Florence Elizabeth Cram, 73

MIDDLEBURY — Florence Elizabeth Cram, 73, wife of Francis Cram, passed away October 28, 2004.

She was born October 4, 1931 in Wilmington, Delaware and married Francis Cram on February 17, 1949. She worked at Van Raalte and Middlebury College.

Florence is survived by her husband, five children, Carol Williams and husband Pete, Patty Hendry and husband Gordon, Gary Cram and wife Debbie, Bruce Cram and wife Sharon, and Amy Cram. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, all of whom loved her dearly. Florence will be sadly missed by everyone who crossed her path.

The Funeral Service will be held at the family lot in the Cook cemetery, Ripton, VT on Monday, November 1, 2004 at 11:30 am; The Reverend Jill Robinson, Pastor of the Middlebury United Methodist Church will officiate.

The family entrusted Sanderson Funeral Service of Middlebury with arrangements.

William Augustus Reuschel, 82

BRISTOL -- William Augustus Reuschel, 82, died suddenly at his home on Tuesday, October 26, 2004, of an aneurysm. He had been in declining health for over a year.

He was born in Burlington on July 30, 1922, the second of four children of Augustus and Frances (Snow) Reuschel.

He was a 1940 graduate of Cathedral High School in Burlington. At age 18 he entered the religious order, Franciscans of the Atonement, at Graymoor, N.Y. He enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps in 1942 and served in several battles in the Pacific, including the bloody battle at Tarawa in 1943. His experiences in World War II made him a longtime and outspoken anti-war advocate.

He lived in Stamford, Conn., from 1964 until 1998, when he moved to Bristol. He was retired from the Perkin-Elmer Corporation of Norwalk, Conn., where he worked from 1964 until 1986. He was a project manager there in the creation of NASA's space telescope. Before moving to Connecticut he had worked at Bell Aircraft and General Electric in Burlington.

He is survived by his four nieces, goddaughter Kathryn Roberts; Judith Brown; Susan Carcieri; and Nora Albino, all of Worcester, Mass.; and by a cousin, Robert "Ruby" Reuschel of Burlington and his family.

He was predeceased by an infant brother; a sister Mary Patricia, and her husband, Robert Brown; and by his younger brother, John, who died in April 2004.

A Mass was held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Burlington on Monday morning. His ashes will be interred beside his parents' graves at Mount Calvary cemetery in Burlington.

SHIRLEY MAE (COLLINS) EVARTS

NEW HAVEN/VERGENNES -- Shirley Mae (Collins) Evarts, 74, died on Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, surrounded by family, at Porter Hospital in Middlebury.

She was born in Willsboro, N.Y., on Oct. 22, 1930, to Edward and Mabel (Shepard) Collins.

She spent most of her adult life raising nine children with her late husband Judson Evarts in New Haven. She also worked for many years at Simmonds Precision/ Goodrich before retiring.

Family members recalled that during years of raising children she also made room for most of the neighborhood kids, and taught most of the kids on South St. how to swim. She was an avid card player. She was the first one to start a game of baseball, softball, kickball, or capture the flag. She spent many years following her children in whatever sports event they were participating in at the time. There were many debates with her sister because of the Red Sox/Yankee rivalry.

She is survived by five daughters Linda and Curt Cooper of Charlotte; Terry and Jim Booska of Bristol; Pam Whittemore and Howard of Bristol; Nancy and Ray Hadley of Colchester; Cherri and Bruce Jolley of Colchester; and two sons, Robert Evarts of Vergennes; and Timmy and Judy Evarts of Monkton; 14 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Beverly Dickerson of Willsboro, N.Y.; a brother, Edward Collins and his wife, Doris, of Willsboro, N.Y.; and by many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Judson, in December 1970; her son, Scott Cross, in May 1999, and his father, Charlie Cross; her son, Tommy, in July 2001; her stepson, Juddy, in August 1965, her daughter-in-law Kathy in July 2004; her brother, Harold Collins and his wife Barb of Ausable Chasm, N.Y., and her brother-in-law Milton Dickerson of Willsboro, N.Y.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 7, at Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes. Interment will be in Grandview cemetery in Charlotte. Friends may call at the Funeral Home on Monday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Donald W. LaRose

DOVER, N.H. -- Donald W. LaRose, 80, of Dover died Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, at Wentworth Douglass Hospital, after a long illness.

Born Jan. 13, 1924, in Middlebury, Vt., he was the son of George and Margaret (Whitman) LaRose, and attended grade school in Middlebury.

