Charles Mraz

MIDDLEBURY - Charles Mraz, 94, considered the father of modern bee-sting therapy, died early Monday morning, Sept. 13, 1999, at his home, surrounded by his family, following a brief illness.

He was born on July 26, 1905, in Woodside, New York City, son of Karl and Maria Mraz. Charles moved to Middlebury in 1928 and established Champlain Valley Apiaries.

He became a world-renowned beekeeper and maintained New England's largest apiary for more than 60 years. He traveled to South and Central America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East as a consultant on beekeeping methods and technology. In 1992 the American Beekeeping Federation recognized him among the five most distinguished beekeepers in this country for his advances in commercial beekeeping. He was a columnist and contributing writer for Gleanings in Bee Culture and the American Bee Journal, respectively.

He was recognized in this country as the pioneer of bee-venom therapy, the use of bee stings to treat auto-immune diseases. He initiated clinical research with scientist at Sloane-Kettering Institute and Walter Reed Army Institute. He established the standard for purity for dried whole venom for the FDA and was the supplier of venom to pharmaceutical companies and independent researchers throughout the world.

He was a founding member and Executive Director of the American Apitherapy Society, a nonprofit educational organization which is dedicated to the medical use of bee products. He earned the gratitude of thousands of people who traveled to his home for bee venom treatments or met him at apitherapy conferences around the country. In 1994 he authored "Health and The Honey Bee," a recounting of his experiences with bee venom therapy. He did not charge for his treatments which were often sought by arthritis sufferers.

He was an avid gardener and was dedicated to the practice of organic farming. He was a president and board member of the Natural Food and Farming Association, the precursor to the Northern Organic Farming Association (NOFA) He was appreciated for his commitment to the town of Middlebury through his work as a commissioner of the water and cemetery committees and his loyalty to the Middlebury Cooperative Credit Union.

He was a long-time contributor to the Rotary, Masons and Shriners and a member in the 1930s of the Middlebury Ski Club, which ran a ski slope on Chipman Hill and developed the original ski slopes at the Middlebury College Snow Bowl.

He is survived by his wife Pamela; his five children and their spouses, Charles and Lea Mraz of Destin, Fla., William and Patricia Mraz of Middlebury, Marna Ehrech and Dean Wiederin of Shelburne, Laurie and Tom Zwaan of Exeter, N.H., and Michelle Mraz and Mitchell Kurker of Burlington; several stepchildren; 13 grandchildren ranging in age from 42 to seven weeks old; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife Letitia, in 1948, and his wife Margaret in 1992; and two sisters, Ann and Marie.

Funeral services were held on Thursday morning at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church on the Middlebury Green. Graveside committal services and burial followed in Middlebury cemetery.

N. Bruce Hill

FERRISBURGH - N. Bruce Hill, 76, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, at Porter Hospital in Middlebury.

He was born on April 28, 1923, in Worcester, Mass., the son of Walter L. and Marie C. (Anderson) Hill.

He grew up in North Ferrisburgh where his parents owned a store. He later served in the European Theater during World War II. He spent most of his career as a truck driver.

He was a member of the North Ferrisburgh United Methodist Church and Vergennes American Legion Post 14. He was a founding member of the Ferrisburgh Fire Department and the North Ferrisburgh Fish and Game Club.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Caroline (Muzzy) Hill of Ferrisburgh; four children and their spouses, David and Donna of Hinesburg, Norman and Carol of Rutland, Paula and Eric of South Burlington, and Sylvia and David of Vergennes; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Darwin, and a brother, Darwin.

Services were held Friday at the North Ferrisburgh cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad, Vergennes, Vt. 05491.

Catherine Devino

BRANDON - Catherine Devino, 77, died Friday evening, Sept. 3, 1999, at her home in Brandon.

She was born in Brandon on Dec. 17, 1921. She was the daughter of George & Rose (Loomis) Devino. She received her education at the Perkins Institute for the Blind in Waltham, Mass. She has been a resident of Brandon all her life. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside committal service and burial will take place on Thursday at the family lot in Forest Dale cemetery.

Mary Bunting

BRANDON - Mary (Gagliano) Bunting of Brandon, formerly of Mineola, N.Y., died on Sept. 8, at Shard Villa, in West Salisbury.

She was born at the home of her parents, Luigi and Francesca (Gab-riel) Gagliano in New York City on July 31, 1909, the fourth of five living children of Italian immigrants. Her brothers, Charles, Michael and Benjamin and her sister, Bessie, all predeceased her.

She had married Frederick Angus Bunting in 1928, whom she divorced shortly thereafter and singlehandedly raised her two sons, Frederick Louis and Frank Lawrence Bunting.

She had worked at the Long Island Lighting Company in Mineola and Hicksville, N.Y., for about 26 years. Prior to those days. she was a single, working mother who held positions at Reinke's Florist and Nassau Hospital, both in Mineola and at the Dade Brothers' Furniture Factory, out by Roosevelt Field on Long Island, where she diligently participated in the fabrication of plywood gliders for the Army Air Corps' use during World War II.

She is survived by her two sons; two nieces; five grandsons; and five great-grandchildren.

Her great-grandson, Michael Bunting of Norwalk, Connecticut, predeceased her one year ago.

There will be no calling hours. A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will follow at Pine Hill cemetery in Brandon. Contri-butions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Columbus Smith Estate, Shard Villa Road, Salis-bury, Vt. 05769.

Gertrude Greene

CORNWALL- After a long illness, Gertrude Louise Naylor Greene of Cornwall, died Monday, Sept. 6, 1999.

Gertie, as she loved to be called, is survived by her sisters, Ruth Pollard of Lawrenceville, N.Y., and Jean Bibeau of Middlebury; a brother, Richard D. Naylor of Salisbury; many nieces and nephews; and her great-nephews and -nieces.

