GILLES JOSEPH DUPUIS
ACTON VALE, PQ / ST. ALBANS, Vt.
3/3/2008

Gilles Joseph Dupuis, 70, formerly of St. Albans, Vt., died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008, in St. Hyacinthe, PQ. Gilles was born in St. Theodore-D’Acton, PQ on July 8, 1937, son of the late Cheri and Annette (Leclerc) Dupuis.

Gilles spent his life working on all things automotive, starting as a mechanic at Langlois Garage in Granby, PQ. In 1958, Gilles moved to St. Albans, Vt. and worked at Benoit Motors. In 1964, he built a garage on Newton Road and opened his own business, Gil’s Transmission. Gilles sold this business in 1985, and moved to Acton Vale, PQ, where he owned and operated Acton Vale Chrysler until his retirement in 1994.

He married Solange Guillette on July 25, 1959, who predeceased him on Sept. 16, 1987. He is survived by his daughter, Jo Anne and her husband, Vaughn Rock, of St. Albans; his son, Richard Dupuis, also of St. Albans; four grandchildren: Angela Rock and her fiancé, Juan Contreras, of Silver Springs, Md., Anthony Rock of Winooski, and Colby and Breanna Dupuis of St. Albans.

Gilles is also survived by Gisele Phaneuf, whom he married on Dec. 26, 1992, in Acton Vale, PQ; his step-children, all of PQ: stepson, Christian Regnaud and his wife, Sylvie, stepdaughter, Lyne and her husband, Pierre Turgeon; six step-grandchildren: Karine, Maxim, Louise-Anna, Genevieve, Pier-Olivier, and Samuel; three great step-grandchildren, Maite, Ophelie, and Isaie. He is also survived by his siblings, all of PQ: five sisters, Irene Brunelle, Suzanne and her husband, Sylva Gousy, Carmen LaChance, Lisette and her companion, Real Hamel, Lyne and her husband, Bruno Audet; two brothers, Norbert Dupuis and his companion, Marie-France Fortin, Rejean Dupuis and his wife, Madeleine; as well as brothers- and sisters-in-law of the Phaneuf family; and many nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours. A Memorial Mass at Holy Angels Church and internment at Mt. Calvary cemetery in St. Albans will be held at the convenience of the family.

Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the American Heart Association, 434 Hurricane Lane, Williston, Vt. 05495; or to the charity of their choice.

EARL D. PAXMAN, JR.
Richford

Earl D. Paxman Jr., 76, a former resident of this area, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, at the Redstone Villa Nursing Facility. He was born in Richford, Vt. on Aug. 9, 1931, the son of the late Earl and Bernice (Duso) Paxman.

He was educated in the Richford School system. He enlisted in the United States Army on Sept. 3, 1952, and was honorably discharged on June 3, 1954. During his working career he was a logger and carpenter.

Survivors include his son, Eric Paxman; and his daughter, Heather Louise Paxman, both of St. Albans.

Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of Earl’s family. Interment will be this spring in the Vermont Veterans cemetery in Randolph.

BRADLEY JOSEPH DeMAR
Burlington

Bradley Joseph DeMar, 55, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, at the Burlington Health and Rehab Center, following a short battle with cancer.

Brad was born on May 16, 1952, in Burlington, the son of Frederick and Juanita (Sanderson) DeMar.

He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer; and his longtime companion, Diane Brown; by three grandchildren; by his mom, Juanita DeMar; by his brothers and sisters, Roderick “DeeDee” DeMar, Wanda Pike and husband, Bruce, Diane Lussier and husband, Allen, Brenda Brown and husband, Kevin, and Russell DeMar and wife, Monica; as well as Gillian Allen of London; and by several nieces and nephews.

Bradley was predeceased by his dad, Frederick DeMar; his brothers, Ronald and Bruce DeMar; sister, Donna Turner; and nieces, Melissa and Tonya.

