JAMES R. ARTHUR
Shelburne/St. Albans, Vt.
3/6/2008

James R. Arthur passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2008. He was born in Ticonderoga, N.Y. on Sept. 30, 1913, the son of James H. and Harriet (Porter) Arthur.

He formerly resided in St. Albans, and was employed by IBM for 14 years in Burlington and Boca Raton, Fla. Prior to moving to Vermont, Jim was a Crew Chief at General Electric Flight Test Operation in Scotia, N.Y., where he was involved with new innovations in helicopters, including the building and testing of the first gyrocopter. There he earned his commercial Pilot Rating in Helicopters, even though he had never flown a fixed-wing aircraft.

As Jim’s family grew in Scotia, N.Y., he realized that he would need a bigger house. He decided to build a brick home on his own. Although he was an expert mechanic and metal smith in the Navy, he was not knowledgeable about house construction. However, by observing others and doing his own research, he built a brick home for his family in the evenings and on weekends, while still working at his daily job. When Jim visited the house many years later, the current owner complimented him on a “trouble-free house.”

Jim was known as an enthusiastic story teller. He was a World War II Navy Veteran and proudly served as a Chief Petty Officer and air crewman aboard the U.S.S. South Dakota, also known as “Battleship X.” He and his fellow crew members were awarded the Navy Unit Commendation for outstanding heroism in their action during the Battle of Santa Cruz.

He is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-five years, Flora; daughter, Flora Hurteau and husband, Timothy, of Georgia; grandsons, Matthew and wife, Sarah, of Arizona, Timothy J. and wife, Lisa; great-grandson, Porter of Georgia; son, Michael and wife, Maddi, of Essex Junction; grandson, Jeffrey and wife, Nancy, and great-granddaughter, Molly, of Colorado; granddaughter, Kelly of Colorado; daughter, Maureen Miller and husband, Edwin, of California; grandsons, Nathaniel, Zachary and Jacob, all of California; son, James C. and wife, Ikuko of California; and granddaughter, Yuri of Washington, D.C.

A Celebration of Jim’s life will take place at the Heald Funeral Chapel, 87 South Main St., St. Albans on Saturday, March 8, 2008, at 1 p.m. with the Reverend Maurice J. Roy, pastor of Holy Angels Church, officiating. Jim’s family will receive friends following the service until 3 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be this spring at the Vermont Veteran’s cemetery in Randolph.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.

VINCENT PAUL MADDEN
South Burlington
3/11/2008

Vincent Paul Madden, who moved to South Burlington two years ago as a second retirement, died peacefully on March 8, 2008. He was 92 and remained hale and hearty to the last.

His children and their families were his foremost interest. After a long retirement in Savannah, Ga., Vince and his wife, Nancy (Riddle) Madden, moved to Vermont to be closer to their children.

Vince was born in Yonkers, N.Y., on Nov. 13, 1915. During World War II he served with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific. After the war, he found Nancy in California and they were married in West Palm Beach, Fla. on Jan. 15, 1950. Vince took advantage of the GI Bill to attend the University of Denver, where he studied Food Service Management, and his first professional job was director of food services for the University of Wyoming.

During his career, Vince worked in the New York and Washington, D.C. areas, responsible for regional food service operations. He was proud of his position as director of the U.S. Senate Dining Room during the late 1950s and recounted many humorous stories of interactions with the various hot-tempered and/or egotistical political leaders of the day.

After retiring in 1978, Vince joined an organization that sends U.S. volunteer experts to assist businesses in developing countries. He worked in Brazil, Thailand, Zimbabwe, Mexico, and Egypt. In every country, Vince formed lasting relationships with his business colleagues.

During his retirement, Vince pursued his love of cooking and found more time to play golf. He was known to always have a book in his back pocket - usually a spy novel.

Vince leaves his wife and their three children and families: Paul and Vanessa Madden of Sheldon, Vt. with their children, Nils, Rosalie, Laura Lee, Alexander and Melanie; Lee Madden and Gwen Trumbull of Brattleboro, Vt. with their children, Carrie and Cole; and Kathryn Madden and Roger Herzog of Watertown, Mass. with their children, Madelyn and Norah. From a previous marriage, he is survived by his daughter, Joan and Ron Sorensen of Palm Desert, Calif.; and six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Vince was predeceased by a son, Robert Madden.

A memorial service for Vince will be held in East Sheldon, Vt., on May 3, 2008.
