LAWRENCE FRANCIS ‘BABE’ SLOAN

FLETCHER - Funeral Services for Lawrence Francis “Babe” Sloan were held on Monday, Nov. 13, 2006, in the United Church of Fairfax with Reverend Elizabeth Griffin officiating.

Those in attendance included representatives from Fletcher Elementary School, BFA Fairfax School, Swanton Elementary School and Thatcher Brook School. Special musical selections presented by organist and soloist Mary Jo Gillilan included “Let There Be Peace On Earth,” “Life’s Railway To Heaven,” “Wind Beneath My Wings,” “Memories,” “Amazing Grace” and “In The Arms of the Angels.” Loving memories were shared with all attending by friends and family.

Full military honors were accorded the U.S. Army veteran by members of the Vermont Army Guard honors team. The United States flag was folded and presented to son J.R. Sloan following a rifle salute and taps. A full uniformed Honor Guard of the Green Mountain Post 1 American Legion stood at attention while the casket was transferred from the church to the hearse by pall bearers, J.R. Sloan, Jim Gebo, Kevin Kane, Troy Liberty, Paul Burleson and Chuck Rooney. After placing the casket in the hearse the bearers lovingly placed their white dress gloves and Red boutonniere roses on “Babes” casket. The hearse door was closed by son J.R. Sloan.

A reception followed in the church hall sponsored by the ladies of The United Church of Fairfax. Inurnment will be at a later date and at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements were by John D. Workman of the A.W. Rich Funeral Home, Fairfax Chapel, 1176 Main St., Fairfax.

FREDERICK LLOYD BLAIR

RICHFORD - Frederick Lloyd Blair, 77, passed away Wednesday morning, Nov. 15, 2006, in Richford at the home of his daughter with his loving family at his side.

He was born May 14, 1929, in St. Albans, the son of the late Lloyd and Lydia (Domina) Blair.

Fred was a life long resident of Richford and was a 1947 graduate of Richford High School. He also received an Associates degree in Sociology from St. Michael’s College in 1956. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran during the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion Post 12 of Richford. Following his honorable discharge from the Air Force he married the love of his life, Kathleen Walsh on June 14, 1952. She predeceased Fred on July 25, 1990. He was employed at the Missisquoi Pulp Mill for 30 plus years retiring in 1991. Fred was an avid reader and enjoyed fishing and hunting. He had a gift of gab and loved spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his daughters, Susan Blair of Colchester, Wendy Mitchell and her husband William of Hinesburg, Patty Blair of Baltimore, Md., and Judy Noyes and her husband Donald of Richford; a brother, Arthur Blair and his wife Thelma of Granby, Conn.; his grandchildren, Nickie Pouteaux, Lee Noyes, Maureen Mitchell, and Timothy Mitchell; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and his wife, Fred was predeceased by a brother, Robert Blair.

A graveside service will be held Saturday afternoon, Nov. 18, 2006, at 1 p.m. at All Saints cemetery in Richford with Rev. Frank Eksterowicz officiating. There will be no visiting hours.

For those who wish, contributions in Fred’s memory may be made to the Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.

Spears Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

HENRY FRANCIS LEMNAH

WILLISTON - Henry F. Lemnah, 74, died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2006, at his home after a battle with cancer surrounded by his family.

Henry was born to the late Cecil (Jette) and Henry Lemnah of Swanton on June 4, 1932.

He was a former employee of The St. Albans Messenger and then retired from IBM after 35 years. Henry was not one to let no grass grow under his feet. He took on a part time job at Aubuchon Hardware in Essex until several strokes ended his working days.

Henry was a member of the American Legion as well as the V.F.W. For multiple weeks he held the title of "King of the Hill" with his bowling league. He enjoyed taking drives, always had small projects going, as well as working on his vegetable garden and lawn to perfection. Henry was known for his dancing, he was nicknamed rubber legs.