She was predeceased by her husband, William; her mother, Cecile (Dickinson) Naylor; her father, George F. Naylor Sr.; sisters Helen Hotte and Jacqueline Greene; brothers George F. Naylor Jr. and James Naylor Sr.; her brothers-in-law, Simon Hotte and Louis Bibeau; and her sisters-in-law, Jesse Naylor and Wanneta (Naylor) Sylvester.

She loved and enjoyed her flowers, birds, dog, garden and all her special trinkets, knickknacks, friends and relatives. She also had many CB radio friends.

Donations can be made in her name to the Addison County Humane Society, 66 Boardman St., Middlebury, Vt. 05753; or Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association. P.O. Box 504, Middlebury, Vt. 05753.

Private services will be held at a later date.

John Krawczyk

BENNINGTON - Mr. John F. Krawczyk, 85, of Bennington, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, at Bennington Health and Rehab Center following a long illness.

Born in Bennington, Sept. 1, 1914, he was the son of Albert and Agnes (Vorchenic) Krawczyk. He received his education at the Harwood Hill School in Bennington.

He first married the former Anna S. Kiczek on Jan. 25, 1947, at Our Lady of Carmel Church in Bayonne, N. J. Mrs. Krawczyk died Aug. 21, 1975. He later married the former Vera O'Brien, who died Aug. 15, 1991.

In earlier years, he was employed in farming and later at the former BenMont Corporation. His last employment was as a watchman at the BCIC building in North Bennington.

He was a former member of the Bennington Rural Fire Department.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Stanley J. and Georgette Krawczyk of Bridport; two granddaughters; a sister, Julia Lominsky of Bennington; four brothers, Joseph Krawczyk and Raymond Krawczyk both of Bennington, Peter Krawczyk of Pownal and Paul Krawczyk of Ticonderoga, N.Y.; and nieces, nephews, great-nieces, a great- nephew and cousins. He was predeceased by a sister and two brothers, Veronica Coonradt, William Krawczyk and Michael Krawczyk.

The funeral was held Wednesday, Sept. 8, at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Activities Fund at Bennington Health and Rehab Center through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, Vt. 05201.

Elizabeth Murray

MIDDLEBURY - Elizabeth Mary Murray, 98, passed away Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, surrounded by her family at the Addison House Community Care Home in Middlebury.

She was born in Cornwall, May 14, 1901, the daughter of Charles and Lillian (Maheau) Moran.

She was a lifelong resident of the Cornwall and Middlebury area. In 1946 she began working at the Van Raalt Co. in Middlebury as a seamstress where she later became an inspector before retiring in 1966. She continued her needlework and quilting at home and loved her flowers and gardening.

She was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Church in Middlebury.

Surviving are her son, Walter A. Murray of Valley Center, Calif.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter A. Murray, in 1956; a daughter, Barbara Cole, in 1984; and an infant daughter, Lillian Murray, in 1922.

A Mass of Christian burial was set for Thursday at 3 p.m. in St. Mary's Church, Middlebury. Graveside committal services and burial were to follow in St. Mary cemetery, Middlebury.

Archie Euber

SARANAC LAKE, N.Y. - Archie Edson Euber, 75, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

He was born in Goshen, Vt., on April 16, 1924. He was the son of Archie and Marion (Williams) Euber. He received his early education in local Brandon, Vt., schools.

He had served in the U.S. Army in 1943, but was honorably discharged with a medical disability. In his earlier years, he had farmed in the Orwell, Vt., area, but moved on to Moriah, N.Y. He has been a resident of the Saranac Lake Region since 1952. He was forced to retire due to disability in 1954.

Surviving are his wife, Lena, (LaFlame) Euber of Lake Clear, N.Y., whom he married in Forest Dale, Vt., on Aug. 20, 1942; three sons, Wallace, Christopher and Larry Euber; two daughters, Lena Marie Skeels of Lake Clear, and Patricia Ann Daniels of Crown Point; four sisters, Iola Hayes and Marion Stearns of Brandon, Vt., Violet Julius of Shaftsbury, Vt., and Vivian Dubois of Rutland, Vt.; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside committal service and burial took place on Saturday in the family lot at Forest Dale cemetery in Brandon, Vt.

Doris DeVine

FERRISBURGH - Doris E. DeVine, 82, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, following a battle with cancer.

She was born on April 29, 1917, in Monkton, the daughter of Carroll and Kathryn (Beers) Palmer.

She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Vergennes. She also participated in the women's organization E.C.W. and as a lay reader. She taught sewing at the Weeks School in Vergennes for 12 years.

She is survived by her husband, Albert DeVine of Ferrisburgh; two children, Jack and his wife, Gloria DeVine, of Ferrisburgh, and Judy and her husband, Alan Langeway, of Panton; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Leah Ball of North Ferrisburgh; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers and a sister.

A memorial service was held Wednesday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Vergennes. Interment will be at a later date.

Alice J. Bostwick

BRISTOL - Alice J. Bostwick, 93, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, at Porter Hospital in Middlebury.

She was born on May 19, 1906, in New Haven, the daughter of Orrin and Gertrude (Sayles) Wells.

She spent the majority of her adult life in Iowa and returned to Bristol in the 1970s.

She was a member of the Bristol Federated Church and the Bristol American Legion Post 19 Auxiliary. She enjoyed fishing.

She is survived by three children, Dorothy Coleman of New Haven, Clayton and his wife, Shirley Holcomb, of Bristol and Earl and his wife, Cindy Wells, of Iowa; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol. Interment will be in Prospect cemetery in Vergennes.

There will be no calling hours. Contributions may be made to the Bristol Rescue Squad, Bristol, Vt. 05443.
