Dorothy Putnam

SANFORD, FLA. - Dorothy L. Putnam, 88, of Azala Lane, Sanford, Fla., died July 19, 1999, at Central Regional Hospital from heart failure following a short illness.

Born May 19, 1911, in Wardsboro, Vt., she was the daughter of Edgar and Claire Boyd.

She married William A. Putnam on Sept. 7, 1931.

Mrs. Putnam was employed by Green Mountain House, West Wardsboro, as an executive housekeeper. She later went to work for Basin Harbor Club, where she held the same position.

In 1990, she moved to central Florida.

Survivors include a daughter, Helen B. Runion, of Sanford, Fla.; two sons, Leo Putnam of Walpole, N.H. and Erwin Putnam of Fla.; 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grand-children and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, William A. Putnam, and a daughter Beverly Tunnell of Washington.

A small graveside service was held at West Wardsboro cemetery, Wardsboro, on Aug. 28.

Dr. Dennis Ross

MIDDLEBURY - Dr. Dennis Ross, 52, died at his Middlebury home on Aug. 23, 1999, after a seven-month battle with cancer.

He was born June 7, 1947, in Fairview Park, Ohio, the son of Harley and Gladys Ross. He enlisted in the Navy in 1966 as a Corpsman. He served two terms in Vietnam with the Marines in 1967 and 1968.

After his military service in 1970 he formally began his career in nursing. He received an associate degree in 1971 from Cuyahoga Community College in Ohio, a bachelor's degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1974, and a master's degree from the University of California in San Francisco in 1978. Dennis and his wife Carol, moved to Vermont where Dennis began a 20-year career as a Professor of Nursing at Castleton State College where he taught classroom and clinical surgical nursing to sophomores. He earned a second master's in education from Castleton and continued on to complete his doctoral work in nursing at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland in 1992. He also joined the Army Reserves from December 1989 to December 1996.

His contribution to the nursing profession has been extensive, including six years of service on the Vermont State Board of Nursing. He was honored with the Vermont State Nurse's Association Nursing Excellence Award in 1992. He served several terms on the Editorial Board of the National Association of Orthopedic Nurses and later worked as their project director for research from 1992 to 1996.

Since September 1992, he had been on the faculty for the nursing program of the New York Regents External Degree Program of the State University of New York. He authored many publications for nursing journals, textbooks and recently co-edited a reference guide for nurses.

He is more widely known as "Doctor Doo" and will be remembered for his email and verbal jokes, plus his dedication to the stairmaster at Vermont Sun and biking and for his complete dedication to maintaining high standards in the nursing profession.

He is survived by his mother, Gladys, and sister, Kate, of Montpelier; brothers Dave and Ron of Meriden, Conn. and Glendora, Calif.; his son Dennis Jr. of Cincinnati, Ohio; and Carol, his wife of 25 years, and sons Ian and Brogan of Middlebury.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at 3 p.m. at the Castleton State College Fine Arts Center. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dennis Ross Nursing Scholarship Fund c/o Institutional Advancement Office, Castleton State College, Castleton, Vt. 05735 or to the Hospice Program of the Addison County Home Health Care Agency, P.O. Box 754 , Middlebury, Vt. 05753.