He leaves his loving wife, Barbara Lemnah of Williston; his six children: Lori Lemnah and partner Pasha Lemnah of North Carolina, Lawnie Contois and partner Frank Lapointe of Richmond, Vt., Luana Bugbee and husband David of Jericho, Vt., Tim Lemnah of Colchester, Vt., David Lemnah and wife Lisa of Essex, Vt., Chad Lemnah and wife Tammy of Colchester, Vt.; two stepchildren, Jan Haskell of Burlington, Vt. and Steve Haskell of California; eight grandchildren: Chrystie Dewyea, Cory Contois, Ashley Fields, Ryan Bugbee, Brooke Lemnah, Jessica Lemnah, Logan and Hannah Lemnah; two great-grandchildren, Alexis Catherine Dewyea and Connor Michael Contois; his three siblings, Madlene Raleigh of St. Albans, Vt., Linda Hutchins and husband John of Montpelier, Vt., and Donald Lemnah and wife Louise of Long Island, N.Y.; his nieces and nephews; and the Coffee Shop Gang.

The family extends many thanks for the comforting and professional care from Dr. Greenblat, his staff, and the VNA.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006, at 1 p.m. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church, Williston. Interment will follow in Deerview cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Henry’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 121 Connor Way, Suite 240, PO Box 1460, Williston, Vt. 05495. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon in the Ready Funeral & Cremation Service Mountain View Chapel, 68 Pinecrest Dr., Essex Junction.

CLARA BOHANNON BRUYETTE

SWANTON VILLAGE - Mrs. Clara Bohannon Bruyette, age 85 years, died early Sunday evening, Nov. 12, 2006, in her North River Street residence surrounded by the family she loved so dearly.

Born in Swanton, Vt. on May 29, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Mabel (Brow) Bohannon. She attended Swanton schools and on Aug. 23, 1937, was married to Robert Joseph Bruyette, who predeceased her on Oct. 26, 1989.

Our mother was the greatest mom, grandmother, and great-grandmother that there ever was! Having her special meals everyday where everyone was always welcome at anytime, and especially her Sunday dinners with the whole family. Her family was everything to her and she loved having us with her everyday.

Mrs. Bruyette leaves six sons and their wives: Robert Bruyette Jr. and Jan, Clarence and Patricia Bruyette, Donald Sr. and Dot Bruyette, Richard Bruyette Sr., Ronnie and Patsy Bruyette and Jimmy Bruyette; three daughters and their husbands: Nancy and Wallace Hemingway, Betty and Daniel Lang, Rosemary and Donny Hakey; grandchildren, Dale and Tonya Tipper, Chris and Tammie Barratt, Donald Jr. and Tracy Bruyette, Richard Jr. and Marie Bruyette, Chad and Lindsay Bruyette, Travis Bruyette, Tracy and Ron Pilbin, Kathy and Paul Strek, Penny and Kevin Hayes, Tammy and Ricky Lapan, Raymond Hakey Jr., Danielle Lang, Scott and Krispan Hakey and Corey and Erin Hakey; 18 great-grandchildren that she loved dearly; three sisters, Velma Thibault, Thelma Smart and Florence Brown; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband and parents, she was predeceased by two sisters, Beatrice and Dorothy Bohannon.

A Private Funeral Service for family members will be held Thursday afternoon, Nov. 16, 2006, at 2 p.m. from The Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton. Father John J. Meagher, SSE will officiate. The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow in the Bruyette Family lot in Riverside cemetery. Relatives and close friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 12 noon until the time of the service.

Gifts in Mrs. Bruyette’s memory may be made to the Franklin County Home Health Agency Hospice Program, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans 05478.

MRS. CLARA BOHANNON BRUYETTE

SWANTON VILLAGE - A Funeral Service was held Thursday afternoon, Nov. 16, 2006, at 2 p.m. from The Kidder Memorial Home. Father John J. Meagher, SSE, pastor of The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Swanton and St. Louis Roman Catholic Parish, Highgate Center officiated. Music was provided by organist and soloist Claire Chevalier Hungerford. The Old Testament Reading was proclaimed by granddaughter, Penny Hayes and The New Testament Reading by granddaughter, Danielle Lang and great granddaughter, Kali Lapan.

