EUGENE M. GRATTON

ST. ALBANS -- Eugene M. Gratton, age 43, died unexpectedly Wednesday morning, Aug. 8, 2001, at the Northwestern Medical Center. Eugene was born in St. Albans Nov. 4, 1957, son of Patricia (Benoit) Gratton and the late Maurice "Baldy" Gratton. Upon graduation from Bellows Free Academy, Eugene joined the U.S. Marine Corps. After his military tour he was employed at the Franklin County Sheriff Department, and the St. Albans City Police Department prior to being employed at the St. Albans City Water and Waste Water Department. For the past ten years he was employed at Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Manufacturers in St. Albans.

Eugene was an avid gardener, horseman, cook, hunter and fisherman, who enjoyed the outdoor sports immensely. Eugene was especially fond of his horses Jules and Holly and his dog Buster. He was a member of the Franklin County Sportsman Club, the National Audubon Society, Ducks Unlimited and National Rifle Association.

July 15, 2000, he married Allison Murray. Besides his wife of St. Albans, Eugene is survived by his mother Patricia Gratton of St. Albans, five stepchildren, Ryan and his wife Marci Simpson of East Montpelier, Jacob Simpson and his fiancee Tina Buzzi of Danville, Kristal and her husband Daniel Renaudette of Sutton, Erin Simpson and Zachary Bean, all of St. Albans; his sister Lisa and her husband Joseph Larose; brother William "Billy" and his wife Jennifer Gratton, all of St. Albans; three nephews, Andrew Gratton, Christopher Gratton, John Larose, a niece Lisbeth Larose, several aunts, uncles, cousins and special friends. He was predeceased by his father Maurice "Baldy" Gratton June 10, 1982.

A celebration of his life will take place Saturday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the family lot at Fairfield Pond. Directions to the lot are the second left after entering the pond road. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St. from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Interment will be private. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the AmCare Ambulance Service, PO Box 207, St. Albans, VT 05478. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

MARY JANE GILLILAN McGOVERN

FLETCHER -- Mary Jane Gillilan McGovern of Fletcher passed away Aug. 6, 2001, after fighting a courageous battle with Leukemia.

She was born in Jeffersonville on Sept. 3, 1950, the daughter of John Patrick and Phyllis Mae (Bell) McGovern. She married Randy Fletcher on July 5, 2001. Mary was a certified massage therapist in private practice. She was also employed by P.G. Adams, had worked for Jeri Hall Hardware in Jericho as store manager, in public relations for North West Solid Waste Management District, on faculty of the Community College of Vermont, and as a correspondent photographer for the St. Albans Messenger. She volunteered as an advocate for children in the role of Guardian Ad Litem with the Family Court.

In 2000, she attended The Boulder College of Massage Therapy in Boulder, Colo. In 1988 she graduated on the dean's list with a B.A. in American Studies from the prestigious Smith College, and was the Ada Comstock Scholars class president at Smith, 1987-88. She received an Associates degree from the Community College of Vermont in 1984. Mary was an avid sportswoman and loved biking, marathon running, skiing, horseback riding and hiking. She was a member of the Green Mountain Athletic Association and the Green Mountain Bike Club. While living in Colorado, she became enamored with the beauty of the West; exploring the area hiking; spending time in the open air with friends. Her fondness for the outdoors was exceeded only by her love for family and friends. Mary's gift to us was her warmth, humor and giving spirit. Many will remember the strength of her spirit, radiating light and love in her beautiful blue eyes.

Besides her husband Randy, she leaves three sons and their spouses, Patrick Gillilan of Fletcher, Kenneth and Ann Marie Gillilan of Jeffersonville, and Jonathan and Amy Gillilan of Fletcher, stepdaughters Kristi Fletcher of St. Albans and Codie Fletcher of Fletcher. Her grandchildren, Amanda, Miranda, Macaleh, Priscilla, Keegan and Kayden; stepfather Robert McGregor of North Hero; four brothers and their spouses, John and Nancy McGovern of So. Burlington, Kevin and Audrey McGovern of Jericho, Thomas McGovern of Jeffersonville and Robert McGregor of North Hero; her lifelong friend Bonnie (Edwards) Adams; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A celebration of Mary's life will be held on Saturday, Aug. 11 from 1 to 4 at Mary and Randy's house on Howrigan Road in Fletcher. For directions call 849-6410 or 644-5777. EVELYN LOUELLA (MARTIN) BABIN JOHNSON