Elizabeth Unger Baird

NORTH CHITTENDEN — Elizabeth Unger Baird, 86, of North Chittenden, Vt., died peacefully, surrounded by her children, on Sept. 15, 2004, at Fletcher Allen Hospital in Burlington.
Elizabeth was born March 19, 1918, in Pforzheim, Germany, daughter of Emil and Emilie (Klittich) Seemann. Her family immigrated to the United States in 1928, settling in New York City, where she graduated from the Julia Richmond School in 1935. On June 14, 1941, she married Hans Unger, who served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following the war, they lived with their three children on Long Island, N.Y.
In 1955 they moved to Vermont, where they owned and managed Valley View Cabins on Route 7 in Brandon. In February 1960, Hans Unger died. As a single parent, Elizabeth worked several jobs and was able to send all three children to college. She served as Brandon town tax collector from 1960 to 1966 and worked for the Vermont State Commission of Employment from 1963 to 1975.
On Nov. 1, 1968, she married lifelong Chittenden dairy farmer Richard Baird. She was elected to the Chittenden Board of Selectmen, serving from 1969 to 1973, and was Chittenden justice of the peace from 1973 to 1980. Her volunteer service also included working with the Rutland Natural Resources Conservation District for 18 years.
Elizabeth enjoyed traveling, especially with her children. Her trips included vacations in Mexico, the Caribbean, and Germany and Switzerland on several different occasions to visit relatives and her birthplace. She loved the view from her home in Chittenden and her swimming pool, where her grandchildren learned to swim and where family and friends gathered during the summer for cookouts and birthday celebrations.
She was a member of Brandon Congregational Church where she had been active in the choir and women’s’ fellowship.
She was predeceased by Richard Baird, who died May 31 2004. She is survived by a sister, Toni Levine, of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; three children, Richard Unger and his wife, Barbara, of Weybridge, Astrid Adkinson and her husband, Bill, of Mineral, Va., and Gary Unger and his wife, Linda, of Bristol; three stepchildren, Richard Baird and his wife, Amy, of Albuquerque, N.M., Robert Baird and his wife, Bonnie, of Chittenden, and Bonnie Robinson and her husband, Doug, of Brandon; six grandchildren, Meredith Unger Goldsmith, Jason Unger, Hans Unger, Lauren Unger, Katherine Unger and Travis Unger; four step-grandchildren, Eric Robinson, Corey Robinson, Averie Baird and Jenna Baird; and two great-grandchildren, Annora Liesel Unger and Soren Goldsmith.
Funeral services were held at the Brandon Congregation Church on Sunday, Sept. 19. Burial services followed at Pine Hill cemetery in Brandon.

ANNA B. BOOSKA

BRISTOL — Anna B. Booska, 71, died Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury.
She was born on March 7, 1933, in Bristol, the daughter of Ben and Viola L. (Guy) Booska.
She was a member of the Addison Eagles Club and Vergennes American Legion Post 14.
She is survived by two sons, Larry Booska and his companion, Betty Boisvert, of Middlebury, and Mike Booska of Bristol; two granddaughters and two great-grandsons; a sister-in-law, Vergie Booska of Vergennes; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by six brothers and sisters.
Funeral services were held Wednesday in Bristol, with interment in Greenwood cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bristol Rescue Squad, Bristol, VT 05443, or Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Middlebury, VT 05753.

Beatrice M Hurlburt, 74

Starksboro — Beatrice M Hurlburt, 74, died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury.
She was born on June 27, 1930, in Bristol, the daughter of Newton and Lorraine (Wheelock) Hurlburt.
She is survived by two brothers, Earl Hurlburt of Salisbury and Bernard Hurlburt of Starksboro; two sisters, Bernice Hurlburt of Starksboro and Marion Provoncha of Bristol; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday in Bristol, with interment in Greenwood cemetery in Bristol.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Middlebury, VT 05753.

Delcia E. Miller

VERGENNES — Delcia E. Miller, 85, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.
She was born March 9, 1919, in Taunton, Mass., the daughter of Romeo and Albertine (Grenier) Meunier. She grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y., and she raised two children, William and Marie. She then moved to Vermont to help take care of her granddaughters, Amy and Lynn.
She was a member of Vergennes Congregational Church in Vergennes. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She did needlework and handcrafts, and volunteered for the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program.
She is survived by two children, William Miller and Marie Donovan; three grandchildren; a brother, William Meunier of Long Island, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Thursday morning at Vergennes Congregational Church. Interment will be at a later date.

