Leonard E. “Sonny” Stearns

FERRISBURGH — Leonard E. “Sonny” Stearns, 67, died at home during the early morning hours of Jan. 21, 2009, following a long period of declining health. He was surrounded by his wife and family.

He was born in Charlotte on May 18, 1941, the son of Elwin and Lucy Ryder Stearns.

Raised on the south side of Mount Philo, on a prosperous dairy farm, he graduated from Vergennes Union High School in 1959. A friendly man, he was known as “Sonny” his whole lifetime. Always a businessman and farmer, he dealt in farms large and small, cattle, machinery and real estate. An auction fan, he was known throughout the area as a man whose word was his bond, and whose handshake was as binding as the best legal contract. A keen mind, his CB handle was “Calculator.” To those that who knew him, he could be depended upon to extend a helping hand without being asked.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Kathleen McNulla Stearns; a daughter, Deborah, two sons, Rick and Robert and wife Michelle; two brothers, Charles and Rodney and wife Donna; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 24, at Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Addison County Home Health & Hospice, P.O. Box 754, Middlebury, VT 05753, or Bixby Memorial Library, Attn. Rachael Plant, 258 Main Street, Vergennes, VT 05491.

Mary Miller Maheu

FORESTDALE — Mary Miller Maheu, 93, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009, at Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury.

She was born in DekelaSelo, Yugoslavia, on March 27, 1915, the daughter of Peter and Maria (Gratisz) Miller. She immigrated to America with her family in 1921, coming through Ellis Island. The family moved to Michigan.

She came to Brandon with her husband in the early 1960s. Together they owned and operated Brandon Electronics on Center Street in Brandon for many years. Family says she was an avid reader, enjoyed word games and scrabble and loved her flower gardens.

She is survived by a son, Thomas Maheu of Meridian, Miss.; a daughter, Jo-Ann Cobb of Brandon; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and numerous care providers.

She was predeceased by her husband, Howard Maheu.

A private graveside committal service and burial will take place, at a later date, in the Vermont Veterans Memorial cemetery in Randolph.

Sherrie Mary Danylieko

ORWELL — Sherrie Mary Danylieko, 34, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, at her home in Orwell.

She was born in Danbury, Conn., on Feb. 16, 1974, the daughter of Henry and Claire (Rose) Albis. She was graduated from Hudson (N.Y.) High School in 1992.

She had been a resident of Orwell since 2004, having moved here from Adams, Mass. While in Adams, she worked as a nurse’s aide at various area nursing homes. She worked with the visiting nurses in North Adams, Mass., from 1999 until 2001. After moving to Vermont she worked at Stonewood Farms in Orwell. She later began a job for Aris Home Health out of White River Junction as a home health-care worker.

She is survived by her husband, Wilfred Danylieko III of Orwell; a son, Daniel Ridley of Pittsfield, Mass.; three daughters, Latasha Ridley of Pittsfield, Mass., and Wendeline Danylieko and Gina Danylieko, both of Orwell; a brother, Francis Albis of Pittsfield, Mass.; her father, Henry Albis of Danbury, Conn.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her mother, Claire Robinson.

A funeral service was held Monday, Jan. 26, at 11 a.m. at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon. A private burial will take place at a later date.

Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made in her memory to the Orwell First Response Squad, Orwell, VT 05760.

Herbert Edwin Clark Jr.

SUDBURY — Herbert Edwin Clark Jr., 71, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, at his home in Sudbury.

He was born in Brandon on Jan. 11, 1938, the son of Herbert and Ethel (Palmer) Clark Sr. He received his early education in Sudbury schools and attended Brandon High School.

In earlier years he worked on the family farm. From 1957 until 1963 he served in the U.S. Army Reserve. He later worked at Dutton’s Sawmill in Brandon and later at Vermont Marble Company’s West Rutland Quarry. He was also a woodsman, cutting cedar posts and logging. He opened Clark’s Sawmill in Brandon in 1972. He continued dairy farming as well, and just recently retired to due illness. He was a past member of St. Paul’s Masonic Lodge No. 25 in Brandon.