A funeral service was to be held today, March 3, 2008, at noon in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton. Visiting hours were held in the funeral home from 11 a.m. until the hour of the funeral.

JAMES J. IRISH

James J. Irish, age 80, died Thursday evening, Feb. 28, 2008, at the Northwestern Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Fletcher, Vt. on June 24, 1927, the youngest of 13 children, to Charles and Mabelle (Lahey) Irish. He grew up in Fairfax. He joined the United States Navy in 1945, returned from active service, and graduated from Bellows Free Academy-Fairfax in 1947.

On March 6, 1948, he married Joyce Popple. They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this week.

Jim was an avid sports fan all his life. He excelled at every sport he participated in. At the age of 14, he was the pitcher for Fairfax Town Baseball Team and later was the pitcher for the St. Albans Giants. He was a member of the St. Albans Bowling League for many years, and also played in numerous Horseshoe Tournaments. He was also a member of the Green Mountain Legion Post 1 in St. Albans.

Jim retired from Central Vermont Public Service after 32 years of service, and he and Joyce moved to Bradenton, Fla., where they resided for 27 years. They recently returned to Vermont because of his health, and to be closer to their family.

During their retirement, they spent many enjoyable vacations cruising, and returned to Vermont frequently to spend time with their family.

He is survived by his loving wife and companion, Joyce of Enosburg Falls; and their three daughters: Bonnie Evans (Michael) of Swanton, Dr. Sharon Irish Bevins (Thomas) of Lehigh Acres, Fla., and Susan Irish-Reed (Alfred “John”) of Sheldon; their six grandchildren: Jennifer Burns (Rodney), Keely Remillard (Chad) of Enosburg Falls, Brendan and Tyler Bevins of Florida, and Justin and Hilary Wells of Sheldon; and six great-grandchildren, Alec, Hannah, and Sophie Burns, Aidan, Sawyer, and Elle Remillard. Jim also leaves one sister-in-law, Bessie Mae Irish of Bristol, Vt.; and approximately 100 cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; three sisters; and nine brothers.

Jim was especially proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and never missed an opportunity to tell everyone about them. He took great pride in knowing that Tyler is now enrolled in medical school at the University of Miami.

Jim never met a stranger. He could always find something in common with anyone he met. He was a friend to all who knew him, and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Donations in his memory may be made to Franklin County Home Health, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, Vt.; or the Franklin County Humane Society, 30 Sunset Meadows, St. Albans, Vt.

At his request, private services will be held at the convenience of the family at a later date.

DONNA JEAN LONTINE
East Berkshire

Mrs. Donna Jean Lontine, 61, of East Berkshire, Vt., died peacefully on March 2, 2008, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born Feb. 1, 1947, in Newport, a daughter of Leo and Thelma (Morse) Cheney. On June 7, 1974, she married Richard (Dick) Lontine, who survives her.

In 1988, she was employed by the Spears Pharmacy in Enosburg Falls, and the last six years she was Manager for the Enosburg Pharmacy in Enosburg Falls. Her passion and joy in life was spending time with her children and grandchildren. Among her hobbies she was avid reader, and she enjoyed knitting and sewing. She also enjoyed outdoor activities, especially swimming and camping.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Richard (Dick) Lontine of East Berkshire; and by her following children: Robin Kelley and her companion, Tommy Gale of Sheldon, Tawnya Tipper and her husband, Dale of Lexington, S.C., Carmen Poland and her husband, Robert, of Georgia, Shannon Lontine and her companion, John Rosploch, of Montgomery Center, and Peggy Lontine and her companion, Edmund Bryce, of Enosburg Falls. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Kyle Churchill and his wife, Amber, Jessie Kelley and her fiancé, David Peters, Kaylee Tipper, Jared and Brooke Poland, Sierra Dunakin, Savannah Lontine, Ethan and Ian Bryce, and by her great-grandchildren: Brianna Kelley, Hailey Churchill, Brandon Kane and Brett Peters; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She is survived by a brother, Frank Cheney Sr. of Newport; two sisters, Beverly Britch of Newport and Diane Renihan and her husband, David, of Jupiter, Fla. She was predeceased by a son, Wayne Dwight Kelley Jr.; by a sister, Barbara Warner; and by the following brothers: Leo, Walter, Edgar, Erwin, Donald, Robert, and Wayne Cheney.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, March 7, 2008, at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Memorial Chapel, 37 Lake Road, Newport. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the hour of the service on Friday at the funeral home. (Parking and easy ramped entrance in rear of funeral home.)

