VIVA M. MARTIN

GEORGIA-Viva M. Martin, 83, a resident of Georgia for 31 years, passed away Thursday evening, May 31, 2001, at Holiday House Nursing Facility following a lengthy illness. She was born in Alburg, Vermont June 14, 1917, the daughter of the late Floyd and Donna (Duba) Creller. Her husband, Harry A. Martin died July 29, 1969.

Mrs. Martin was an excellent cook and enjoyed preparing meals and being with her family.

Survivors include three sons and their wives; Ronald and Anne Martin of St. Albans Town, Vance and Cora Martin of North Hero, and Dale and Sis Martin of Georgia, two daughters; Norma and her husband, Tom Scullen of Portsmouth, Rhode Island and Carole Burns of Delray Beach, Florida. She also leaves two sisters; Juanita Stone of Rouses Point, NY and Genevieve Secore of Hershey, PA, seventeen grandchildren, many great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two sons, Harry Martin, Jr. in his infancy, and Kevin D. Martin on June 26, 1995, a sister and six brothers.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 A.M. in the Heald Funeral Chapel with Pastor Steve Clark officiating. Interment will be in the family lot in Alburg Center Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Vermont Chapter, P.O. Box 1139, Montpelier, VT 05601. Visitation will be on Monday from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans.

PATRICK R. GILBERT

RICHMOND KENTUCKY- Patrick R. Gilbert, 62, of Kidwell Lane, Waco, Kentucky, died Thursday evening, May 31, 2001, at his home.

He was born on Aug. 31, 1938, in Fairfield, Vermont; the son of the late Paul and Kathleen Mackin Gilbert. He was a member of the St. Mark's Roman Catholic Church in Richmond, Kentucky.

After an initial enlistment in the United States Marine Corps, he transferred to the United States Air Force, earning the rank of Maser Sergeant. Sgt. Gilbert served his country during the Vietnam Conflict, and was also stationed in Panama, Korea, Germany and Southeast Asia. He was transferred to the Blue Grass Army Depot--Richmond, Ky. Activity in 1969, being assigned to Detachment 8, 1CEVOG, retiring in 1985.

Sgt. Gilbert's commendations include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star, and the Good Conduct Medal with Silver Oak Leaf Cluster.

Mr. Gilbert is survived by his wife, Felicia DeGracia Gilbert, of Richmond, Ky.; one son, Major Ronald (Kimberly) Gilbert, USAF, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; one daughter, Kathleen Gilbert (James Howard) Johnson, of Waco, Ky; three brothers, Daniel (Pearl) Gilbert, of St. Albans, Vt., Michael (Thetis) Gilbert of Johnson, Vt., and Robert Gilbert, of Taiwan; one sister, Sharon (Kerwin) Flanders, of Vermont; four grandchildren, James Patrick Gilbert, Kristopher Gilbert, Brandon Paul Gilbert and Logan Ross Gilbert, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Margaret Gilbert.

Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, June 4, 2001, at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home 328 W. Main Street, Richmond, Ky, 40475, with Rev. Wayne Miller officiating.

Burial followed in the Madison County, Ky. Memorial Gardens, with full military honors being observed.

Friends called from 5 until 9 p.m. Sunday at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Christopher Gilbert, Paul Gilbert, Allen VanWinkle, Hugh Cross, Terry Trent and Tommy Shelton.

Honorary pallbearers were Herbert Kidwell, Bill Palahunich, Bill Hale and Dickie Peircefield.

MARGARET M. COMI

ST. ALBANS-Margaret M. Cabak Comi, 85, a resident of St. Albans since 1942, passed away Wednesday night, May 30, 2001 in St. Peters Hospital in Albany, NY following a four month illness. She was born in Lisbon Falls, Maine January 10, 1916, the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (Katula) Cabak. On August 23, 1941 she married Dario "Doc" Comi in Northfield, Vermont. Doc was a retired teacher and coach at Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans. He died April 5, 1990.

In addition to being a homemaker, Margaret was employed for many years as bookkeeper for Hatch Hardware Store in St. Albans. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, the Autonoe Club, the Duplicate Bridge Club, Midway Home Demonstration Group and Franklin County Senior Citizens. She enjoyed sporting events and playing bridge.

Margaret is survived by her son and his wife, Richard and Sarah Comi of Glenmont, NY, her daughter and her husband, Joanne and William B. Dochterman of Swisher, Iowa, a sister, Agnes Flood of Montpelier, VT, three brothers and their wives; Howard and Stella Brown of Pasadena MD, Frank and Rhea Brown of Northboro, MA, and Jim and Sandy Brown of Dellwood, Wisconsin. She also leaves seven grandchildren, Anne Marie and her husband, Nick Morog, David Comi, Jennifer and her husband, Jim Strohecker, Joseph Comi, Nicole Comi, Daniel McCloskey and his wife, Michelle Nolan, and Margaret McCloskey. Also surviving are eight great grandchildren and nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10:00 a.m. in St. Mary's Church in St. Albans. A luncheon will follow in the Parish Center. Interment will be in the Comi family lot in Calvary Cemetery in Northfield, VT at 3:00 p.m. on Monday. Friends planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the "Dario J. Doc' Comi Scholarship Fund" c/o Shirley Raymond, Bellows Free Academy, 71 So. Main St., St. Albans, VT 05478. Visitation will be on Sunday from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans.

