Mildred E. Goodrich

SALISBURY — Mildred E. Goodrich, 78, died Sunday morning, April 5, 2009, at her residence surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Sept. 19, 1930, in Chittenden, the daughter of Louis Sr. and Alice (Lathrop) Phelps.

She married Donald “Chief” Goodrich Sept. 3, 1949, in Chittenden. Together they ran the Goodrich Farm in Salisbury.

She was a member of the Salisbury Congregational Church. Her family says she loved crafting, quilting, gardening and spending time with her family. She also had a love of animals, especially her cats.

She is survived by her husband; her son, Ernie Goodrich and his wife Leeann of Salisbury; her three daughters, Donna Lawton and her husband Henry of Bridport, Debbie Smith and her husband Gary of Salisbury and Penny Supernaw and her husband Scott of Salisbury; two brothers, Louis Phelps Jr. and his wife Marne of Pittsford and Charles Phelps Sr. of Springfield; two sisters, Alice Durovich of Springfield and Faith Pratt and her husband Harley of Proctor; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a brother, John Phelps; a sister, Mary Loomis; and a half-sister, Bertha Clarke.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, April 8, at the Salisbury Congregational Church. The Rev. John Grivetti, pastor, officiated. Burial followed in West Side cemetery in Salisbury.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Salisbury Congregational Church, Main Street, Salisbury, VT 05769, or to Addison County Home Health & Hospice, P.O. Box 754 Middlebury, VT 05753.

Ethel Pearl Cram

MIDDLEBURY — Ethel Pearl Cram, 84, died Monday, April 6, 2009, at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury.

She was born Sept. 28, 1924, in Lincoln, the daughter of John and Estella Cram Cobb.

In September of 1939 she married Carl S. Cram. He predeceased her August 23, 1980, after 41 years of marriage.

Family says her interests and hobbies included word-find puzzles, fishing, listening to country and gospel music, square dancing, spending time next to river in Lincoln, flower gardening, plants and spending time with her family. She used to say one of her fondest memories was of listening to her father, brothers and some neighbors get together on a Saturday night to play fiddles, guitars and other instruments. She also used to talk about how, as a child, she would work with her father haying and cutting wood.

She is survived by seven children, Joanne, Carl (Sonny), Stella, Allen, Lola, Leatrice and Richard; a sister, Irene Michaud of Lincoln; 23 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held Friday, April 10, at 10 a.m. at the Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol. Interment will follow in Maple cemetery in Lincoln. Friends may call at Brown-McClay Funeral Home on Thursday, April 9, from 5 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Helen Porter Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center, 30 Porter Drive, Middlebury, VT 05753.

Lois May Bassett

BRANDON, Vt./BREVARD, N.C. — Lois May Bassett, 79, died Friday, April 3, 2009, at the Brian Center in Brevard, N.C.

She was born in Rutland on Aug. 29, 1929, the daughter of Otis and Lovinna (Baker) Bishop.

She was a graduate of Brandon High School, class of 1947. She attended nursing school in Connecticut and worked as a nurse’s aide doing private duty for many years in Proctor and Brandon. She also worked as a waitress at various area restaurants while caring for her ailing mother. She was a volunteer with the Foster Grandparent Program in Rutland when she lived at Sheldon Towers. She was a deaconess at the Rutland Alliance Church. She lived in Underhill before moving to Easley, S.C., in 2003, to be near her family.

She is survived by a son, Leigh E. Pfenning of Greenville, S.C.; a daughter, Sharon A. Rouse of Littleton, N.H.; a sister Mary Hallett of Forest Dale; 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousin.

She was predeceased by a sister, Phyllis LaRock, in 1973; and a son, Bruce A. Pfenning, in 1980.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 9, at 2 p.m. at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon. Her son, the Rev. Leigh E. Pfenning, will officiate. A graveside committal service and burial will follow in the family lot at Pine Hill cemetery in Brandon.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, April 9, from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made, in her memory, to the Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 1139, Montpelier, VT 05601.

Helene Kolbus

WATERMILL, N.Y. — Helene V. Kolbus of Watermill, N.Y., sister of Julie S. Keeler of Middlebury, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, after a brief illness.

Services were held Jan. 29 at Our Lady of Poland Church in South Hampton, N.Y.

Interment will be at St. Mary’s cemetery in Jewett City, Conn., at a later date.

Sonny Cyr

MIDDLEBURY — Sonny Cyr of Middlebury died peacefully at Birchwood Terrace Jan. 27, 2010.

Services will be held Saturday Feb. 6, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Middlebury. Interment will follow at St. Peter’s cemetery in Vergennes.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be sent to the Middlebury Fire Department, 5 Seymour St., Middlebury, VT 05753.

Sonny was born in Weybridge on March 25, 1942, son of Leonard P. and Doris L. Cyr.

He enjoyed being in the woods, hunting and fishing.

Mary Butterfield

MIDDLEBURY — Mary C. Butterfield, 84, of Middlebury died Thursday morning, Jan. 28, 2010, at Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.

A memorial service will be held in the spring at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 326 College St., Middlebury, VT 05753.

She was born Nov. 30, 1925, in Newark, N.J., the daughter of the late George and Emma (Perkins) Coursey.

Evelyn K. Rongo

BRANDON — Evelyn K. Rongo, 82, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009, at her home in Brandon.

She was born in New Brunswick, N.J., on Feb. 17, 1926. She was the daughter of Theodore and Barbara (Yaniszyn) Koladije. She received her education in local New Brunswick schools. She was a resident of Brandon since 1975. She worked at Central Vermont Public Service for several years before retiring. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, knitting and needlepoint.