He is survived by his wife and companion Ruthie Nichols of Sudbury; two sons, Greg Clark and Scott Clark, both of Brandon; a daughter, Judy Pomainville of Pittsford; two brothers, Robert Clark of Bridport and Gilbert Clark of Proctor; two sisters, Rebecca Adams of Brandon and Eva Torres of Puerto Rico; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brandon. The Rev. Albert “Skip” Baltz will be the celebrant. A private burial, with military honors, will take place at a later date in Pine Hill cemetery.

Friends may call at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon on Monday, Jan. 26, from 4-7 p.m.

Jeanette Denis Vernon

NORMAN, Okla. — Jeanette Denis Vernon, 77, died Tuesday, March 17, 2009, in Norman, Okla.

She was born in Sudbury, Vt., on March 6, 1932, the daughter of Alphonse and Albertha (Racine) Denis. She received her early education in local Sudbury schools and graduated from Brandon High School, class of 1949.

She received her teaching degree from Castleton College, class of 1953. Her first teaching assignment was at the Whiting Elementary School. She later moved to Burlington where she taught for several years.

She later moved to Virginia, where she taught the children of the active duty military personnel at Quantico Marine Base. She continued her teaching career in Okinawa, Japan, where she also taught for military personnel. She returned to Virginia and worked as an office manager at the Pentagon until her retirement in the 1990s. Following retirement, she and her husband moved to Norman, Okla.

She is survived by her husband James Vernon of Norman, whom she married in Georgia in 1985; three stepsons, Mark Vernon of Georgia, Dr. Handy Vernon of Tennessee and Charles Vernon of Romania; a sister, Marjorie Wilcox of Kessee Mills, Mo.; two brothers, Larry Denis of Whiting and Raymond Denis of Benson. Several grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive her.

The funeral service and burial will take place, in Norman, Okla.

William Frederick James “Rick” or “Bill” Snyder

LEICESTER — William Frederick James “Rick” or “Bill” Snyder, 64, died Thursday, March 19, 2009, at his home on Lake Dunmore.

He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Dec. 1, 1944, the son of Herbert and Hermina (Dick) Snyder. He graduated from Ithaca High School, class of 1962. He received a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from Cornell University, class of 1968.

In his early career he worked for Boeing in Huntsville, Ala. He later joined Computer Sciences Corporation in Paramus, N.J., and moved on to Composition Systems Inc. of Elmsford, N.Y. For the past 25 years he was a self-employed computer software engineer with Toys “R” Us as his primary client.

He and his wife retired to Lake Dunmore in 2007, where his family had summered since 1918. For 33 years prior to his retirement, he resided in Mahwah, N.J. According to his family, he was an avid Cornell University athletics fan who also loved swimming and sailing on Lake Dunmore. He served on the board of directors for the Lake Dunmore/Fern Lake Association.

He is survived by his wife, Diane, whom he married in Brandon on June 25, 1972; three daughters, Carrie Snyder of New York City, Robin Vlamis and her husband Giorgios of Morristown, N.J., and Margaret Sparrow and her husband Geoffrey of Raymond, Maine; a sister, Judith Lodder of Trumansburg, N.Y.; a brother, Randall Snyder of Hillsboro, N.H.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.

He was predeceased by his siblings Jane Baumgartner, Sara Ostergren and Herbert Snyder.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, March 28, at 1 p.m. at the Leicester Meeting House on Route 7 in Leicester. Following the service there will be a reception for friends and relatives at the family home on Lake Dunmore.

John Martin Thomas Gale

POTTSTOWN, Penn./MIDDLE-BURY — John Martin Thomas Gale, 89, died quietly in his sleep March 23, 2009, at the Manatawny Manor Senior Living Community in Pottstown, Penn.

He was born in Youngstown, Ohio, on Sept. 27, 1919, the eldest son of Lloyd Blanchard Gale and Huldah May Thomas. He was the grandson of John Martin Thomas, president of Middlebury College from 1908 to 1921.

He briefly attended Middlebury College before leaving to serve in the U.S. Air Force in Africa for three years during World War II. He completed his degree in business administration and human relations from Cornell University, class of 1949, and was employed for most of his career with Scott Paper Company in the personnel department at company facilities in Wisconsin, Maine and Pennsylvania.

His family says he had a profound love of music, playing trombone in various dance bands in his early life. He was an avid golfer and gardener, and especially enjoyed the family’s annual vacation at the Delaware shore, a tradition his family continues to this day.

