ROLLANDE L. SIMARD
St. Albans

Mrs. Rollande L. Simard, age 78, died Sunday evening, July 20, 2008, in the Franklin County Rehab Center, with her loving family at her bedside.

She was born in Montreal, Quebec, Jan. 24, 1930, daughter of the late Joseph and Marie-Louise (Dube) Mercier. She enjoyed bowling, golfing, playing cards, and will be remembered as a good cook.

Her survivors include her five children, Ghislaine Firkey Manning and her husband, Jay Manning of St. Albans, Micheline Simard of Venice, Fla., Louise and her husband, Tony Farah, of Coral Springs, Fla., Robert and his wife, Darlene Simard, of St. Albans, Gerard Simard, of St. Albans Town, nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, four sisters, one brother and the father of her children, Noel Simard of St. Albans.

She was predeceased by her parents, her sister, and a brother.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m.. in the Brady & Levesque Funeral Chapel. Friends may call at the funeral home, 86 South Main St., from 7 to 9 Tuesday evening. Interment will be in the Simard family lot in Mt. Calvary cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Samaritan House, 22 Kingman St., St. Albans, VT., 05478.

An online condolence book has been established for Rollande’s family at the funeral home Web site (www.bnlfh.com). The Simard family has entrusted arrangements to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home and Commemorative Services.

Funeral services for Mrs. Rollande L. Simard were held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Brady& Levesque Chapel. Deacon Duane Langlois, Deacon of Holy Angels Church, officiated. Mary Jo Gillilan was the organist and soloist. Granddaughter Melinda Lussier composed and read a poem reflecting on her grandmother’s life.

Among those present were representatives of Holiday House, physician office of Dr. Ned Shulman, Mac’s Quick Stop, J&L Garage, Go-Go Gas Co., Dufault Construction Co., parishioners of St. Mary’s, Holy Angels and Church of the Rock, and several residents of Beth-El Court.

Casket bearers were sons-in-law, Jay Manning and Michael Firkey; grandson, Grant Simard; and friends, John McErnany II, James Kennedy, and Allen Choiniere.

Following Prayers of Committal by Deacon Langlois, granddaughter Melinda Lussier played a flute solo of "Wind Beneath My Wings." Those present then placed a red rose tribute on Rollande’s casket and interment was in the Simard family lot in Mt. Calvary cemetery.

A bereavement luncheon was held at Church of the Rock for family and friends, hosted by the Church of the Rock family.

Tuesday evening, a Christian Wake Service was held with Father Daniel Lokanga, Deacon Langlois and Seminarian James Dodson, co-officiating, in the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

ELIZABETH O. CARON

Elizabeth O. Caron, 88, died Sunday morning July 20, 2008 in the Starr Farm Nursing Home in Burlington.

Elizabeth was born on April 14, 1920 in Sheldon, the daughter of Frank and Lillian (Furkey) Sholan.

On June 21, 1941 she married Joseph Caron in Lewiston, Maine.

Elizabeth was a longtime parishioner of St. Ann’s in Milton and of Our Lady of Grace in Colchester.

She loved cross-stitching, needlepoint and knitting. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She especially loved caring for newborns.

Elizabeth is survived by her sons Larry Caron and wife, Cynthia, of Williston; Dennis Caron of Colchester; Richard Caron, of Williston; and Gary Caron and wife, Patty, of Colchester. She is also survived by her daughters Patty Atwood and husband, Ray, of Bolton; Judy Caron-Mayville of Maryville, Tenn.; and Janice Bolio and husband, Jim, of Milton. Survivors also include 17 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, her sister Frances Sholan of St. Albans, sisters Jeannette Raymo and husband Bob Britch of Sheldon and Rita Cheney of Hartford, Conn., and by several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Caron, on Sept. 25, 1976, her sister Nelda Gamache and by her brother-in-law Bartlett Ramo.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday July 24, 2008 at 11 a.m. in St. Ann Catholic Church in Milton. Burial will follow in St. Luke’s cemetery in Fairfax.

Elizabeth’s family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Craig Bartlett and those at Fletcher Allen Health Care and Starr Farm Nursing Home for the excellent care given to Elizabeth during her times of need.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday July 23, 2008 from 2 to 4 p.m. with a wake service held by Father Feltz at 3:45 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home, located on Route 7 in Milton.

CHRISTOS E. MENEMENLIS
St. Bruno, Quebec

Christos E. Menemenlis, 82, a summer resident of 87 Cedarvale Est, South Alburgh, passed away unexpectedly at his cottage on Saturday evening, July 19, 2008.

Born on June 11, 1926, in Athens, Greece he was the son of the late Demetrios and Eleni (Vouyioukoglou) Menemenlis.

Christos, a Ph.D., worked as a Fellow Researcher at the Research Institute of Hydro-Quebec. He was one of the pioneer scientists who founded this unique world renowned Research Institute.

He was also professor of High Voltage Engineering at the Universite de Quebec. He later became professor of High Voltage Engineering and Dean of the Electrical Engineering Department at the Greek University of Patras. Christos was Life Fellow of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), member of the Scientific Committee of ICLP (International Conference on Lightning Protection) and Chairman of ELOT (Greek Standardization Organization for Lightning Protection).

