IOLA N. WINEGAR
MILTON - Iola N. Winegar, 75, of McMullen Road, died peacefully Saturday evening, July 22, 2006, in the presence of her family at her home in Milton following a long illness.

Iola was born Aug. 21, 1930, in Milton, the daughter of the late Allyn and Mable Wells Devino. She attended schools in Milton and on Nov. 27, 1955, she married James Winegar in Monks Corner, S.C.

A lifelong resident of Milton, she was an avid outdoors person who loved working in her gardens and tending her flowers. She loved to watch for and listen to the sounds of the Cardinals as they sang their song while she worked. She enjoyed cooking, playing Bingo as well as playing a good hand of cards with others. While alone she liked to work on puzzles as well as puzzle books to pass the time away. A lover of Country Music, Iola also enjoyed watching as well as attending Rodeos where she especially enjoyed watching Bull Riding. She was much admired and will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her husband, Jim of Milton, to whom she was married to for over 50 years; and her children, Steven Germain and his wife, Nancy of Essex Junction, Doreen Sweeney and her husband, William of Canton, N.Y. and Bob Winegar and his wife, Lori of Milton; her 12 grandchildren; and her four sisters, Shirley Densmore of St. Albans, Lorraine Bedard and her husband, Paul of St. Albans, Corrine Butler and her husband, Lonnie of North Carolina and Joan Jenkins of Milton; as well as several nieces and nephews. As well as her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Mike Devino; and her sister, Delma Karko.

Iola's family wishes to extend sincere thanks to Dr. Chris Holmes of Fletcher Allen and the VNA Hospice team for all the kind and compassionate care extended to her during her illness.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, July 26, at 11 a.m. in the Minor Funeral Home with Father John Feltz officiating. Burial will follow in the Hope Cemetery in Georgia.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the VNA Hospice Program, 1110 Prim Road, Suite 1, Colchester, Vt. 05446.

Visiting Hours will be held on Tuesday, July 25, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. with prayers being offered by Father Feltz at 8:45 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home, Route 7 in Milton.

SUSAN ALICE HUBBARD
ENOSBURG FALLS / BENNINGTON - Susan Alice Hubbard, age 68, passed away after many years of illness Sunday morning, July 23, 2006, at her residence at the Crescent Manor Nursing Home in Bennington.
She was born July 17, 1938, in Enosburg Falls, the daughter of the late Guy and Elizabeth (Dennison) Hubbard.

She was a graduate of Enosburg Falls High School, Johnson State College and the Rhode Island School of Design. She was a teacher in the Vermont and Massachusetts school systems.

She is survived by her brother, Edward Hubbard and his wife, Kathryn of Southport, N.C.; a niece, Joann Archetto, her husband James, and their children, Ted and Peter of Blackstone, Mass.; and a nephew, David Hubbard of Alexandria, Va.

Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. There will be no visiting hours. Interment will be in the Hubbard family lot in the Enosburgh Center Cemetery.

For those who wish, contributions in Susan's memory may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Spears Funeral Home in Enosburg Falls is in charge of arrangements.

STUART H. CLOW
ST. ALBANS - Mr. Stuart H. Clow died on Sunday, July 23, 2006, at his home as a result of a recent stroke, with his family at his side. He was born on June 6, 1933, in Providence, R.I., the son of the late E. Mae (McIntyre) and John H. Clow. On May 24, 1954, in Providence, Stuart married his college sweetheart, Dorothy A. Little, who survives him.

Stuart grew up in Providence, R.I, and graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 1955 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He went to work in Manhattan as an engineer for Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company. Stuart then went on to work in 1959 for Phillip Genovese and Associates in New Haven, Conn. He worked for Eero Saarinen and Associates from 1962-1975, working on such projects as the Lincoln Center Theater, IBM egg for the World's Fair, the St. Louis Arch and many others. He worked as Office Engineer for the New Haven and Hartford Railroad, Conrail, and Amtrak. In 1981 he went to work for Yale University. Stuart and Dottie retired to Vermont in 1996.