COWANSVILLE, QUEBEC -- Born in Alburg, Vt. on Oct. 13, 1930, died Aug. 1, 2001 at Brome Memorial Perkin Hospital in Cowansville, Que. She resided in Bedford, Que. since 1964. Daughter of the late Louella (Bohannon) and George Martin.

She was married to Glendon Babin, now of Highgate Center, on Oct. 25, 1950. She later married Robert Johnson who survives her. She leaves one son, Bruce Crandall, Jr. of Bedford, Que.; one precious granddaughter, Kayla Crandall, also of Bedford; four sisters, Marilyn & Michel Guinard of Highgate Center, Marie Flood of Forest Dale, Vt., Dina & Gerald Parah of St. Albans, and Alfreda Gagnon of Swanton; four brothers, Alfred Martin of Highgate Falls, Edwin & Janice Martin of Highgate Center, Charles & Laurie of Highgate Falls, and Donald & Judy of Florida; one very dear friend and sister-in-law, Betty McTear of Bedford, Que.; many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one brother and three sisters.

There will be no calling hours.

Gravesite services only at Stanbridge East Ridge Road Cemetery in Stanbridge East, Que. on Aug. 8 at 11 a.m. Burial will follow.

GLADYS TOWER STREETER, R.N.

GEORGIA/ST. ALBANS -- Mrs. Gladys Tower Streeter, R.N., 86, died Sunday August 5, 2001, at Redstone Villa following an extended illness. She was born in East Weymouth, Mass. on Nov. 16, 1914, the daughter of the late Douglas E. Tower, Sr., and Annette Bettencourt Tower. On January 17, 1937, she married Nathan E. Streeter who predeceased her on July 6, 1986. She also was predeceased by a son Robert E. Streeter on June 22, 2000.

In 1937, she graduated from the New England Hospital for Women and Children in Boston, Mass. and was a staff registered nurse at the Milford Hospital in Milford, Mass. from 1937 to 1950. She was then a staff nurse at Kerbs Memorial Hospital in St. Albans for 14 years working in the maternity ward, pediatric ward and new born nursery. She was a former member of Banner Grange #356 for over 25 years and was an active member of the Georgia Plain Baptist Church since 1950.

She leaves two grandchildren, Timothy R. and his wife Shellie Streeter of Fletcher, Heather E. Streeter and her husband Lonnie Burke of West Swanton; a daughter-in-law, Carol D. Streeter of St. Albans; three great-grandsons, Brandon, Ryan and Keegan Streeter of Fletcher; five brothers, Douglas E. Tower, Jr. and his wife Rena of El Paso, Texas, George B. Tower, Sr., and his wife Annie of Green Cove Springs, Fla., Myron D. Tower and his wife Marie of Milford, Mass., Edward A. Tower of Woonsocket, R.I., and Wallace M. Tower, Sr. of Milford, Mass.; two sisters, Laura Blake, and Dorothy Marchand and her husband Alexander both of Summerfield, FL; several brothers-in law, sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews. Also, her very dear friends, Louise Whitney of St. Albans, Carolyn Branagan of Georgia, and Sarah Nye Vester of Georgia. She was predeceased by a brother, John H. Tower, and a sister, Mildred Cenedella.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Redstone Villa for their kind and considerate care of Gladys over the past two and one-half years.

A service of remembrance and celebration of Gladys' life will be held on Thursday, August 9, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the Georgia Plain Baptist Church. The Reverend Steven Clark will officiate. Interment will follow in the family lot at Georgia Plain Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours at the funeral home. Friends planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorial contributions to the Georgia Plain Baptist Church, c/o Alexis Bell, 2573 Plains Road, Milton, VT 05468. Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans.