He had lived in Dover for the past 22 years. He was formerly employed at the Old Mill Furniture Company in Woodsville, N.H., and later for Waste Management in Woodsville, N.H. He spent many summers traveling with the Granite State Shows carnival as a merry-go-round operator. Family members say he loved the carnival life and traveling to beautiful parts of New England.

He was a patient at the White River Junction and Manchester VA hospitals. He enjoyed playing cards and horseshoes. He was also a member of the American Legion in Woodsville, N.H.

He is survived by his companion of 23 years, Sandra Frost; his stepchildren, Cindy, Betty, Penny, Albert, Mary and Donna Coffin, Sandi, Rick and David Frost, Paula Smith, Donna Kennedy and Daniel Frost; and many stepgrandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Alberta (Coffin) LaRose, two stepsons, Steven and Jamie Frost, and his stepfather, Harry Renner.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m., in the chapel of the R. M. Edgerly & Son Inc, 86 South Main St, Rochester, N.H.

E. Jean Merrill

BRANDON -- E. Jean Merrill, 72, died on Tuesday morning, Nov. 30, 2004, at Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington.

She was born on June 27, 1932, in Lincoln, N.H., the daughter of Lawrence and Ella (Kinne) Berry. She graduated from Woodstock, N.H., High School and lived most of her life in the North Woodstock, Piermont and Thornton, N.H., areas. She moved to Brandon in 2001.

She was a foster grandmother at the Vermont Achievement Center in Rutland. She was a member of Thread Connections in Middlebury, where she spent many hours quilting with friends. She was a talented craftsperson in crocheting, knitting, ceramics, oil painting and woodworking.

She is survived by three daughters, Melanie Marchetti and her husband, Albert, of Sicklerville, N.J., Karen Ruby and her husband, David, of Rutland, and Penny Thorburn of Plant City, Fla.; three sisters, Austie "Candy" Mellett and her husband, Bill, of Woodstock, N.H., Dawn Sherrill White of Las Vegas, Nev., and Melody Cote of Woonsocket, R.I.; seven grandchildren and four stepgrandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Kathleen Stevens; a sister, Bonnie Coleman; and a granddaughter, Abby Leigh Marchetti.

At her request there will be no public funeral service.

Christopher Lee Trombley, 28

PENN YAN, N.Y. -- Christopher Lee Trombley, 28, of Penn Yan, N.Y., died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004.

He was born March 1, 1976, in Middlebury, Vt., and moved to the Finger Lakes region in 1997. He enjoyed being with his children, riding his motorcycle, snowboarding and outdoor sports.

He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Susan and Frank Lussier of Marathon, N.Y.; a stepsister, Larken Lussier of Virginia; Bonnie Dillon, the mother of his children, Zoe and Reece Trombley; a maternal grandmother, Catherine Trombley, of Hancock, Vt., step-grandparents, Irene and Douglas Kelly of Winooski, Vt.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services were held in Penn Yan on Friday, with burial at Lakeview cemetery.

A trust fund is being established in his memory at the National Bank of Geneva, Penn Yan Branch.

Simone Marie (Racine) Vanier

ADDISON -- Simone Marie (Racine) Vanier, 92, died peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, surrounded by family and caregivers, at Ringer Home Care in Vergennes.

She was born Aug. 21, 1912, in Casselman, Ontario, Canada, the daughter of Wilfred and Beresina (Thibert) Racine. She married Albert Vanier on Oct. 30, 1937; he predeceased her on Sept. 19, 1996.

In 1948 they moved to the United States, and in 1950 they settled in Addison where she and her husband farmed together until retirement. A French speaker, she never learned to speak English, family members said. In 1997, after the death of her husband, she returned to her home town of Casselman.

She loved to read and knit, and enjoyed cooking for her family.

She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Gisele and James Litch of Addison, and Gislaine (Gigi) and William Uzzell of Colchester; two sons and their wives, Bernard and Fleur Ange Vanier of Addison, and Serge and Nancy Vanier of Cornwall; 11 grandchildren and 17 great- grandchildren; a brother, Donat Racine, of Casselman; a sister, Theresa Beauchamp, of Quebec; many sisters-in-laws and a brother-in-law. She was predeceased by five brothers and a sister.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Vergennes, with interment in Prospect cemetery in Vergennes.

George Dudley Phinney

MIDDLEBURY -- George Dudley Phinney, 91, of Middlebury, died on Jan. 27, 2005, in the comfort of his home and in the care of his family.

He was born in Medford, Mass., on June 30, 1913, to Frank and Ella Phinney.

Dud was educated in the Milton public schools and attended Kents Hill School in Maine prior to enrolling at Middlebury College, where he captained the hockey and golf teams, and earned his B.A. in 1937. In 1947 he received his M.Ed. from the University of Vermont.