WINNIFRED M. ‘WINNIE’ HAUGLAND
Highgate Springs

Winnifred M. Haugland, age 91 years, a resident of this area since 1968 and a summer-resident since the early ‘30s, passed away on March 2, 2008.

Winnifred was born in Westmount, Quebec Canada on Oct. 10, 1916, the daughter of the late Nelson and Mary (Spear) Davies. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of nearly sixty years Russell Haugland, in 1968.

For decades, as an elementary school teacher, Winnifred worked for the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal and the Macdonald Board on Montreal’s west-island. Upon moving with her husband to become a full time resident of Vermont, “Winnie,” as she was affectionately called, taught for another 10 years at the St. Albans Bay School, as well as at other area schools. She and her husband attended The First Congregational Church of Swanton, where Winnifred helped to organize the Sunday School and played the church organ for Sunday services. Winnifred was a gifted pianist and artist.

Survivors include her son, William Haugland and his wife, Linda, her daughter, Muriel Codrington and her husband, de Vere; her grandchildren, Heidi Vaughn, Hugh, Matthew and James Haugland, Cari Mezick (Angus) and Craig Codrington (Nicole); and six great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law Alice Davies; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Winnifred was preceded in death by her son, Thomas in 1977; and her siblings, Malcolm, Muriel and Laura Davies.

A Private Funeral Service will be held Thursday, March 6, 2008, from The Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton. The Reverend Daniel Brueckner, pastor of The Swanton Christian Church, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Haugland family lot in Riverside cemetery. There will be no public calling hours.

Alma Frances (Simard) LaRocque

DATELINE: Swanton

Alma Frances (Simard) LaRocque, 85, went to meet her Lord at sunrise on Easter Sunday, March 23, 2008, after a brief illness. Alma was born at home in Swanton on, October 3, 1922 to the late Joseph and Anna (Pinelle) Simard.

She attended the former Saint Anne’s Academy graduating as Salutatorian of her class. On January 29, 1946 after a long courtship during World War II, Alma married Ephraim LaRocque. They spent 31 years together, raising five children. Ephraim predeceased Alma on March 27, 1977.

In addition to her responsibilities as a devoted wife and mother, Alma worked several years at Pearl’s Department Store and later at Prouty’s / Blouin’s IGA all in Swanton.

Alma spent all of her life as a devoted and active member of The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She was a member of both the parish’s Altar Society and Ladies of Saint Anne assisting with many dinners, visiting the sick and teaching religious education. She was also always very faithful to bringing communion to the shut-ins until just a month ago. Alma loved life and lived according to her strong Catholic faith, becoming an Associate of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit. She continued living out her faith, helping to establish the Pastoral Care Department at the Northwestern Medical Center as well as serving as a volunteer with the Franklin County Home Health Hospice Program.

She truly enjoyed life. She always had a smile, a baked good, a meal ready in a “jiffy’, or simply a hug to satisfy anyone. She enjoyed playing tennis with her friends and singing with the Grandma’s and Grandpa’s Choral Group.