Judy C. Riker

WOODSTOCK, Conn. — Judy C. Riker, 63, of Woodstock, Conn., died of a heart attack on Sept. 20, 2004.
She was born July 14, 1941, in Sinco, Canada, and worked as a model in New York City. She lived many places in the United States and spent 14 years in Ripton, Vt., with her two children. She had worked as a travel agent in Middlebury, Vt., and an office administrator at the Tufts Medical Center in Boston in the Health and Nutritional Research Division.
She and her husband enjoyed the last six years in their home on Roseland Lake with their two golden retrievers, the osprey, Canada geese and blue heron.
She leaves her husband, Jim Riker; a son, Kurt Stahl, and his wife, Deidre, of Chelmsford, Mass.; a daughter, Heidi Alberico, and her husband, Steve, of Rutland, Vt.; a brother, Bob Culver, of Centerport, N.Y.; a sister, Mary Ann Isenberg of Pennsylvania; and two grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her parents, Marion (Wheeler) Culver and Rupert Stanton Culver, and her stepmother Elinor Culver.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 25, at 1 p.m., at her home on Roseland Lake, 306 Senexet Rd, Woodstock, Conn.

Grace S. Rollason

AMHERST, Mass. — Grace S. Rollason of Amherst and a summer resident of Lake Dunmore in Vermont, wife of H. Duncan Rollason Jr., died on Sept. 19, 2004, in Amherst.
She was born in Richmond Hill, N.Y. She held a B.A. from Hunter College and a Ph.D. from New York University. She had held research positions at Harvard University and Amherst College, and served on the faculty of University of Massachusetts Amherst from 1965 until her retirement in 1985. While at the University of Massachusetts, in the Department of Zoology, she served on the board of the Bachelor’s Degree with Individual Concentration Program.
She was a member of the honorary society, Sigma Xi, and a president of the chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. She had been a Scout leader and a member of the First Congregational Church of Amherst, where she had served on the board of trustees. She was a member and past president of the Amherst Woman’s Club, a member and past president of the Retired Faculty Association of the University of Massachusetts and a member and secretary of the Five College Learning in Retirement Council.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Betsy, of Burlington, Vt.: a son, Duncan, and a grandson, Duncan, and his mother, Holly, of Middlebury, Vt.; and Holly, Sue and Chris who spent so much time in the house they thought of her as their second mother.
There will be a memorial service on Sept. 26 at 2:30 p.m. at the First Congregational Church of Amherst.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites contributions in her memory to the Gunnery Prep School, Alumni Office, Washington, CT 06793, or the charity of their choice.

Fern E. Sherman

New Haven — Fern E. “Emily” Sherman, 82, died on Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.
She was born April 17, 1922, in Burlington, the daughter of James and Ida Mae (Clark) Downes.
She was predeceased by her husband, Alfred Sherman, on Aug. 26, 1975.
She is survived by three children, Winslow Sherman, Merideth Tucker and Kristina Young, all of New York; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, Burt Downes, and a sister, Ida Kilcollins; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday in Bristol, with interment in Evergreen cemetery in New Haven.
Memorial contributions may be made to Helen Porter Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center, 30 Porter Drive Middlebury, VT 05753.

Eliza Marie Skidmore

BRISTOL — Eliza Marie Skidmore died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.
She is survived by her parents, William and Amy (Smith) Skidmore of Bristol; maternal grandparents Donna and Harvey Smith of New Haven; paternal grandparents Nancy and James Skidmore of Bristol; maternal great- grandmother Gertrude Gerry of New Haven; paternal great-grandmothers Laura Burritt of Bristol and Elsie Skidmore of New Jersey; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services will be held Saturday, Sept. 25, at 11 a.m. at the Weybridge Hill cemetery in Weybridge.

