MARY E. SANDERSON

ST. ALBANS/MILTON - Mary E. Sanderson, 80, of Lake Street, died early Saturday morning, Oct. 27, 2001, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

Mrs. Sanderson was born Oct. 12, 1921 in Maysville, Ky., the daughter of Sam and Pearl Lyons Mullikin.

On March 1, 1951, she married Charles Sanderson in Omaha, Neb. Mary and Charles moved to various places in the country prior to relocating back to Vermont. She had been employed by the Holland Furnace Company in Cincinnati, Ohio for a number of years, She later worked for the W.T. Grant Company in Long Beach, Calif., and the J.M. Fields Corporation in Florida as a credit manager for several years.

She is survived by her husband, Charles, of St. Albans, and her three grandchildren, Elizabeth, Tina, and Duane. She also leaves her mother-in-law, Elsie Duffy of VerDelle Village in St. Albans.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Sandra McMican in 1998 and her brother, Elmer Mullikin in 1987.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, at 10 a.m. in the Minor Funeral Home, Rt. 7, Milton, with the Rev. Jeffrey Cornwell officiating. Burial will follow in the Milton Village Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Mary's memory may be made to the Vermont Lung Association, 30 Farrell St., S. Burlington, Vt. 05403-9987. Visiting hours will be held Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 30, from 2-4 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton.

WILBUR C. LOCKE

WATERVILLE - Wilbur C. Locke, age 86, of Waterville, passed away Friday, Oct. 26, 2001, at his home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Waterville on Aug. 15, 1915, the son of the late Edwin B. and Jennie L (Codding) Locke.

Wilbur was a veteran and longtime member of the Waterville Union Church, serving as a trustee for many years. He was a Masonic member of the Mt. Mansfield #26 of Jericho and also a member of the Waterville Cemetery Association. He owned an operated the former Lockes IGA store for 15 years. Prior to this he worked with his brothers at the Locke Bros. Oar Shop in Waterville. He also did some wallpapering and painting throughout Lamoille County.

In 1967 he was hired as the head of maintenance at Lamoille Union High School and subsequently retired from there in 1983.

"Papa Locke" as he was affectionately known by both family and friends, is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marion (Whiting) Locke of Waterville; a son, Stephen Locke of Belvidere; a daughter, Kathi Locke and her husband James Stewart of Phoenix, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Nichole Carney and her husband Paul, Kylee Locke and her best friend Bart Bezio, Ana Baker, Mark Adams and his wife Grace, Jess Adams and his best friend Sarah Finlay, Jeremy Adams; four great-grandchildren, Kenneth Tourangeau, Harley Adams, Elise Carney, Jack Carney; a brother, Phillip G. Locke and his wife Carol of Morrisville; a brother-in-law George Giddings of North Hyde Park; one sister-in-law Maybelle Locke of Rochester; several nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom were very special to him.

He was predeceased by five brothers, Ray Richardson, Lloyd, Maryland, Roger, and Wilmer Locke; two sisters, Margie Locke, and Edwinna Giddings.

Papa's joy was his family and friends, of which there were many. You could always count on leaving with a smile after a visit. Some of his best times in earlier years were with his family and friends during deer season, a time he looked forward to each year. In his later years, when unable to hunt, he took great joy in attending the Saturday night card parties always ready for a game of 500.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 30, from 6-9 p.m. in the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 31, at 11 a.m. in the Waterville Union Church with the Reverend Richard Dickey officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in Mountain View Cemetery, Waterville. Memorial contributions may be made in Wilbur's memory to the Waterville Union Church c/o Jenene Edwards, treasurer, 5480 Vt. 15, Jeffersonville, Vt. 05464, or Lamoille Home Health and Hospice, 54 Farr Ave., Morrisville, Vt. 05661. Arrangements are by the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home, 1176 Main St., Fairfax.

BARBARA MAE LOCKE

HIGHGATE -- Mrs. Barbara Mae Locke, 72, a lifelong resident of this community, died early Thursday morning, Oct. 25, 2001, in the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

She was born in Highgate, Sept. 2, 1929, the daughter of the late Harold and Doris (Wells) Bard. She graduated from Highgate High School with the Class of 1947 and attended Johnson State College. On Feb. 15, 1951 she married Everett James Locke who predeceased her on Jan. 22, 1999.

