John Stephen Kane

MESA, Ariz. — John Stephen Kane, 53, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Brandon, died Dec. 30, 2008, in Tucson, Ariz.

He was born Nov. 20, 1955, in Woodstock, the son of Edward E. and Marion J. (Sarner) Kane.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and enjoyed playing the guitar. He played in a number of music groups in the Brandon area.

Survivors include three children, Heather Carragher of Massachusetts and Melissa Kane and Andreas Utzelmann, both of Germany; two sisters, Susan Stanescki and husband John of Chicago, Ill., and Nancy Smith and husband Al of Harvard, Ill.; a sister-in-law, Karen Kane of Brandon, Vermont; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Thomas and Patrick Kane.

A memorial service will be held in Harvard, Ill., Saturday, Feb. 14, with burial following at the Mount Auburn cemetery in Harvard. There will also be a memorial service in Brandon, Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 3 p.m. at the Brandon Methodist Church.

Rhoda Elizabeth Haskell

FOREST DALE — Rhoda Elizabeth Haskell, 97, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, at Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury.

She was born in Brandon on Feb. 24, 1911. She was the daughter of Daniel and Martha (Farr) Parmelee. She received her early education in local Brandon schools and graduated from Brandon High School in 1929. She attended Albany Business College and graduated in 1930. Following graduation she worked as a secretary in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. She later worked as a secretary at the Brandon Training School, where she became a bookkeeper and office manager.

She married William Haskell in Schuylerville, N.Y., on Aug. 16, 1936. They made their home in Brandon until moving to Bennington in 1942. They owned and operated the Bennington Farm Equipment Company from 1952 until their retirement in 1975. In 1977 they moved back to Forest Dale to be near their son and his family. Family says she enjoyed her home and family and was a quiet lady and loving wife and mother.

She is survived by a son, Henry W. Haskell and his wife Brenda of Salisbury, and a granddaughter.

She was predeceased by her husband in 2001; a sister, Alice Rolfe; and three brothers, Charles Parmelee, Leland Parmelee and Gale Parmelee Sr.

A funeral service will be held Friday, Feb. 6, at 10 a.m. at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon. The Rev. Timothy Taylor, pastor of Victory Baptist Church in Vergennes, will officiate. The graveside committal service and burial will take place at a later date in the family lot at Pine Hill cemetery in Brandon.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, Feb. 5, from 4 to 7 p.m.

Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made in her memory to the Rutland County Humane Society, 765 Stevens Rd., Pittsford, VT 05763.

Elizabeth Lyon “Libby” O’Neal

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Elizabeth Lyon “Libby” O’Neal, 47, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009 at Southwest Florida Regional Medical Center in Fort Myers, Fla. She died peacefully in her sleep after a battle with cancer.

She was born Feb. 27, 1961, in Middlebury, the daughter of Denton L. and Ann B. Lyon.

She graduated from Middlebury Union High School and went on to attend Champlain College in Burlington, receiving an associate’s degree in hotel/motel/restaurant management in 1983. Soon thereafter she moved to Florida to pursue a career as a restaurant and catering manager. Her assignments moved her to various Florida cities before she finally settled in Fort Myers. There she met David L. O’Neal, whom she married on Oct. 14, 1995.

She became a gourmet as a result of her work in the restaurant and food service industry, and friends and family say she was always preparing special appetizers and meals for friends and family, who greatly enjoyed her epicurean talents.

In addition to fine foods, her interests included animal welfare, and she and her husband owned and adopted numerous horses, cats and dogs at their country home. She participated in Horses for the Handicapped, and a favorite pastime was horseback riding on the trails through the fields and forests surrounding her property.

Libby is survived by her husband, David; two brothers, Blair Lyon of Vancouver, Wash., and Matthew Lyon of Charlotte, N.C.; brothers-in-law James O’Neal and wife Pat of Bluefield, W.Va., and Robert O’Neal and wife Becky of Richmond, Va.; and sisters-in-law Robin Peoples and husband Chris of Charlotte, N.C., Carolyn Wiemer and husband Jon of Denver, Colo., and Kimberly Midkiff and husband Jerry of Springfield, Va.

A memorial service was held at Friday, Jan. 30, in Fort Myers. A celebration of life at the O’Neal residence followed.

Memorial donations may be made to the Gulf Coast Humane Society, 2010 Arcadia Street, Fort Myers, FL 33916.

Donna Marie (Lee) Tanner

EDEN — Donna Marie (Lee) Tanner, 56, of Eden, died Jan. 21, 2009, at Fletcher Allen Healthcare in Burlington after a long battle with diabetes.