Survivors include his wife, Fotini (Kladakis) Menemenlis of St. Bruno, Quebec; a son, Dimitris Menemenlis and his wife, Kate of Los Angeles, Calif., three daughters, Liana Hopkins and her husband, Sean of White Plains, N.Y.; Nickie Menemenlis and her husband, Ouri Feinberg of St. Bruno, Quebec; and Christiana Brenin and her husband, David of Charlottesville, Va. Christos is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Brian, Siobhan, Alexandra, Jessika, Anastacia, Sophia, Christos, Esther, Shailie and Eleni.

A Liturgy of the Word will be celebrated on Friday, July 25, 2008, at 10 a.m. at St Anne Shrine on Saint Anne’s Road in Isle La Motte. The Reverend Brian Cummings, S.S.E. will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in the South Alburgh cemetery. Assisting the Menemenlis family is the Heald Funeral Home of St. Albans.

MARTHA GLENN TILLOTSON
Enosburg Falls

Martha Glenn Tillotson, age 85, passed away Friday evening, July 18, 2008, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

She was born Feb. 22, 1923, in Knoxville, Iowa, the daughter of the late Claude A. and Ella Glenn (Gaylord) Phelps.

Martha served in the U.S. Navy Waves during World War II, receiving her honorable discharge with the rank of SK2c. She was a 1953 graduate of the University of Vermont receiving her BS in Education. She taught math at Enosburg Falls High School for 30 years retiring in 1985. She was a devoted teacher, taking whatever time was needed to help her students succeed.

She was a member of the Enosburg Falls United Methodist Church, Delta Kappa Gamma (Zeta Chapter), National Education Association, Vermont Retired Teachers Association, and the Franklin/Lamoille Retired Teachers Association.

She enjoyed playing golf and was a longtime member of the Enosburg Falls Country Club where she was a multiple time ladies club champion. She also enjoyed knitting reading and working in her flower gardens.

She is survived by her husband, Wendell E. “Barney” Tillotson, of Enosburg Falls. They were married Aug. 25, 1944. She is also survived by her son, Lee Tillotson and his wife, Susan, of Bakersfield; two daughters, Janet Machia and her husband, Bernard, of Bakersfield, and Kathy Bokori and her husband, Tom, of Scottsville, Ky.; five grandchildren: Leif Tillotson and his fiancé, Amy Gary, Courtney Tillotson, his wife, Sara, and their children, Jarrett and Avery, Jeremy Tillotson, his companion, Emily Garceau, and their daughter, Ruby, Shaun Machia, his wife, Angela, and their children, Marisa and Rowen, and Jackie Daviau, her husband, Steve, and their son, Isaac; two sisters, Elizabeth Beard of Houston, Texas, and Arlene Nichol of Carthage, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a daughter, Claudia Tillotson; a granddaughter, Megan Fitzgerald; a brother, Claude A. Phelps Jr.; and sisters, Clara Swayze and Roxa Dill.

Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, July 22, 2008, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.

Memorial services and interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family with interment being held at the Tillotson family lot in the Maple Grove cemetery in Bakersfield.

GERTRUDE MARIE LAVOIE

The Liturgy of the Angels was celebrated Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at 11 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Father Thomas D. Nadeau was the celebrant and homilist. Joseph Gamache and John Tougas served as Ministers of the Altar. Music was provided by organist and soloist, Claire Chevalier Hungerford, with special music by nephew, Michael Archambault, singing Shubert’s “Ave Maria.” Prior to the liturgy, Special Words of Remembrance were shared by nephew, Brian Bilodeau.

The White Funeral Pall was draped over Gertrude’s casket by her sisters, Lawrence Barkyoumb, Annette Deragon and Simone Lavoie. The Crucifix was then placed by niece, Cathy Wolf, and great-niece, Taylor Wolfe. The Old Testament Reading was proclaimed by niece, Nancy Lavoie, and The New Testament Reading by nephew, Andre Deragon. The Offertory Gifts were presented by nieces, Diane Rightout, Doris Archambault, Pat Lavoie and Lauren Russin.

Among the delegations in attendance were representatives from the Vermont House of Representatives, Franklin County Rehab Center, Holiday House, Swanton Town Offices, Flowers by Debbie, TD Banknorth, Lavoie Construction, Pizzagalli Construction and Franklin County Home Health Agency.

The Rite of Committal and Interment followed at the Lavoie family lot in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic cemetery with Father Nadeau reading the committal prayers. The bearers, all nephews, were Gaston Gagner, David Cyr, Eugene Lavoie, Robert Garrow, Marcel Lavoie and Michael Barkyoumb. Following The Prayers of Committal, a Bereavement Luncheon was served to family and friends in the Nativity Parish Center hosted by the Ladies of St. Anne.