RICHARD A. SILK

ST. ALBANS- Mr. Richard A. Silk, age 72, died early Friday morning, June 1, 2001, in the Northwestern Medical Center. Dick was born in St. Albans March 16, 1929 son of the late Richard R. and Grace (Zweeres) Silk. Most of his working life he spent with H.P. Hood Milk Company as an op[operator and long distance milk hauler. He joined the Vermont National Guard in 1947 and was activated into the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Richard was a communicant of Holy Angels Church and a member of both the American Legion Post#1, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #758 in St. Albans.

Richard married Jeannette Garceau on June 10, 1953. Besides his wife of 47 years he is survived by their daughters Debra and her husband Thomas Dooley and Gail and her husband Steven McGrath all of Essex Jct., six grandchildren Christopher, Pamela and Bryan Dooley, Jason, Jeff and Heather McGrath, eight sisters and brothers and their spouses Betty and Robert Ives of Swanton, Eunice and Frank Patnaude of St. Albans, Yuanita Benoure of St. Albans, Gertrude Clark of Swanton, Grace Mack of St. Albans, Alida Reynolds of Burlington, Walter Silk of St. Albans, Merton and Sally Silk of Woodbury, several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother Rawlett Silk.

A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10:00 a.m. in Holy Angels Church. Friends may call on the family from 7 to 9 Sunday evening, at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St. Memorials in Dick's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 13 Loomis St., Montpelier, Vt. 05602. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

DORA HENRY COUGHLIN

ALBURG SPRINGS/SEATTLE- Dora Henry Coughlin, born June 4, 1933 in Alburg Springs, Vermont on her family farm, died at home in Woodinville, Washington on Monday, April 9, 2001 after losing a long battle with cancer.

Dora Henry attended Alburg Springs School in a one-room schoolhouse, and graduated from Hartford High School in Connecticut. She attended Syracuse University, worked in resort management, and after a skiing accident at Stowe, left to work at a bank in Burlington where she met her future husband.

Dora married John Coughlin in Alburg Springs on November 29, 1960, and later moved to New York State. She and John had four children. She worked as a nutritional counselor for the migrant workers. Later she opened her chain of small specialty shops called "Gemini."

The Coughlins moved to Woodinville, Washington in 1978. Dora managed a retail store in Seattle, and in 1982 opened a Ski and Sport Shop and a second store later in the Woodinville area.

Dora loved to cook, sent meat loaves to the missions for the homeless, and was famous for her Christmas pork pies. She loved to travel with her daughters and frequently went to Cape Cod, Europe, Mexico, and Nova Scotia. Her pride and joy was a 30 year-old airstream that she parked at Point-No-Point in Puget Sound.

Dora became a certified yoga instructor, and was interested in Eastern philosophy. She was a member of St. Jude's Parish, in Woodinville.

She is survived by her husband, John; daughters Jennifer Coughlin, Louise Faulds and her husband, Paul; Julie Marie Manion and her husband, Timothy; son Mathew Michael Coughlin; grandchildren Conor and Meagan Manion, and eleven brothers and sisters.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Anne's Shrine in Isle Lamotte on Monday, June 4 at 11:15 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the John Raleigh III Scholarship Fund; c/o Dena St. Amour, 22 Country Club Estates, Swanton, VT 05488. Burial will follow at the Greenwood Family Cemetery, on Henry Road in Alburg Springs.

CLAIR E. BOLT

SWANTON -- Clair E. Bolt, age 86, died Monday morning, July 30, 2001, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

He was born July 5, 1915 in Richford, the son of the late Mitchell & Ora (Fletcher) Bolt. Clair was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII, following the service he took the Silver Meter Train to Arizona, he then worked on area farms with his father. Starting in the late 1940's he worked at Atlas Plywood Co. in Richford, Jay Peak Ski Resort when it was first opened, Arthur St. Onge Sr. cutting logs and then painted houses. Clair was an avid outdoorsman and loved deer hunting, but most of all loved life. He was one of Montgomery's last Outlaws.

He is survived by his son and his wife Bruce & Theresa Bolt of Richford; a daughter and her husband Charlene & Frank Wagner of East Fairfield; his friend, Florence Hakey of Swanton; a sister and her husband, Charlotte & David Deuso of Montgomery; five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, one great-great grandson, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Max Bolt and a sister, Jessie (Dunham) Oleson.

In keeping with Clair's wishes, he will be cremated and a memorial service will be held Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. at the Spears Funeral Home on 96 Dickinson Ave. in Enosburg Falls with Pastor Patrick Hoadley officiating. There will be no visiting hours.