She was born Aug. 10, 1952, in Middlebury, the foster daughter of Norman and Mary Rose Audet of Bridport.

She graduated from Middlebury Union High School in 1971 and Vermont College of Cosmetology in May of 1981.

She married Sanford Tanner on Aug. 22, 1981. She operated Donna T’s Hilltop Salon in Eden for many years and was always very involved in local church and community activities. She was also an active member with her husband in the Lamoille County Cruisers antique car and truck club.

She is survived by her husband, Sanford Tanner of Eden; four children, William Cross of Eden, Tina Hubble of Johnson, Darcie Fowler of Hartsville, S.C., and David Tanner of Cabot; a sister, Penny Frye of Crossville, Tenn.; a sister-in-law, Sandra Camley of Morrisville; seven grandchildren; and foster siblings Elaine, Emmy, Eugene, Earl and Ernie.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, Jan. 27, at the White-Fiess Funeral Home in Morrisville.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation, VT-Affiliate, 1 Kennedy Drive, Suite L8, South Burlington, VT 05446.

Kathleen A. Melendy

HUNTINGTON — Kathleen A. Melendy, 42, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at her home in Huntington.

She was born July 29, 1966, in Proctor, the daughter of the late David Foley Sr. and Kathleen Dezero Foley.

She was a former member of Huntington Fire Department. She enjoyed cooking, helping others, being a mother and raising her children, camping. Family says she was a bighearted person who enjoyed her life.

Kathleen is survived by her husband Matt; three children, Patrick, Ashlei and Matthew; her mother Kathleen Dezero of Pittsford; two sisters, Corinne Squier of Chickopee, Mass., and Colleen Gilman of Wallingford; two brothers, David Foley Jr. and Robert Foley of Pittsford; Marylin and Irving Melendy of South Starksboro; several nieces, nephews, in-laws and other close family.

A memorial service was held Jan. 28 at Huntington Baptist Church. Interment will be in St. Alphonsus cemetery in Pittsford in the spring.

Jane F. Maloney

VERGENNES — Jane F. Maloney, 60, died Jan. 23, 2009, in Vergennes.

She was born Jan. 25, 1948, in Burlington, the daughter of John and Marjorie Beach Maloney.

She graduated from Vergennes Union High School in 1966 and the College of William & Mary in 1970. In 1972, she earned a master’s degree in library science from the State University of New York at Albany.

In 1985, she married Tom Gamble.

She is survived by her sister, Mary Maloney; a brother-in-law, John Ferriss; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband Tom.

In 1972, she began a job as a librarian at the University of Seattle. Three years later she came home to Vergennes to help manage the Basin Harbor Club, where she remained until she was forced to retire due to multiple sclerosis.

Family and friends say she was brilliant, funny and charming and maintained her sense of humor despite the ravages of her disease. She asked that it be said that she died of that “horrible, nasty disease,” multiple sclerosis. Her courage and resourcefulness were an inspiration.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 31, at 2 p.m. at the Vergennes Congregational Church. Calling hours will be held at the Maloney home (4634 Basin Harbor Road) Friday, Jan. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Bixby Library, the Vergennes Congregational Church or the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad.

H. Joyce Bursey

MONKTON — H. Joyce Bursey, 97, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, at her home in Monkton.

She was born April 25, 1911, in English Harbour, Newfoundland, Canada, the daughter of Gilbert and Elizabeth Ann (Batson) Bugden.

She married the Rev. Jonathan Bursey, who predeceased her March 18, 1999.

She taught at several schools in Newfoundland and in Vermont in Brownsville and Monkton. She was an organist at her husband’s parishes in Brownsville, Bradford and Bristol. She formed and conducted the boys’ choir and senior choir in the Bristol Federated Church.

She is survived by three children: Basil W. Bursey and David Bursey of Monkton, and Barry Bursey and wife Dora of Tucson, Ariz.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 29, at Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol. Interment will be in Greenwood cemetery in Bristol. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Addison County Home Health & Hospice, P.O. Box 754, Middlebury, VT 05753.

Harold M. Moore

WEYBRIDGE — Harold M. Moore, 83, a lifelong resident of the Middlebury-Weybridge area, died Thursday, March 26, 2009, at Vergennes Residential Care Home following a long illness.

Born in Middlebury Aug. 29, 1925, he was the son of Harold G. and Gertrude (Scott) Moore. He was a graduate of Middlebury High School and worked as a cloth cutter for Van Raalte for 25 years and in the plate room at Standard Register for 17 years.

He is survived by his wife June K. (James) Moore of Weybridge, whom he married in 1946; two daughters, Kathy M. Lucia and her husband Larry of Middlebury, and Karen L. Levarn and her husband Charlie of Lincoln; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

There will be a private family gathering.

