Gladys Hartell
1903 - 2002
NORTH HAVERHILL — Gladys May Hartell, 99, of North Haverhill, and a former 72 year resident of Nyack, NY, died Nov. 28, 2002 at her son's residence in North Haverhill, where she had been residing for the last four years.
She was born Feb. 7, 1903 in Vershire, the daughter of Clinton Melendy and Effie Bell Perkins.
He father owned and operated a feed store in West Fairlee, and he later became a mail carrier in Randolph.
Gladys worked for the Nyack Y.M.C.A. in food service.
She was predeceased by her husband, George W. Hartell, in April, 1969; one son, Robert Hartell, in June, 1998; two brothers, James and Stanley Melendy; and two sisters, Daisy Small and Fonnie Melendy Young.
Surviving relatives include a sons, Stanley C. and wife Donna Hartell of North Haverhill; one daughter, Gladys Hencke of West Haverstraw, NY; eight grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held in Oak Hill cemetery, Nyack, NY, at the convenience of the family.

George Quig
1920 - 2003
SPRING HILL, FL — George Ernest Quig, 82, died Jan. 21, 2003 in Spring Hill, FL.
He was born Sept. 12, 1920 in Scranton, PA, the son of Marie Englehardt and Ernest Quig.
He spent his early years in New Jersey and was a graduate of Maplewood High School in East Orange, NJ.
He proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1940 to 1946. He was a bombsight maintenance technician, one of the first servicemen stationed at Grenier Field in Manchester, NH. As a Chief Warrant Officer assigned to the Inspector General's office in Rome, NY, he inspected air bases throughout New England and New York.
He married Kathlyn Flora Whitcomb on June 10, 1943. Coming to New Hampshire in 1946, he was self-employed as an insurance agent, proprietor of Swimming Hole Cabins and general store in Swiftwater and was a distributor of Cornwall Tools. For many years, he installed lightning rods throughout northern New Hampshire. In 1964, he became a partner and later the owner of Franconia Insurance and Real estate Agency. After his retirement in 1979, he spent winters in Aripeka and Spring Hill, FL.
He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Littleton. He was a member and officer of Ammonoosuc Grange and White Mountain Grange for more than 50 years. He was a member of the national Grange and served as a deputy on the New Hampshire State Grange. For many years, he was a member of the Rotary Club in Littleton. He served as vice president of the new Hampshire Snowmobile Association in its early years, and president of Stump Jumpers Snowmobile Club. He enjoyed CB radios and was cited in the Congressional Record for his part in relaying the Mayday message that saved the crew of a South American fishing vessel. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling in his RV around the United States and Canada to such places as Prince Edward Island, Florida, New Mexico and the Pacific northwest.
He is remembered for his volunteer activities in Alcoholics Anonymous and prostate cancer support groups, as a volunteer fireman and civil defense director in Bath, and as a member of the planning board in Littleton.
Family members include his loving wife, Kathlyn; a son, Jeffrey of Seattle; a daughter, Jennifer Russell and husband Albert of Milton, VT; and grandchildren, Daniel and Kathlyn Russell.
A memorial service may be held in New Hampshire in the spring.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Gail Singer Memorial Building, 360 Route 101, Unit #8, Bedford, NH 03110-5032. Please specify that the gift is for prostate cancer research and education.

Richard E. Hodge
1929 - 2003
BRADFORD — Richard E. Hodge, 73, of Bradford, died on March 18,2003 at Cottage Hospital, Woodsville.
He was born Sept. 6, 1929 in West Fairlee, the son of James and Lilla (Tucker) Hodge.
He was educated in West Fairlee schools. In 1947 he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served honorably until his discharge in 1959.
For more than 10 years he was employed at Perry's Oil in Bradford. For 34 years he worked at the Bradford Veneer and Panel Company.
He enjoyed watching and feeding the birds in the backyard of his home and telling jokes to his family and friends. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy (Hall) Hodge of Bradford, whom he married in New Mexico; one son, Ronald of Bradford; two daughters, Connie Hodge of Bradford and Monica Chicoine of Bradford; four grandchildren; five brothers, Guy of Newbury, Kenneth of Fairlee, Gordon of West Fairlee, Maurice of Wilder, and Paul of Bradford; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Randall Hodge, in 1978.
Graveside funeral services will be May 3 at 1 p.m. in Sawyer cemetery, Bradford.
Donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Arrangements are by Hale Funeral Home of Bradford.