Among the delegations in attendance were representatives from Franklin County Home Health Agency - Hospice Program, Magnan Brothers Dairy, Northern Valley Eye Care, Rene J. Fournier Farm Equipment, Bruyette’s Tree Service, Mylan Technologies, The Total Home Center, Vermont Furniture Galleries, The Super Store, Wood & Kidder, Inc., Hodgdon Brothers, Boardman Family Gardens, Bev’s Shear Expectations, Mary S. Babcock and Swanton Central Schools and Office of Doctor Milton Robison.

The Rite of Committal and Interment followed in the Bruyette family lot in Riverside cemetery with Father Meagher reading the committal prayers. The bearers, all grandsons, were Chad Bruyette, Richard Bruyette Jr., Donald Bruyette Jr., Travis Bruyette, Corey Hakey and Scott Hakey.

H. CECILIA DALTON

SWANTON VILLAGE - The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2006, at 10 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Father John J. Meagher, SSE was the celebrant and homilist. Concelebrating was Father Daniel Lokanga parochial vicar of Holy Angels Parish, St. Albans City. Edward Daniel and Joseph Gamache served as Ministers of the Altar and Mrs. Alma LaRocque as Eucharistic Minister. Music was provided by organist and soloist Mary Jo Gillilan.

A large guard of honor was formed by members of the Nativity Parish Ladies of St. Anne and Altar Society. St. Anne Society President, Yvette Ouimet, led the prayers for a deceased lady of St. Anne. The White Funeral Pall was draped over Mrs. Dalton’s casket by her niece and nephew, George and Linda Costello. The Crucifix was then placed by daughter Martha Dalton. The Old Testament Reading was proclaimed by daughter Kathryn Shanahan and The New Testament Reading by grandson Kevin D. Collins. Daughter Helen Collins and her husband Kevin J. presented The Offertory Gifts. Following communion, Special Words of Remembrance were shared by grandson Lee W. Shanahan.

Among the delegations in attendance were representatives from the former Dalton’s Auto Parts, Immaculate Conception Parish, St. Mary’s St. Albans, Franklin County Home Health Agency, Franklin County Superior Court, United States Postal Service, Northwestern Medical Center, Executive Staff and Board of Governors HUMC, Clarence Brown, Inc., GNI & Palmer, Office of Doctor Wendell Stimets and the Office Doctor O.L. Dugan.

The Rite of Committal and Interment followed at 3 p.m. at the Dalton/Lawler Family lot in St. Raphael Roman Catholic cemetery Poultney with Father Adam J. Krempa reading the committal prayers. The Honorary Bearers were Doctor O.L. Dugan and Paul LaRocque. The Active Bearers were Kevin J. Collins, Kevin D. Collins, Lee Shanahan, and Jeremy Shanahan.

MARY G. HOWE

MILTON - Mary G. Howe, 84, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Sunday evening, Nov. 12, 2006, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

Mary was born in Piermont, N.H. on Jan. 11, 1922, the daughter of Charles and Eunice (Glover) Tarbox. She moved to Georgia as a child, to what would become their homestead on Polly Hubbard Road.

She attended Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans, graduating in 1941. During World War II, she worked as a gearshaper in Springfield, working 12 hour days, 7 days a week.On April 27, 1944, she married Clifford Elmer “Rocky” Howe in the Georgia Plains Baptist Church. They settled in Milton, where they raised their family and have lived for the past 62 years, where for many years ran a dairy farm. Mary also belonged to the United Church of Milton.

Mrs. Howe was a staunch animal lover, particularly her dogs, including her latest sidekick “Lady Bug.” Her big ambition was to own a “Horse Ranch,” which today consist of a Jack and Jill still grazing on the back 10.

Her pastimes included being an unrelenting, fiercely loyal Red Sox fan, and playing a “wicked” game of Double Nines and card games with all her family and friends. Her favorite expression was “Oh, Golly” and her song to the end was “The Old Rugged Cross.”