Dud began his teaching career at Middlebury High School in 1939, interrupted only by his graduate studies and service in World War II when he served as a communications specialist in Germany, and where he served for a short period of time under George Patton. He served for many years as chairman of the social science department, as an assistant principal, and for a brief period as acting principal. He also chaired the social science teachers section of the Vermont Education Association in 1965.

Dud coached golf and hockey for both the high school and Middlebury College, served as the high school's athletic director and was a member of the Vermont Headmaster's Association.

He was honored as Vermont Golf Coach of the Year in 1969, and received the Robert F. Pierce Memorial award in 1979 for his contributions to Northern Vermont athletics. The George D. Phinney Hockey Award was established in 1977 for presentation to the MUHS hockey player who contributed most to the team by his drive, determination and effort. In 1980, Dud was honored as the Eastern Regional Athletic Director of the year at a ceremony in Detroit, Mich. Dud completed his service at Middlebury Union High School in 1983.

Dud was active in the Middlebury College community, serving on the board of trustees from 1954 until 1966. He volunteered as an official for Middlebury College and NCAA ski meets for 32 years.

Dud will be best remembered for his love of teaching, his love of golf and for his passion for teaching golf. He served as the golf professional at the Middlebury College Golf Course for nearly 40 years until his retirement in 1991. He was a member of the Professional Golfer's Association and a founding member of the Vermont Professional Golfer's Association, for which he served as secretary-treasurer from 1969 until 1974. He freely shared his passion and knowledge of the game to generations of Middlebury residents.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Adele Marshall Phinney; his sons, Bert and George; his daughter-in-law, Jane, and his grandchildren Brian and John. He was predeceased by his brother and sister, Chandler and Martha.

The family would like to extend its thanks to those who offered love and support during Dud's final years, with a special thanks to his caregivers Sandy, Sarah, Chris, Lisa, Erica, Debbie and Brian.
Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Addison County Home Health, P. O. Box 754, Middlebury, VT 05753.

David R. Parker

Starksboro -- David R. Parker, 81, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at Star Farm Nursing Home in Burlington.

He was born on March 28, 1923, in Charlotte, the son of John D. and Elma (Jewell) Parker.

He was a member and past state president of The Eagles Club.

He was predeceased by his wife, Leona (Smith) Parker on Feb. 15, 1997.

He is survived by a daughter, Marie Mayo of Milton; three grandchildren and two great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers and a sister.

Funeral services were held Wednesday in Bristol, with interment in Mount St. Joseph cemetery.

Raymond John Lovejoy

MIDDLEBURY -- Raymond John Lovejoy, 59, of Middlebury, passed on January 31, 2005, at Fletcher Allen Health Care.

He was born on Oct. 6, 1945, in Burlington, the son of Raymond J. and Lula (Delphia) Lovejoy. He was predeceased by his father in 1947.

Ray graduated from Middlebury Union High School in 1965, and completed a one-year automotive course in Tennessee. He worked for Standard Register and Paul Steele Service Garage. For the past eight years, he was a volunteer driver for Addison County Transit Resources. He was also a member of the Sons of the American Legion. Everyone who knew him loved his sense of humor, his love of cars and his great devotion to his mother.

Ray is survived by his mother, Lula Spenard; his brother, Andre Spenard, and his wife, Valerie, and their children, Yvon and Rebecca Bilodeau of Portland, Ore.; his three sisters, Emelda Dahms and her husband, Ken, Anne Goodrich and her husband, Herb, and their daughter, Meghan, and Rose Richell and her husband, Randy, and their daughters, Julie Richell and Sarah Bateman, and her husband James; and his great-nephew, Brian Scott Bateman.

Ray is also survived by his many friends, especially Paul and Jane Steele.

The family will greet relatives and friends during calling hours on Thursday, Feb. 3, from 5-7 p.m. at Sanderson Funeral Home, 117 S. Main St., Middlebury.
A Mass of Christian Burial will celebrated by Father Justin Baker on Friday, Feb. 4, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary's Church in Middlebury. Burial will follow in Resurrection Park in South Burlington.

Elizabeth Loraine Davis

Benson -- Elizabeth Loraine Davis, 78, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, at Rutland Medical Center.

She was born Sept. 11, 1926, in Crown Point, N.Y., the daughter of Oscar and Elizabeth (Treadway) Taylor.

She is survived by her husband, Warren E. Davis Sr. of Benson; three children, Wayne Davis of Forest Dale, Patricia Davis of Poultney and Warren E. Davis Jr. of Benson; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter, Elizabeth Betts.
A private funeral services will take place at a later date.
