PETER F. HARTT
Morrisville
3/11/2009

Peter Frederick Hartt, 51, of Stowe, died unexpectedly Monday, March 2, 2009, at Copley Hospital in Morrisville.

He was born July 16, 1957, in Montreal, Quebec, to Ann Josephine (Almquist) Hartt and Robert M. Hartt. The family moved to Vermont in 1966, and Peter lived in the Stowe area for his entire life. His beloved mother, Ann, died March 24, 2008.

Peter graduated from Stowe High School and later earned a business degree from Johnson State College. He was currently pursuing a teaching certificate at Johnson State.

A longtime Vermont journalist, Peter most recently served as sports editor for the Barre-Montpelier Times Argus, where he wrote a popular auto-racing column about Thunder Road, and attended hundreds and hundreds of high school sporting events. His knowledge of the Central Vermont sports scene was so extensive that while he took notes, he could easily impress his colleagues by banging out his stories from memory, quotes and all.

He earlier worked at the Times Argus in the 1980s, covering sports as an editor and reporter before returning to his hometown paper, The Stowe Reporter, in the town that he loved. Peter was well suited to the role of editor and reporter in Stowe, where he was well known and beloved by generations of residents. He had begun his journalistic career at The Reporter while a teenager.

Peter also covered news and sports for WDEV-AM radio, in addition to working as a sports announcer. He also helped out in his father's Greensboro-based Davis Hill Weather Stick business, and recently tutored students at the Mt. Mansfield Winter Academy in Stowe.

At one time, Peter served on the Stowe Recreation Commission, and he was elected justice of the peace in Stowe. He took great delight in preparing for and performing weddings and civil unions for friends, family and complete strangers. As a longtime substitute teacher, volunteer coach, and chaperone on a dozen or so school trips to Greece, Peter touched the lives of innumerable teenagers at Stowe High. He touched us all with his wit, insight, goodness and generosity.

Survivors include his longtime partner, Virginia Holiman, of Highgate Center, and her son, Wiley; his father, Robert M. Hartt, of Greensboro; two brothers: Whitaker, of Elmore, his wife, Cheryl, and their son, Brent Miller; and Tim, of East Hardwick, his wife, Deborah, and their children, Jessica, Keaven, Seamus, Walker, Robyn and Sam. He also leaves an aunt, Mary Smith, of Cobourg, Ontario; aunt, Karen Bowen of Gilsum, N.H.; an uncle, David Almquist, of Cobb, Calif.; two special cousins, Martha and Fred Smith; several other cousins; and countless friends and colleagues.

A memorial service was held at Stowe Community Church in Stowe on Saturday, March 7, at 2 p.m.

Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury is assisting with the arrangements. To send on-line condolences, please visit www.perkinsparker.com.

The family requests that flowers be omitted; rather, memorial gifts would be appreciated in Peter Hartt’s memory to the Peter F. Hartt Scholarship Fund for Stowe High School students interested in history or English. Send donations to Stowe High School, 413 Barrows Road,
Stowe Vt. 05672-4740.