Stuart loved the piano all his adult life and played at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Respite House, Franklin County Rehab, and the St. Albans Senior Center. They really enjoyed the repertoire of 'old songs.' Both Stuart and Dottie sang with the Grandmas and Grampas.

Stu loved the Lord and was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in St. Albans. All will miss him a great deal, but he leaves behind his example as a fine Christian man and his wonderful sense of humor.

In addition to his wife of fifty-two years, Dorothy of St. Albans; he leaves three daughters, Susan J. Carpenter and her husband, George of New Hartford, N.Y., June C. Burtis and her husband, William J. of Colchester, Conn. and Linda G. Watkins and her husband, Carl J. of Orange, Conn.; 12 grandchildren, Jason Carpenter, Matthew Carpenter, Sarah Carpenter, Maryann Bauer and her husband, David, Daniel Burtis, Michael Burtis, Christopher Burtis, Bryan Burtis, Nicolas Burtis, Kari Sue Watkins, Bryce Watkins and Grant Watkins; two great-grandchildren, David Bauer and Lucas Bauer; a sister, Norma B. Greene and her husband, the Reverend Everette H. Greene of Newport, R.I.; and a sister-in-law and brother-in-
law, Janet and Gary Bill of Newport News, Va.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 26, 2006, at 1 p.m. at the Trinity Presbyterian Church on South Main Street with Pastor Robert Bjerkaas officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in Greenwood Cemetery. There will be no public visitation.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity Presbyterian Church, 350 South Main St., St. Albans, Vt. 05478; or the ALS Association, Northern New England Chapter, Champlain Mill, 1 Main St. #13, Winooski, Vt. 05404.

RONALD JAMES HEMINGWAY, SR.
SWANTON - Funeral Services were held Friday, July 21, 2006, at 3 p.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home. Father John J. Meagher, SSE, pastor of The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Swanton and St. Louis Roman Catholic Parish Highgate Center officiated.

Private interment will take place later in the Hemingway family lot in The St. Albans Bay Cemetery.

LEONARD PAUL CLARK

SWANTON - Funeral Services were held Saturday, July 22, 2006, at 2 p.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home. Mr. Clarence Holmes of the Swanton Kingdom Hall of The Jehovah Witnesses assisted by Elder Richard Rossman led the service.
In attendance was a large delegation from the Swanton Kingdom Hall as well as Wood and Kidder, Inc., Swanton Cemetery Commission and friends and neighbors from the Church Street School Senior Apartments.

Interment followed in Riverside Cemetery with Mr. Holmes reading the committal prayers. The bearers were Wesley F. Kidder, Charles H. Prouty, Spencer Cline, Armand Chevriere, Jerry Yandow, Tony Baggerly and Arthur Goodhue.

RITA ROSE KRETOWICZ
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. / RICHFORD, Vt. l Rita Rose Kretowicz, 85, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died July 6, 2006, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital.

Born March 15, 1921, in Keene, N.H., she was a retired hair stylist who had resided with her husband and family in Richford, Vt. for 15 years while he served as a U.S. Immigration Inspector and Supervisory III at the local Border Crossing. She was a member of All Saints Catholic Church and its Ladies' organizations, and a member of the Richford Mother's Club before moving to Florida in 1984 when she became a member of St. Maximillian Kolbe Catholic Church.

She is survived by her children: son, Anthony J. and his wife, Esther of Lisbon, N.H., and a daughter, Mary Kretowicz of Littleton, N.H.; a brother, Paul Emmond of Keene, N.H.; seven grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Karol P. Kretowicz on Dec. 11, 1998.

A memorial mass was held at St. Barnard Catholic Church in Keene, N.H., followed by committal service at St. Joseph Cemetery in Keene.