Raymond O. Derrick

ADDISON — Raymond O. Derrick, 75, died Monday, March 23, 2009, at his home in Addison.

He was born Feb. 14, 1934, in Addison, the son of Sanford and Audna (Crowningshield) Derrick.

He was employed at Waitsfield Champlain Valley Telecom as a lineman foreman and retired in 2000.

He is survived by his wife Patricia (O’Byrne) Derrick of Addison; a son, Terrance W. Derrick of Middlebury; a sister, Helen Derrick Quaglino and husband Phil of Florida; two brothers, Richard Derrick of Kentucky and Ancil Derrick of Vergennes; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held March 27 at Grandview cemetery in Addison. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Addison County Humane Society, 236 Boardman Street, Middlebury, VT 05753, or Vergennes Area Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 11, Vergennes, VT 05491.

Harriet J. Bushey

VERGENNES — Harriet J. Bushey, 80, died peacefully surrounded by her family Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at Fletcher Allen Healthcare in Burlington.

She was born Dec. 17, 1928, in Ferrisburgh, the daughter of Robert and Rachel (Jerome) Brooks. After the death of her father she was raised by her mother and her stepfather, Russel Barrows.

She married Hosea H. Bushey on Aug. 25, 1946, and he predeceased her Feb. 13, 2004.

Harriet is survived by seven children, Bob and Joan Bushey of Vergennes, Patty and Mike Ryan of Wolcott, Jim Bushey of Vergennes, Nancy Henderson and the late Ed Henderson of Addison, Jeff and Karen Bushey of Forestdale, Tina Bushey of Forestdale and Sue and Jim Laflam of Addison; 11 grandchildren, Jessica Henderson, Beth and her husband Jesse Jackman, Tyler and Kate Ryan, Noah and his wife Laura Bushey, Wyeth Bushey, Sara, Josh and Alec Gerstenberger, Sean and his wife Ashley Laflam and Ben Laflam; four step-grandchildren, Cristine and Heather Middlebrook and Carrie and Thomas Bernier; four great-grandchildren, Rachel Chapman and Josie, Emma, and Natalie Jackman; four step-great-grandchildren, Cameren, Lauran and Kateland Bernier and Jeric Middlebrook; two brothers, Bill Barrows and his wife Linda of Florida and Melvin Barrows of Grand Isle; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by five brothers, John, David, Phelps, Clarence and Lloyal Brooks; and three sisters, Millie Menard, Mae Barry and Patricia Thorpe.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 30, at Vergennes Congregational Church. Interment will be in Prospect cemetery in Vergennes. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Vergennes Area Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 11, Vergennes, VT 05491.

Barbara Ann Armstrong

MINEVILLE — Barbara Ann Armstrong, 42, died March 18, 2009, surrounded by family and friends, after a long battle with brain cancer.

She was born July 19, 1966, in Ticonderoga, N.Y., to Earl and Lucille Sprague of Port Henry, N.Y.

She was employed at the Hometown Pharmacy in Mineville for several years with longtime friends and employers Robert and Carol Corbo and close friend Diana House.

Her family says she was a very strong person throughout her life, taking care of her four kids and always working several jobs. She also donated time to the Moriah Fire Department Auxiliary and was associated with Whitetails. They say if you couldn’t find Barb in town, she was probably in Keene Valley hiking mountains. Her passions were hiking, walking, running and spending quality time with her kids and her dog, Jake.

She is survived by longtime companion Jim Michener of Moriah, N.Y.; two daughters from her first marriage to Joseph Tefoe, Ashley Tefoe and Sue Tefoe and her fiancé, Charles Farnsworth, and their son; two sons from her second marriage to Jack Armstrong, Timothy and Caleb Armstrong; six sisters, Linda Fleming and husband Gary of Moriah, N.Y., Evelyn Celotti and husband Joseph of Port Henry, N.Y., Helen Sprague and Chuck Robinson of Crown Point, N.Y., Lisa Sprague and lifelong partner Jay Hamel of Addison, Stacey and husband Jim Drake of Port Henry, N.Y., and Frances and husband Tim Malaney of Ticonderoga, N.Y.; two brothers, James and lifelong partner Pauline Burgey of Moriah, N.Y., and John and wife Crystal Sprague of Port Henry, N.Y.; several nieces and nephews; and many other family members.

She was predeceased by a sister, Deborah Sprague; a brother, Joseph Sprague; and her father, James Earl Sprague Jr.

A memorial Mass was held March 23 at St. Patrick’s Church.