Wilfred Weeks
1938 - 2003
BRADFORD — Wilfred Warren Weeks, 64, a longtime Bradford resident, died March 17, 2003 at Brookside Nursing Home, Bradford.
He was born May 20, 1938, the son of Wilfred and Jean (Fortier) Weeks.
He attended Barre City schools.
He married the former Joan Spooner Brooks. They later divorced.
Mr. Weeks worked at the Comolli and Savoia Chicken Plant in South Barre and in the laundry of Barre City Hospital and later Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin.
He had been affiliated with North Barre Chapel and the Hedding United Methodist Church in Barre and had been a volunteer at the Bradford Food Shelf.
He enjoyed camping, puzzles, deer hunting, bingo, playing cards, and social life at the nursing home.
Survivors include his mother, Jean Massey of Barre; two brothers, Richard Weeks of East Montpelier and Raymond Weeks of Montpelier; a sister, Carol Ann Christie of Moretown; two half-brothers, Frederick E. Massey Jr. of Barre and John Massey of Waterbury; and a half-sister Gerry Marinelli of Seminole, FL.
He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Weeks and his stepfather, Frederick Massey Sr.
A graveside service will be held at the will be held at the convenience of the of the family at the Hope cemetery in Barre.

Robert L. Day Jr.
1950 - 2003
BEVERLY, MA — Robert L. Day Jr., 53, of Beverly, MA, died March 17, 2003 at Salem Hospital. He was the husband of Marion (Pierce) Day, with whom he shared 19 years of marriage, and grandson of Viola LaBranche of Whitman, MA.
He was born in Brockton, MA, the son of Shirley (Wry) Day of Bridgewater, and the late Robert L. Day.
He was raise in Stoughton and Haverhill, where he graduated from Haverhill Academy in 1967.
He continued his education and graduated from Bryant and Straton School of Business in the class of 1969. Following his education, he entered the National Guard during the Vietnam War. He had achieved the rank of Sergeant.
Mr. Day had been employed with Barron's TV in Lawrence, MA, where he was the Chief Financial Officer of the company for several years. He was also employed with Chadwick Services as a marketing representative for a number of years. Following his employment with Chadwick, he owned a Service Master Franchise and retired from Beverly Hospital 10 years ago due to his illness.
He was a former president of the Adjusters Association in the early 1980's.
Surviving him are his wife, Marion Day of Beverly, MA; his mother, Shirley Day of Bridgewater; his grandmother, Viola LaBranche of Whitman; four children, Robert L. Day III of Columbia, SC, Stephen P. Day, Sherrill Ambrose and her husband Davis and Muggsy O. Day, all of Beverly; three brothers, Richard Day of Uxbridge, Larry Day of Brockton and Michael Day of Lakeville, MA; two sisters, Carol Miller of Norfolk and Susan Colby of Bridgewater; two grandchildren, David and Alexandra Ambrose of Beverly; his father and mother-in-law, Clarence and Esther Pierce; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held March 21 in Beverly.

Romola Morse
BATH — Romola Chowhdry Morse, 82, died March 8, 2003.
She was born in Fatehgarh, India (near Luknow) to Edward and Martha Thomas Chowhdry.
Romola began in childhood to travel adventures that would take her to the far corners of the world. Her early years were spent moving throughout northern India with her parents as her father was a riding circuit judge for much of modern day Uttar Pradesh.
Romola left India at the age of 17 to study at London University, King's College, where she received a BA in English, and then on to Hughes Hall, Cambridge University, for her Master in Education.
Upon her return to India in 1942, Romola began her teaching career. During World War II, Romola joined the Women's Auxiliary Corps leaving in 1945 with a rank of Major. As India struggled for independence, Romola became deeply committed to Mahatma Ghandi's principles of non-violent conflict resolution. These principles were to shape the rest of her adult life.
On June 23, 1949, Romola married Richard Morse, a son of Dartmouth Professor Stearns and Helen (Field) Morse, in Almora, U.P. India, and together they began a journey which would encompass more than 50 years and travels to five continents.
Romola and Richard had two children, Ashok Daniel, born in July, 1954, and Martha Sunita in August, 1959. Romola pursued many avenues in life — mother, professor and author, ceaseless activist for peace, and champion of economic opportunities for those less fortunate.
Residing in Lucknow, Mumbai, San Francisco, Boston, Honolulu, Seattle and the Himalayan foothills, Romola spent her life amidst some of nature's splendid scenery, and it became a profound source of her spiritual inspiration.
Romola was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; and her son, Daniel.
She is survived by her daughter, Sunita (Kelly); four grandchildren, Heather Morse, Sean, Tara and Erin Kelly; and many nieces, nephews and in-laws from the United States, Scotland and India.
A memorial service will be held July 19 at the Bath Congregational Church, Bath.
Remembrances may be made as a gift of time or treasure to your favorite charity.