TIMOTHY D. SMITH
WASHINGTON, DC - Timothy D. Smith, 78, died July 18, 2006, following a sudden illness. Mr. Smith was born on May 28, 1928, in St. Albans, Vt. to the late James Gregory Smith and Genevieve Babbitt Smith. He was the grandson and great-grandson of two Vermont Governors.

He was a graduate of Phillips Andover Academy (1947) and Yale University (1951) where he was a member of the Zeta Psi fraternity. After graduation from college, he volunteered with the U.S. Army and served two years in Korea.

Upon his return to the U.S., he attended Columbia Law School, then left to pursue a career in journalism. He worked for several years as a correspondent and editor for the Associated Press, primarily assigned to the Albany, N.Y. and Buffalo, N.Y. bureaus. He was one of a very few reporters who was granted an interview with J.D. Salinger.

He worked on the Congressional campaign for Abner Sibel (R-Conn.) and joined his congressional staff in 1961. He remained in Washington for the rest of his life, working as a congressional staffer for several congressmen, at the U.S. Department of Labor, and finishing his career as the Congressional Liaison for the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee under Senator Robert Stafford (R-Vt). Following his retirement in 1982, Mr. Smith spent his time with his family and enjoying his hobbies of cooking, reading, walking, and pursuing his lifelong love of writing.

He was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Marie Holmes Smith; a brother, John Gregory Smith.

HARRIET 'SUSIE' SOULE ARMSTRONG
GEORGIA - Mrs. Harriet "Susie" Soule Armstrong, 88, a lifelong area resident, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2006, at Northwestern Medical Center following a brief illness. She was born in Sheldon on Oct. 5, 1917, the daughter of the late Andrew J. and Teresa (Riley) Soule. She was the widow of Emmet L. "Jim" Armstrong, who died on Nov. 4, 1997.

Susie was a 1939 graduate of the St. Albans Hospital School of Nursing, the hospital where she was employed for 41 years as a registered nurse, retiring in 1980 as operating room nurse supervisor. She was an avid bridge player, a member of the Autonoe Club and the Tuesday and Wednesday morning Bridge Clubs.

Survivors include her two daughters, Patricia Gray and her husband, Quentin of St. Albans, and Pamela Posada and her special friend, Gerald Miles of Selah, Wash.; a son-in-law, Raymond L'Esperance of St. Albans; a brother, Arthur Soule of Montgomery Center; eight grandchildren, Leslie Rushlow, Julie McDonald, Phillip Posada, Susan Posada, Michael Posada, Carl L'Esperance, Kimberly Gray, and Kathleen Sparrow; 12 great-grandchildren; three very close friends, 'Bea' Butler, Marion Walsh, and Leona 'Noni' Samson; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, Emmet, she was predeceased by a daughter, Melanie "Jo" L'Esperance on Nov. 21, 2003; two sisters, Laura Crane and Ruth Benoit; and three brothers, Horace "Hoddie" Soule, Andrew "Andy" Soule and Max "Mickey" Soule.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Franklin County Rehab Center and the ICU nurses at Northwestern Medical Center for their kind and considerate care while Susie was a patient, and a special thanks to Dr. Frank Zsoldos and Judy for their care and special attention. Also, to a special friend, Lynda Ryan, for all her assistance during Susie's illness.
In accordance with Susie's wishes, funeral services and interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorials to the Sheldon Public Library, 1640 Main St., Sheldon, Vt. 05483, or to a charity of one's choice.

The Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St. is assisting the family with arrangements.

ELIZABETH SCOTT SALISBURY DENNY
Elizabeth S. Denny died Aug. 29, 2006, at the Culpeper Baptist Retirement Community, where she has resided since 2000.

