STELLA M. BORSKI
WHITING, N.J.
2/10/2009

Stella M. Borski, 86, passed away peacefully at the Community Medical Center in Tom’s River, N.J., on Feb. 2, 2009, after a long battle with cancer.

Stella was born to Harry and Lillian Monk in Chorley, England, on Aug. 5, 1922. During World War II, she worked as a secretary for the British Royal Navy and occasionally drove an ambulance. Defying German bombing raids, her mother, Lillian, often left the air raid shelter and went inside to make herself some tea. Stella emulated her mother’s courage, bravely fighting her five-year battle with cancer, never complaining and always showing concern for everyone else.

Stella immigrated to the U.S. on March 1, 1947, and married Maurice Mulkeen in Jersey City, N.J. The family eventually settled in Valley Cottage, N.Y., and raised five children: Patricia Cusack (husband Bob) of Modena, N.Y., David Mulkeen (wife Mena) of Brewster, N.Y., Brian Mulkeen (wife Camille) of Monroe, N.Y., Robert Mulkeen of Sheldon Springs, Vt., and Brenda Mikolajczyk of Cumming, Ga.

In May of 1989, Stella married Anthony Borski, the love of her life. Stella and Tony took several trips to England and had nine wonderful years together before Tony succumbed to cancer in 1997. Since 1947, Stella regularly met with her “war bride” friends. The English brides would meet socially for tea and luncheons, each taking turns as host. Her favorite pastime was to sit beside the ocean and feel the fresh salty air blow in from the sea. She could outwalk her children on the boardwalk and was “beach grandma” to her grandchildren. Stella drew her strength from her catholic faith as well. She was a Eucharistic Minister at her local church and despite her own illness, took communion to those who were unable to attend mass.

In addition to her children, she is survived by her grandchildren: Patti, Dawn, Brian, Michael, Erin, Eric, Elizabeth, and Alex; as well as great-grandchildren: Danny, Robert, Tyler, Kayla, Julian, Kyle, and Joshua; two brothers-in-law, Thomas Mulkeen of Jersey City, nephews, Tommy and John, and a niece, Deborah; and Bryan Leech of Manchester, England, and nieces, Susan and Judith.

Stella will be missed by all who knew her: her endearing friends, George Berzinskas and Jean Van Lierop of Whiting, Charlie and Lee Villwock, Jim and Mary Mascoli, neighbors from Somerdale, and Lillian Krause, her neighbor and friend from Jersey City.

A funeral service was held Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009, at St. Anne Elizabeth Seton Church in Whiting, N.J. An internment will be held in the spring at General William C. Doyle Veterans cemetery, in Wrightstown, N.J.

A donation can be made to the American Cancer Society.