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Clifford Howe; and her son, David Howe of Milton; her daughter, Mary Ann Palasik and her husband John, and their daughters Jenilee and Laura of Milton; her daughter, Ellen Goehlert and her husband Uwe of South Burlington; her sister, Julia Constantine of Georgia; step-sisters, Hazel Bolio of Springfield and Stella Quilliam of St. Albans; and by a loving and extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins. Mary was predeceased by her brother, Franklin Tarbox; and her sister, Lillian Lyon.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2006, at 2 p.m. in the United Church of Milton. Burial will follow in the Georgia Plains cemetery. Visiting hours will be private.

Memorials in Mary’s memory may be made to the Humane Society of Chittenden County, 142 Kindness Ct., So. Burlington, Vt. 05403.

Arrangements are by the Minor Funeral Home in Milton.

MADELINE A. NIEBUHR

ST. ALBANS - A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for Mrs. Madeline A. Niebuhr on Monday at 2 p.m. in Holy Angels Church. Father Maurice Roy was the celebrant. Sister Cecile LeBeau read the Holy Scripture Lessons. Mary Jo Gillilan was the organist and soloist. Assisting Father Roy were altar servers Maynard Gosselin and Russell Porwitzky.

Attending was a representative of Haven Health Care Center.

Casket bearers were Allen Choiniere, James Kennedy, G. Thomas Brady and Jeffrey Levesque.

Mrs. Carol Kelleher placed yellow roses on her mother’s casket that were presented by grandchildren Laura and Kevin and great-granddaughter Emily Rose Farrell.

Following prayers of committal by Father Roy, Mrs. Niebuhr will be going to St. Charles cemetery in Long Island, N.Y. to be interred next to her husband, Fred Niebuhr, at the convenience of her family.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home and Commemorative Services.

HELENE RITA TROMBLY

BEEBE ROAD, SWANTON, Vt. / HINSDALE, Mass. - Mrs. Helene Rita Trombly, age 102 years, died early Wednesday morning, Nov. 8, 2006, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law on Beebe Road in Swanton.

Born in Hinsdale, Mass., on Aug. 30, 1904, she was the daughter of parents who immigrated from Denmark, the late Lauritz and Marne (Hoskeer) Mosegaard. She graduated from the Pittsfield, Mass. High School and on Dec. 26, 1927, was married to Keith Trombly, who predeceased her on Dec. 23, 1989.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Hinsdale and has been living in the Swanton and St. Albans areas since 1990. Mrs. Trombly leaves her daughter, Lorraine Neissel of La Grange, N.C.; her son, Conan Trombly and his wife, Priscilla of Swanton; seven grandchildren, Melody Drew, Coral, Keith, Mark and Eric Neissel, Christopher Neissel, and Bonnie Skarka; five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by six sisters and one brother, as well as a nephew, Harry Dresser.

At Mrs. Trombly’s request, Funeral Services and Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements have been under the direction of The Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton, Vt. 05488.

GRANT P. CARMAN, JR.

SEATTLE, Wash. / ST. ALBANS, Vt. - Mr. Grant P. Carman Jr., 87, died Nov. 9, 2006, at his home in Seattle, Wash. where he had been residing near his daughter, Judy, for the past three years.

He was born in Superior, Wis., on May 23, 1919, son of the late Grant and Violet (Canning) Carman.

Grant served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. On Oct. 13, 1944, he married Edna Trombly, who predeceased him on Sept. 27, 1991.

He worked for New England Telephone Co. in St. Albans or Burlington from 1946 until his retirement in 1981. He was an avid bridge player and self-taught musician of the piano and organ. He was a member of the Owl Club of St. Albans and the American Legion Green Mountain Post 1.

He is survived by his four daughters, Marsha Anstey and her husband Ronald, Judy Shcwindt and her husband Greg, Kathleen Duggento and her husband Kim, and Leslie Durkee; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was predeceased by his brothers, Raymond and Robert; his sisters, Jen and Dorothy; and his in-laws, George and Emma Church.

Funeral arrangements will be at the convenience of the family.