Mrs. Denny was born in Washington, D.C. on June 20, 1912, to Ernest and Marguerite Salisbury. She graduated from the Washington College of Law in 1932. She spent her working life in service to the government. Her first job was under the Federal Civil Service, in 1930, as a mimeograph operator with the George Washington Bicentennial Commission. Her final position was as Administrative Assistant to General Lewis B. Hershey, who was Advisor to the President of the United States on Manpower Mobilization. She retired from the Veterans Administration in 1973 and from the Naval Reserve also in 1973, having entered active duty in 1944. She attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

Mrs. Denny, ably assisted by her husband John, spent her retirement years tracing her 'roots' with great success. They enjoyed traveling the country researching their relatives. Thanks to their efforts we now have extensive genealogy records of the Scott, Salisbury, Denny and Wilson ancestors.

Mrs. Denny was predeceased by her husband, John Carl Denny, of Columbia, S.C.; her sister, Virginia Hudak of St. Albans, Vt.; and her brother, Ernest Salisbury of Winchester, Va. She will be missed by her siblings, Richard Salisbury of Swanton, Vt., Donald Salisbury of Bethesda, Md., Mary Cannon of Coupeville, Wash. and Marjorie Rogers (and husband Harry) of Culpeper, Va. She also leaves many nieces and nephews, including Richard Hudak, Alex Hudak, Nancy Hudak, Jane Giroux of St. Albans, David Hudak of Montana, and Mary Beth Lussier of Enosburg Falls; as well as many other relatives throughout the United States.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 1, 2006, in the Clore-English Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Andy Knighting will be conducting the service. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service.

Lt. Commander Denny, Ret. will be buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13, 2006.

HELEN (WARREN) MEUNIER
FAIRFAX - Helen Warren Meunier, a lifelong resident of Fairfax, died on Aug. 30, 2006, at Haven Health Care.

Helen was born on Feb. 8, 1916, the daughter of the late Wayne and Leona (Chates) Warren. Helen attended school in Fairfax. She worked in the housekeeping department at the Medical Center in Burlington.

Her survivors include her daughter, Pauline and her husband, Richard Coe of Sheldon; a son, Robert Meunier of St. Albans; a daughter-in-law, Ardis Meunier of Fairfax; a sister, Cynthia Learned of Jericho; sister-in-law, Mildred Warren of Fairfax; 15 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by an infant daughter, Beverly; a son, Edward Meunier; three brothers, Nelson, George and Wayne Warren; five sisters, Doris and Irene Warren, Alma Billado, Wilma Rooney, Myrle Lafountain; and two half sisters, Iris Laporte and May Lamelle.

There will be no public visiting hours or funeral services. Burial will be in the Sanderson Corners Cemetery in Fairfax at the convenience of the family.

HECTOR T. BROWN
ENOSBURG FALLS l Hector T. Brown, age 71, passed away Monday evening, Aug. 28, 2006, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

He was born July 20, 1935, in Enosburgh, Vt., the son of the late Alton and Alice (Lacross) Brown.

Hector served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1959. Following his honorable discharge he owned and operated a dairy farm in Fairfield until 1967, at which time he became the owner and operator of Brown's ABC Market in Fairfield and then in 1978 Brown's Hardware in Richford. Following his retirement from the stores he drove truck for McDermott's Trucking for several years. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Enosburg Falls and was a former member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Fairfield where he served on the pastoral board and also served as head usher for 26 years. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 42 of Enosburg Falls and the Knights of Columbus

He is survived by his wife, Denise (Brodeur) Hoadley - Brown of Enosburg Falls; his children, Kenneth Brown and his wife, Elizabeth of Richford, Roxane Bender and her husband, Mark of Severna Park, Md., Rick Brown of Fairfield, Melissa Norton and her husband, Tim of Essex; three grandchildren, Christopher Brown, Devin and Nikki Norton; a brother, Roger Brown of Ledyard, Conn.; Denise's children, Sarah Jewett and her husband, Fred, Lynn Raymond and her husband, Scott, Karen Allen and her husband, Joe, and Kelley Hoadley, all of Berkshire; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Yvonne (Gervais) Brown on Nov.17, 1995; and a sister, Shirley Bilodeau.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning, Sept. 1, 2006, at 11 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Enosburg Falls with Reverend Benedict Kiely celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in St. John the Baptist Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.