She is survived by her son, Jonathan T. Grasz of Cohasset, Mass.; her stepson, Brian E. Rongo of Morris Plains, N.J.; her stepdaughter, Judy Schulz of Concord, Calif.; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Rongo, in 2005; a son, Christopher P. Grasz; two sisters, Dorothy Fondak and Ann Sirianni; and a brother, Daniel Koladije.

The graveside committal service and burial will take place, at a later date, in the Vermont Veterans Memorial cemetery in Randolph. There are no public calling hours.

Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made in her memory to the Brandon Area Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 232, Brandon, VT 05733.

Helen Marian (Barnum) Kendall

GRANVILLE, N.Y. — Helen Marian (Barnum) Kendall, 96, a native of Monkton, died Jan. 31, 2009, at Orchard Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Granville, N.Y.

She was born June 20, 1912, in Monkton, the daughter of Urana and Harry Barnum. In 1931, she was married to Frederick Smith, who died in 1936. In 1937, she married Vernon Kendall.

For many years she was the baker at Cole’s Restaurant and later at the Sugar House Restaurant in New Haven.

Family says she loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed getting together with them and talking with them whenever she could. She enjoyed making jewelry and working with shells at Orchard Nursing Home, where she lived.

She is survived by a daughter, Mary L. Baker and husband Douglas of Granville; three sons, Frederick B. Smith and wife Elizabeth of Westford, James A. Kendall and wife Donna of New Haven, and Roger V. Kendall and wife Emily of Westford; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; many nieces and nephews; and a close friend, Gerry Moore, at Orchard Nursing Home.

She was predeceased by her first husband in 1936; her second husband in 1995; a daughter, Barbara Ann Smith, in 1946; and a grandchild in 1966.

A committal service will be held in May at the Evergreen cemetery in Bristol, where she will be buried next to her late husband Vernon.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Ladies Union of the New Haven Congregational Church, New Haven, VT 05472.

Suzanne B. Houle

RUTLAND — Suzanne B. Houle, 59, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009, at The Pines of Rutland.

She was born in Granby, Quebec, Canada, on May 5, 1949, the daughter of John and Helen (Therrien) Houle. She came to Pittsford with her family in 1954. She received her education in local Pittsford schools, and attended Rutland High School. She was a resident of Rutland for more than 35 years.

In earlier years she did domestic work for various area families. She attended St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Family says she enjoyed crocheting and knitting. She was an avid doll collector and loved music and dancing and cooking for the holidays.

She is survived by her fiancé and lifetime companion, Leo Bathalon of Rutland, with whom she shared her home; three sisters, Lucie Houle of Orwell, Christine Cheney of Rutland and Joanne Ladner of Colorado; four brothers, Donald Houle of Brandon, Christian Houle of Kansas City, Mo., John Houle of Salisbury and Paul Houle of Leicester; several aunts and uncles; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her father in 1993 and her mother in 2003.

A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family. The Rev. Albert “Skip” Baltz, pastor of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, will officiate. A private graveside committal service and burial will take place, at a later date, in St. Mary’s cemetery in Brandon.

Dorothy Loomis “Dot” Gilman

VERGENNES — Dorothy Loomis “Dot” Gilman, 91, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2009, at her home in Vergennes.

She was born Dec. 14, 1917, in Braintree, the daughter of Carl C. and Louise (Perham) Bass.

Dorothy attended Peth and Randolph schools and graduated from Randolph High School. She was raised in Braintree and lived in Philadelphia, Penn., for 10 years before returning to the Randolph area in 1952. She worked as a bookkeeper at Van Raalte in Randolph for many years.

She was married to Frank B. Gilman Aug. 20, 1960, in Randolph. They wintered in St. Petersburg, Fla., for about 30 years. She enjoyed reading, gardening, knitting, crocheting and quilting. Her memberships included the Randolph Baptist Fellowship, the Peth Community Club and the Randolph Grange No. 229.

She is survived by her sister, Margaret LaBerge of Braintree, and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Frank in 1989; a brother, Edmund Bass; and three sisters, Rebecca Small, Edith Jennie LaBerge and Harriet Bass.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 13, at 11:00 a.m. at the Randolph Baptist Fellowship with Pastor George Sweet officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Fairview cemetery in Bethel. Calling hours will be Thursday, Feb. 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.

Evelyn M. (Dashner) Dike

BRISTOL — Evelyn M. (Dashner) Dike, 87, died Feb. 6, 2009, at her home in Bristol.

She was born Aug. 23, 1921, in Post Mills, the daughter of Manley and Maude (Douglas) Carpenter. After her mother’s death, she was adopted by Alfred and Lena Dashner.

She attended elementary school in her hometown of Washington and high school at Spaulding High School in Barre. She then attended Normal School in Johnson, where she earned her teaching degree. She started teaching in a one-room school in South Washington. Later she taught in Bristol and Middlebury.

She married Kenneth Dike in June 1945.

In addition to 41 years of teaching full time and 10 years of substituting after that, she was active in many civic and social organizations. She served 28 years on the Mount Abraham Union High School board, was a library trustee in Bristol and was a member of the Bristol Historical Society.

She is survived by her five children and their spouses, Lloyd Dike and wife Lynn of Bristol, Rebecca Johnson and husband M. Charles of Shreveport, La., Robert Dike of San Jose, Calif., Jay Dike and wife LeeAnn of Oakley, Calif., and Geoffrey Dike and wife Lisa of Essex Junction; 11 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; a great-grandson; six step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Kenneth in 1984.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 10, at Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol. Interment was private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Addison County Home Health & Hospice, P.O. Box 754, Middlebury, VT 05753.