He was active in numerous volunteer and church organizations, including Kiwanis Club and the Aldersgate United Methodist choir in Wilmington, Del. He retired from Scott Paper to Middlebury, where he remained active as a volunteer at the Ilsley Library and Porter Hospital and with the choir and various committees at the Middlebury Congregational Church.

He is survived by his brothers, Presson Richardson “Dick” Gale and wife Joan of Trenton, N.J., and David Gale of Rutland; his children, Thomas and wife Nancy of Somerset, N.J., David of Wilmington, Del., Kenneth and wife Gail of Pottstown, Penn., Donald and wife Gabrielle of Gothenburg, Sweden, Elizabeth Kosinski and husband Jeffrey of Hockessin, Del., and Susan of Wilmington, Del.; and eight grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife of over 50 years, Elizabeth “Betty” Van Nest Gale.

Plans are being made for a memorial service and private interment service in Middlebury.

Wendell C. “Bud” Wimett

MIDDLEBURY — Wendell C. “Bud” Wimett, 71, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, in his home, surrounded by his loving family and friends.

He was born Nov. 15, 1937, in Salisbury, the son of Forrest and Helen (Whitney) Wimett. He graduated from Middlebury High School in 1955. Following three years of honorable service in the U.S. Navy, he attended Bentley College in Boston, Mass. He worked at Betourney’s Market in East Middlebury prior to starting a career at Polymers Plastics and later moving to Simmonds Precision, retiring in 2002.

He was a charter member of the Bristol Rescue Squad. An avid sports enthusiast, he played and umpired in numerous softball leagues in Bristol, Middlebury and Vergennes. Family says he was a caring and giving soul, spending countless hours visiting and sharing his many stories with friends, relatives and acquaintances in need, at local hospitals and nursing homes. They will long remember his selfless ability to sooth the suffering and lift the spirits of the many people he touched.

He is survived by two sons, David Wimett and his wife Beth of Brandon and Brian Wimett and his fiancée Jamee Thompson of Pensacola, Fla.; two daughters, Wendy Andrews and her husband Mike of Rochester and Stacey Fillion and her husband Steven of West Addison; two sisters, Beverly McCoy and her husband Billy of Bennington and Ann Pomainville of Middlebury; a brother, John Wimett and his wife Diane of Lewis, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his dearest friends, William Newton and Carolyn Pallescki of Salisbury and Jeanne Craig-Horsfield of Pennsylvania.

Funeral services were held on Jan. 21 at the Brandon Congregational Church. A private graveside committal service and burial with military honors will take place at a later date in Holman cemetery in Salisbury.

In lieu of flowers his family requests that a donation of time to a friend or neighbor in need be performed to honor his legacy. The family would like to thank Dr. William Porter for his care and support.

John VanderTuin

MIDDLEBURY — John VanderTuin, 89, of Middlebury, died peacefully at home on Jan. 18, 2009.

He is survived by his wife Claire of Middlebury; three daughters, Bonnie Fairbanks and husband Bob of Worcester, Barbara Stahle and husband Ron of Brandon, and Sara Davis and husband Terry of Reno, Nev.; two sons, Peter VanderTuin and partner Martha Straus of Brattleboro and Jan VanderTuin of Eugene, Ore.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

A family celebration of John’s life will be held at a later date.

Rudolph “Rudy” Rotax

MONKTON — Rudolph “Rudy” Rotax, 89, of Monkton, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009.

He was born Feb. 9, 1919, in Monkton, the son of Frederick and Bessie (Stillson) Rotax.

He is survived by a son, Frederick Rotax of Monkton; two daughters, Marian and LuAnne of Monkton; two brothers, Paul Rotax of Lincoln and Wilhelm Rotax of New Haven; two grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Kit Quada.

In accord with his wishes, there will be no funeral services.

Donald Neil Rideout

BRANDON — Donald Neil Rideout passed away at Haven Healthcare in Rutland Jan. 16, 2009.

He was born July 3, 1932, in Portland, Maine, the only child of Donald and Doris (McPhee) Rideout. He was predeceased by an infant son, Brett Hanson Rideout in 1960, his first wife Faith Rideout in 1979, his father Don in 1981, his mother Doris in 2006 and his beloved childhood dog, Taps.