In earlier years, Barbara had worked as a waitress at the former Manor Mayfair in Highgate Falls and for the Union Carbide Corporation in St. Albans. More recently she had been associated with the United States Census Bureau and was also an area Avon representative for many years. She was a longtime member of the Highgate United Methodist Church.

Barbara leaves her children, Bonnie Locke of Highgate Center, Kathy Locke and her companion Pat Prue of Sheldon, Judy Benoit and her husband Denis of Swanton and a son, Bruce Locke and his wife Deborah also of Swanton. Other survivors are two sisters, Alberta Westover of St. Albans and Elaine Ungerwitter of Highgate Falls; and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Sartwell of Highgate; 12 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A brother, Harold Bard Jr. and three sisters, Geraldine Perrotti, Etta Johnson and Shirley Barratt, predeceased her.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at 10 a.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton. The Reverend Marcheta Townsend, pastor of the Highgate United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will follow in the family lot in St. John's Episcopal Cemetery in Highgate Falls. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home; on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Gifts in Barbara's memory may be made to, Missisquoi Valley Rescue, P.O. Box 22, Swanton 05488.

JOHN DAVID LIPTAK

SANTA ANA, CA/ST. ALBANS -- John D. Liptak, 48, passed away at his home in Santa Ana. He was born in St. Albans, Vt., Oct. 7, 1953, the son of John J. "Jack" Liptak and the late Susan (Hermann) Liptak.

John is survived by his father and stepmother, John J. and Joy Liptak of Burlington and Maquam Shore in St. Albans; three sisters, Michelle J. Hale of Marlboro, Mass., Gretchen E. Goodmaster of Naugatuck, Conn., and Laura G. Liptak of Braintree, Mass.; an aunt and uncle, Ronald and Beverly Liptak of Grand Rapids, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his mother, Susan, he was predeceased by a brother, Benjamin Liptak in 1992.

A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of John's family. Interment will be in the family lot in Greenwood Cemetery in St. Albans. Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans.

CHRISTY MARIE BOUTIN

FAIRFIELD -- Christy Marie Boutin, age 17, of Fairfield passed away unexpectedly at her home early Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 24, 2001.

She was born in Fairfax on Dec. 7, 1983, the daughter of Mary Boutin. Her love of her family was abundant and the light of her life was her daughter, Samantha. After giving birth to her beautiful daughter she still wished to graduate from high school and was enrolled in courses to graduate in June of 2002.

She loved to draw and enjoyed her music and two cats Smokey and Precious and her dog, Shadow. Christy looked forward to warm days and sunshine with open arms, always offering her loving hugs to friends and family unconditionally. She had a warm loving and gentle smile that when combined with her laughter became contagious and always made others laugh without hesitation. She will be well remembered for her warm and loving personality and will be deeply missed by all those fortunate enough to have known and loved her.

She is survived by her loving mother, Mary (Boutin) Combs, and step-father, Orval Combs, of Fairfield; her beautiful daughter, Samantha Jasmine Devlin of Fairfield; a special person in her life and father of their daughter, Grant Devlin of Fairfield; her maternal grandmother, Isabel Boutin, widow of the late Donald Boutin of Fairfield; four step-brothers, Larry, Gary, Norman, and Robert Hogaboom; many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Visiting hours will be held at the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Luke's Church, Fairfax, on Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at 10 a.m. with Rev. Francis E. Connors officiating. Interment in the family lot in St. Luke's Cemetery will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made in Christy's memory to a trust fund established for her daughter Samantha c/o Isabel Boutin P.O. Box 11, Fairfax, Vt., 05454. Arrangements are by the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home, 1176 Main St., Fairfax.

JOHN RALPH WOOD

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - John Ralph Wood, 76, died Wednesday at the Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, Va. after a long illness.

Mr. Wood's wife, Regina (Bovat) Wood survives him. She was born and grew up in Bakersfield, Vt.