BLANCHE LAMPHERE

SWANTON -- Mrs. Blanche Lamphere, 71, a lifetime resident of Broadway Street in Swanton Village, died early Sunday evening, Aug. 5, 2001, in Redstone Villa in St. Albans.

Blanche was born in Richford Oct. 28, 1929, the daughter of the late Fred and Lena (Longlin) Tatro. She graduated from Swanton High School and in 1949 was married to Wesley "Joe" Lamphere who predeceased her Dec. 10, 1990.

For over 25 years Blanche was associated with the Union Carbide Corporation. She was a lifelong parishioner of The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary where she belonged to the Altar Society. She was also a member of the Champlain Country Club and, along with her son and grandson, was a carrier for The Burlington Free Press for several years. Blanche will be remembered for her love of the Las Vegas and Atlantic City casinos.

Blanche leaves her son, Robert Lamphere and his wife Honor and her very special grandson who was her pride and joy, Michael Lamphere, all of Swanton. Also surviving are two brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law, Darrell and Loraine Lamphere of Salem, N.H., and Bernard Duprat of Swanton. She also leaves special friends, Eleanor and Paul Gaboury of Swanton and Conway and Lorraine Hutchins of St. Albans, as well as several close nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sisters, Rita Chase, Sybil Duprat, and Lena Tatro, and her brothers, Jack Tatro, Carl Tatro and Fred Tatro, Jr.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at 10 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada Street, Swanton. Father Paul C. Houde, temporary administrator will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in the Lamphere family lot in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton on Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Gifts in Blanche's memory may be made to Missisquoi Valley Rescue, PO Box 22, Swanton, VT 05488.

EVELYN J. KING

ST. ALBANS ­ Evelyn Jessie (Armstrong) (Nagle) King, age 88, died Friday evening, Aug. 3, 2001, in Verdelle Village, E.C.F. following an extended illness. She was born in Vars, Ontario, Canada Dec. 30, 1912, daughter of the late Aaron and Jessie (McGillis) Armstrong. She was married to Carl King who predeceased her in 1988. Her survivors include several step grandchildren, including Martin Wait of St. Albans, and many cousins. She was predeceased by her stepdaughter and primary care giver, Diann Cross on July 3, 2001.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Brady & Levesque Chapel. Pastor Walter Mahany of the Church of the Nazarene, will officiate. There will be no public calling hours. Interment will follow the service in the King family lot in Sanderson Corner Cemetery, in Fairfax. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider helping handicap children through the Make A Wish Foundation, 1340 Williston Road, So. Burlington, VT 05403. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

JEANETTE DOMINGUE BENOIT

STE. BRIGIDE/FARNHAM, Quebec-Jeanette Dominique Benoit, age 75, died early Saturday morning, July 7, 2001 at Les Foyers Farnham surrounded by her family.

Jeanette was born in Frelighburg, Quebec, on October 16, 1925, daughter of Adelard & Josephine (Bessette) Domingue. She married Paulin Benoit on June 14, 1947. Jeanette was a resident of Ste. Brigide for 25 years and was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Paulin, and her five children, Michel (Gisele Prud'Homme), Genevieve, Pierrette, Therese, Bernard (Antoinette Pluk); 11 grandchildren Marilyne, Brigitte, Sebastien, Antonie, Anne-Marie-Eve, Benoit, Melissa, Vicky, Hugo, Joey, Louizelle; three great-grandchildren, Tanya, Gerry, Olivier; a sister, Doris Smith of St. Albans, Vt.; two sisters-in-law, Mary Domingue of Abercorn, Que., and Fleur Ange Domingue of Sutton, Que.

She was predeceased by her father on Jan. 21, 1971; her mother on April 16, 1979; two brothers, Roger Domingue on October 19, 1969, and Richard Domingue on Oct. 31, 1969; a grandson Jean-Nicholas, on Jan, 17, 1981.

At her request, Jeanette was cremated. Visiting hours were at F. & J.M. Desourdy Inc. Funeral Home in Farnham, on July 14, 2001. A mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Ste. Brigide Church, in Ste. Brigide Que. Interment followed in St. Simon's cemetery in Abercorn, Que.