He is survived by his son Scott and wife Laura and his daughter Beth and husband Bernie, all of Brandon; son Todd and wife Suzanne of Sanford, Maine; granddaughter Caitlin Carr and her partner Maria Luisa Verduzco of Ciudad Constitucion, Baja California, Mexico; grandsons William Rideout and Benjamin Rideout of Sanford; stepdaughter Heidi Johnson Hammel, her husband Dave and sons Zachary and Jake of Annapolis, Md.; stepson Eric Johnson and his companion Andriana Marino of San Francisco, Calif.; Joan Smith of Rockland, Maine; cousins Dave Dyer of Bradenton, Fla., and Phil Rackley of Lincoln, N.H.; and the two Gingers.

He attended schools in Portland, graduating from Deering High School in 1950. He went on to attend the University of Maine at Orono, graduating in 1954 with a bachelor of science degree in zoology. He married Faith Carol Hanson on June 18, 1955. He joined the U.S. Army and rose to the rank of captain, serving in Fort Benning, Ga., Bamburg, Germany, and Arlington, Mass., where he taught ROTC at Harvard University.

In 1965 he was honorably discharged from the Army and moved his family to Brandon, where he taught science at Otter Valley Union High School. While there, he coached soccer and cross-country skiing and founded the outing and ecology clubs. He married Joan Smith Johnson in 1978. In 1986 he took a leave of absence from Otter Valley to fulfill his lifelong dreams of traveling to Africa and joining the Peace Corps. He taught science in Gabon and Kenya, where he was affectionately known as Mwalimu (“teacher” in Swahili). He returned to teaching at Otter Valley in 1989, and continued until his retirement in 1996.

He led a varied and interesting life, from biking in Eastern Europe to fishing in Alaska with Scott and Laura, and teaching in Africa. He biked with Scott and Todd in Nova Scotia, took Caitlin on a five-week adventure in Kenya, camped with Will and Ben at Santa’s Village, hiked, skied, golfed and played racquetball with so many of his family and friends. He ran Y Country Camps in the summer with Joan, Todd, Heidi and Eric, and passed on his love of reading, cribbage, the Red Sox, biking, skiing and ice cream to all his kids and grandkids. Every visit at Haven Healthcare would include ice cream and malted milk balls, “smuggled” in by friends and family.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Brandon Congregational Church at 1 p.m. Deacon Gary Griffin will officiate.

A reception will be held at the Brandon Inn after the service.

Burial will be held at a later date at St. Mary’s cemetery in Brandon.

Lucienne Eva Maheu

MIDDLEBURY — Lucienne Eva Maheu, 97, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 20, 2009, at Helen Porter Health and Rehabilitation Center with her loving family by her side.

Born June 23, 1911, in Casselman, Ontario, Canada, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Delvina (Huneault) Quesnel. She moved to Vermont when she was 17 years old. She and her husband Ernest owned and operated the F.C. Dyer Co. Inc. general store in West Salisbury until 1962. She was a long-time member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Middlebury. Project Independence was a very important part of her life for the last two years. Her family says she loved and appreciated all the staff there.

An accomplished seamstress, she made all her own clothes as a young girl. For many years, she upholstered furniture and made beautiful slipcovers for many people in the area. Her talent was well known and clients came from many New England states as well as New York City. She loved quilting and was one of the quilters who worked on the Bicentennial quilt in 1991 which hangs in the Salisbury Town Hall. Family says she loved gardening and was especially fond and proud of her roses. She was a wonderful cook and always welcomed family and friends into her home.

She is survived by two daughters, Ann Dalton and husband John of Middlebury and Joan Johnson and husband Ronald of Trumbull, Conn.; two sons, Duane Maheu and wife Tana of Houlton, Maine, and Bruce of Salisbury; and a sister, Laurette Cooke of Crown Point, N.Y. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Ernest in 1989; two brothers, Aurele Quesnel and Alphonse Quesnel; and three sisters, Jeanne Charron, Simone Duclos and Yvette Paquette.

A memorial Mass to celebrate her life will be held on Friday, Jan. 23, at noon at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Middlebury with the Rev. William R. Beaudin as celebrant. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be at a later date in St. Mary’s cemetery in Middlebury at the convenience of the family.