Leonard Kaplow
1920 - 2003
BRADFORD — Leonard Samuel Kaplow, 83, of Bradford, died June 5, 2003 at the Veterans Affairs Hospital, White River Junction.
He was born Feb. 11, 1920 in New York City, the son of Max and Rose (Augenstieich) Kaplowitz.
He spent his boyhood in Perth Amboy, NJ, graduating from Perth Amboy High School in 1941.
In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and entered Officer's Candidate School of the Chemical Warfare Service. He received his Commission in 1943 and was assigned to convoy shipments of poison gas to Canada and England, where he often lived in the caboose of a freight train. In 1944, he was reassigned as a laboratory officer for the newly built hospital ship, USS Comfort, and was injured off the coast of Okinawa in an attack by a Japanese suicide plane. He was awarded a Purple Heart and was retired from the Army.
In 1950, he became laboratory supervisor at the Mary Fletcher Hospital in Burlington. He received a master's in science degree from the University of Vermont in 1955, and an MD four years later. He was elected to an honorary medical society, Alpha Omega Alpha, and an honorary scientific society, Sigma Xi.
After interning at the Bishop de Goesbriand Hospital in Burlington, he entered a residency in pathology at Georgetown University in Washington, DC and completed it at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, where he became an assistant professor of pathology. In 1962, he was a Pathology Fellow at the national Cancer Institute in Bethesda, MD.
From 1964 to 1987, he was a pathologist at the Veterans Administration Hospital in West Haven, CT, where he was chief of laboratory service, and in 1975, professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at Yale University. At Yale, he served on the Human Investigations Committee. His research included pioneering work in the fields of hematocytology and laboratory computerization and automation, in which fields he authored over 100 scientific article, book chapters, monologues and abstracts.
One of his papers published while he was still a student at the University of Vermont, College of Medicine, described a method for observing and quantifying enzymes in white blood cells, and was later named a Citation Classic by the Institute for Scientific Information. Together with Dr. John Goffnet, he reported the transient disappearance of white blood cells in patients undergoing dialysis, and with Dr. D. G. Hsuing, described a herpes-like virus in an experimental guinea pig leukemia. He organized college training programs for laboratory technicians, and for physician's assistants in pathology. He took part in editing and reviewing articles for six different medical journals, held positions in local, state, national and international medical organizations and was a member of the Royal Microscopic Society.
Since retiring to Bradford in 1988, he has been active in community affairs, especially the Bradford Community Club, and was health officer for the town for three years. He was an avid tennis player, devoted gardener and accomplished photographer, whose photos appeared in Vermont Life and on the covers of medical journals. He also enjoyed taking courses at the institute for lifelong learning at Dartmouth.
He leaves his wife, Sheila Kaplow of Bradford, whom he married July 10, 1955 in London, England; a daughter, Roberta of Corinth; a son, David Kaplow of New Haven, CT; two grandchildren; and a sister, Shirley Schwartz of Redbank, NJ.
Funeral services were held June 8 in Bradford. Burial was in Upper Plain cemetery, Bradford.

Keziah LaValley
1907 - 2003
BROOKSVILLE, FL — Keziah (Heartz) Welch LaValley, 96, of Brooksville, FL, a former South Ryegate resident, died May 31, 2003 at the Hospice Center of Brooksville Healthcare.
Born on May 21, 1907 in South Ryegate, she was a daughter of John and Lucy (Stevenson) Heartz.
She graduated from Wells River High School in 1925, and later received her teaching certificate from Bradford Normal School.
On June 15, 1929, she was married to Lester G. Welch, who died in 1957. They made their home in South Ryegate, where they raised their five children.
In 1958, she attended the summer session at Lyndon State College and earned her credentials to return to teaching. She then taught at Groton Elementary School for 15 years.
In 1973, she married Fred LaValley, and they made their home in Dunedin, FL, spending summers in Barre. He died in 1994.
A longtime member of the South Ryegate United Presbyterian Church, she was very active in all church activities. She was a former member of the South Ryegate Women's Club and the Vermont Teachers Association.
She started collecting teddy bears several years ago, and her collection grew to 800. Her wish was carried out that her teddy bears be given to charity for needy children.
Survivors include one daughter, Edna Wells and husband Bruce of Lancaster, NH and Winter Haven, FL; three sons, John Welch of Brooksville, FL, with whom she made her home, Lester Welch of Brooksville FL and James "Jim" Welch and wife Ceille of Columbia, SC; one son-in- law, Donald Carbee; seven grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; one great, great grandchild; and one sister, Helen Wheatley of Ormond Beach, FL.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Carbee of Brooksville, FL; one brother; and six sisters.
Funeral services will be held in South Ryegate at a later date this summer. Burial will be in Pinehurst cemetery, South Ryegate.