Memorial contributions may be made to Les Foyers Farnham's Foundation, in Farnham Que., or Centre d'Accueil de Cowansville in Cowansville, Que.

ALISON M. LAMPHIER

ST. ALBANS -- Miss Alison Marie Lamphier, age 3, died Tuesday evening, July 31, 2001, in the Fletcher Allen Health Care Center, with her loving parents at her side, following an illness of six months. Alison was born in St. Albans April 4, 1998, daughter of Steven and Darlene (Choiniere) Lamphier. She was baptized and was a member of Holy Angels Church. Alsion was a very bright and beautiful girl. She loved to play with her dolls, play pretend and ride her tricycle. She had an extraordinary love for her family. She brought joy to everyone around her and lived life to its fullest. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her parents, Steven and Darlene, her brother Samuel, all of St. Albans, her maternal grandparents, Eleanor and John Bean, Donald and Jean Choiniere, all of St. Albans, her paternal grandparents, Harley and Eleanor Lamphier of Greenwood, N.Y., maternal great-grandmother Esther Fregeau of St. Albans, paternal great-grandfather William Atherton of Greenwood, N.Y., aunts and uncles, Debbie and Ed Gallo, Pamela Fiaschetti, Gary and Judy Choiniere, Karen and Tom Whitcomb, Anne Marie and Edward Lowe, Joanne Choiniere, Melinda Lamphier and many cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St. from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Interment will be in the Lamphier family lot in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the St. Albans Free Library, Maiden Lane, St. Albans, VT 05478, or the Make A Wish Fondation, 1340 Williston Road, So. Burlington, VT 05403.

CLOSSON KENT BLAISDELL

CAMBRIDGE -- Closson Kent Blaisdell, age 88, of Cambridge passed away Tuesday morning, July 31, 2001, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington after a brief illness. He was born in Wilmington, Mass. Sept. 30, 1912, son of the late Charles Varnum and Arabelle (Closson) Blaisdell. He graduated Wilmington High School Class of 1929 and married the former Harriet Louise Staveley in April of 1932. She predeceased him in 1973. He married Edna (Olson) Hague on April 27, 1974 in The Cambridge United Church, Cambridge, Vt.

Closson contributed to his community as Town Moderator at Cambridge town meetings for several years, as well as Moderator for the Village of Cambridge for many years. He was a trustee and a member of the Board of Directors for Cambridge Regional Health Center and was extremely proud of his position as their Property Manager. He was an avid sports fan enjoying monitoring all of the national leagues from season to season. Most of all he loved Ballroom Dancing with his wife and as a long time member of the South Burlington Dance Club he always looked forward to every available opportunity to dance. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend and will be deeply missed by all of those who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his wife Edna Blaisdell of Cambridge; three sons, Closson Kent Blaisdell, Jr. and his wife Martha of Castleton, N.Y., Bradford Thomas Blaisdell and his wife Joyce of North Cambridge, and Charles Mark Blaisdell and his wife Judith of Cambridge; two daughters, Beverley Ann Learned and her husband John of Cambridge, Sally Ellen Loura and her husband Alan of Stowe; a brother, Elliot Blaisdell and his wife Eleanor of Massachusetts; three sisters, Sally Blaisdell of Massachusetts, Jesse Herculsen of Massachusetts, and Barbara Boisvert of New Hampshire; three step-children, Sandra Louise Manseau of East Fairfield, G. Kenneth Hague of East Fairfield, Robert Earl Hague of Lowell, Mass., 18 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, ten step grandchildren, 11 step-great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

He was also predeceased by a daughter, Wilma Harriet Nye in 1995, a brother Augustus Blaisdell, a sister, Phyllis Woodside, and a granddaughter.

There will be no visiting hours.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, at 10 a.m. in The Cambridge United Church with Reverend Craig Bensen officiating. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family in the family lot in Mountain View Cemetery, Cambridge. Memorial contributions may be made in Closson's memory to the Cambridge Regional Health Center, c/o Joe Rogers, PO Box 58, Cambridge, VT 05444, or Cambridge Rescue Squad, PO Box 431 Jeffersonville, VT 05464. Arrangements are by the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home, 1176 Main Street, Fairfax.
