Capt. Bernard Hickey

BURLINGTON - Capt. Bernard Joseph Hickey, longtime resident of the Burlington area, died peacefully in his sleep at his home at Wake Robin in Shelburne on Monday, Feb. 7, 2000. He was 90, having enjoyed 25 years of retirement living after a 40-year career as a skipper with United States Lines.

Born in Fitchburg, Mass., on March 21, 1909, he was the son of Michael J. Hickey and Nonie McDonald Hickey. On Oct. 8, 1957, he married Evelyn M. (Atkins D'Amato) Hickey. She died on Sept. 17, 1982.

He attended Boston University before joining United States Lines as a merchant seaman in 1936. Fair-skinned, he spent his life at sea, and earned the nickname of "Red," which was to stick with him his whole life. As a merchant marine and Naval Reserve officer during World War II, he had four ships sunk from beneath him, two merchant ships by mines before Pearl Harbor, then two Navy armed AK cargo vessels after the U.S. entered the war.

The fourth sinking, by a German Raider in the South Atlantic, resulted in his being taken prisoner by the Germans, who landed him into a Japanese prisoner of war camp in Indonesia. He spent the final three years of the war enduring the brutal conditions in the Japanese labor camps.

After the war, he rejoined the shipping company United States Lines, moving swiftly up the ranks to become its top skipper, and was given the assignment of breaking in its newest ships. His career spanned 40 years.

He remained in the Naval Reserves and rose to the rank of commander. He was called to duty to skipper a vessel in the eastern Mediterranean during the Beirut crisis of 1958. He was particularly proud of his reserve assignment as executive officer of the Navy Aircraft Carrier John F. Kennedy during her maiden sea trials off of the coast of Virginia.

During his years in Burlington he served as navigator of the well-known ocean racing yacht New World, owned by Dr. Phil Davis. When he retired, he was asked to teach a navigation course at the University of Vermont.

He is survived by his sister, Helen Barrett; two daughters, Marianne Lancer and her husband, Bruce, of Bristol, and Christine Corcoran and her husband, James, of Florida; two sons, Vincent Hickey and his wife, Carol, of West Berkshire, and Richard D'Amato and his wife, Dorothy, of Annapolis, Md.; and nine grandchildren. He is also survived by his companion of many years, Eileen Gilbert of Shelburne.

Bernard was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn M. Hickey, and by brothers Thomas Hickey, Walter Hickey and Edward Hickey, and sister Mary Hickey.

Captain Hickey was a member of the Lake Champlain Yacht Club, the Navy League, the Council of American Master Mariners, and the Retired Officers Association USNR.

He was an avid Red Sox fan, and enjoyed and supported watching the endeavors of his children and grandchildren.

A memorial service was held on Friday in Burlington. Memorial donations may be made to the Shelburne Rescue Squad.

John Buttolph

SKANEATELES, N.Y. - John L. Buttolph Jr, 82, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Aug. 30, 1999, following a series of strokes.

Known all his life as "Lute," he was born Oct. 15, 1916, in Middlebury, Vt., the son of John L. Buttolph Sr. and Mabel Martin Buttolph. Shortly after his birth, he moved with his family to the "Buttolph" dairy farm in East Shoreham, Vt., where he was brought up without benefit of electric power or telephone service. He received his elementary school education at the "Buttolph" school on the farm property. His mother, who was a phi beta kappa graduate of Middlebury College (class of 1911), was the school teacher. He went on to graduate from Brigham Academy in Bakersfield, Vt., class of 1934.

He was further educated at Middlebury College, joining the long lineage of family members who had attended the college, dating back to the very first graduating class of 1804. He was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon.

On July 5, 1941, he married Marjorie Elizabeth Howe of New York City.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army and volunteered for OCS following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Capt. Buttolph became the commander of D Battery, 377th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion (attached to the 4th Infantry Division) and went ashore at Utah Beach, Normandy, on D-Day +6. He saw action at the Battle of the Bulge and was among the first allies to enter Paris. He was also a member of the forces which liberated Dachau north of Munich. Following the end of hostilities in 1945, Lute was placed in charge of the small village of Schnaittach. In later years he became an active supporter of the biannual reunions of his old Army unit.

After leaving the Army, he teamed up with a college fraternity brother and founded Park and Buttolph, a hardwood milling company in Gabriels, N.Y., in the Adirondacks. Park and Buttolph specialized in the manufacture of hardwood bed slats, and at one time enjoyed virtually a nationwide monopoly. Later, he bought out his partner and moved the plant to Frankfort, N.Y., near Utica.

It was during his travels with Woodbury that he discovered Skaneateles Lake, near Syracuse, N.Y., and immediately fell in love with this body of water. Locating lakefront residential property that he could afford became something of an obsession for him. It took quite a long time, but in 1957, the family moved to the old Ralph Fisher place on the west shore of Skaneateles Lake, near Mandana.

In 1966, Lute started his own company, specializing in wholesale shipments of lumber and building supplies. Today, the Buttolph Lumber Company is owned and run by his son Edward.

He was a lifelong outdoorsman and a dedicated hunter and fisherman. In later years, he could usually be seen motoring out into the lake before dawn, trolling for lake trout, salmon and rainbow. He loved to provide packages of frozen fish for his family and friends. He was the last surviving founding member of the Hardway Club, a hunting camp located deep in the Adirondack Mountains, near Noblesboro.

In addition to his wife, Marjorie, he is survived by his sons, John L. III of Morrisville, Vt., Edward A. and Kenneth G. of Skaneateles, and James M. of Rumney, N.H.; a daughter, Christine L. Buttolph of Burlington, Vt.; two brothers, Thomas R. of Orwell, Vt., and Edward E. of Brandon, Vt., a sister, Mabel H. Buttolph, of South Burlington; and seven grandchildren.