Mr. Wood was born July 12, 1925 in Hanover, N.H., the son of Ralph Merton and Regis (Daley) Wood of Hartland, Vt. He attended schools in Hartland and Hartford, then entered the U.S. Air Force and served from 1943 to 1946.

Upon his discharge from the service, he was employed with a company that built the Union Village Dam at Union Village, Vt. He then worked for 10 years with the B&M Railroad in White River Jct., Vt., and then for three years for Douglas Aircraft in Mojave, Calif. before going to work for 28 years with the U.S. Postal Service at White River Jct.

After retiring from the Postal Service, he then fulfilled his lifelong dream and began his own construction and excavating business called Jude Construction which he operated from 1986 to 1994.

John was an avid hunter, including several moose hunting trips made to Newfoundland. He was a lifelong member of the NRA and member of the Rod and Gun Club, both in Lancaster, Calif. and White River Jct., Vt., from which he received several shooter's marksman trophies.

John is survived by his wife of 51 years, Regina (Bovat) Wood; eight sons, Michael J. Wood of White River Jct.; Matthew P. Wood of Bradford, Vt., Marc J. Wood of Sharon, Vt.; Mitchell G. Wood of Fredericksburg, Va., Marshal P. Wood of Bernardston, Mass., Martin F. Wood of Raleigh, N.C., Miles X. Wood of Ludlow, Vt., and Montgomery P. Wood of White River Jct.; four daughters, Maureen E. Marcs, of Spotsylvania, Va., Michelle R. Hudson of White River, Jct., Monica G. White of York, Me., and Maria R. Rodriguez of Hopkinsville, Ky.; 31 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; seven brothers, Richard A. Wood of West Lebanon, N.H., Paul N. Wood of Quechee, Vt., Raymond F. Wood of Crescent City, Calif., Peter Wood of Plainville, Conn., Mark J. Wood of Barre, Vt., Jerome T. Wood of Lebanon, N.H., Thomas M. Wood of Stratham, N.H.; and a sister, Regina E. (Wood) Gaudreau of Ludlow, Me., as well as many nieces and nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Albert John and his sister Rita M. (Wood) Kralejevich.

Friends may call at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct., Vt. Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. with a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Anthony's Church, White River Jct. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Vermont Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center, Vt.

JOY A. MEDOR

ALBURG/S. BURLINGTON -- Joy A. Medor, 69, a lifelong residence of Alburg and recently a residence of South Burlington, passed away early Wednesday morning, Oct. 24, 2001, in the Holiday House nursing facility in St. Albans.

Joy was born in Alburg, April 18, 1932, the daughter of the late Irving John and Anna (Bourgeois) Mitchell. She graduated from Alburg High School and worked for P.J. Medor family for several years.

On Jan. 7, 1961, she married P. J. Medor who predeceased her on Dec. 28, 1997. Joy was associated with both S. J. Campbell and P.J. Medor for over 50 years and was owner/operator of P. J. Medor, Inc. prior to her retirement in 1999. She was a member and very devoted parishioner of St. Amadeus Church in Alburg. Joy was very active in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Elks Club in Plattsburgh, N.Y. and was also past president of the Alburg Public Library in Alburg.

Joy is survived by two step-children, Douglas and his wife Gail Medor of West Swanton, and Anne Marie Bechard of Avon Lake, Ohio; a brother, Vincent Mitchell and his companion Jessie Boutah of Alburg; two sisters Barbara and her husband Robert Bechard of Champlain, N.Y., Delores and her husband Gordon Blair of Alburg; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Joy also leaves a long time co-worker and very special friend Lorna and Erwin Arnold of Alburg.

A very special thank you to the doctors and nursing staff at Northwestern Medical Center, Holiday House nursing facility in St. Albans and the Pillsbury Manor in South Burlington for the wonderful care she received during the past few months.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, at 10 a.m. at St. Amadeus Church in Alburg. The pastor, Father Maurice U. Boucher, SSE, will be the principal celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in the family lot in St. Amadeus Cemetery in Alburg. Family and friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton, from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26, 2001. Gifts in Joy's memory may be made to the Alburg Fire and Rescue in care of Terry Tatro, Alburg, Vt. 05440.