Alma is survived by her daughter, Jackie Washburn and husband Bruce of Vancouver, WA; sons, Andy and wife Sue and Jim and wife Diane all of Swanton; she was predeceased by her daughter, Janet in November of 1963, and son, Steven in May of 1977. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Christine and Jonathan Hutchins of Cambridge, Jason and Carmelina LaRocque of Agawam, MA, Jeremy and companion Janice Camara of Highgate, Jennifer and Joshua Barney of Monkton, Jessica and fiancé Walter Ochs of Milton, Patrick and Jessica LaRocque of Macedon, NY, Joshua and Ashley LaRocque of Swanton, Tim LaRocque of Syracuse, NY and Adam and Gabriel Washburn of Vancouver, WA; Five great grandchildren, Antonio and Marisa LaRocque and three to be born in May and June. She had four children that survived for a short time after birth.

Alma is also survived by her brother-in-law, J. Paul LaRocque of Saint Albans; sisters-in-law, Rhoda LaRocque and Aurilla L’Esperance both of Swanton and several nieces, nephews and many dear friends.

Besides her husband, children and parents she was predeceased by her mother and father-in-law, Wilfred and Lura LaRocque; her siblings, Stella LaRocque, Euclid Simard, Gilbert Simard, Bernard Simard, Alice Mercier, George Simard, Sister Marion Simard DHS, Fr. Ernest Simard, SSE; brothers-in-law, Clarence “Lefty” LaRocque; sisters-in-law, Hilda LaRocque Curran, Laurie LaRocque and many others.

The family would like to express their sincere thanks to Fr. Benedict Kiely and the doctors and nurses at the Northwestern Medical Center for their compassion and care.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, March 29, 2008, at 11 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada St., Swanton. Fr. Benedict C. Kiely will be the celebrant and homilist. The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at the Simard / LaRocque family lot in Saint Mary’s cemetery. Friends may call at The Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton, (802-868-3331), Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Gifts in Alma’s memory may be made to The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in care of Fr. Catherine (Taylor) Grandchamp

DATELINE: Swanton/St. Albans

Catherine (Taylor) Grandchamp, 87, of St. Albans and formerly, for many years of Swanton, died peacefully, Thursday, April 17, 2008 following a brief illness.

Born in Fletcher on July 6, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Elazer and Jennie (Thompson) Taylor. Catherine was predeceased by her husband of sixty years, Amory in 1997.

Catherine was well known in Swanton for her baking and cooking skills, often providing meals at the Swanton American Legion where she was a lifetime member and also frequently assisted Amory as bartender and chief cook and bottle washer.

Mrs. Grandchamp loved and had amazing healing powers with animals. People often dropped off sick dogs, cats, birds and a menagerie of other animals that Catherine nursed back to health. She also had that talent with people, often taking in boarders in her Swanton home.

In her last four years, Catherine lived with her only and beloved daughter, Tina Lang and family of St. Albans. For the last five months, Catherine was a resident of Haven Health and Rehabilitation Center where she made many friends.

She is survived by her only daughter, Tina Lang and Tina’s husband, Scott; grandchildren Amanda Connelly and her husband Randall of Highgate, Kyle Gagner and his friend Missy LaBounty of Fairfield and Allison Gagner of St. Albans as well as their father, Clovis Gagner of St. Albans. Catherine is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Blake Connelly and Kaleb Gagner and several nieces and nephews. In addition, Catherine and Amory helped to raise two nephews, Sonny Austin of Virginia who survives her and Neil Austin who predeceased her in 2000. She was predeceased by all of her siblings.

Catherine’s family would like to warmly acknowledge the care and support she received from the office and staff of Dr. Ned Shulman, Franklin County Home Health, Haven Health and Rehabilitation Center and particularly the caring and compassionate nursing staff and doctors at Northwestern Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 21, 2008 at 11 AM at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton where friends may call prior to the service from 10-11 AM. Following interment in the family lot in Riverside cemetery, Swanton, Catherine’s family will host a reception at the home of Tina and Scott Lang, 29 Adams St., St. Albans.

Gifts in Catherine’s memory may be made to the Franklin County Humane Society, 30 Sunset Meadows, St. Albans, 05478.