IRENE MARIE-ROSE RAINVILLE

The Liturgy of Christian Burial was concelebrated Monday, July 21, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. from St. Louis Roman Catholic Church. Father Thomas D. Nadeau was the principle celebrant and homilist. Also concelebrating was Father Bernard J. Bechard, SSE. John Ferland and Paul Laroche served as Ministers of the Altar. Music was provided by organist and soloist, Claire Chevalier Hungerford. A large guard of honor was formed by members of the St. Louis Parish Ladies of St. Anne. The Crucifix was placed on Irene’s casket by her son Hubert “Jake” Rainville. Readings from The Old and New Testament were proclaimed by granddaughters, Helen Choiniere-Shields and Denise Cox. The Offertory Gifts were presented by grandchildren, Carmen and Gabriele Trahan and great-granddaughter Katherine Trahan. Among the delegations in attendance were representatives from the, Franklin Homestead and Carriage House, Franklin Town Offices, Franklin Rescue, M&C Transport, Highgate Town Offices, Swanton Fire Department and Auxiliary, O.C. McCuin & Sons, Missisquoi Valley Union High School, Highgate and Sheldon School Districts, M&T Sand and Gravel. Grand Avenue Enterprises, Hi-Swans Senior Citizens, Northwestern Medical Center, Wood & Kidder, Inc., Sisters of St. Joseph and Highgate Historical Society.

The Rite of Committal and Interment followed in the Rainville family lot in St. Louis cemetery with Father Nadeau assisted by Father Bechard reading the committal prayers. The Bearers were grandsons, Conrad Choiniere, Eric Choiniere, Robert Choiniere, Lloyd Larrow, Lance Freeman and great grandson, Tyler Larrow. Following The Prayers of Committal a bereavement luncheon was served in the Father Jean Paul Laplante Parish Center hosted by, Mrs. Raymonde Choiniere and the Ladies of St. Anne.

BRUCE S. PIERCE
Palm Coast, Fla.

Bruce S. Pierce, 71, of Palm Coast, Fla., passed away peacefully July 30, 2008, at Florida Hospital, Flagler Beach, Fla. A memorial service celebrating his life was held on Sunday, Aug. 3.

Bruce was born on Dec. 28, 1936, in Morrisville, Vt., the eldest son of the late Donald C. Pierce and Glendola (Dolly) S. Pierce. He grew up in Richford and St. Albans, Vt., and graduated from Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans, Class of 1955. Bruce served in the U.S. Army and worked for many years maintaining signals for the Central Vermont Railway in southern New England. He lived in Ludlow, Mass. for most of his working career prior to retiring to Palm Coast in 1996.

Bruce was a generous man of many interests. He traded stocks; played master level chess; donated much time and talent to Habitat for Humanity, including serving as the President of the local chapter in Springfield, Mass. He traveled to such places as Belize and Africa and donated a kidney to a lady at his church. He was known for his great sense of humor and lively wit. Bruce was an active member of Palm Coast United Methodist Church at the time of his death.

He is survived by his loving wife, Judith C. Pierce of Palm Coast; two daughters, Kealie Pierce and husband, Bobby Walden, of Montgomery, Ala., and Melissa Arnold and husband Ken of Monson, Mass.; son, Scott Pierce and wife, Michelle, of Kingman, Ariz.; six grandchildren: Emily, Alex, Eli and Mirabella Pierce, and Melinda and Ryan Arnold; two brothers, D. Gregory Pierce and wife, Paula Kane, of St. Albans, Vt., and Stephen J. Pierce of Essex Junction, Vt.; several nieces and nephews; and many extended family members.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Palm Coast United Methodist Church, 5200 Belle Terre Pkwy, Palm Coast, FL, 32137; or Flagler Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 187, Bunnell, FL 32110.

GEORGE J. KAVCHAK
St. Albans

Funeral services for George J. Kavchak, who passed away on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, were held on Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, at 11 a.m. in St. Paul’s United Methodist Church with the Reverend Herman Benjamin officiating. The Praying Hands Cross was placed on George’s casket by his two daughters, Kathleen Swallick and Barbara Schoen-Jahngen. Music selected for the service was “Go Rest High” by Vince Gill, congregational hymns selected were: “What A Friend We Have in Jesus,” “God Will Take Care of You,” “On Eagles Wing,” ” Whispering Hope,” and “Amazing Grace.” Organist was Martha Maxfield. Special music “How Great Thou Art” was by Amy Sherrer on the saxophone; “In the Garden” by Ruth Nichols as pianist; and “Raise Me Up” by Holly Sherrer, soloist. The Old Testament readings were by granddaughter, Tamara Conin, and family friend, John Standowski. The New Testament reading was by great-granddaughter, Sarah Schoen. Family remembrances were by grandson, Jack Schoen.

In attendance was representation from Rock Tenn, Franklin Home Health Agency, Robert E. Glidden Post 758 VFW Ladies Auxiliary and St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.

Casket bearers were grandsons, Scott Schoen and Jack Schoen; great-grandsons, Gregory Schoen and Cory Schoen; and family friends, Leo Teague and Walt Sherrer.

A luncheon followed in the church Fellowship Hall, hosted by the St. Paul’s Women’s Mission Circle. Prayers of Committal by Reverend Benjamin were held at the Kavchak family lot in St. Anthony’s cemetery in Sheldon.

Assisting the Kavchak family is the Heald Funeral Home of St. Albans.