James Lawrence Stark

ORWELL — James Lawrence Stark, 68, died on Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling, W.Va.
He was born in Orwell on Nov. 12, 1935, the son of Lawrence and Margaret (Aimes) Stark. He received his education at Austine School for the Deaf in Brattleboro and at Printing School in Rome, N.Y.
He then moved to Akron, Ohio, where he worked as a machine operator in the printing business. He was forced to retire due to disability in 1990 and moved to Neffs, Ohio.
He is survived by a brother, John W. Stark of Milton; a sister, Shirin “Sherry” Paquette of Bristol; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, and by a sister, Sarah Armina, in December 2003.
A private graveside committal service and burial will take place at a later date in the family lot at Mountain View cemetery in Orwell.
Memorial gifts may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Graham K. Walden

SALISBURY—Graham Kenneth Walden, 76, died on Sept. 14, 2004, at Porter Hospital in Middlebury, following a two-and-a-half-year struggle with cancer.
He was born Dec. 14, 1927, in Luton, England, to Edwin and Winifred Walden, born Haslett. He attended school at the Nautical College in Pangbourne, and Durham University, England.
He became a master mariner in the Merchant Marine, and a lieutenant in the British Royal Navy. After 12 years at sea, he became a corrosion engineer in Oslo, Norway, and London, England, followed by 10 years with the Zinc Development Association in London.
In 1969 the Walden family moved to Pittsburgh, Pa., where he joined St. Joe Minerals Corp (later acquired by Fluor Inc.) as manager of marketing. He then joined Smith Industries in Houston, Texas, as vice president of galvanizing.
In 1977 the family moved to Salisbury to acquire the North 40, which they renamed Lake Dunmore Lodge. After the 1979 fire of the main building, he maintained the remaining buildings for rental purposes, and added three new buildings to the property.
He had a lifelong interest in photography, producing many pictures sold in galleries and also in the form of greeting cards.
His public service included a long association with the Addison County Community Action Group (ACCAG), and Middlebury Hospice Volunteer Services.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Inge; and a son, Prof. Graham R. Walden of Columbus, Ohio.
A memorial service will be held at the Salisbury Congregational Church on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 2 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be sent to ACCAG or to Middlebury Hospice Volunteer Services.

Arthur E. Ploof Sr., 88

Ripton -- Arthur E. Ploof Sr., 88, died on Thursday, Oct. 14, at Porter Hospital in Middlebury.

He was born on Sept. 15, 1916, in Weybridge, the son of Edward and Blanche (Olcutt) Ploof. He lived in Ripton for all of his adult life, was a self-employed logger, and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He married Bernice Dragon on May 7, 1938. She predeceased him in July 1989.

He is survived by his children, Arthur Jr. of Salisbury, Carl of Vancouver, Wash., Patricia Cota of Essex Junction, Marjorie Scribner of North Clarendon, and Joanne Hallock of Worcester, Vt.; a sister, Doris Munson of Florida; 21 grandchildren and 20 great- grandchildren.

There will be no funeral service or visitation. Private burial was in the West Salisbury cemetery.

Allen G. Mayville, 88

CHICHESTER, N.H. -- Allen G. Mayville, 88, formerly of Shoreham, Vt., died on Oct. 7, 2004, at home after a short illness.

He was born Sept. 18, 1916, in Milton, Vt., the son of Frank O. and Marion P. (Adkins) Mayville.

He was married to Virginia I. Hallock on Aug. 18, 1940, in Ellicott City, Md.

He worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service, as a district conservationist. He was in that position for 20 years in Vermont and for 14 years in New Hampshire before his retirement in 1972.

He was a lifetime member of the Masonic Independent Lodge No. 10 in Orwell, Vt.

He volunteered with AARP, where he served on the State Legislative Committee and on the Capital City Task Force in Concord.

Since retirement, he enjoyed farming, looking after his Scotch Highlander cattle, and gardening.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Virginal I. (Hallock) Mayville of Chichester; six sons, Allen G. Mayville Jr., Thomas E. Mayville and Loren T. Mayville, all of Chichester, Lynn A. Mayville of Alton, Timothy M. Mayville of Weare and Theodore M. Mayville of Deering; six daughters, Tanya M. Jackson of Florida, Patricia A. Milligan and Virginia A. Mayville, both of Concord, Dorothy J. Mayville of Sanford, Maine, Kathryn I. Mayville of Chichester and Laurie E. Mayville of Brighton, Mass.; a brother, Theodore Mayville of Vermont; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by Arthur Mayville, and a sister, Elizabeth Noyes.