PERRY DEAN "TIM" DODDS

NORTH HERO ­ Perry Dean "Tim" Dodds, passed away at home on Saturday, July 28, 2001, following a long illness.

He was born on March 23, 1932 in Burlington, the son of Perry and Daisy (Giguere) Dodds. He attended North Hero Elementary School and Alburg High School. In 1957 he married Mary Jane Jackson of Milton.

Tim was a true Vermonter in every way. He was a man of few words, but you listened and learned from each and every one. He was an extremely hard working man who had expertise in construction, landscaping and had most recently worked at Wilcox Cove Golf Course in Grand Isle. He was a wonderful, caring, providing father and grandfather and will be greatly missed.

Time is survived by three daughters and their families, Lora and Steve Benoit, their son Dustin and daughter Amanda of Galt, Calif., Tamora and Gary Pidgeon, Sr. and their son Gary Jr. of Fletcher, Audrey and Mark Fitzsimmons and their sons Jackson and Ryan of Dayton, Nev. He is also survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Wilbur Bready of New Port Richey, Fla., and a brother-in-law, Henry Hutchins of No. Hero and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his father Perry Dean in 1940, his mother Daisy in 1998, and his sister, Jean Hutchins in 1999.

Visiting hours are private. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 2 at 11 a.m. on the Fill of the old No. Hero/So. Alburg Bridge, weather permitting. Alternate location is the United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the family lot. Arrangements are by Kidder Memorial Home, Swanton, Vt.

MARY L. RICE

HIGHGATE CENTER ­ Mrs. Mary L. rice, age 89, died Sunday evening, July 29, 2001, shortly after arrival t the Northwestern Medical Center. She had resided at Verdelle Village, E.C.F. She was born in Sheldon May 20, 1912, daughter of the late Frank and Alice (Rounds) McEnany. Mary attended Sheldon Schools and later was married to Clair Rice, who died Oct. 17, 1957. Mary was employed in the dietary department of the St. Albans Hospital for several years. She was a former communicant of St. Louis Church.

Her survivors include her son, Reginald and his wife Jeannette Rice of Franklin, daughters, Christine and her husband Donald Ward of Sheldon, Ione Bushey of Highgate Center, sons-in-law, James Lavoie of St. Albans and Thomas Sartwell, Sr. of Richford; ten grandchildren, Michael Sartwell, Chrystal Boutin, Timothy Sartwell, Brian Ward, David Rice, Tina Kilbury, Paul Kilbury, Bruce Kilbury, Jeanne Cullen and Brenda Wanamaker; 21 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband Clair, she was predeceased by her daughters, Patricia Sartwell and Cora Lavoie; four grandchildren, Thomas Sartwell, Jr., Peter Sartwell, Bruce Ward and Bradley Bushey.

Funeral services and family visiting will be private. Interment will be in the Rice family lot in Highgate Center Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy may contribute, in her memory, in masses or to the charity of your own choice. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

MITCHELL EZRA HAKEY

SWANTON ­ Mitchell Ezra Hakey, 54, a lifelong resident of this community died Thursday evening, July 26, 2001, in the Holiday House Nursing Facility in St. Albans Town.

Mitch was born in Swanton June 15, 1947, the son of Ezra Raymond Hakey and Dixie Downey. He attended schools in Swanton and was married to the former Susan Manning who survives him.

Beginning at the age of sixteen and continuing until his illness, Mitch worked as a trucker and most recently was associated with Quinn Brothers. He was a lifelong member of the Memorial United Methodist Church and will always be remembered for the devotion he had for his family and for his love of hunting and fishing.

In addition to his wife Susan Hakey, Mitch leaves his mother and step-father, Dixie and Donald Root of West Swanton; two daughters, Stacey Choiniere and her husband Jeff of Franklin, and Jessica Hakey-Gingras of Swanton; a step-daughter, Kristin Parah of St. Albans; two sons, Mitchell Todd Hakey and Ezra Matthew Hakey-Gingras, both of Swanotn; a sister, Sherry Holbrook and her husband David of Swanton; two brothers, Raymond Hakey and his wife Ann and Terrance Hakey and his wife Shirley, all of Highgate; four grandchildren, Tara and Trevor Gagner and Alex Choiniere of Franklin and Elizabeth Hakey of Swanton. Also surviving are his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Sandy and Bob Manning of Swanton; brothers-in-law, James and David Manning of Swanton and a sister-in-law, Laura Sanchez and her husband Jeff of Colorado, as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Gina Hakey Pilbin on Oct. 5, 1992 and his father Ezra Hakey on Feb. 14, 1994.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 13, 2001, at 11 a.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton. The Reverend Donavee Copenhaver, pastor of the Missisquoi River Charge will officiate. Interment will follow in the Hakey family lot in Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home on Monday, July 30, 2001, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Gifts in Mitch's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, Vermont Division, 150 Kennedy Drive, So. Burlington, VT 05403.
