in 1957, where he worked for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft for 32 years.

Frank was a man of many interests and extensive knowledge. "Learn to put things into historical perspective, " he believed, driving in part his strong interest in history - particularly military and aeronautical history - about which he collected and read thousands of books. In 1959, Frank co-founded the organization leading to today's New England Air Museum. He authored descriptive booklets and articles on various military aircraft. Frank was a small plane pilot, being certified by the Institute of Instrument and Radio Beam Flying. He was an avid astronomer, for example at one time taking a special telescope on a vacation to St. Johns UVI to view a solar eclipse. Frank enjoyed travel, and on his many cruises with his wife he could be found in the Crow's Nest of the ship with his GPS, binoculars, and maps, regaling fellow passengers with descriptions of passing areas and their historical significance.

Frank was an accomplished musician, and he loved to play his flute, early as a member of the Yale Marching Band and late in life when he resumed lessons. He enjoyed listening to a wide variety of music, including classical, jazz, and big band. Frank was also an amateur radio enthusiast, tuning in enthusiastically to short wave broadcasts or communication between commercial pilots and their radio tower. Frank's preferred version of instant messaging was telegraphic Morse Code sent over the radio, and he was a member of the Antique Wireless Association. Frank spoke near fluent German and French. He was a sports fan, whether writing articles about his son's Midget Football games, watching the N.Y. Giants, or enduring or rejoicing in the Boston Red Sox. And Frank was an outdoorsman, hunting ducks or deer (with a bow and arrow) as a young man or walking in the woods with a series of Labrador Retrievers that spanned most of his life, starting with Dan as a teenager and ending with his beloved "pups, " Skane and Anna, who survive him today.

As a result of his extensive interests and knowledge, a frequent response to any question in the Greene family was: "Ask Grampa, he'll know." But towering above Frank's interests and knowledge were his strength and influence as a husband, father, and grandfather. Surviving Frank are his wife, Margery Anderson Greene of Glastonbury; his daughter, Susan M. (and Neil) Smalheiser of Oak Park, Ill.; his son, Robert A. (and Brenda) Greene of Glastonbury; his grandchildren, Cassandra Avril and Anderson Jayce Greene, and Daniel Eric, Adam Knapp, and Emily Alice Smalheiser; and his sister, Susan Richards of Ossining, N.Y.

Frank L. Greene was a minority of one, distinguishing himself with his engaging sense of humor; his sense of appropriateness, proportion, and priority; his personal interests and his interest in others; and his substance and authenticity. Frank had so much to share. His family and friends sorely miss him, as we continue to live in a way that sustains his values and memory.

A luncheon and memorial gathering will be held on Sunday, March 26, 12:30 p.m. at the New England Air Museum in Windsor Locks (please see www.neam.org for directions). Friends and family are most welcome. Contributions in Frank Greene's memory may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project (please see www.woundedwarriorproject.org for online donations) or the Protector of Animals Association (POA, Box 24, South Glastonbury, CT 06073).
